Not a flame thread... I promise.
I've never had an iPhone, but I have a few friends that do. Every time I ask them if their phone can do this or that, it seems that it can. Has the gap closed significantly? Is there anything an Android phone can do that an iPhone can't? Or vice versa?
For the record, I'm not a ringleader of the holy war against iPhones. I mean, I think they are pretty decent phones. Of course, I do like the Android phones.. a lot. But I don't see myself switching to an iPhone any time soon.
So, keep the flames down and just list the facts.
The only two differences that I really know of is 1) Android is on all of the US carriers, where iPhone is AT&T only; and 2) it is much easier and friendlier in the rooting of the device for Android phones (that is, carriers and manufacturers don't care).
You only touched the tip of the iceberg with the "rooting" part. Take a look in the Dev section of the forum and you'll see why Android totally owns iOS. This is the main reason I chose Android. If this was an iPhone forum that whole sub-forum wouldn't exist. The only thing iOS has is apps.
Plus (until recently) iPhones were stuck with crappy screen resolution: 320x480 while many Android phones had screens at 480x800. The Android OS isn't restricted to just one piece of hardware so we get many manufacturers competing against each other. When companies compete the consumer wins. The only thing iPhone competes against is the previous iPhone model. If Apple releases a new iPhone it only needs to be marginally better than the previous model for people to buy it.
I used to be an Apple fan-boy. I had an iPod, bought the 17" MacBook Pro when it was released, had an iPhone, all that stuff. And while I still respect Apple for pushing cutting-edge technology, there is no way a single company can release cutting-edge products as fast as multiple other companies combined.
Not to mention that Android is capable of using widgets. As well as a more "open" market for applications compared to Apple's review process before a application gets published. However, it is up to the user's responsibilities to take a look at what permissions the app is asking for. But if you're tech savvy enough, this shouldn't be a problem and there aren't many applications that are malicious.
The most significant difference is that Android has A LOT more customzation compared to iOS. The iOS is so limited on customization where Android we can change just about everything: the virtual keyboard, home screen, app drawer, and just pretty much everything.
to be honest with you, you can't go wrong with either phone. i have to say, iphone4 is a great piece of hardware and apple, like Samsung knows a lil something about design. good luck.
no comments in other things but when i hold my dads iphone 3gs, it feels like too small... and fat.. I mean, the display looks small compared to my vibrant
well in terms of customization, i know a jail broken iphone or ("rooted android") phone can also get the customizations that aren't available out of the box. So in that regard, I would have to say both are just as customizable.

Sure, with the exception of the lack of widgets on the iPhone, as well as Live Wallpapers.
The Android desktop is like the desktop on your PC
The Apple iOS 'desktop' is like your start menu

iOS Customization is no where close to as diverse to Android. iOS you can jailbreak it, however the UI still stays generally the same. For android, your able to create completely new interfaces (ie: different launchers/home screens) iOS you can sorta do something similar with designing templates w/ blank icons and such but it still isn't the same and is a rather stupid way of going about it. Android has the ability to customize down to the system level, which is why i see it as a superior OS.

Which device are you talking about?
Apple's main appeal to consumers is sleekness. The iPhone is a sleek looking piece of hardware that bedazzles the average person (i.e. retard). When I go around a college campus and see every person with a 13 inch Mac Book that was $1500+ I have to laugh. If it was not for the sleek presentation and general "coolness" of the brand they would not be able to get away with half the crap they pull.

This is America, exaggeration is perfectly legal!
well when talking about the two, you have to understand the iPhone is a piece of hardware and software and Android is software...
the iPhone and the Vibrant are generally the same in terms of hardware... however the Vibrant has some huge advantages in having an expandable memory and replaceable battery.
iOS is much more limited than Android in terms of customization, but also has an advantage as it works perfectly with the hardware.
in my opinion, the iPhone is a much more user friendly device whereas Android devices are more exciting and feature filled.

