I've been looking for answers for a while now, but can't come up with anything...
Every MMS that is sent or received from my phone has all the files in it renamed ie: imagejpeg_3 or text_2 or whatnot. Has anyone ever come across this before? And if so, how do i stop it?
Oh, it is a sprint branded Snap, currently running the stock rom. I've also tried ookba's 3vo but got the same issue
Ouch. 150 people, and no one even has a suggestion? Oh well, I figured it was something i would have to live with anyway

Yeah I've noticed this forum isn't exactly the most active too...lol. I've asked ?? and got no answer and well over 100 something views.
I figure either it's a new problem and no one's run into it or they're busy with other stuff...lol.
Since I'm tenacious by nature usually I end up solving my own issues anyways...lol.
I can't help you with your prob but I can sympathize with ya!
Take care and I hope ya figure it out.
Well, there's something to be said for self-reliance and learning new things as you go I'm still playing with it, and hopefully i figure it out eventually lol

I completely agree, but when one needs help usually it's because they're at their witt's end...lol. I myself managed to hack the .xml and .cpr files for the t-mo dash 3g's "T-Mobile default" panel homescreen without help. Since I have a background in skinning I had an idea of what to look for with the xml tags, but if you're a beginner it's not easy to locate things if you don't know what to look for.
What I want is to figure out a way to design my own system wide skins for winmo 6.5 standard. I have all the skinning and graphics knowledge but only minimal coding skills. Even if there were a way to reverse engineer a skin I'd do it if someone would be willing to guide me in the right direction. I'll prolly post a help thread asking about it. dunno if it'd be a waste of time or not so....

i was wondering if someone can make a rom or a hack to allow htc hero to force roam? i just came from a palm pre and i miss this feature. and i heard lots of good things about the fresh rom... so maybe freshrom with force roaming ....any info would be greatly appreciated
This looks like the best answer I can find right now.

This sounds like something the CDMA radio manages. I'm not familiar with the lower level processes and configurations on Android, but this might be part of a closed source process. I don't know if Android is supposed to have such a thing?
You could try setting the Home SID/NID to the SID/NID of the tower where you work, and then set the phone to Sprint Only. This in theory should force the phone to stay on the roaming tower, but I'm not sure if this will override the PRL. Probably not.

However, we are expecting HTC to release Kernel source code this weekend. My guess is once we actually have it we will be able to see exactly how this is being done, then maybe be able to do something about it. There is a thread on this already if you haven't read it, but no definative answers. And I have no clue how to make the above work.
and maybe something like palms synergy?

I have never owned a Palm, I have absolutly know idea what that is lol
There's a thread going on already for this, no need for two.
A simple Force Roam search would easily get you to that thread..

Hi everyone.
Just a quick question.
As more people do the root and more info is found out etc will the process for getting root get easier?
I plan on waiting anyway until some roms are ready as i dont think i would benifit from having root at the moment, but i thought id ask in the meantime!
Thanks for all that put lots of hard work into it aswell.

Yes, it will become easier. Even if the method stays the same I'm sure someone will make it work with even less manual intervention.
But seriously, this method isn't very hard. The first releases had a few bugs but now most of them are sorted so as long as you follow the instructions you will root your phone. A slightly trained and enthusiastic chimp could do it.
thanks for your reply.... yeah thats what i thought...maybe it would be packaged up into like an autorun style situation with less manual steps....
i have been reading all the threads and whilst i am confident i could do it, there seems to be a whole lot of people getting stuck at places and purely because im not in a rush for it untill roms are out im going to wait....but by then hopefully it will be a shade more straight forward and less end issues.
ive come from a stubborn minded pc / windows world and just trying to dip my toe in where possible as i love my android phone!
again dont get me wrong im super appreciative for the work thats gone in to get this far!

I am sure more things are to come and you don't need to apologise for wanting to wait for them.
I for one sure hope it does...still no root for me
I have been a user of Windows for long lomg time and have loved it when I had the liberty to flash clean cooked ROMS onto my device. Rarely, I stuck to Stock ROM's or over bloated ones no matter how stable!
Will we ever see the light of day when the streak will get to see some cooked ROM's which are not bloated with added apps?
I got my Streak bout a fortnight ago - so far tested and mostly fixed on downloaded apps - but really pissed as I still have crap on my streak which I do not use - why do we need to live with this?
Am now looking to dump the 2.1 - but sceptical as I nee many bricks flying around for units purchased online direct from Dell....
I really hope to see some cook - take the initiative and start cooking some clean workable ROM's
I am sure it will not be long before you have your wish, Paul over at Modaco is the main Cook at the moment nip over he has a custom ROM

