Hello,
I have Froyo 2.2 installed with S-off. I used unrevoked and unrevoked forever to get to this point. Here's my question:
I just downloaded Rom manager for the first time, and it is giving me a message that I need to install Clockwork Recovery before using the program. But of course, I already have CWR installed from using unrevoked. I'm confused about the various responses in this forum as well as others. Some say you can reinstall CWR on top of the existing one just fine; others say if you install on top of an S-off version, there will be problems.
Which is true and how can I start using ROM manager?

You either need to manually edit the ROM Manager .settings file to get it to realize that you already have CWM recovery, or you have to let it download it for you. Doing so doesn't cause any problems (anyone who reported that it does is wrong).

Well I used the unrEVOked RC I got in there irc today on my friends Incredible, about 2 hours ago actually. I found out the it now does the unrEVOked root and unrEVOked forever (S-off) all in one. After I did that I made him buy ROM Manager. When you open it at the very top there is a button that says something along the line of Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. I clicked on that button, it asked if I was on the Incredible CDMA. I clicked yes and it automatically downloaded it for me. I was able to use ROM Manager to put CM6 on his Incredible with no problems.

Ive been trying for about a week to get CM6 on my incredible. And i see some of the people on this forum have it. Ive contacted developers and users alike but for some reason I'm having trouble. After Root, I downloaded and installed Rom Manager but I'm unsure what to do next. I tried to flash Clockworkmod with the app, but when I boot up into recovery, I dont see The Clockwork menu, or the Nandroid backup option. I dont want to Flash the rom without being able to make a backup or install custom Update.zip files. Does anyone have any suggestions???PLEASE PM me for any suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!
If you aren't seeing the clockwork recovery, then you didn't run the reflash tool after you rooted. Run the reflash tool and it will load the custom recovery correctly.
what reflash tool?
unrEVOked 3, should be a link to it in this forum
I tried to run that but it keeps getting stuck. I might have to manually move files.

Chances are if the unrEVOked tool isn't working, you may not have the right drivers installed. Check their wiki to make sure you do. Also, to get the nightly CM6 builds (when they resume, which will likely be shortly) you do have to buy the ROM manager premium license from the Market (which I recommend you do anyways as it goes to Koush who is the one responsible for developing CM6 for the DInc).
Here's the link to the wiki concerning the driver:

Wow is this all I really nerd to do ? I already bought Rom manager, but clockwork isn't working. I guys updating the drivers will let me get clock work ? Do u run a custom Rom? Thanks!!!
This is a guide on how to root your phone and install a custom ROM using Universal AndRoot. It supports several phone models and is the simplest way to root a phone I have ever seen. It features a 1 click root and a 1 click unroot option. Rooting with this method does NOT affect your bootloader, therefore if your phone needs serviced you can (theoretically, I have not verified this to be true) simply unroot and restore to normal.
As always myself, XDA, ROM developers, your friends, your mom, the rulers of the world and the developers of this app are NOT responsible for any bricks YOU create by taking the risk of rooting your phone. Also there are no guarantees that your warranty will not be null and void. If you NEED your warranty, DO NOT root your phone. Use at your own risk!

