As a vibrant owner, I am officially jealous of all of you. - Epic 4G General

Anyone want to cough up their keyboard? I got a soldering gun ready...
In all seriousness, has anyone found a way to get this phone as either prepaid or without the data plan? I would probably switch if I could do either.

How's your batter life..and you coujld probably gt it working on the metro pcs..it is so nice having an android phone with a 5 row keyboard

i'm curious to the battery life as well on the other Samsung Galaxy X phones

Battery life is around 10 hours of heavy use. Video / PSX games. I just always keep a charger in my car and at work.
Thanks for the metro pcs idea. Will try that.
Sent from a Vibrant that i wish was a pure galaxy s.

i briefly had the vibrant and its about the same
but it is noticeably thinner

The vibrant's battery life is a bit better..I have to midday charge this phone..I didn't really have to with the vibrant

id much rather have a vibrant, i dont care for the keyboard and would rather have a thinner phone! i wish sprint will make one without a keyboard.

[Q] Rooted Evo vs Rooted Epic

I searched through the forums quite a bit and even good but have yet to find anything specific. I'm not sure which phone to get since I can not find a rooted comparison.
Please read about my HTC Hero and my original thoughts here:
jpklink.blogspot.com
Main Points:
Weight and size are not an issue: Glass screen is a +
Price is not an issue.
Standard Mini USB charging is a +
Battery life is not so important.
Texting Speed is 100% most important item - my hero can not keep up with my fingers and it is beyond frustrating.
I know this is the Epic forum so I can't say I don't expect you to be bias, but it would be nice to hear anything at all. Just wanted to hear how the phones compare as BOTH rooted devices with all speed benefits.
As of now the epic has an issue where it will miss keys on the physical keyboard every so often. Txlexting speed is also very important to me (I have an epic) and I have been dissappinted with the physical keyboard to say the least. That being said, the evo does not even have a physical keyboard and you could use any keyboard from the evo on the epic. The app "Smart keyboard" is the best of all that I have tried. The screen on the epic is also substantially better than the evo. The evo gets updates before the epic because it is an htc phone so that is always something to consider. Good luck.

If you fancy yourself with modding then an Evo is a clear cut winner. There are much more Roms, Mods, and source codes are always released first for HTC phones. Samsung has a history of not really supporting their devices. Epic is no exception. And if you look at the news today in the Android world, signs point to Samsung focusing on supporting Windows 7 phones in 2011 while Android will slowly move to the back seat. http: //phandroid.com/2010/11/22/samsung-focusing-more-on-windows-7-in-2011-but-will-it-matter/

Yeah you can tell how tarded they are by them having the hottest phone on the planet and neglecting it.
MLHickey:
Actually, I completely forgot to mention, I don't know that I would use the keyboard much anyway. I guess if it was there, I may start to use it, but I like the touch screen keyboard, I'm quite fast with them. In fact I still use T9 a LOT, especially while I'm driving. So as far as the keyboard goes, not a huge pro/con for me. When I mention texting speeds, I just want the phone to be able to keep up with me. My experience with the HTC hero is bad in the sense that I'll be waiting every few words for the phone to catch up so I can check for errors before continuing to type.
imwillzillla:
Those are some really good points! So if I root the Evo with a custom rom, the speeds will be comparable to a rooted epic? And how come HTC stuff comes out first/sooner? Just because the phone has been out longer?
Windows 7... ew. Those are definitely some good points. Do HTC updates and that matter much if I'm installing a custom ROM?
Thanks guys.
Note: I heard the Evo now comes stocked with something that prevents it from being rooted and still today they've yet to break it. Any truth to this?

Great news. I've been leaning towards the evo... looks like it's decided. Thanks again MLHickey.
Last note is, should I wait for early 2011 in case HTC releases something crazy. I mean, I can live on my HTC hero a few more months if I need to.
Just thought as an epic owner Im obligated to reply. The choice is a hard one, but the epic is faster, a better screen (even if slightly smaller) and since its basically stock android doesnt need roms like cynagen to be super fast and its only slightly thicker then the evo. You also get better battery life on the epic.
As for the keyboard, its really not that bad, and a keyboard is better then nothing at times when touch typing just isnt working out as planned.
I had the same hard decesion and luckily when I was visiting home a few weeks ago I got to play with my parents evo. Don't let the benchmarks fool you, the epic is much faster, plus that screen, you get size shock from the evo, but color and contrast shock from the epic. Plus you can install htcs awesome on screen keyboard on the epic. Its the best of all worlds in my book. The evo will have faster updates though, but really.. updates are almost superficial because by time android 2.2 is unsupported should they stop there you will likely be getting a new phone. Gps might or might not work better on the evo, some epics are fine, others aren't.
Just my 2 cents.