I have no idea what you're talking about. What 'bloated' ROMs?
Why don't you just open the update.zip, remove all the crap you don't need, resign it, done. Or, just uninstall the apps you don't want? It's not exactly hard to do.
You also sound incredibly ungrateful, these devs put A LOT of hard work into these ROMs and you just complain about a few apps they've included? If you don't like it, why don't YOU start making ROMs. This thread is essentially just pure laziness on your part.
Wow. "why do we need to live with this?" It's not essential to life, It's a ROM. grow up.

Chill out Meltus.
Am not sitting here to start another debate on disrespecting Chef's - never had that intention anyway if you had read my post with a clear mind! - I have been a user of custom cooked ROM's since the days of XDA IIs and never had a reply of such.
My title read - 'Moved from windows' - which implied that I am new to Android and still experimenting - infact I am still on my stock ROM on my dell online purchased unit and was only lookign for a way to uninstall Touchdown etc to save on space in memory.
Thanks for the tip on changing update.zip - now I have a solution which I can look into!
I said we dont need to live with this and it was not pointed to any Chef - it was pointed to Dell - who have installed all crap on the unit (which I am trying to remove) and being in a forum - you will have to appreciate - we all have the right to ask questions - some may be good and some naive!
So mine was naive - and thanks for your answers.

Ah, I apologise, I thought you were referring to ROM developers, sorry
Anyway, if you want to open the zip, remove stuff, and then sign it again, you'll need the signing tool - http://androidforums.com/developer-101/8665-how-signing-roms.html
Sorry again, i guess i just completely mis-read your post ><
Cool! am already opening up and playing around! if I have a brick in my hands - I'll jump out of the 3rd floor window and you'll have to carry me to the hospital

Haha, i think it's almost impossible to brick the streak at the moment, you can always just fastboot flash the stock recovery image then flash the stock update.pkg from Dell!
I'm a weak f***er so that's out of the question
I too have come from WM and have been using it since it came out in '98. One thing I miss is the ability to view and tweak the registry. Like on the HD2 just change
'Go to HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\P2\ EncodeFormat' to '2147483647' and you have loads of additional video recording formats!
You can also remove ROM apps by using Root Explorer (need rooted phone obviously) and removing the offending /apk files from /system/apps and then clearing the Dalvik-cache and rebooting.
I just flashed the 2.1 ROM on my AT&T/US Streak and got rid of Touchdown and Amazon MP3. No more icons I don't use, nor widgets to scroll through.
here's a good guide to it:
http://www.market4android.com/how-to-remove-stock-android-apps.php
Good luck.
Be careful about removing ROM apps, ive done this a few times and then i got endless process error....eeeek :S

Good to know. I was wondering if it was so easy, why would everyone care about what apps are installed if you can just zap em if you don't want them. Well thankfully I developed no ill effects from my deletions, and I removed those I really didn't want.
I'm not enough of a linux/Android gear head to know better. I'm a pretty good Windows gear head, but never knew Linux well which is too bad with all the cool Androids coming along in the handheld space. Oh well, learning new tricks is good too i suppose...
thanks
I don't know much about root with the mytouch 4g Or any phone for that matter A
except that it is considered very very good However it may or may not want a warranty that is where I hear different issues
Could someone clarify the two things first what are the exact benefits I get out of it. would it take me back to what I had on my nexus --basic android. nd
Secondly would it void my warranty? If so is there a way of getting back to the original factory settings where they would not know?
Lastly there is no way I would be able to do this is there anyway of getting anyone else to do it in person or over the computer By giving me instructions I know there is a list of instructions but I was thinking more along the lines of seeing or speaking to someone
I would pay handsomely for this
Thank you and this was typed and sent using Dragon dictation so forgive me for any misspellings or punctuation I correct is almost all spelling and punctuation till the end

