How to get the best battery life for push email users? - HD2 General

Hey guys I would like to get some feedback from you on what you do to get the best battery life. especially if you class your self as a power user or use the device for work purpose as well.
With me I have exchange email running for my work email, i have my hotmail/live account in real time sync and without even using it for calls I was probably getting to midday before the battery was depleted. I have bought my self the extended heavy duty "JayLo" battery which gets me through the day.
I do prefer to have the screen on full brightness as I am on the move and have 3G/HSDPA enabled as i need to check emails/browse to links to download files/attachments.

You've posted in the HD2 forum but your sig says Touch PRO
In any event, you could try a number of things to squeeze a bit more life out of your battery.....
1. Make sure BT / WiFi are OFF except if/when you need to use them.
2. If your phone is unlocked, try another radio - if signal strength is an issue where you are, your phone could be spending a lot of time/power searching for and/or hanging on to a decent signal.
3. Change the "peak times" values for ActiveSync to just be 09:00 to 17:00 (or appropriate working hours) and set the frequency to be "every 5 mins" or so - I don't think waiting 5 minutes for an email is OTT; they can take longer than that to arrive sometimes by the time several mail servers have virus scanned them half a dozen times!!!
4. Close any unnecessary applications; it won't make that much difference to your overall power consumption but, as the saying goes, "every little helps"!!!
See how you get on with that lot - I'm sure others will have some input before too much longer
Mark.

MDA Questions after a week of use...

Hello...
I recieved my MDA last saturday, and since then, have been trying to figure everything out. After multiple calls to tmobile, and even a trip back to the store, i'm still stuck with a few questions that i cannot seem to get answered.
1. The MDA came with the default Tmobile theme which works fine in portrait & in landscape, as well as the default blue Windows theme.
However, I have tried to install multiple themes(including some from microsoft themeselves) and i have one annoying error! Whenever I use an "installed" theme, the portrait screen looks fine, but when I open the keyboard...there are two large greyish/white gaps on the side of the theme.
Ex: I'm using a green theme. When in landscape mode, i have a single green square in the middle of the screen with a strip on either side(left or right)
2. My phone is HORRIBLY slow when and if ANYTHING 3rd party is installed. I've tried today plugins that control the memory usage(figured that would help)...however, it just slowed things done. My phone usually runs at about 14mb Free Program Memory, out of the total 44MB(This seems horrible...with just the default programs installed*for the most part* and maybe agile messenger running.). If i install a today plugin, or a game...this drops below 10mb. Therefore, phone usage can be very aggravating. I cannot think of any other way to increase this memory expect for ONE thing. Would it be possible to transfer ALL programs, applications, etc to the miniSD Card(i have 1gb now, with a 2gb in the mail). This way...i certaintly would not be topping out the usage of the card, and hopefully I can free up alot of space on the phone.
3. As we all know, the packaged IM programs are AWFULLY slow and inconsistent. After a bit of research and trials, I have settled on using Agile Messenger. I'm loving it...expect for a few things.
The MAJOR problem I have with it, is the pop up notification. Its annoying to be surfing the web or playing a game, just to have a pop up tell you that you have recieved a message, EVERY TIME you get a new message(which can amount to a great deal in a short time). I've looked all over for a setting, so unless I missed it, is there any way to shut this off?
A side issue with this program, and also the connectivity of the phone is...:
(even WITH the GPRS hack*always on*), I still lose connection(with 2-4 bars of signal) and therefore i get signed off of Agile, rather often. This isnt' such a problem with me, as seeing it takes a short time to log back in. However, when you look at the conversation from another person's point of view...all you see is
"Soandso" Logged off
"Soandso" logged on
etc
etc
(not sure if that last part was a question or a statement, but if theres an answer, i'd like to hear it!)
4.
My girlfriend has a sidekick, and I LOVE the feature of being able to set phone profiles for specific times of the day. Especially during school, it'll go silent, and the second we are out, its back on normal. I have downloaded PZP to try and fix this loss of luxury. However, I personally don't find the program to be very consistent. Sometimes, it seems as if say my "school" profile is fully functioning, while other times, it really doesnt. Call me crazy, but I have taken a shot in the dark and ventured to say that if one touches the volume button on the phone while the phone is on a specific profile...it will throw it out of its cycle. If anyone has some hints/comments/suggestions of their own on this program or other favorites...I would love to hear from you.
5. After I went about and downloaded the Eten dial pad skin, I noticed that all of my contacts were unable to receive contact photos. I quickly realized that any contact that was saved on my SIM card from my previous phone was stuck in this predictament. However, if i were to create a new contact account, it quickly allows me to customize them alot further. Therefore, i was curious if there was any way to transfer my contacts on my sim card>my phone in a fashion that the phone will accept them.
I'm sure i'll think of more questions(these are just the ones that I havent been able to answer after days of searching :-D)
Thank you so much in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
the speed of the HTC Wizard is very slow. That was my problem too.
for question no. 2:
Moving the apps to the card will result in more free space on the phone, OK, but running the apps from the card will also result in low speed, because the card is slower than the main memory. So I think you won't get more speed by this.
Try to overclock the device with OmapClock. My device works like a charm with 264 MHz (original was 180 MHz).
Use a tool like FreeUp RAM, which is part of the SK-Tools-package.
Running OmapClock and freeing up the RAM from time to time brings significantly much more speed. There is almost no waiting time if you click on an icon. You can even run Skype with OmapClock (many other users do so).
HTH
I have seen tidbits about overclocking through my endless searches the last few days. I've always heard that you have to be careful if you overclock a device, such as a phone. Has anyone had any known issues with the overclocking? Are there risks in having the phone run at that speed all the time?
The Wizard isn't slow. Install a Qtek rom without branding, and it will be much faster.
even the sales associate at tmobile seemed to think it was slow. Upgrading to a different ROM sounds ok, but i'm trying to keep everything via tmobile. thaks for the tip though.
Hi,
Im looking to get the Tmobile USA MDA, but after reading posts like this Im alittle afraid.
I need to run TOMTOM on this device and thinking that this might bring the device to a halt. Now Im starting to think that maybe I should get the 6700. Please let me know what you found out about making MDA faster. Thank you.