I think this sums it up perfectly. The other thing is that if you don't plan on utilizing the potential of Android the difference between the two is even smaller and comes down to stock features (like- do you want a FFC or removeable storage? Tmobile or ATT?). If you plan on rooting Android will far and away kill the iphone in terms of customization and extra features.
I love my macbook but there is no way I'd get an iphone with a sweet phone like the Vibrant running Android as my other choice.

cell phone companies don't care about freaks.
This is so much more interesting than I thought it would. before I posted this, I thought the answers would be "Android has such-and-such app" where iPhone could never do this (or vice versa) and here's why.
Rooting and tinkering are what I love to do, and when I bought my G1 on day one, I honestly did not realize that rooting would even be an option. I just somehow knew that Android was going to be the way to go. I kinda lucked out on the fact that we can root our phones. Without root, then these are good phones. Add root, and you have an awesome phone.
You know how sometimes you look at a really interesting photograph and you know it is interesting, but you don't know why it is interesting? And then you take a class in photography and you learn why that photograph was interesting--composition, lighting, etc? Well, now I know why I love my phone.
Bottom line is, I guess people who just want a phone to work, and not have to do anything, or deal with small, annoying "issues", then the iPhone may be a better way to go. But you have to realize that iPhone will never be the best HW/SW out there any more. I think Android will always have the edge now, due to all the competition. So if you are an above average user, or an advanced user, then the choice is easy: Android.
Android definitely does more, you just have to go out of your way to figure it all out (which is why we are all here). IPhone makes doing cool stuff more easily accessible (which works for the masses that just want a sweet phone that does sweet stuff outta the box), but the level of customization is nowhere near android. I've told my diehard iPhone friends if they were to just use an android phone for a month, they would switch. The only credit I give to the iPhone is the sick lineup of games. Android pretty much blows in that department.

It'll start to catch up, Gameloft games are available on Android but the way that they deliver their games are terrible especially for people who root their phones and things of that sort. I just wish they would offer their games on the market.
But to an extent, you're totally right.. I hope that game developers will move on the Android platform and take advantage of the hardware that is always improving and improving on Android whereas Apple releases new hardware for their phone once per year.

Let's be rational. There's probably 10 to 20 times as many iPhone owners as there are X10 owners, which comes with it a proportional increase in people developing for it.
You'd have a better point if it said "Apple released Android 2.2 before Sony Ericsson did for the X10."
Did anyone watch the Engadget Show from October?
They made fun of the X10 again ".....for example Sony's phone, that came with, what.... 1.6?"

nope, haven't seen anything like that...mmmhhh, but really, i love my X10 now that it's running 2.1, and i loved my X10 when it was running 1.6....it has this unique design which makes it actually look it a little more mature and sophisticated compared to the iPhone (no offence here, I had used an iPhone before I gave it to my girlfriend and bought an X10).....
besides, I think the fact that people are being eager to get froyo fully running on an iPhone somehow shows that they may not be completely satisfied with Apple's OS ;-)

You've been able to install android off cydia for some time now. I know I did it on my iphone a few months back now. It is unusable though. There just aren't enough buttons on the iphone for it to work properly.

thats different, if se releases a new phone i wont care, i bought my phone online from at&t for 160 bucks and had it delivered to me, but when people freak out about the new iphone, wait in line for days, pay up to 400 bucks (credit cards only now, no more cash or debit will be excepted for newly released iphones), and then find out within a few months a newer better one is already being viewed by the fcc... well it gets a little frustrating

You may have overlooked this, but as I said, I had been using an iPhone (for two years) before I got an X10...hence, I totally agree with you...all that jailbreaking here, jailbreaking there, and thus only being able to fully "unleash the phone's power" (yeah, a little bit of sarcasm in there) if you jailbreak it, is just pure crap....always being scared of the next update which will probably make it more difficult or even impossible to jailbreak the handset is so freaking annoying - thus, android ROCKS! (no offence to people who use an iPhone btw, just to clarify) ;D
My wife's iPad is realy lucky because I would break it from the first days if it was mine. I love the machine I hate the OS.
If there is an option to install Android on it I would definetely give it a try.
Iphone froyo
I will never buy an iPhone no matter what os it is running.