But what about Epic's ugly azz cool color temperature?! Whites look grey on it, screen has blue tint... sorry, photographer coming out in me, but Evo's colors are much more accurate.

I'm not tryna sound biased but u gotta be kidding me.. maybe ur gf's usage is much higher.. honestly 4 of my friends have evo's and whenever we're chilling on either of our houses, they fight over the charger.. although my epic is rooted and has custom rom+kernel and their evo doesn't but even b4 i rooted mine i had much better battery life..
The keyboard on this thing is not great, but it beats having none. WPM will not be high with this keyboard, although accuracy is not bad. Still, coming from a Hero, I really like having a keyboard now.
The main gripe is Samsung's poor support, small ROM, and the gps on this thing.
If you text a lot, this should still be your choice as it is faster than virtual keyboards.

Lets be a smarta$$ about it.
Anyways.
No. I have asked about the Evo's battery life and I quite frequently hear it hardly makes it through the day from people who DO own them. I've had mine unplugged with moderate use and plenty of calls since 7am and its at 40% right now at 11PM. Now to be fair.. my Epic is rooted with the battery sucking processes from Sprint/Samsung cut out, the Evo's i've heard about are stock. If both were rooted you'd probably cut similar results.
They both have 1500MAH batteries, they will both be roughly the same if you cut the fat out of each I imagine.
As for the screen, yeah the colors are not as accurate, but you're not going to notice, they have a cooler look to them which bothers the heck out of graphics designers and the like heh heh but really.. it's still stunning in comparison to the evo, but thats just MY opinion.
You really need to go into the Sprint store and play with both as much as you can.... you really can't go wrong with either of them and their pro's and con's split pretty evenly.
1) for the keyboard issue..try disabling Swype and use the hardware kb.
2) Epic even with the custom roms we have is doing fairly well...I mean take all the custom roms on the EVO and the Epic and you'll notice there isn't too much difference...most of the advantages EVO had was gotten from the Nexus One which hopefully we will get from the Nexus S.
3) You can do a bunch with custom roms on the EVO to make it run smoother but It'll never run as smooth as the epic.
4) The colors can't be more accurate on the EVO because its only 64k colors..if anything Droid X has probably the most accurate colors...but since EVO is only 64k colors it won't be accurate...the Super AMOLED tends to be mroe blue because the blue dies out the fastest...over time it balances itself out...on my device though if I set it to 100% brightness its white as I lower the brightness it turns grayish..but thats what lowering brightness is suppose to do...
5) Yeah.. texting while driving is bad...
6) Battery life varies by your usage..overall though if you configure it best you can on both devices Epic will win.

i had to read that twice, he wasnt talkin about you only having two cents... he was referring to owning both phones... just kinda seemed like u took that the wrong way...
Personally, I never got to actually play around with an evo but I will say these things about my epic:
The keyboard, though sometimes annoying, is a great bonus to have for those who text/email/im/fb/whatever a lot. And you can bring the htc keyboard over to the epic as well.
The battery life on custom roms/kernels seems to be better when compared to most evo scenarios (I don't have an evo so don't quote me)
The color temps can be fixed using voodoo color.
The phone DEFINITELY responds better to user input than the evo, hands down (probably due to the evo having so much bloat, and also due to the better built cortex processor)
Updates on the evo happen more quickly, this is very true. But our devs have done a great job fixing MOST of our major issues.
This is a big one that people seem to be failing to mention. The new froyo modems seem to FIX gps PERMANENTLY. I've been running wifi on my epic for days without a reboot and gps is on hot start (not using the cold start workaround) and every time I get a full lock within seconds (using gps status).
All in all, I love my epic and the way it runs thanks to our community, but if you want a more reliable manufacturer (and a community that isn't chock full of spoiled brats who's parents bought them the phone), go with the evo.
If you can deal with the slower updates and the forum nonsense, go with the epic.