First we will gather the items needed to complete this process.
Universal AndRoot Version 1.6.1 is the newest STABLE release. The newest version is 1.6.2 beta 5, which is where the updated list above comes from and is said to be very close to the final release version.
Next go to the Android Market and install AppInstaller (there are a few versions including appsInstaller by modmymobile, all are free)
While in the market, also grab ROM Manager (also free)
Next download the ROM you would like to use. I personally recommend CyanogenMod 6.0.0 DS - stable. This link will take you to the Cyanogen downloads section where you will have to select your phone and search for the ROM you want.
While you are there, also grab the Google Addon pack for your phone.
Of course it is up to you to choose a ROM you like. You can also keep your stock ROM if you choose.
Lets Begin!
Install the Universal AndRoot .apk file, the ROM you chose and the Google Addon to the root of your microSD card
Open AppInstaller and let it locate your AndRoot .apk on your microSD. Select it and install it to your phone.
Open Universal AndRoot from you app menu. It should read your phone and show your firmware version. Click the "Root" button and let it do it's thing. It really only takes a minute or 2. When finished it will let you know. Congratulations, at this point you are now rooted.
Now for a custom ROM!
Open ROM Manager. Install Recovery. The default recovery for ROM Manager is ClockworkMod Recovery (which is what I am using) but a lot of people seem to like RA Recovery. This option is at the bottom of ROM Manager under "Flash Alternate Recovery". Whichever you choose, let the Recovery flash.
Next choose "Backup Current ROM", then "Reboot Into Recovery" (for future reference, you can also get into recovery mode by turning your phone off, then hold down the "home" button hit the power button. continue hold home as it powers on.)
Chose "wipe data/factory reset" then "wipe cache partition". This step is important. I know from personal experience if you don't do this you may end up in a bootscreen loop!
Choose "install zip from sdcard". Navigate to the ROM you loaded on your microSD and flash it.
After the phone reboots (which can take a few minutes the first time after flashing a new firmware version) go back to ROM Manager and again choose "Reboot Into Recovery". Once in recovery, again choose "install zip from sdcard". Navigate to the Google Addon pack on your microSD and install it.
Once you are rooted and running your new ROM, go into ROM Manager and partition your sd card. This is optional.
That is it. You should be good to go! Way easier and faster than the old goldcard method!
This is my first XDA guide. I hope it is up to your standards!

when you try the root process or when you try to flash a rom?
i get the exclamation point screen when i try to boot into recovery mode the nandroid wiki mentions this screen and says to hit alt + L but i cant find which of the mytouch3g buttons they are talking about hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Howto:_Nandroid_Backup
any help is appreciated
being that the nandroid wiki page is talking about multiple phone models, i assume it is referring to those with a physical keyboard. i honestly don't have a clue what to do in that situation. never ran into it myself. hopefully someone here will have an answer for you.
The exclamation point means that the recovery didn't flash properly so your booting into the stock recovery. The step in CM wiki is probably for the G1 which has a physical keyboard. Try booting your phone normally and flashing the recovery again.
Notes about this guide: You will not be able to flash a new splash screen with this method. I would recommend not using the Clockwork recovery that's included with ROM manager. You need to also wipe Dalvik-cache before flashing your new ROM. Most newer recoveries will let you flash multiple zips at a time, so if your installing CM there's no need to reboot in between flashing the ROM and the Google adding.

@ ziggity and amon ra
Hi, pretty new here and this post was great. Thank you. I have finally rooted my 1.2 and was so easy thanks to this post. I also though, got exclamation point. I think it has to do with the part in the directions when it comes to flashing the recovery. Here is what worked for me, maybe helpful to someone else.....
-If you want, or are trying to flash, the Amon Ra recovery instead of using ROM Manager"s default (ClockworkMod), go ahead and put the recovery file on the root of your sd card.
This is where I got confused because when I went to bottom for flash alternate recovery, it was grayed out and said there were none available (though I know for sure it was on that card!). So I tried the one that said boot in to recovery for manual management and that is when I got the exclamation point. I just took out the battery and then put it back in so it would reboot normally instead of being stuck at that point.
-Go ahead and flash the ClockworkMod Recovery from within ROM Manager. It will then reboot for a while and come back up. When you go back into ROM Manager this time, the option will be there under alternate recovery to flash your Amon Ra file on your sd card. You can go ahead and flash it from right there.
-I think you also need to know that once you flash the recovery from ClockworkMod to Amon Ra, you lose the function/capability of ROM Manager. You can flash it right back though from here also, if you decide to. It seems to be a lot easier at first for the noob and/or less tech savvy to use the Rom Manager to cover the basics, simply because Amon Ra recovery is just so incredibly feature rich.
Anyway, I hope this helps and please be kind, this is my first post!