SGSII but since it's not out yet, Cappy all the way.

Also.. the iPhone 4 screen shatters with barely a strong glance at the GLASS screen.
Don't mention the word Apple or iPhone on xda. The mentally challenged will come out and bite rabidly. A better place would be HowardForums.
I would sell the iPhone 4 if you are comfortable with an x10. A sealed box will sell for a good price. Then you can wait for the SGS2. The iPhone 5 probably won't be announced until June, which is quite a while. I wouldn't buy anything right now though, since the stuff on the market right now isn't really an upgrade from what you already have.

Most of the stuff you will get here is android fans, but in reality apple has much better hardware than anything on android (my opinion). The OS, well they are pretty similar, if you want your phone to just work apple all the way, if you want to customized then go android.
Just be aware that iPhone can also be customized by jailbreaking.
I have a 3GS that's almost 2 years old and it's working as good as day one.

Reality and personal opinion don't mix sadly. Anyway, depends what you mean by "hardware". Apple A4 was Samsung's Hummingbird, just with a lower clock and a slower GPU. Overall build quality may be better... until it falls and you're left with cracked glass all over the phone. Antennagate? Not sure about the much better now...
Software and integration is another story, that's where iOS definitely wins.

It's all relative to needs.
Sure, the iP is a pretty piece of hardware backed up but the brand fandom. everyone has it, everyone wants one.
As far as jailbreaking goes, the cat and mouse update/jailbreak game with apple gets old really fast... Every update of iOS patches something that dev team fixes and then they fix it and apple releases another update and .... you get the idea.
Jailbreaking every two months, playing with the unlocked baseband and risking ending up with a brick is no fun.
Personally I've decided to move away from every apple product, because apple doesn't necessarily have the greatest most advanced hardware, what they do have is massive marketing department with lots of talented people to make people want those devices (just look at apple product placement in the media).
In the end, it's a matter of usability, preference and what works for the individual; at this point in time, the iP4 is clearly outdated compared (hardware wise) to the devices coming out right now or in the coming month (Atrix, SGS2, etc...) and they will have had 6-7 months to prepare and get the iP5 design ready and produced by June-July-Sept with better hardware based on what they saw coming out from the competition at the CES and other events. By the time apple is done promoting their revolutionary iP5, Motorola, HTC and Samsuncg will have come up with somthing better based on the iP5 specs...
The cel phone war will never end, it will be the eternal peeing contest between large companies. As far as the consumer is concerned, we're just trapped in a vicious cycle we have created.
For me what weighs in, is the ability to have full control of my device. Therefore iP is a no go and thus a lesser device in my perception. Atrix was on top of the list until the Moto fiasco with the signed bootloader. The remaining option is the SGS2 depending on how easy it will be to update without relying on Samsung to do so.
On a side note, I've been using a iP3G since it came out and haven't upgraded the device, so I've been with it for almost 4 years; and seeing all these new android devices coming out everyday makes me hate it more day by day.
Android, for me, offers many more possibilities of growth than iOS will ever be able give me. I am not limited by a company as far as what I can do with the hardware that I hold in my hands.
I would rather take an operating system that is designed to let me do anything to it per my own needs and requirements than one that is marketed to the masses for mass consumption. There is nothing wrong with either, it is all preference. Apps fail to interest me as I have a busy and fun enough life to not care about too many of them In fact many people around me have pages of apps which i rarely see being launched except for the odd score checking/email app.
There is no point in comparison of the phone. In fact I would like it if Android makes its own features and chooses its direction instead of following iOS.
Well I would say to just use for a little while and see if you like it. If you do, great. If you don't, sell it.
Either way you could sell one now or keep both and sell both layer then the SG2 comes out.