Lol!
I think more kids end up with an epic over an evo just because of the keyboard. Look son it has a keyboard so you can type fast! "OMG L33T AHH! SWEET!" lol..
I wonder how many kids actually are on these forums when I was 12 I wasn't looking for ways to hack my cell phone... then again when I was 12 I think that Motorola "flip" phone that looked like something outta star trek was the most popular one for being so "portable". lol
uhm no, thats why there are sidekicks.. i doubt u will c a kid with an epic or evo..

Got the Thunderbolt but returned it. If you're undecided..

Well, I thought I would get the T-Bolt on launch day because the Incredible needed an upgrade. Well, if you're undecided, I thought I would give my take on it.
Like the Incredible, I was the only person in-line on launch day looking to buy it. The upgrade was fairly seamless until I noticed that the VZ sales rep scratched the piss out of the top and side of the phone. Basically, I said that I don't want to be a jerk, but you scratched the piss out of my phone and I want a new one. After a small debate with the manager, I got my second T-Bolt just minutes after launch day opening.. LOL, really lol.
Anyway, here is what I noticed...
- It's heavy, really heavy. The Incredible is a great weight, the T-Bolt was border-line hand strain.
- To me the screen looked faded and not as vibrant. The T-Bolt was sharp, just not quite like my AMOLED Incredible.
- 4.3" screen is large. My hands are considered a standard mans size and typing with one hand was hell. My thumb was just not long enough to reach the opposite side of the screen for typing. Two-handed is fine and quick thanks to the screen size.
- Battery.. With only a few texts and a couple calls my battery was in the 30% range by lunch. I unplugged it around 6am. The forums were telling users to disable the 4G.. Really? What is the point of this phone then..
- Sound. It's bad. Notifications and ring tones distort bad. I would decrease the volume, but it's hard to hear the sounds the way the phone sits. The kick stand in front of the speaker was a bad idea.
- Bloatware. Plenty of that on this phone. Just like most stock HTC phones. Anyway, rooting and Titanium Backup takes care of all the crap apps.
- Speed. It's quick, sense runs fast and launcher pro ran fast as well. But, the Incredible runs fast enough for me. Running Quadrant and Smartbench gave somewhat similar results on the phones. The graphics were quite a bit faster on the T-Bolt according to smartbench.
Anyway, I think the T-Bolt is a good entry 4G Verizon phone. Personally, I am partial to sub 4" phones. I am going to wait till something a little more refined comes along (4g wise). The DInc is still an awesome phone and still has plenty of life left for me.
BTW, the T-Bolt also has a front facing camera. I was stoked about that, too bad it was mostly useless until a good app is out for it.
Thanks, useful.

Hey, thanks for your review. If HTC releases a 4" phone with the Evo 3D's specs, I would be all over that in a heartbeat!
Edit: Minus the 3D (I hope that this 3D fad dies a quick death). 3D r&d money should be spent on battery technology.

Thanks for taking the time to give us your take on the TB.
About the battery, just remember with any new battery you need to condition it (Fully charge than discharge about 10 times) before you get good chunks of battery life.
I just love the optical trackpad on the Inc, and this is going to make it hard to leave. Unfortunately no new phones have any pointing device besides a full touch screen, and I don't know about you guys but I find it very hard to move the cursor or select text without the trackpad.
I got rid of my iPhone 4 and got the incredible. That's s whole different topic, but it was worth it. Thank you for your comparison!

Well I grabbed the t-bolt really so i can lock in my free unlimited 4G contract and continue to pay 78 dollars a month so thats 4g for the 3g price grandfathered in saving 480+ dollars over the next 2 years more than the price of the 249 on contract price
i swap nice clean refurbs all the time with verizon so a better phone is still in the cards for me just wont be brand new...but with the past refurbs i have gotten i really couldn't tell the difference

My exact feelings right now. Also without the 3D... The Incredible S(2) is said to have a 4" screen and front facing camera. And better battery.
DINC
MIUI
I would get the Thunderbolt, but honestly it didn't impress me that much. Droid Bionic looks better. As for screen size I'm switching between inc and droid X. Inc's screen is too small, but Droid X's isn't as nice. Games run 1,000 x better on droid X. So really the fascinate seemed to be the phone for me... Until the sluggish nature of it came out... So really I need a super amoled Droid X lol. Bionic's resolution may push me over we will have to see... Also I think the Incredible S may be a 4"er will have to see..

