Ok guys, I got my hands on an OTA and I'm gonna try to pick it apart tonight when I get home from work. Here's what I'm asking:
1. What do you want in it? I plan on modding it and trying to force it onto mine to test it, so I wanna know what you guys want.
2. What do you want removed? I know there is some bloat, Do you still want it or do you want me to make 2, 1 with and 1 without?
3. What do you want as standard? Pdf reader, file manager, custom browser, etc.
The sooner you guys tell me the more work I'll put into it.
I'll try to have a beta posted by the middle of next month, it may take longer as I'm no expert in coding even though windows is a hell of a lot easier.
Working registry editor. Interop-unlock.
Other tweaks will come after those I guess.

The registry will already be changed for interop. Thats a standard.
I dunno if that's in your possibility but the camera performance in pictures is awfully horrible. It's been addressed that's a software problem, can it be fixed?

I've seen this posted. One thing many don't say cause they don't wanna get hopes up is everything can be fixed. It just takes some time.

I take that for a maybe. If you manage to do what your trying to do consider making a "Donate" button. Be careful anyway others have bricked their devices with no-access to the bootloader (so no turning back).

Means eventually, over time yes its achievable. At this very moment, no, but in the future yes it can be fixed.
Until access to the bootloader can be obtained without consequence, I'm leaving it as is.
I guess getting it unlocked is the biggest thing. Once we can put WP7 Root Tools in we can use the SDK to deploy whatever XAP's we want. Won't need a registry editor since it (WP7 RT) already has one and a file browser. Good luck, we're all counting on you.
A working compass driver.
Ok, so yeah... my phone is now a paperweight. Can't turn it on, can't connect to my pc, cant do anything. A tad bit pissed now. The only thing that kinda makes me not care is that it was free but on the downside in my drunken stupor I broke my computer... So yeah. Really mad at that fact. So, I'm sitting at work bored out of my mind... Gotta find a replacement phone quickly. So I guess I'm out... Sorry Guys. Glad I messed up my phone and not someone elses.

Has just been the absolute worse, I really wish core features worked faster such as accessing the dialer and all but my phone is lagging and force closing to the high heavens.
I have Taskiller, Advanced Task Killer, And Command Tab to stop apps running in the background.
On Cyans latest stable build with a smorg theme, apps2sd, no swapper or anything beyond that.
Whenever I text it lags behind a lot and commonly disrupts my sentence by opening the fancy input selection for letters. I believe this feature is accessed by holding the space down and a letter, I'm not sure anymore though.
But my last complaint lately is that my Gmail messages haven't been sending! :[
I really like my phone I do, but I need some help or advice.
My battery life also only last 4 hours and I barley use the thing.
I tried to call Tmobile about a new battery but they said my 6 months were up and they never have given my family **** so what should I do, I post a lot at Androidcommunity.com and I've been suggested to trying to get a replacement g1.
What lie should I accumulate?
And I know to set my phone back to stock when I send it back in.
Call them and tell them it wont cut on when you woke up, then if they choose to send you a new one just brick it.
hi,well not sure on whats going on sounds like alot .have you tried to wipe and reflash the rom? how long have you been running the rom before you notice this stuff going on ?i wouldnt think the theme is messing with the rom .but you might want to try to wipe and reflash, run the rom by itself with no theme and see if you get the issues fixed or not .as for the battery call htc they should replace it.they will be able to tell you how much longer your phone is under warranty .the number is 1 888 716 3594 in u.s.a after you try all that and phone still does it i would play dumb ,call t mobile and try to get a replacment.if you have trouble with tmobile just call the htc number i gave you and see if they will replace it for ya .goodluck

Yes I have considered going back to stock, I tried once but I couldn't manage to find the right link from rc.29 to 1.5 firmware. But I decided if it was stock I really wouldn't enjoy my phone.
Don't be sad buddy, if anything be upset over T mobile selling a beta tester phone at such a high price and then not providing a decent way to upgrade to a more well rounded device.

