[Q] I'm about to buy a Samsung Galaxy S Phone - Galaxy S I9000 General

I'm about to buy a Samsung Galaxy S Phone and I want to know the following:
- how easy is it to root it (I'm very new to this, currently on HD2 and I've been running Android from it)
- how is the phone behaving?
- how easy is it to customize it?
- will the PS3 jailbreak work on it?
- how's the battery life?
- how are the picture/video quality?
- how's screen sensitivity/typing messages/emails on it?
Please be very honest on your answers, I'd hate to buy it and sell it two days after that because I won't like it.
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

1) use the search!
2) go back to 1
3) go back to 2
...
you get the point?
anyways, to sastify your lazyness to search
- too easy, just download the app
- perfect! according to my standards, others might say otherwise
- as easy as any other android phones
- no such thing as jail break, this is not an iphone, not applicable
- ok, depending on your usage, personally i need like 2 battery packs to last 24hr due my heavy usage
- excellent as a media center
- super sensible, some times you can just pass the finger on top, and it will trigger the action
so wont like the SGS, it's too good for you get an iphone4 instead then come back to the SGS

Thanks for your reply. I didn't wanted to search as people could just reply here with their experience based on my questions.
- about the jailbreak, if you haven't heard it yet, the Playstation 3 has been jailbreaked and you can achieve this with Android phones as well...HTC HD2 port included. I wanted to know if there's something going on for SGS as well.
Thanks again.

it is not called jailbreak
the proper name in Android, it's called ROOT as in Linux root su
don't use jailbreak as that is only applicable to iphones

Why don't you really read what I'm posting man...I refer to Playstation 3 jailbreak using an Android smartphone...
I know that for Android is ROOT and jailbreak is for iPhone but it's also for Playstation 3.

AFAIK there hasn't been any released packages for the SGS to unlock the PS3, specially because the SGS is not very friendly when it comes to acting as a Mass Storage device, which is part of the requirement to do the PS3 unlocking

Why the hostility dude? He's just asking some basic questions, yes they can be answered if he spent his evening trawling through hundreds of threads but even then he'd only get a fragmented idea of the current situation of the device. Wasn't the PS3 jailbreak patched anyway? ;p

Can you let me know if by rooting your phone you're loosing warranty? Are there any ways to get back to "factory state" if you'd want to take the phone to warranty?
some sort of HSPL for winmobile or something?

ofc you loose warranty, just like with any other phone.
Just flash a new stock firmware and click re-partition if you have to hand it in some place. should remove any trace of it.

Sony's already put out a firmware update to stop "jailbreaking", so I doubt it will be possible once your PS3 has hooked up to the net and updated itself.

both rooting and unlocking can be undone easily, to not void warranty

Has anyone been able to pull up their contacts when trying to write an email?I can't seem to get contacts to come up when I want to write one of them always have to write in their name. Also has anyone had problems replying to people? I hit reply and most times I do the name comes up blank!! Very annoying!

Yah I actually been having the same problems which is extremely annoying...
why do i waste my time taking apart my htc (g1 latest) devices in order to stop them creaking when i type messages on keyboard? or try and get the movable screen level when shut instead of wobbling (and creaking) on it's axis pin?
ho hum *yawn* will i ever learn?
i think this is my last htc device that has moving parts!
... i mean, when i type, it's like im on a boat, all i need is the tide lapping at my bow ...
Yeah trying to type while g1 is charging is downright ugly!!!

Lol well i have my doubts then something restores my faith in it. I just used mikey's tutorial sticky on encoding video's and after doing it and watching lord of war and the transformers on this beautiful phone my faith in the future of the g1 is once again restored!!!
Just wondering what all the hype about root is because I have no idea what I can do with it even if i had it.
Semi-interesting Android phone (not G1)
This is a little off-topic, but it might be of some interest to Android aficionados.
http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/android-powered-kogan-agora-pro-mobile-phone/
Kogan, an Australian company, is scheduled to release the first Android phone for domestic and worldwide shipping in January. Its form factor is something like an HTC Excalibur (T-Mobile Dash) or a Blackberry Curve running Android. But the price is the best point. The "Agora Pro" version with GPS and wi-fi will sell for AU$399 and the leaner "Agora" for only AU$299. Using Handy Calc, that comes to about US$260 (£175/205€) for the pro and US$195 (£130/155€) for the plain version.
Pros (IMHO):
Cheap
Familiar smartphone form factor with no moving parts
256MB on-board memory, 128MB flash, plus SD-card slot
624MHz processor
1300mAh battery
3G worldphone for everything but T-Mobile USA's 3G
Will work with AT&T 3G
Cons (IMHO):
Smallish resistive touchscreen
No 1700MHz band for 3G on T-Mobile in the US
Uses a joystick-like pointer instead of a more ergonomic d-pad
Same OS limitations as the G1 (bluetooth, etc.)
At least it looks more legit than the G2 phone that one company said was coming out LOL
I wonder... The phone looks alot like BlackJack III
, would it be possible to flash WinMo to the Kogan....
I like it I miss the candybar layout- a sliding keyboard that squeaks vs. no moving parts for me is a no brainer (actually the setup on the new blackberry is intriguing as well) It would be nice if the specs on the internal memory would start increasing, seeing as how cheap memory seems to be getting lately. If it worked on tmo's 3g, I would be all over it.