I went by on Friday to take a look at the Thunderbolt. I wasn't really impressed because it didn't look like it had the HTC Hub with the navigation. There were just not too many features that would make me want to go out and get rid of my Incredible.
I am at almost a year with my Inc. Personally I agree with the OP. The Thunderbolt is too big for my taste...and sadly the bigger phones seems to be the trend. Hardware is a marginal step forward.

No, you don't. If it was a NiCad then that would be something you would need to do but a lithium battery has no "memory." In fact, a full discharge hurts the battery more than helps. These batteries like to stay charged.

I'm here doing research on my wife's Dinc, I have the Fascinate & just want to add that the lag of the Samsung rfs file system is a thing of the past if you root. Once rooted you can load a debloated, custom rom & install a voodoo kernel & then this phone flies in quadrant, smartbench & real-world performance. Battery life is usually fairly stellar as well. Don't mean to troll or anything, just trying to offer info & experience.

Nexus One...still one of my favorites

I've went through a bunch of Android phones and no matter the horse power inside every phone the Nexus One is still my favorite. Yeah it's weaker than the Nexus S and the G2x, but the design of it I think is perfect. wish I could rip the guts out of a G2x and throw them into a Nexus One lol...just a random thought ...what do you guys think about the Nexus One?
Agree with you...I just gave up on the g2x after going through two of them. Back on my n1. I'm not as down as I thought I'd be. Except for the problems I *really* liked the g2x, but my n1 still just really seems likes premium device.
I think I will wait it out for the nexus that gets paired with ICS. Do we know who the manufacturer will be this time (I've been hearing LG?).

I agree. I too tried to move on to newer & better hardware'd devices. But N1, aka passion is still my favorite.
Pretty much agree. Still can't find a good replacement as the nexus is such a great device.
Have tried out most new devices in the stores, but they just don't "feel" as good as my Nexus!

Exactly. The Nexus feels so great in the hand and it's such a perfect size for a phone IMO.
I've been on my Nexus S for months now, but when ever I pick up my Nexus One, it just feels right in my hand.... and oh how I miss those docks!
Still feels new to me, but then I've only been using my N1 for 3-weeks or so. I only buy these things when they go under $200 on the used market.
It's significantly nicer than the MyTouch 3G I had before, and much nicer screen and hardware than my iPhone 3GS.
Even thought it's been said a million times, I so agree. There's still nothing I see worth lusting for, outside of 4g speeds. Hell, half of the time I'm on 2g anyway, because my 3g microcell chews up my battery so badly. Great build quality, great feel, great screen, etc.. It looks like then newer phones are trending toward a bigger screen, but I'm still not sure I want that. I just feel they really got it right with the N1.

3GS battery life is much better. I could go 2 full days without charging, and even when I would charge it after 2-days, it wasn't completely dead. I take my N1 off the charger around 7AM. I get home at 5PM and it's already down to 20%. It's usually close to shutting itself off by 11PM. It's not a huge deal because charging it every night is no problem, but the battery life is definitely not as good as the iPhone.
I've installed Droidwall to shut off certain apps from polling for mobile data all the time, so I'll see if that helps any.

I agree 100%. The Nexus One was the perfect phone a year ago, and the only things that the newer phones have that the N1 doesn't is 4G and front facing camera.
I will probably stick to only Nexus devices from now on. The Nexus S was a letdown for me because of all the plastic, and lack of SD slot and trackball. I do realize that the most if not all future android phones won't have trackballs
I'll probably stick with my N1 until the supposed LG Nexus comes out. I doubt N1 can run Ice Cream Sandwich smoothly, and the new Nexus is rumored to have a quad-core processor, it is probably time for an upgrade this winter.