There have been long discussion about what is safe with the Wizard on this forum.
See, for example, http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=40284
Also, the SmartsKey app automates startup of OMapClock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41060
(It has a number of other uses as well.
Hope this helps.

There is a known problem with backlighting. See http://zendrui.free.fr/PZPForum/viewtopic.php?t=197
Also, check to see what events PZP is handling for profile-switching. For example, if you have calendar-based or time-based rules, they may switch your profile without you doing anything. Go to Settings, Control to see what you Switches you allow. Or check Time and Calendar for your profiles under the Configuration option.
As much as i'm sure overclocking the device may help, especially in my case. I'm just not sure if its worth the risk. Kind of hard to explain to Tmobile why the phone decided to overheat. Seems overly risky to make such an expensive device, run at higher speeds than its DESIGNED to do. But i'm still not sure, it almost DOES seem worth it...decisions, decisions...
Yes, Thank you for clarifying that...I mostly meant, the inconsistency of PZP with the timing of profiles. It seems as if the program will "switch" to the correct profile, but i don't always see a change in the operation of the device itself. Ex: I have it set to go to school mode at 7:30am, this past week(since its spring break, i've noticed that my incoming calls all had the normal ring volume, as well as system tones, etc...
Although it "says" ""School"" i don't really know if its truely in that mode?!
On this note, i have a question about setting the times(which is what i really want to accomplish). My phone goes to LOUD around 5:30am, School at 7:30 am, Normal at 1:55pm, and Quiet at 4pm.
Nooow, do i have to put two times in the school profile such as 7:30 am-1:54(5)???? so that it has an entire time interval...or can i just tell it when to start, and the next profile will automatically kick in and stop the previous.
Also, does putting the phone in standby or shutting it down have any effect on the profile??
I'm sorry in advance if i'm asking very basic questions, i've just been searching for a long period of time, and i usually can't find a specific answer to my question. So I decided I would spend the time to actually discuss MY problem, with hope someone can help. Again, sorry for any inconvienence or redudant questions.