Haha nice, oh well I still like the Dash for now... Even though the G1 can do somethings that the dash can't.... and the 3g on the g1 is amazing... I wish there was ultimately a way to have an emulator on the g1...
Could anyone point me to the right direction of this all > What are Root, RC8, RC29 and RC30 etc. Is there a starting point on this forum about the phone, about installing apps, from market and pc (pc > dont think this is possible yet?). I was under the impression the G1 was as open as can be. Then what's the point of jailbreaking. Does the over the air update effect a G1 in The Netherlands? I've read alot, but I can't put the pieces together/in the right order, because I didn't start from the beginning. Thank you in advance.
I live in The Netherlands and we have 240 Volts coming out if the walls. In the US this is 110V if I'm correct. Is it possible to use another HTC charger bought in The Netherlands to charge the phone?
Finally got my screen to stop squeaking...
the easy way....

1) Go to the Developers sub-forum for the RCxx threads (more detail there than you will probably want initially, then not enough detail as you hack-away!)
2) installing apps are phone -> market or internet at the moment. I think there is a way to install from the SD card (which means PC -> SD) but I personally have not explored that method yet.
3) it is very open and will be more open in the future, this is still a "baby" phone/OS. The RC30 OTA was to stop 99% of the people from trashing their phones by mistake thereby reducing the calls to customer service. On the other hand, plain text typing from the keyboad (reboot, etc) wasn't a very good thing. We'll see improvements on this in the future. Personally, I think the term 'jailbreaking' is misapplied here, the iPhone has many more issues. As far as SIM unlocking, that is available free from TMo.
4) the OTA updates will catch up to you in the NL, I am not certain if you will get the UK version or the US version.
5)the US charger is autosensing for line voltage and accepts 110-240V AC, no need to buy another unless you'd prefer a native plug for the wall instead of the US 'spade' type.
Welcome to a great phone.

Connect G1 with USB. If you're missing the USB driver, get it here. Grab a copy of adb from here. Unzip it into the folder with the apks you want to install. Open a console, navigate to the folder with the apks and adb, and type adb install xxx.apk, where xxx is the name of the apk you want to install.
Anyone want to sell a g1 or maybe trade?
Is their anyone out there that would either sell me a g1 at a reasonable price or maybe trade for a hermes plus some cash. The hermes is a cingular 8525, unlocked. I have the charger, headset, usb cable, plus I just bought a new i-mate jasjam case for it. The only thing That is missing is the front camera. If anyone is interested please let me know. I know it is unlikely that it will happen but let me know.

Yep. Microsoft's 360 console was supposed to be unhackable as well. It didn't take long
we have found a way to hack any and all electronics in existance, the phone is rootable it might just need a newer mind to take a look. people get into their heads that things can only be done a certain way, there is always another way to do it. to name a few
ALL HTC PHONES
Sony PSP
PS3
Xbox 360
iPhone
mac computers
linux computers
windows computers
i don't think i need to go on, everything is hackable and can be messed with, sometimes it just takes a little more work and a different approach.

Or it could be that some people have that common knowledge? I knew it from buying a safe.
In any case, it really makes me wonder why phone companies bother with lock downs. Sure, some of the general public won't bother trying, but how much money is invested in locking us from root and then lost when a 16 year old kid cracks it?