Yeah, I think I'm going to stick with N1 until the N3, hopefully it looks nice and I would like to have at least an optical trackpad on it but I'm doubtful it will have one. Also I hope it's not made by Samsung again, the all plastic design is a killer... I really dislike it, I liked my Nexus S but it felt cheap. I hope it's made by HTC (with unlocked bootloader...which it should have since it's a Nexus) or by LG. No Moto or Sony(I think Xperia phones look disgusting with their same design and crappy plastic buttons)

Just thought I would update that using Droidwall made a remarkable difference in battery life. Where after 9-hours it would be at 20% before, now it's 70% at the exact same time. I guess one or more of my apps was trying to use the 3G connection all the time and sucking down the battery. I shut off 3G access to everything except the web browser, because that's all I use 3G for anyway. After 16-1/2 hours, battery is only down to 50% and even did a lot of web browsing on 3G during the day and Wifi this evening.

Can someone compare their Evo 4G to a GSIII?

I am now out of contract and thinking about moving to Verizon (for the LTE network) and the GS3.
But I'm actually pretty happy with my Evo, with roms like CM9 and MIUI its a totally new phone. So if someone has used both the phones, I'd like a little feedback about the GS3-
does it feel much faster than the Evo?
how does signal strength, gps compare to the Evo? I saw this thread - http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/443782, which doesn't give me hope for the Samsung radios
is battery life better? Currently I can get 2 days with light use on MIUI
Basically, its get the GS3 now or wait for the next Nexus phone in Dec which will have JellyBean.
I have never had the pleasure of using a GS3, but overclocking Team D.I.R.T's Remics ROM, which is based on the GS3, is a very nice substitute.

The speed difference is pretty big in my opinion. Coming from the evo, things like scrolling and going in/out of apps is a big difference. Scrolling in the browser is so nice after using the evo. I'm still holing strong with my evo too, my roommate just picked one up though and its a great choice. The galaxy nexus with JB is a good option as well. Just through a JB rom on and your good to go. I know its not exactly what you wanted but just thought I would share......
MEZOCLONE
Due to poor battery life I never used my EVO for much more than phone, email, and texts.
My S3 battery is much much better, the phone is quicker, etc etc. Having said that touchwiz takes some getting used to, the Samsung keyboard sucks(using Swype beta now). If you enjoy running alternative ROMs then start on your EVO for now. If you enjoy having new fast hardware then pick up an S3 or oneX.

Evo LTE battery is insane. 6+ hrs screen with 24+ hrs on. Wicked build, too. Unlike Sammy.

Do you have a G S III? The S III has comparable battery life and just a smidgen better than the LTE. Despite the polycarbonate body, the build quality is there. The device is smooth, solid in hand, and doesn't feel flimsy. In addition to not having an aluminum backing, it'll be less prone to signal issue, unlike I have seen with the LTE.
You cant even compare the two. Its like comparing a 1975 Cadillac Eldorado with a 2010 Nissan GT-R
All silly comparisons aside yes its WAYWAY faster GPS locks in fast and works great, and the battery is way better then my evo. I use both every day.
Evo=work
GS3=personal
Don't get me wrong, I loved my evo. I have had mine since Google IO when they gave them to us free. But come on the GS3 is current technology.

apples and oranges. my co worker has a GSII running cm9 and its stupid fast compared to my evo i can only imagine the gsiii is even better.
Picked my gs3 up today. There really is no comparison in terms of speed. Touchwiz blows hard, so I loaded up nova launcher right away.

I played around with my friends GS3 today and it is ridiculously fast and smooth. I tried overloading it with apps running in the background and it would not slow down. I will definitely pick one up for myself eventually.
I own both — just traded up
I actually on both phones. Contract on my EVO 4G just expired, and I decided to quit Sprint because the coverage just wasn't there in my neck of the woods. So I got a GS III with AT&T, and hated it for two days because it was giving me constant, nasty Wi-Fi dropouts. Then AT&T pushed out an update — which some people are avoiding because it nukes unified search, for legal reasons — but what's not getting much press is that it also solves a lot of connectivity issues. I suspect those issues were created by some kind of power saving attempt. In any case, I have LOVED the GS III ever since that update.
Unlike some other users on this thread, I really don't think that it "blows away" the EVO. But it's way faster and the screen is quite amazing. And it sounds like you're really tempted (just like I was). So let me just share my own feelings:
I'M SO GLAD I GOT THE GSIII! The Evo is still a way cool device, don't get me wrong. But the GSIII is the new world champ, and there's just no denying it. So go ahead do what you are longing to do anyhow, and nab it!
P.S. I've kept my Evo, by the way, even though it has no phone reception, and I joined xdadevelopers so I could learn how to root it and install CM9 like you did. So let me ask YOU — what thread or post should I go to first?
Check out hipkat's guide to the evo. It is in the stickies. Check out the smelkus amon ra recovery and if you go with cm9 you will want to partition your sd card with an ext4 partition. Do lots and lots of reading before you jump into all of this of course. Have fun!