Yea I generally run into just about every problem you could imagine with my g1 lol but I love the device and I always manage to fix it, I re downloaded Cyans 4.0.4 and flashed it then added the x theme and it started working again, mind you I also re synced, and di a few other things here and there.
My current set up is pretty nice though and the device is running smooth and wonderfully thanks for the advice and help :]

The only thing more painful to listen to than a bald-faced lie is the justification for it. ::gets off soapbox now::
Roms slow down over time as **** piles on the phone, <most of us don't notice cause we flash too much> just time for some good old spring cleaning
Damn, I hate cleaning. Maybe I can get david's busload of ninjas to come clean for me, this place is a mess
Hi, I made the smorg theme. The last release I did was for CM 4.0.3 not for 4.0.4. That may have something to do with your phone slowing down.
My G1 has been doing that lately. It has been really lagging. But what I did was deleted all my texts which were like 4000 ( i forgot I had so many) my call log and I also deleted apps I didnt use much and it instnatly improved.
I am new to the forum, and I just bought a new G1 off craigslist tonight. ($150, new in box, with two protective cases). Why should I root and modify it? What are the benefits? What will I be able to do that I can't do right now? Links?
Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
EDIT: Oh, I should have said that I am not looking for another hobby or technological fun (I get plenty of that!). I just need to know what I have to gain before I dig in. Thanks.
If you have to ask that, just don't bother.

My reply is perfectly valid.. If you don't even know why you want root, what's the point..? Just be happy with what you've got.
Do a search for "Root" and just read.
Tethering (use your 3g connection on your laptop)
Apps to SD (the g1 only has a few megabytes of memory for apps/games, so you can use a lot more)
Eclair(live wallpapers, more features)
Multitouch(if your used to the iphone/ipod touch)
Hero/Sense (to get a different android experience)
SPEED! (some roms like superd/fastTest/CSDI are fast as hell!)
Themes (so you can make your phone look any way you want (pink notification bars ftw))
Thats about it.

Really, if you aren't looking for something you need to put a lot of work into, rooting and modifying your device probably isn't for you. Unless you want to be left with outdated and obsolete features. There are a lot of things about rooting that you really should keep up with. And if you can't make the commitment to it, it's probably best to just skip this.
But like I said before, you can do it now, forget about everything else and just keep outdated and obsolete features.
THANKS! It is a beautiful thing when a person chooses to be helpful and kind. I appreciate it.
I guess apps to the SD and the increased speed are the only two things that I would be interested in.
If the phone memory fills up, will anything else I install automatically go the the 2gb sim card?
I do not have a data plan and plan on just connecting to home and work wi-fi networks when I need to access the Internet. Will moding the G1 help with anything wi-fi related?

Don't get too interested. Due to the G1's slow processor, most multi-touch will be more like.. a bad synonym that I can't think of. Upgrading to the Nexus last week from this device.. was worth it.

That's basically what I meant, but with more words.
Well, after a couple days of using the phone and downloading productivity apps and games that I think I will use on a regular basis, I only have 10MB of space left on the phone. So, it looks like I will be rooting/modding out of necessity.

Well, it's over a year old, and something in the Android world is pretty much outdated after a few weeks
But here is some other reasons:
1) Not sure about this. Although, i'm pretty sure i remember using a multi-touch gallery a while ago.
2) I'm not sure why you'd want that anyway, it's pretty pointless. Also, that's only true for the home screen. There are apps on the marketplace that have 180° rotation. Cyanogen has also built in 180° rotation into his Nexus ROM so it could be possible on the G1.
3) I have no idea what the author means by this. Saving apps to your SDcard only means you can potentially install thousands of apps because they get saved to the SDcard instead of the phone. Also, i believe you can move the CACHE to the sdcard now too.
4) Downloading themes is very easy and incredibly simple to do now with Metamorph. It's pretty hard to 'soft-brick' your phone with this.
5) Not true at all. Everything is explained in very detailed tutorials. The only way you can mess up the Linux commands is if you can't read. Obviously, having a knowledge of Linux is very handy.
6) The firmware we have on our phones are MILES better than anything T-mobile releases, purely because devs get the OTA, mod it, and release something awesome, usually, the same day. Oh, you'd also lose root if you flashed one of these OTA's.
I'm not blaming the author of that thread at all, It's just things have improved ten fold since this time last year
Cyanogen has his 180 degree rotation in his newest Donut ROM (if you even really want it?)
If you use nandroid, there's never a reason to worry about a soft-brick. I nandroid every other day actually. Flashing something or not.
Finally, the person who got me into rooting was still running cyanogen 4.0.4 about a month ago and still loved it. you don't have to be "dedicated." of course, you'll be lacking some features you might find useful if you never update, but you'll still always be on top of a stock phone.
And, yes, meltus' famous louder volume hack. (If it wasn't for this I never would have been up for work with my mytouch alarm.)
Apps2sd - get a bigger sdcard. I have an 8gig class 6. payed 18 dollars for it on ebay (with free shipping) got it in 3 days. and yes, apps2sd might not free up your internal storage because of cache and all that.... but: it lets you install more apps. and: there are apps the clear your cache. you can even set it to clear periodically (mines clears every 24 hours.)
yes: I would suggest rooting, but I would also suggest that you read VERY closely and learn wtf to do before you ever even try.
I've been looking for answers for a while now, but can't come up with anything...
Every MMS that is sent or received from my phone has all the files in it renamed ie: imagejpeg_3 or text_2 or whatnot. Has anyone ever come across this before? And if so, how do i stop it?
Oh, it is a sprint branded Snap, currently running the stock rom. I've also tried ookba's 3vo but got the same issue
Ouch. 150 people, and no one even has a suggestion? Oh well, I figured it was something i would have to live with anyway