Microshaft doesn't exactly have a strong track record when it comes to security....
Unlike Linux, which Android *IS*.
That being said, rooting ANY Android device is *easy*. Just not necessarily through the conventional back doors.
If you can read and write the chips, you can very easily make any modifications you like into the root filesystem, which can include adding an 'su' command. Only problem with this is that it generally requires a hardware approach, which is beyond the scope of the average user... who probably shouldn't be messing with root anyways.
I do, however, feel a bit of a letdown in this issue though. The unfortunate thing is that the carriers still are trying to call the shots (and generally succeeding due to popular ignorance). I would like to see this change -- there was once a time when you bought your land phone from the phone company and this is not so any more. Right now, most people are still buying their mobile phone from the phone company, even though it isn't necessary. I would definitely like to see more dealers for non-carrier-specific cell phones, and to have them show up in popular places. I would like to see these sold at places like walmart and radio shack so that you can just walk in and buy a phone with no strings attached.
There are a few reasons why I opted for an ADP1...
1) no contract,
2) no controls,
3) no carrier,
I bought it outright, its mine, and I can do what I like with it. People who are interested in the freedom of an unrestricted device should opt for this approach. ADP1 is STILL AVAILABLE, and there is not much about the new devices that improves on it.. sure I admit that having a little more ram would be nice, but the keyboard sure makes up for it. Yes, the majority of devices can be converted into an unrestricted device, but it just isn't right that you would have to hack it.

well at the last hacker convention windows vista was not hacked until many third-party apps were involved, linux was hacked long before that. i'm not saying that linux is unsecure because it is very secure in the since that you can't do much if you hack my computer. any real threat would have to have the root password and to get that you would need a keylogger

Dude, vista was hacked before it was even released.
And fyi; hacked = got root. Guessing at some user's password doesn't count. Hacking some particular server (i.e. Apache) doesn't count since it is run jailed (unless the admin is an idiot) and therefore won't let you get root. There have been a VERY FEW true root compromises for Linux, each and every one has been patched within hours (if not minutes) of it being identified, and due to the differing culture around linux, it is a matter of extreme pride to publicly identify security issues, i.e. if you legitimately hack linux, you are most likely going to take full credit for it using your REAL NAME and probably even provide a patch at the same time. Hack windoze though and you release under a fake name using a secure proxy in russia or china, otherwise MS will sue your a$$ until you die of starvation either through judgement or through legal expenses.
In Linux, you are a hero for identifying a security hole and helping to bring the whole thing closer to perfection.
In windoze, you are a criminal for pointing out the ineptitude of MS.

Your worst nightmare. Lost phone.

I've had the HD2 since November. This forum has been a revelation. But a few hours ago I lost the phone. It's gone for good. No insurance, no location software, unlocked, 16gb sd card. Adios amigo.
Perhaps not my finest hour. Sadly, I wasn't even drunk. Just fell out of my pocket in the taxi cab. It seems some people in Poland aren't that honest. I contacted the actual cab 20min later through the company but it wasn't there.
Anyway, I still consider myself a lucky guy. This was my first foray into the world of smartphones and through an almost free upgrade on t-mobile uk i got the phone for only 100gbp (+40 for the sd card). I bought a few apps and pirated quite a few more, so perhaps this is karma at work.
Writing this is somewhat therapeutic for me but the need to find a replacement is paramount so this also allows all you guys to share your wisdom, if you will..
No other phone matches the HD2 for screen size. It's pure luxury - ok its not AMOLED, but I've looked just now - and AMOLED is maxed at 3.7" - a significant downgrade.
The other issue is the pirating of software. I know it's wrong but I think we can all agree it's the most convenient way to test apps before buying.
However, WMP7S has left me somewhat unimpressed, I think Android is where it's at right now - development is on fire on that platform. Am I wrong? should I wait to see what happens on wm7 - i suspect that would take a year at least
So what are my options? Whichever phone I pick must be supported by XDA.... (I know I don't have many posts yet, but I chose my name for a reason... )
HTC Desire? HTC Bravo? Samsung Pico (Projector phone!!!) What's coming up?
I suspect this is the year of the smartphone and my academic year is almost up so I can perhaps hold off until the summer before buying. (Back to my w810 - still the toughest phone ever built imo)
Thanks for listening and hopefully replying.... time to roll...

I'm not proud but I'm not rich either - I'm trying to do Med School on the cheap and its not easy. If a simple google search gives me free software, only a fool would say no.
This has only been a brief visit to the Windows platform since Windows 7 came out. For 3 years prior to that I was using linux.
Virtually all the apps I use regularly,eg FPSECE, I paid for the supporter version. There's plenty of programs that don't survive more than 2 weeks.