So let me get this straight... If I want root access but I want to stay on my stock firmware, I can just stop after I click unroot? At this point here, can I simply install SetCPU, leave everything else alone, and go on my merry way?
I've been switching roms around for the past two weeks and haven't found anything stable enough to float my boat that doesn't also involve problems with Pandora and/or Navi.
This might be the perfect solution!

Hi, struggling with this, can't get past back up current rom, when i do that it just hangs up at the vodaphone screen, take battery out switch back, when I use the home button and power on it goes to an exclamation mark, same angain battery out and power up normal, doesn't matter which recovery I use clockwork or ra recovery it does the same. am I missing something ?
I'm coming from the Eris to the DX. I've read every thread from every forum and am lost. I know that the DX has some blocks put into place, but has been rooted.
After that point every thread says Koush's Bootstrap Recovery is a MUST HAVE. Why? How is it different from Rom Manager? Is one better than the other?
I rooted using z4root and installed ROM Manager. I then had RM make a backup of the current rom.(Which is stock.) And it created a file in my root folder like usual. So isn't that what Koush's recovery is supposed to do?
I haven't found anything that directly answers this. So if this is another useless thread just say the word and I'll kill it. Thanks ahead of time.
I have found that now and then you will loose bootstrap (be it from RM, or Koushes, they install virtually the same bootstrap). When this happens, you simply open Koushes, click bootstrap, and it is fixed.
There are actually three things at work here.
1) Clockworkmod Recovery (CWM)
2) Droid X/2 Bootstrapper
3) Rom Manager
Now since the bootloader, kernel and recovery are locked down on the X/2, you can't replace the stock recovery with CWM. Rom Manager includes a copy of CWM, but is unable to install it. This is where Bootstrapper comes in.
Bootstrapper exploits a hole in the boot process by replacing a piece of code that gets called early on with one that lets you boot into Clockwork. When you click on Bootstrap Recovery it installs the bootstrap process, which lets CWM run on the Droid X/2. It also creates a file on the phone that CWM looks for. If it finds the file it takes you into CWM. If it doesn't find the file it continues along the normal boot process.
Rom Manager is just a convenient place to install roms from as it can automate the CWM part of the process.

So essentially, each one plays a role. But not one of them can do it all by itself. Thanks for the reply. This has been the most straight forward answer I've seen.
I have them both installed but pretty much use Koush's almost 100% of the time
to make nandroids and flash things.
The DX/D2 bootstrapper is, essentially, all you need. Rom Manager (also by Kousch) is a front end (friendly interface) for the DX/D2 bootstrapper. I usually have the bootstrapper installed since I can pretty much do anything I need to without Rom Manager.
Some options aren't available in Rom Manager (I think) since they aren't really necessary for Rom installation, download and backup.
Get familiar with both and then decide what you want to use.

You're on. It seems the DX is a different world from the mighty underdog Eris. And I hope the Eris defects can show the DX forums how great XDA can be. Thanks for the input everyone. Flashed my first, "rom," tonight with your help.
Guess there are more Eris upgraders out ther than I realized. It sounds like the whole bootstrap/rom manager issue was cleared up for you. I had the same questions when I first upgraded. I haven't even used rom manager since clockwork looks so similar to the good ol' amon ra. Happy flashing.

You can name backups prior to making a backup in clockwork with ROM manager as opposed to after with bootstrap. Other than that ROM manager is not needed.
Ok guys so here is a little something i have been working on for yall. some of you may know rom manager and all its abilities (download roms and flash them without needing a computer, aka "OTA custom roms") well its done. only one team has the roms up and listed right now. now here is for the issues;
-rom manager does not recognize anything but 2.5.1.0 which is the first version of cwm we had going. afaik there are no plans to let it see cwm3 on teh epic
-any roms put on the list will be under premium, sorry ive tried talking to koush but this means you would need to have rom manager premium
now i am hoping we can get more rom devs up on the list and push for cwm3 to be recognized so that users of a certain rom can get notifications of updates and download them via wifi/4g/3g whenever they want. obviously i dont expect people to pay for the premium rom manager when they cant get the free one working.
if any rom devs wish to have their roms added to the list i will not do it for you but after a couple of hours of screwing with the lists (they are javascript.... >.<) i can offer some help on what may not be working. i am in the irc channels almost all the time, if you cant reach me there then shoot me a pm..
P.S. you may be wondering why i posted this in general eh? because this is partially for devs, but its for the users of the epic.. if this is a feature you want then yall need to speak up cuz as it stands now its pretty useless, im hoping by putting this out there that there will be enough of a cry for it that the situation gets handled and then everyone can use koush's awesome program