You don't NEED to partition, just user preference really. Never felt like partitioning and never had a problem.

You talking about 2010 super phone with 2012 super phone with 2gb ram come on guys. I love my EVO and HTC sense to be honest can't compare this two if you want definitely EVO 4g LTE far away better than sgs3 . Do not make me wrong like speed test ,design, camera, kick stand and UI all this EVO 4g LTE .

I'd have to disagree about the Evo LTE being "far away better" than the GS3. My sister has one, and as much as I love the screen (it really is as good as they say), I prefer the way the GS3 feels in my hand (except that it feels a little more fragile), and the extra gig of RAM will make a huge difference when I flash MIUI on it. The camera seems to be about the same quality judging by reviews, so that's a wash. The kickstand would be nice, but even when I wanted to use it on my OG Evo, I was barely ever in a place to set my phone down. Speed-wise, I have yet to see either phone stutter or lag (except that the XDA Premium app lags on the GS3 when scrolling through threads; seems to be a problem with cached/caching images, but I never had a lag problem on my OG Evo), and they use the same SoC, so they should be about equal anyway. As for UI, I'm going to put MIUI on my S3 ASAP and would have done the same with the Evo LTE, so that doesn't matter either. Things I like better about the Evo LTE are the capacitive buttons and lack of a menu button. Not a fan of the S3's home button, especially the fact that it wakes the phone.
As for comparisons to the OG Evo, it's a different experience altogether (crazy to say since they're both Android phones), not only because of the new hardware, but also because of TouchWiz. I could compare them feature-for-feature, but we all know the S3 will win or at least tie for every spec (except HDMI, I think; a proprietary MHL adapter complicates things, but since MHL is standard now, micro-HDMI cables are harder to find and expensive). The things that impress me the most about the S3 are the speed (obviously) and the battery life. 6 hours of screen on time is normal with the S3. My Evo died around the 2.5 hour mark. It makes a huge difference.
This is off topic, but I was curious exactly how long the Evo's battery might last with no use at all, so when I got my S3, I gave my Evo one last charge and set it aside. I turned on airplane mode after a couple hours but left Wifi on (more out of habit than part of the test), then turned Wifi off after another hour or so (when I remembered it was on and draining the battery), and it's been in complete airplane mode ever since. Well, it's been 9 days and 16 hours since I took it off the charger, and I still have 50% battery left. I honestly didn't think the li'l ol' Evo had it in him, even if it is just sitting idle. I'm pleasantly surprised, but I can't help but wish the battery lasted at least a tenth as long when using the phone as it's lasting now.
I was going to switch to Verizon since I'd rather have LTE speeds for the same price, but the locked boot loader is making me think twice.
gs3 kicks real arse, how can i compare them. evo is outdated afaik.

Thinking of Upgrading from the Epic 4G to S4

So I'm really considering taking advantage of the Spirit BOGO and upgrading my wife and my Epic 4G to this S4. The big holdback is we both prefer a slide out keyboard to the Swype method, but I Swype a lot more than she does (or have more practice at it).
However, on the Epic, when I use the stock email app for my work (exchange server) the Swype keyboard does not erase words correctly and I have to use the physical keyboard to erase the messed up words.
I really need to be able to use this new phone for work and engage email is paramount.
So coming from an Epic 4G, do you guys think we'll have problems adjusting and will the stock email app work properly with the S4 keyboard?