I completely agree, but when one needs help usually it's because they're at their witt's end...lol. I myself managed to hack the .xml and .cpr files for the t-mo dash 3g's "T-Mobile default" panel homescreen without help. Since I have a background in skinning I had an idea of what to look for with the xml tags, but if you're a beginner it's not easy to locate things if you don't know what to look for.
What I want is to figure out a way to design my own system wide skins for winmo 6.5 standard. I have all the skinning and graphics knowledge but only minimal coding skills. Even if there were a way to reverse engineer a skin I'd do it if someone would be willing to guide me in the right direction. I'll prolly post a help thread asking about it. dunno if it'd be a waste of time or not so....
sigh let's start the horror story. So I rooted my verizon LG G2 (VS980) phone yesterday using this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/10/25/root-lg-g2-versions-video/
I found that pretty easy so i decide to then be more adventurous and load cyanogenmod 10.2 on my phone since I heard it was officially on nightly release for verizon phones. So then i came across this youtube video explaining how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s3eO-jvNWk
I make 3 mistakes in this process:
1. i don't do the settings part
2. i don't wipe the phone
3. and most importantly i download the wrong cyanogenmod 10.2 version. I put the 802 international version on it instead of the verizon version.
Now my phone is stuck with fastboot with a black screen.
I can go into download mode and have tried the following guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
In this one it gets stuck at 49% loading when i use the verizon version
the second:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
here when i start to load it says my device is the wrong model because i loaded the wrong cyanogenmod
Now that i know why my phone wouldn't load the verizon rom (because i had cyanogenmod 802 international). I have successfully loaded the stock 802 rom on my phone. the bad part is the touch screen is all wacky and i can't get into setting to go into developer mode and finally fix my phone.
Any ideas on where i can go from here? If i could just get into developer mode i can restore everything by loading TWRP then loading the cyanogenmod for verizon.
Just an idea, but maybe you could use a mouse via OTG in the meantime.

thanks i didnt know i could use a mouse. I will try to find a cable that will allow me to do that.
I was able to help a few peeps with the same prob get back to stock. Pm me if you need help.
some updates.
I didn't get the mouse to help me around the touch screen. I just memorized where all the new locations where for example the middle of the screen clicked the bottom left
I have been able to get this european 820 stock ROM running on my verizon phone and have it in debugging mode.
All the other flash methods are failing me because i get "different model" error.
I'm currently trying to update my build.prop file so i can get the other flash methods to work since this is the file they are looking at to see if it's ok to flash with the rom you have select. Personally i find that kinda silly. I mean i'm flashing the thing give me an option that say "are you sure you want to do this? you are about to flash your phone with an compatible rom". Yes i'm aware i put the wrong rom on the thing now flash my phone with this one.
Oh it would be great if someone out there could post me their verizon build.prop. Would really appreciate that.
update
don't change the build.prop model number to VS-980. my phone is now in a reboot cycle.
I can get into download mode but i fear that i still won't be able to flash with the right rom because that build.prop is wrong. can i skip this verification step?
I also have twrp running but again it's the European version so the touch screen doesn't work properly. i can't swipe across to do anything even if i wanted to.
I would just do this and start over...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960