You can Google a lot of things. So you should steal them? No need to respond. Just wait 10 years when you have your own medical practice and you start getting people stiffing you on the bill. They probably found your location via Google.
Touche, and a fair point. I wont try to defend piracy with any real heart - I accept it's wrong even if the end justifies the means ('end' being good software, 'means' being fracturing a few rules)
Thanks for the MyPhone tip - I've locked the phone at least.

Hmm... I'd say SEARCH. Cuz it's been asked before.
Brick it! There haven't been enough bricks yet for us to end up with any threads on "There must be a way to unbrick it, stop holding out and fix it you guys that broke my phone!" Those are always a good time!
For real, though... if you keep it stock you will be happy... check out Swype, it is amazing keyboard! Also take a look at the Live Earth Rotation wallpaper, is it my favorite!
I would also say unlock and root and flash a Cyan, then a Desire, then Enom's, then pick which one you liked the most, and rock that for a couple days, then flash again!
Hi there,
Yea have been searching but cant seem to find anything specific.... about the BEST things to do straight away.
Can you remember the name of the thread?

Root it and unlock bootloader....after that, start having fun flashing all the roms.
Ya def root it then put on cyanogenmod. Don't know how I lived without for the past few days. World of difference.
First, charge put hte battery in and don't turn on phone, charge battery up all the way until its turns green light, then wait another two hours then power it on, then don't plug it in to computer or adapter and let battery drain until phone auto shuts off this will calibrate the battery to last the longest. Next don't unlock/root it right away play around with it for a week make sure everything is right with the phone no defects etc, because one you root/unlock it you void your warranty. After that its all up to you!
Make sure the phone works well and there are no defects, give it 2 weeks to a month before unlocking the bootloader...

its hard to even justify it as a smart phone, maybe if I was not on a forced data plan I would think differently, if sold as a dumbphone. Just not enough apps to do anything with , and it takes about 60 tweaks to make it decent
I think the only thing saving it is the bing turn by turn released today, otherwise dont waste your time on this! Get a used android device, or the new sprint evo instead
Winmo 6.5 is dead, the market proves it.
And yes you can scour the net for apps but you wont find many that are any good, over all the phone sucks
Good for you. Good luck.
Thank you for your input on this matter.
Now, who are you?

So you had to make a post to feel self important. News flash no one cares. Go enjoy whatever phone you got. I on the other hand love the HD2 and think its an amazing phone.
I'm a long time user that has had several rooted android phones, an Iphone, Nokia phones, and much more. I feel my review might help some people in deciding

Well i have to agree i love the phone myself,It all depends on what your using the phone for if you wanted more than carry around one of those mini laptops. Most people that i can tell that dont know how to use something correctly normally dont like the product.compared to a droid n iphone i too have each of them and they dont hold water but thats anothe thread.good luck dude
I don't get it.
I've gone through 2 HD2s, do you guys NOT have freezing issues? or you just don't think there is anything wrong w/ having to reset the phone, deleting messages, not keeping large amounts of music files, having a slow SDHC card come with a high performance device, or anything of that sort?
we all know the problems of hd2 ,so we don't need you to remind us if you don't want to apply more tweaks go and flash custom roms ,otherwise go and buy another shi**Y android phones which has the settings menue of a phone 6 years old and leave us in peace ,
pointless thread please close it

+1. This thread should be closed. There are constructive criticisms but this just falls over the edge.
No point opening a thread like this oh and don't let the door hit you on your way out.

I feel your review will be more one sided and be nothing more than a bashing.

Well i hated the droid and the iphone is a greedy sorry ass company, and hd2 is an awesome phone and the only problems i have with it is because of my own doing which is my guess their problem to start,if you dont know dont touch it,
Good. Go away.
Threads like this ("No more HD2!") as well as HD2 appreciation threads should be against the rules. They're useless and a waste of space. If people want an actual review, they'll read an actual review. Sorry, but your brief spasm of trollbait material isn't a review.

I don't have any freezing issues. My only issue is T-Mobiles ****ty 3G coverage inside buildings.

I am so happy for you! Wow, it couldn't have happened to a better person! You go boy! Yeah, go far, far away!!! [By the way - saying you're a long time user then mentioning iCrap and Android really doesn't help your case. Any 2 year old can use those!]
But the way - Here's the official T-Mobile USA HD2 Update - Direct from T-Mobile!