Unfortunately I have no real insight to offer you on the email issue but I can tell you I was a die-hard physical keyboard person forever before finally getting the E4GT and realized the transition was easier than I thought. (I'd tried no keyboard before with OG EVO and gave up too soon). Also, I much prefer swiftkey to swype and swiftkey now has a swype function built into it. The beauty of Android is that there are so many keyboards you can try them out until you find one that fits you.
I can tell you, in ever other aspect of phone comparison, you will not regret moving both your wife and yourself over to the S4, especially with this great deal going on.
Good luck! I hope someone with more information on the email/swype issue can help you out.
Going from physical keyboard to on screen is like taking the training wheels off your phone. You've gotten so used to the safety net being there that anything else is scary. No top end phones have keyboards anymore. You either have to get used to that fact or continue to get mid and low range phones because you absolutely must have a keyboard.
I went from the epic to the sgs4. With the bigger screen and more sensitive touch screen it works a bit better then it did on the epic. You also have the option of the Samsung keyboard, kind of a mix of a stock keyboard and Swype. If you through it in to screen rotate the keyboard is huge but limits how much of the text you can see at once. If you're going for a new contract I believe you have the 2 week trial period to change your mind. I have loved the sgs4, works like the epic just way faster and an even nicer screen! With the higher resolution the pentile screen looks great without as much of the draw backs of pentile on the sgs1. I did have a issue with the first phone I got, wouldn't read my cheap sd card, an had an issue where the power bar wouldn't read correctly, always said 100%. My second phone has been solid and I don't regret the upgrade.

I am thinking I am sold on the S4. I am curious if anyone has had any problems with the stock e-mail app and using the SWYPE/SWIFT/Samsung keyboard with autocorrect and whether they have had problems deleted words in the app?
All I can say is do it. My wife had to have a keyboard too. Well after 2 days she loves this phone and keypad.
I dont have experience with the email, but if it helps I also came fron the Epic 4g. At first I thought it would be weird to not have a physical keyboard but due to the screen size it was a quick transition.

I upgraded to the S4 a week ago from the Epic 4g Touch, so not a big of a gap as you'd make, but this phone is amazing. I don't use stock email though, only Gmail. You do always have the 14 day window though, if you hate it exchange it for something else.
How is the signal quality after switching? Just curious how much better it'll be. My gf is still on the epic 4g,but will probably switch to the gs4.
Sprint 3g has been so terrible for her.. Usually 150kbps,and this is in San Jose. I'm thinking it's gotta be due to the poor radio in the e4g.

In terms of call reception, data signal quality, and especially GPS, the S4 totally blows the E4GT out of the water for me. It's superior in every single way. I still kept around my E4GT as a backup smartphone and use it once in a while and the differences are so great.
My wife used to own the epic 4g. The transition from physical keyboard to the s4 is a lot easier then you think. As far as signal reception. Its hella lot better but it all depends on where you live

Everything is better! I am way out in the country and the S4 absolutely destroys the E4GT, call quality, signal, ect. I used to get a lot of dropped calls with the E4GT and I haven't had any with the S4. My 3g was terrible on it's best day on the E4GT and it is soooo much faster on this phone. I wanted to wait for the Note 3. They gave me a killer deal at BestBuy though and I paid less than a hundred bucks. They even gave me 90 for my E4GT and the usb port was dead and would't charge the phone anymore. Can't go wrong though, this phone is a beast!

Unless you are planning to use a keyboard for terminal related purposes, the switch is not too difficult. I recently switched from the Epic 4G to the S4. I loved the keyboard on the Epic, and still have the urge to rotate my phone to type occasionally, but overall the boost in specs makes up for it. It is an overall better experience, and I managed to get used to the soft keyboard quickly.

This is kind of off on a tangent, but all this talk about keyboards made me think of Anandtech's review of the original iPhone from back in 2007. It seems almost quaint to read about Anand's struggles to type on a screen.

Honestly, all that does is remind me how little iphones have changed over the past 6 years...
But back on topic, I had moved from an original Droid to the EVO 3D without a second thought. Leaving behind the physical keyboard was an easy choice when you have an actually good modern touch screen like the 3D did at the time, and that the S4 has now. I have no experience with the stock email app, but with the sheer number of keyboard apps available, you're bound to find something that will work. Not to mention the stock email app is much improved in the S4 over the Epic.

I had an Epic, Evo, Evo lte, E4GT, Gnexus, Nexus S4G, Note2, GS2 & 3 and my GS4 runs Aosp better than all of the devices I've owned that aren't Nexus! Love this thing and have had no problems! Happy with my phone!!
