Hi guys, sorry for the lack of knowledge regarding rooting process. I have a very simple question. If I follow the rooting process, after I gain access to the phone which version of android OS will the phone have? Still 1.6? If this is correct is it possible to manually install 2.2?
Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question

We haven't even got 2.1 yet, so the answer to that question is no.

OK, thanks to a handful of very helpful devs here I now have 2.1 with root. But what does that mean? What is root giving me that I could not get from an unrooted 2.1?
I see I can now use tethering which I know was missing from 1.5, but is there anything else exciting I can do?
For instance, can I give my Hero a hostname on a network?
You care to share how?
Now you have the possibility to backup your whole mobile phone via recovery MenĂ¼ and nandroid, you also have the possibility to backup your programms with apps like titanium backup, and in the end you can install custom roms onto your hero
Sorry Andrew, care to share how what?

How you rooted 2.1 with the help of devs. There is a possible chance I might need to update the 2.1 post I did before about the root.

If this guy's asking what he can do with root, I think its unlikely that he would be making his own roms
PM me with what you need to do and I'll point you in the right direction.
Well, the devs I was referring to were you, 42turkeys and Lox_Dev. Maybe devs was the wrong term to use, I'm pretty new to this (as you may have gathered).
I followed the instructions at the start of the ** Official 2.1 UK UPDATE Thread ** thread...you wrote this, right?
So, do I have root..?
So, I'd like to upgrade my HTC Wildfires firmware to the latest one (not sure whether its 2.2 or 2.3 atm) and I'd like to do it via PC, connected with USB cable... How do I do it, what should I download, etc... I'm a complete newbie when it comes to stuff like this so any kind of guidance would be highly appreciated.
connect to wifi and ask yourself if you are sure you do not want to root or flash a custom rom. if the anser is no go to menu > settings > about phone > software updates > check now then follow the on screen prompts
IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT
WHEN THE UPDATE IS INSTALLING DONT DO ANYTHING STUPID (E.G. REMOVE THE BATTERY. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DEVICE
As the previous post said: IF YOU DO THIS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Unless you know why you want to 'upgrade' via this route I would highly recommend not doing it.
There are already Froyo (2.2) and Gingerbread (2.3) ROMs available in the forums immediately that can only be installed on a rooted device. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS IF YOU UPGRADE THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING, IE. THERE IS NO GOING BACK IF YOU UPGRADE THE WAY YOU ARE SUGGESTING. YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Apologies for the shouting but you really should understand what you will be missing out on if you can't root your phone.

Except from stopping any unwanted apps, not really...
Hi All,
I would call myself an Android newbie. But i do like playing with hardware... I was using Nokia N73 before this, so i am bit comfortable on Symbian. But anyways, i have shifted to Android and I have to these:
1. Root my phone.
2. Apply Lag Fix... my phone is slower than a Tortoise! Hummingbird is not humming.
3. Upgrade to 2.3.
I have discussed about #3. Need some some links on guides for 1 and 2. And then i will ask some questions.
My current SGS version is... according to Kies:
PDA:JP6 / PHONE:JP2 / CSC:JP5 (INU).
Read the Q&A section please, all these questions have answers there

Order of your list.
The order is wrong, you would need to do it 3,1,2 ofcourse there are other ways but ....
So do you mean to say that, after the upgrade to 2.3, the rooted phone will become an unrooted phone??

No, after upgrade you will have to root using the method best suited to the firmware you upgrade to.
What he meant was this...
1 - Upgrade firmware
2 - Root phone
3 - Apply lagfix
I see there are many way of rooting the phone. Which one's are the best for 2.3?

Flash a kernel that will get you root, (make sure it's the right kernel for your ROM), and if you want you can reflash the stock kernel after you've gained root, though if you flash the stock kernel you won't have lagfix

you will need to downgrade to 2.2 first. there is a guide in the development forum which will help you do that and then you can root using visionary or anything like that.
Got it done finally! Thanks
Once rooted can you upgrade to 2.3 and all will be fine or do you have to stay with 2.2?

If you flash any official update, you will lose root.
There are pre-rooted versions of the Gingerbread update in the Development section. That is what you want to flash.
