I've noticed low in call volume and I was wondering if anyone had a fix or if newer firmware fixes the problem. I'm currently running JH2 which came with the phone. Even at max setting (88) I can barely hear some people.
I noticed the same thing. I have run a bunch of different firmware and still had the same problem, although I don't remember if the various 2.2 fws had the same issue. IIRC there is another way to turn it up by using some of the factory codes. I don't remember where I saw the thread on that specific issue though.
There is a list of Samsung Handset codes here though http://samfirmware.webs.com/samsungmobilecode.htm

I read up on the factory code thing as well but the fix is only temporary. I'm wondering why others don't seem to have the same problems...I'm assuming it has to do with software and more primarily with Bell (maybe...?). I hope FroYo fixes it...
Get the samsung service mode app... Go into audio, handset, diamond solution, voice booster. Then hit voice booster and the hit the menu key and select keyed input and put in the value 1. This turns voice booster on. Them select limit level and change the value to 12 our something by hitting left menu key and selecting keyed input, lower value is louder. Then user the left menu key and select end. That will increase the volume. The settings aren't permanent. You'll have to input them each time you reset the phone.
Cheers

Try installing audio manager from market and turn up system volume,... not sure where to find the system volume in phone settings but audio manager is good.

Sorted the problem thanx, still weird how the system volume whent low.

How'd you fix it?
(never mind) ... Why was it low in the first place?
Mine does this toodame happens to lock/unlock sound. I think it routes the sound to the call speaker instead of the rear speaker
Now that you mention it, I have the same. All my volume settings are set to Full and in sound options, I have selected to have sounds fr dial pad and for touch screen and for lock/unlock. I don't think they are redirected to call speaker because I don't hear sound there either.
Anyone found a solution without installing 3rd party app?
Ok, looked deeper into it and discovered that actually the only solution is the audio manager. It seems to be a must have as Android misses critical volume settings on its interface. That application is the only way to allow you to adjust the volume.
That's no excuse for HTC, Google or whoever is responsible for the Android OS or DHD. (really, who is responsible? I never thought that)
Going to give it a try myself as well.
Chefs, is there something that can be done on your end?
I use Sound Manager for this issue...happened to me twice already...
Other applications are responsible for this.
I too had faced this problem and suddenly the tones of dial pad were gone on my htc desire, it was only vibrating. The settings of Sound were all fine, still no tone. So being a tester I am, I backtracked and remembered what all I did.
It turned out when we install applications in Android we give them access to core functionalities of system. I had used Fring application prior in the day, where I had used Fring's Dialer pad. I logged into fring again went to dialer pad, increased volume and indicator said "Volume" unlike any other indicator of volume in HTC Desire. After increasing the volume, I logged out and went to phone dialer again, and tones were back. So our applications are responsible for turning down volume. A centralized application which controls all application can come in handy and there are few in android market available.
Hope this helped
I have deleted some apps from my phone following this problem but seemed to make no difference... today however the volume on dialer has returned to normal??? But also the noises on the qwerty pad now sound like an old fashioned typewriter??? My 4 yr old was messing with phone earlier but checked settings I can think of and nothing has changed... confused!
yea i got the same problem tried emailing HTC they dont know anything about it they just replied with
Kindly go to Menu>settings>sounds>check:
audible touch screen
audible selections
screen lock sounds
:/
thanx for XDA or i would've never sort it out
It worked!
1 - PLUG YOUR EARPHONE
2 - ##634# TAPE CALL
3 - in diagnosis mode tape *#0002*28346#
4 - click GET on Device Gain
5 - in 'device gain' leave number 5, set 1500 (max) and -1100 (low)
6 - click set
7 - MAKE SURE AUDIENCE.CFG IS ON
reboot your phone (turn off, turn on)
When you say reboot your phone do you mean a soft reset (just turning off and then back on). Or are you talking about a hard reset?
Turn off using power button
does work i think1500 is to much.. u get lots of distortion if volume to high
It actually works but it affects only Zune. So if you were looking to increase the volume on Netflix, this will not change it

Hmm weird :S
doesn't work for me. I type ##634# and press call, I then get a diagnostic screen. I then type *#0002*28346# but nothing happens. Is there another step ? I'm using Samsung Focus bought at Rogers (in Canada). It came unlocked as far as I can tell. I popped in my FIDO Sim Card and all is working right. I even get 3G+ data connection. So is there another step or is the code not going to work with this Rogers phone ?
This did not boost volume for me in Slacker Radio at all, and now I can barely hear anything from the phone itself when not using earphones.
Can anyone use this diag code without earphones plugged in and tell me what the setting are under the Device Gain section? Mine now reads 7, 1200, -500, and I can barely hear any of the phone sounds.

You need to read the diagnostic codes thread...after you type##634# in the phone pad. From your home screen (live tiles) swipe over to your programs list. You will see an app that says diagnosis...then you enter *#0002*28346# and follow the instructions from the beginning of this thread.

I tried that. Still doesn't work. I tried other codes and they work but it seems the code for root menu or this one for volume control does not work. After pressing the last # character nothing happens. If anyone else with Rogers Samsung Focus working on FIDO has got these codes to work, please let me know if there was any other steps or different codes.