No no no. I'm a moron disregard what I said haha.
All thats happened is ROM Manager thinks I'm running 2.5.1.0 when I'm not.
But; shouldn't this just be a redirector issue?
right but even with it thinking you have 2.5.1.0, what version of cwm do you have? does it pop up and ask you to install cwm version x.x.x.x???
I'm running cwm 3 running ext4.
Rom manager works on the phone; but anytime it needs to go into cwm it fails.
It'll hang at the sammy logo. Pulling the battery and powering the phone up normally does the same.
However..doing the three button recovery boot it attempts to load cwm and fails then gives me the Triangle with an Exclamation point inside it..along with the green android.
so how do you get into recovery? also is it 3.0.0.5 or 3.0.0.6?

3.0.0.6
I'm unable to get into recovery through the manager it self. Once I do the three finger salute..it attempts to load and fails; I pull battery and just hold the power button and it loads into cwm.
ok so sounds like 3.0.0.6 is sorta working but we just need to be able to get into recovery normally now....
3.0.0.5 is confirmed to not be working at all
I would love this... had premium on my hero, but sadly I cannot use it on my epic.

Seems to me like it's just a redirector issue; but I've yet to dig into this too deeply so I could be wrong.
It seems to work fine..it just has issues loading directly into cwm.
Hey peeps hopefully someone here can help with almost similar problem.
I used one click root with cwm recovery 2.5.5 in both 2.1 DI18 and EB13. The recovery installed just fine on both.
When I download Rom manager from clockworkmod it doesnt detect that the recovery is installed. I cant do anything without installing the recovery according to ROM manager.
BUT it is installed! Why doesnt it detect it??
How can I get the rom manager to see that I do have clockworkmod recovery 2.5.5 installed?
Or is it not possible yet? I too am a suckered premium owner.

I don't think that ROM Manager can detect recoveries on the phones partitions. I believe it downloads and installs recovery to the sd card.
I some how managed to get an older recovery installed 2.5.1 But still get "an error occured while downloading your recovery." when I click any option and select samsung epic from the prompted list. In an attempt to install the recovery.
If it doesn't install to the fixed partitions how does it install the recovery to boot from? I thought thats where it had to be? That would mean the current recovery I have is in the SD card? then a simple edit of a file would allow it to be detected?

I believe ROM Manager uses the stock recovery to redirect to a zip file on the sd. If the redirector isn't set up right it won't work. The One-Clicks we use to install CWM install it to fixed partition.
I do see that the ACS team is on board with this, hope to see more support soon. On my buddies Fastinate there is quite a bit to work with in Rom Manager, it is a very cool option.
Thanks to all the Dev's

No. Rom Manager sees our phone as a fascinate. Also, if you try to install through there, it will put 3.x on your phone, which is not stable for us. So far, the most stable is 2.5 cyan or red. I recommend red, since the latest roms are installed through it with success.
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248077
that has everything you need for ec07 clean (dibinged, deodexed, prerooted.) and if all you need is the cwm, it's linked there too.
The cyan CWM will work no problem also. It doesn't really matter. They're pretty much the same
I forgot earlier, you need to flash the recovery kernel in odin, before you try to install any cwm versions, or it won't read correctly. You only have to do this once. After that, you can swap cwm versions out all you want, as long as they are designed for us. Here is the link to Jaizero's post with everything you need.