Actually no they aren't. They are so much alike that fighting over them is stupid and pointless.
Both companies can be accused of copying one another when it comes to features.
Its all a matter of personal preference, I prefer Android while others prefer ios, or blackberry or symbian etc. The only reason I dislike apple is not because of their products, but rather their terrible business ethics, otherwise i will admit that the iphone while not my flavour is a good device.

Not when it comes to business practices. Apple has hardware and software that is constantly CAPABLE of doing more, and a simple jailbreak makes it fully capable of almost everything android does. They would rather just sell you features slowly over time.
Whatever iphone 5 can do, iphone 3g probably could have done perfectly well, only now they dont have to truly TRY to make something awesome for people to buy it like android based phones do.
So yea, the devices ARE different.. try to bluetooth a file to someone on an iphone, or really even save a file, or so many other simple things. It COULD be very similar devices except apple is all about slowly selling you functionality and calling it innovation.
The OP has a point, Froyo, as much as we ***** about it, is capable of TONS more than the newest iphone. The only thing apple REALLY has is a following which attracts developers and great hardware that isn't fully utilized.
I just hate iphone fans and apple thats all the products are not.bad at all i still prefer android over ios but if they give me a free iphone i wouldnt complaint, i do agree with the op. Now whos exited about samsung galaxy notes??? I am!!!!!

I love the look of honeycomb, but it still has issues like choppines, not smooth, the stock browser is not good, lack of optimized apps... It doesn't even have an optimized Facebook app but there are third party Facebook apps anyway.. You can't even write a review on the market place and Google seems to be not planning on updating it til the next android version.. Pffffft
I have the gslate and i love it, but it doesn't run like how i want it to be being a dual core... Wish we have an OC kernel for it..
On android, it must have good hardware for it to run sleek.. My brother and his wife both have the touchpad, the browser on that one is fantastic! Why Can't android be like that? Oh yah it must be the widgets hence the choppines.. But it's fine i still prefer android no matter what..
Oh i just thought that if the touchpad was a hit, i bet apple would sue hp because it looks more similar to the ipad than the Galaxy tab does... Samsung is doing well in the mobile industry, making great mobile products, overall innovating... ,apple can't stand it
I think I'm going to switch from Android to iOS with the upcoming iPhone 5.
I just want a phone that works, and works all the time. Aside from antenna-gate, iPhone seems to be a solid and stable device.
I'm tired of messing with my phone. No Android device I have owned has been problem free, but it seems like many iPhones just work and work flawlessly.
Anyways, still undecided until the iPhone is actually released next month.
Yup, iphone is very stable.
Good thing I don't get tired of android though I do get tired of flashing roms that's why I'm using he most stable rom for me.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You guys think that's cool. MIUI blows them all out of the water due to one fact: THEME CHANGER>>>>its sooooo cool! Like having a new rom in 2 seconds. I have been using a cheezit theme forever but I have a hundred different ones downloaded like transformers etc. Its the coolest **** ever. I could care less about anything else. It changes EVERYTHING VISUAL on your phone.
The thing that makes android win over iPhone, the one fact I've never heard a good argument for.. android will let you customize everything. Literally. Ios, though it works consistently, doesn't let you have control of most things. Its based on their business model, and some users don't want to have to be responsible for their devices.. but android wins simply because if the hardware can do something, and as a user, or as a community, you want it bad enough.. you can make it do it.
I wouldn't be as against apple as I am if they didn't fight jailbreaking like they do. Development is hindered by constantly having to find new exploits. Their devices CAN be amazing, but then they'd have to work harder to amaze you if they allowed the hardware to do everything it can do right now.