nothing against the OP BUT this is exactly why I DO NOT try to do this stuff. There's really no benefit that the stock ROM on this phone cannot do...and more...and I read so many reports of people turning their beautifully working phones into little black plastic paper weights. Simply not worth the trouble, time, and possible money :silly: to get a little more screen space, or a smaller NAV bar, or whatever.
And then so many people want KIT-KAT...WHY? Will it REALLY be that much better than what this thing can do now? Or will it just introduce BUGS like every other update always does to an android device? If, and when this phone gets an update to KIT-KAT or whatever version they decide upon, and it actually works without new bugs, then I will be pleasantly surprised. Here we have what just might be the best android phone to land on earth so far, and people want to "improve" it??? My $0.02

I can't speak to everyone else's why but I do it because I'm an engineer and here is what i mean by that. Ever since I was a little kid I would mess around with stuff even though I had no clue what i was doing. I remember the first time I took apart a stereo was because our living stereo broke (the CD player wouldn't play anymore and that's what it was used for mostly). I told my mom not to throw it away so I could see if I could fix it. I was maybe 10 at the time so of course she knew i couldn't possibly fix but she let me. In the end I couldn't fix it (hell i had screws left over) but it was just fun looking around and exploring. As I grew I still kept doing the same thing, taking things apart and explore. Sometimes I can improve the thing I took apart other times I completely break it but most of the time I can just put it back the way it was originally. That's my why.

Software to me is pure magic, but I'm very happy there's people that can code Roms.
Good luck mate.
Once you fix your phone and it's back to stock it will feel better than sex.
Keep stock for a couple of days and that itching feeling of "i need to do something with this" is gonna come creeping back

My $0.02

I am horribly confused as to why you are an XDA member. :-/
Support your Devs......
I'm having the same problem and haven't been able to get it to work. As soon as I flash the stock d802 (my phone is really d803 but I had a d802 custom rom on it before) the touch screen goes all weird and my phone keeps restarting.
I've wanted to grill out some of the problems with the A7 that's came with it, but after realizing I've never done this before, I've also noticed there's no actual ROM out yet
Should I just wait until the ROM comes and maybe some full guides?

Welcome to the A7 Family,

P.S. not every problem can be fix having root access

Really just cosmetic things like the notification bell, maybe switching up the emojis, small things. I always wanted to try a different ROM on this phone, so I guess it isn't anything that needs to be done right now.

just unlocked my bootloader and rooted. Wonderful being able to use my root apps again. Chnaged my emoji using emoji switcher which i really wanted to do. Hate the stock android emoji.. debloated a little, and now about to change the system to my favorite font. I say go for it. If you do, let me know. I can send some pointers
considering there is absolutely no rom support yet I would hold off, wait out your 30 day return period and if there are roms after that and you want to void your warranty then do it then. Also I'm sure people are working on getting the bootloader unlocked without contacting ZTE so there is another reason to wait.

If you want to wait until the 30 day period is over, you can go ahead. im keeping the phone for a while so ive just gone ahead and rooted. there is a method to unlock the bootloader without contacting ZTE. I did it that way. its fairly easy.

There is a fairly simple way to Unlock your boot loader right now, it seems to work for most people. Its possible they may figure out a way to block this in future updates (I am not an expert). If you are with in your retail return window I would recommend trying the method because if you manage to really mess something up, you can at least return it.
Just take your time.
The instructions are for multiple versions and slightly out of order. Make sure everything is working before you begin.
If you plan to go through ZTE and in theory void your warranty, then by all means wait until you really need it.
Good luck.

I just got my A7. Coming from OPO with a sultan rom running xposed. I want to root but honestly I am not super smart developer. I am good following direction and figuring things out. I honestly love Sulan rom and would love it on A& but I doubt he does a rom for it as he mostly is busy with school and sticks with OPO or OP3.
I am debating on rooting as I mostly just want xposed for its youtube app adblocker and in app blocking apps.
I would suggest waiting til roms are developed and little more mature. Which if judging by the speed of root being available I would say could be as soon as few months or less.
Big respect for the developers and who keep the community and advancements going. Thanks all!
Does anyone know a way to disable the notification bell with root? Thanks

I don't think you can disable the bell and keep the lockscreen exactly as it is.