I have a Rogers Focus on Fido & like you can't get this code to work.
tried but no effect, anyone knows the default value of the 5, i want it to keep as default
This is great

Any chance you might know the code for root menu ?
Hi Folks, I noticed today my GT speaker in call volume gets low. Volume levels are set at max. I check the music, videoplayback and media volume and all is ok. The only problem is calling.
Thinking it was after I used a Samsung WEP450 Bluetooth to make calls. I just don't used it today and noticed this.
Mine is a T-mobile USA GT, running ROTO JMEv4 Firmware. Anyone else with this situation?
Can anyone post the dial code (*#@@@@@@#) to get the service menu that lets you change the default volumes?
I just fixed it. I called my self via the GT and Up the volume at the highest level. Then Down two levels and the In Call Volume from the Speaker get fixed. Woot Woot!
I don't know what could be happening. If I Up it to the highest turn lower. But It's fixed by Now... again, Woot Woot!

speaker in call volume hack = (*#*#197328640#*#*) I'm not sure what values change there. But this is the service menu!
Enter that code into your dialer and the service menu opens. Tap [5]Audio [1]Handset [1] Volume I changed all the volumes to 92.

When you say "all" you mean to row #3 SRC I2S1 RX Volume and #4 DST Speech TX Volume?
If so I do that and doesn't fix the problem. I just maintain using my original fix. I don't know what happened! I had a friend with the same trouble and I give to him mi FIX and he fixed it. Well "fix" in quotes...!!!
But by now I can say Woot Woot!
any reason why 92 is the max and not 100?
I have a Verizon Tab "no phone" How do I get to service mode
Changing the in call volume in the service menu does nothing. Also, if you reboot your changes do not get saved.
Woop Woop!
Just called myself and set the volume to 2 down from highest and it now sounds a lot louder!!
Thank you!
ps This wasn't the case when I had the stock Samsung firmware.. sounded fine then.. It only started when I started all this custom-romming-schtomming.. maybe its a kernel thing? I'm on modaco at the moment.

You are correct - 100 is the max. I never go max on volume (crackles, distortion, etc.).
There are several volume adjustments, just look around in all the menus. Reboot when you are done experimenting.

I must be getting a placebo. Or standing too close to a few explosions did damage.
Go Audio > Speaker > diamond solution and there is also a setting there for Voice Booster.

I have noticed that when I get an incoming call the ringing volume starts off low and then after the 1st or 2nd ring it jumps up to full volume (or the volume I have set it to). It's like as if the ringing volume has been set to ascending.
I have tried it with different ringtones but it's always the same result.
It is a little annoying and I'm not sure if its a bug or not as I can't seem to find anything in the settings to adjust this.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, were you able to correct or change it?
Thanks.
I do not have this problem.
But i use one of the preinstalled ringtones.
Maybe it has something to do with it.
But i looked in the settings and did not find any options regarding the increasing volume (know that option from my old w850i sony ericsson)
I have tried it with the preinstalled ringtones as well but I still get the same problem.
Yeah my old nokia's used to have an option for ascending ringtone but I can't find anything like that. Might have to do a factory reset and see if that fixes anything.
You know what?
I've got the same problem.
had a ringtone that got kinds louder in the first 2 seconds so i did not hear that the volume was increasing.(had pegasus)
But with another ringtone i can hear that increasing volume too.
weird :S

Have any of you lot downloaded additional ringtones from 3rd party apps like zedge?
I'm wondering they could've caused it, cos it definitely seems like a software issue as oppose to a hardware issue.
I'm going to do a factory reset on my phone and wipe it completely and see what happens.
I posted this a while back, but the Mods kept moving it to Q&A. We need the phone.apk modified so the increasing ringer effect is removed. This is stock behavior with all Samsung phones, including the SGS.

So are you saying that this is normal behaviour? and that everyone's SGS2 will have this issue?
I just did a full wipe and factory reset and it didn't resolve anything
My S2 act the same, i've uploaded the song from kies.
It's a bit annoying.
Okay I think that cmd512 was right, it seems to be a feature of samsung phones, one which apparently we can't change without rooting the device. Looks like I wiped my phone for no reason, great!!

Can other users just confirm if their device acts in the same way or not? Thanks.
I noticed this my 1st call or so (3 weeks ago). I assume this is done by Samsung purposely to give users a chance to silence the ringer before it disturbs something/someone (meeting, conference, library, etc.)
If you check motion in Settings, you will see that there is an option to articles silence sounds by turning the phone over. I assume the ringer starts low, then increases to allow the users time to silence the phone before reaching max volume.

Yeah I thought it might be something like that too but you'd think samsung would at least put an option in the settings to let the user choose if they wanted it or not ... or even put a note about it somewhere so people like me wouldn't think its a problem with their phone and format their device for no reason lol
This is absolutely normal, was the same on the SGS. The only way is to decompile phone.apk and change one of the settings. If you search "non-increasing ringer phone.apk" for the SGS, you will see tons of posts with this file. Once you push the new phone.apk over, it will get rid of the increasing ringer effect.
Unfortunately, when I tried to decompile phone.apk, I got errors. If I can get a deodexed version of phone.apk from KE7, I can modify it accordingly.
'Feature'
Confirmed - It is standard stock behavior and I hate it.. lol.
Coming from the captivate where I ran i900 modded roms they would have ascending ringers until some dev modded it to not..

Made a transition from N1 to GS2 and not sure I actually liked the phone. 4 days now and trying very hard to keep it. The dev forum is huge here with 2 different sections and struggling with some of the tweaks and mods.
1)the volume on phone earpiece during call is very low. Even jacking vol all the way upto 100%, I sometimes struggle to hear other person properly. Also to add is the voice of call sounds very "distant". Anyone experiencing this?
2) is there an option to turn off "auto rotate" for dialer?
3) any settings for selection of notification widget?
4) how to change lockscreen to default android one?
much appreciated replies. Cheers.

Yes, I miss stickied dev list of updates of all the ROMs that can be seen in other device forums. Guess it will eventually pick up when the device matures.
2) 3) No, you will have to switch to a custom ROM as far as I know
4) You might have luck with the WidgetLocker lockscreen app.