Reason I've title it "Froyo vs iOS5" because most of the new features in iOS5 are in Froyo already. Gingerbread has more features that iOS5 can't be comparable.
iOS is very stable just can't customize it to my liking, that's why I like/use Android.

im trying to convince my freind who is in the Apple Matrix to see the truth
Siri is a con. Siri are for fanboys who love their phones so much that they have no friends. I picture Siri causing mental illness

If he's a true Apple Fanboy you'll never convince him. They're blinded by the Apple marketing machine which tells them what to buy and when to buy it. As long as you realise iOS is a pOS that's all that matters!

Haha very true! Recently one of my colleague bought TWO iPhone 4Ss (one for him and another for his wife!). He was boosting like he has got a gold mine before I told him about GS2. He started telling that some Chinese phones even have TV tuners
I couldn't stop laughing at his ignorance that he was comparing SGS phones to Chinese replicas! Realized that he is just a small kid who never BOTHERED exploring the market to understand what he is going for. Thats what I call true iPhonetic!
I used to be an Apple fan, then I took an arrow to the knee.
Seriously tho, it won't be long till alot of them realize Android is the real king.
Thinking on tbh I'm glad people are Apple fan boys who are blinded by the fruit because we as a community of Androidians would never be the same. Aka - We dont want dipshits on our hype.

Have you been around here lately? We already have dipshits all over the place. We need the dip**** terminator. Where is Arnold when you need him?
For all you Android fanboys - stop trying to prove a point. Android is good for people who want control over their device and aren't afraid to tinker with stuff. iOS is good for people who don't care, and just want their phone to work straight out of the box.
Android is getting more intuitive with ICS, but its still not as intuitive for new users as iOS. Deal with it. I absolutely love my SGS2 and Android, but I'm not about to fool myself (or anyone else) that Android is right for everyone.
What he said ^^^
I still have a 3gs which my sis gave me. I still play with games and use it as an ipod, also it can be used as an emergency fone ( you dont say!). Iphones are more fitted to people who just want a phone that works, games, entertainment. Android phones are for people who isn't afraid to muck around with their ****s. iOS and Android are both equally good and fitted for different purpose.

Chill dude If your friend is an Apple sheep to an incurable level, I would just give up on it and let him get the iPhone 4S, then show all the cool ****s that we get from XDA to him

+1. Best comment on here. Stock galaxy s2 has nothing on a stock(not jail broken) ip4s. But im into tinkering thats why the iphone isnt for me.
looks like an iphone but powered by android baby!!!!
Iphone is the best smartphone in the world. Even the first iphone is much faster and smoother than the cheap plasticky SGSII. Glass is much more stronger even than titanium, and much costlier, that's why other manufacturers don't afford to use it.
Previous iphone had the 4G's, the Wi-Fis and sh!t and was cool, any fool can realize that the new iphone has 4Ses and not just 2 as the Galaxy, hence is twice as faster!
Android not good, it's only for rocket scientists.
Just to call someone you need to read "Android for Dummies, 3rd Edition" - chapter 10 "How can I make a phone call" and then read FAQ section: "How do I end a phone call".
Installing an app is covered in Chapter 45, Section 18 - screen by screen instructions with drawings.
iPhones are more of a status symbol than anything else. Apple give you a phone with pretty basic features and you will love it because it has a little badge on it. Samsung give you a phone with the capabilities of a mid-range PC. I'm not for or against both, I own a PC and a Mac, an S2 and an iPad. It's personal preference at the end of the day.
If anyone knows of a Winterboard equivalent for Android please let me know!
i know this has been posted before, but it pretty much sums it up...

Never seen that before, i'm pissing myself with laughter here!
who the hell uses siri anyways i have about 6 friends that have iphones but don't use siri that much or at all.
As much as your Market is improving, I still think that is has a long way to go before it can reach the likes of the app store in term of quality! In term of quantity it's there but the apps on IOS are so much F***ING BETTER!!!
It puzzles me why when ever somebody starts a discussion like this a bunch of apple fanboys show up? Are you patrolling the internet looking for somebody who might insult your beloved icon?
Besides, what are you doing at xda in the first place. This is a forum for modders apple does not want you to do such things...