1 - Simply rooting the phone would not give you the same setup that you had on your Nexus One, but it would allow you to get there. By rooting the phone, you are getting complete access to every partition on that phone and THAT is what allows changes to be made to the kernel and operating systems (aka ROMs). Unless you are a developer and know how to create your own ROM, you'd have to wait until one is created for us. Right now I believe there is one called Ice or something to that extent. You can check the Development section for that.
2 - Rooting technically does void your warranty, however there are way to get back to the original stock ROM/settings. There are threads in the Development section as well. As with anything that is in unfamiliar territory, take care and precaution when modifying your phone...especially if you use it on a daily basis and aren't sure of the exact steps to take.
Hopefully this was somewhat useful. Good luck!
Allen, and everyone, thank you
Yes, it does help
You say I can wait for one, or do my own, or use one by ??Ice.
Is that the one that was on the net, namely one like this, created by Scotty also?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/11/11/root-mytouch-4g-install-custom-recovery/
1. Is that safe
2. Is the "flash" the thing that can get you back to factory settings
3. As far as the ? about getting anyone to take baby steps with you in doing this OR somewhere to take the phone to do it, has anyone heard of this.
Lastly, Allen
did you know anything about the phone locking up after a break, when using WiFi (EDIT: Oops thought I mentioned this in the post above. fwiw, anyone know why I can use wifi over the net quite well, using my browser (not to confuse using the wifi calling app, as one gent thought I meant. But then after a brief break, it locks up. even if I switch back to hspa. I have to restart. any ideas?)
Again, Thanks Allen, and all
If the only thing you know about rooting is "its very very good" then my suggestion would be to not do it just to do it.... do your research first, learn the basics and what its all about, yes there are pro's but theres con's. A simple mistake could leave you with a very expensive paper weight. All I'm saying is there's no need to jump in to it. root was around far before android and wont disappear over night. The only thing that I can't stress enough is research research research.

For a beginner developing your own rom would be extremely difficult/almost impossible... no other roms have been released yet except for the ice one but that is the exact same thing as what you have now minus the stock apps
One problem with using other peoples roms is if you can't read the code you really don't know what your putting on your phone... with XDA a decent amount of us can read code and would say something if we found it malicious but what if noone took the time on that specific rom? unless you can read it that just brings me back to you really never know
So I guess that answers your is it safe question... its safe if you know what your doing... and don't get me wrong I'm not tryin to make it sound scary it'll be a 1 in a million shot to find a malicious file on xda but it could happen
2 flash an equal to install ... as installing a rom flashing a rom
3 no idea what you mean

thanks. No, that just about answers it. very well, I might add. I will wait
what i meant, is if there is one that comes out, might there be someone who will walk you thru it, i.e for a newbie either thru chat, phone, or somewhere to take your phone to get it flashed with the new rom
oh ok i see, you would probably not want someone to do it for you because youll need to do it more than once... if someone walks you through it at least you learn how to do it and you'll be able to do it next time (and trust me theres always a next time) if your interested in doing it i pm'd you my aim name and id help you out with it... its really quite simply when its broken down... but like i said before id do some more research on it first and come up with some reason you personally need root access because its importance to other people may not mean anything to you n vice versa.
Ok guys, I got my hands on an OTA and I'm gonna try to pick it apart tonight when I get home from work. Here's what I'm asking:
1. What do you want in it? I plan on modding it and trying to force it onto mine to test it, so I wanna know what you guys want.
2. What do you want removed? I know there is some bloat, Do you still want it or do you want me to make 2, 1 with and 1 without?
3. What do you want as standard? Pdf reader, file manager, custom browser, etc.
The sooner you guys tell me the more work I'll put into it.
I'll try to have a beta posted by the middle of next month, it may take longer as I'm no expert in coding even though windows is a hell of a lot easier.

I dunno if that's in your possibility but the camera performance in pictures is awfully horrible. It's been addressed that's a software problem, can it be fixed?

I take that for a maybe. If you manage to do what your trying to do consider making a "Donate" button. Be careful anyway others have bricked their devices with no-access to the bootloader (so no turning back).

Means eventually, over time yes its achievable. At this very moment, no, but in the future yes it can be fixed.
Until access to the bootloader can be obtained without consequence, I'm leaving it as is.
I guess getting it unlocked is the biggest thing. Once we can put WP7 Root Tools in we can use the SDK to deploy whatever XAP's we want. Won't need a registry editor since it (WP7 RT) already has one and a file browser. Good luck, we're all counting on you.

Ok, so yeah... my phone is now a paperweight. Can't turn it on, can't connect to my pc, cant do anything. A tad bit pissed now. The only thing that kinda makes me not care is that it was free but on the downside in my drunken stupor I broke my computer... So yeah. Really mad at that fact. So, I'm sitting at work bored out of my mind... Gotta find a replacement phone quickly. So I guess I'm out... Sorry Guys. Glad I messed up my phone and not someone elses.