I have a german T-Mobile MDA Vario (= HTC Wizard) and I'm overclocking it permanently with OmapClock and SmartSKey. There is no overheating as far as I can say/feel. I can speed up to 264 MHz (original = 180 MHz). If I try more, the device softresets itself without any damage or loss of data. It's a kind of security mechanism. Of course, battery life is a little bit shorter when overclocking it. But I'm sure, slightly overclocking doesn't damage the device! Maybe the lifetime of the device will be a bit shorter, lets say 6 months in 5 years, but you won't realize that, because you won't be using your device in 5 years. You will sure own some other phone when the CPU dies. Together with the tool "FreeUp RAM" (comes with SKTools), I can reach a comfortable speed for everyday use. But never forget: The Wizard IS quite slow, compared with other devices. You can find smart workarounds for that, but don't close your eyes on that fact.
For running any GPS navigation tools I would consider buying not a Wizard, but a much faster device, if you would ask me. I'm using my Wizard only for addresses (~ 700 items), calendar (~ 1200 items) etc., and without overclocking and using a program like Pocket Informant 2005, that would be an annoying, maybe impossible thing. At the beginning, I had to wait almost 10-15 seconds until e.g. the month overview was created. Switch to the following month - wait again. Choose a specific day - wait again. Oh my god! That needed more patience than I had.
Are you running a basic install without all the phone networks customisation bloat?
you can do this by hard resetting (you will loose data doing this) and then doing a softreset when the customisation dialogue pops up after setting time zone etc.
this will speed things up over an install with tmobiles bloatware. I run tomtom and my device is in general as reponsive as the magician it replaces.
good luck with your phone
R
So guys based on your opinions and experience is it worth for me to get the MDA or should I go with a different carrier and a XV/PPC-6700 ?
Hi yozh,
I don't know the 6700-device at all. Maybe we don't have it here in good old Germany, or maybe under a differnt name. Does it have a bigger display (better for navigation)? Does it have a faster CPU? Then take that one! In my eyes I would never like to use the Wizard for navigation. It's only a better phone, not more, not less. For all other purposes I would buy a bigger machine. I do not want to talk bad about my own device, I have bought it and I use it and it's OK for the everyday things I do with it. It has nothing to do with "I'm proud of my device", like some people seem to be here. It's a phone, man, not a Ferrari or a Rolex. You would tell yourself lies, if you would call the Wizard a powerful device. I had a Palm Tungsten T5 before, and THIS is a powerful device. 2600 items in the calendar (true!), and the reaction time was half a second if you tap on the screen! You can go and have a coffee if you do that on a Wizard.
Just think about it. If you buy a Wizard, try it for a day and then write to me what you think about that phone.
Mh. My english should be better, I know.
Just my 2 Cents!
Hi well the 6700 is the apache I belive and the CPU is 416mhz but its not a "dual core" everything else screen adn such is pretty much the same. Thanks for the reply
SO any one on this forums can recoment apache over MDA ?

See my posts on http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=48448 regarding processor speeds and TomTom.
Wow really TOMTOM runs better on the MDA then on a 400mhz DELL ? Then Im set defenatly getting the MDA, I like GSM network provide3rs better anyway and plus there are so much choices with the phones. I wish I was able to aford the JASJAS that looks really good.
Also don't forget that when you 'close' an appliation it does not really close, it just goes in to background, thus slowing the system down.
Check out your running processes and close all the ones that are not needed or load an app that really closed things.

Themes built for portrait screens look wrong in landscape view. Easy solution: build a theme that works in landscape view. The Guava Bubbles theme works fine in both because the background image is larger than portrait size.

I use PPC-Profiles-Pro, but you can't slave this to a time. Besides, I'd rather just put it on Silent mode by holding the connection manager button for three seconds (top left side button). Otherwise I use PPC Profiles to switch from Work (BT) to Home (Wifi, no BT) to Sleep (No Wifi, no BT, no email alerts or reminders, just ringer). Walking into a theater, I just go to silent mode.

After reading all posts: let's try to make a sum

At Christmas I will receive my HTC Touch HD and this is why I have started reading all the Blackstone thread since a month.
That is what I understand so far(correct me if I am wrong):
-Hardware: big screen,a bit less contrast than Diamond, but impressive resolution and really (probably for the first time) user-friendly device
-Battery: better than Diamond's one..up to 2 days of normal use
-Video performance: still a lot of work, but coreplayer works fine with low size movies or videos. At the moment there is no access to the internal GPU and only WMP can play smooth .mp4...big hopes for the future. People disappointed due to high hardware capability not used
-Audio performance: quality comparable to Ipod/Iphone, but TF3d interface has still some bugs to be fixed..however, a lot of 3rd software to choose the software we like most ( S2P for example)
-Camera performance: still a bit confused, it seems to be a "standard" 5mp compared to the level of other devices (nokia or sony-ericsson)...however there is no thread that show exactly the power of this camera with lot of pictures in different environments
-Navigation GPS: few bugs to be fixed, but we can use igo8, Navigon 7 and Tomtom 7 in high resolution
-Customization: like the other wm..you can do really what you want (change today, apply tons of software, etc etc)..there are no limits so far, except the hardware's ones.
-Games: let's say that the TOUCH HD is more a "business device" with media specifics...but still far from Iphone games. Let's hope in the future like for the video performance.
-Development: HSPL not yet released (after we would have a huge choice of ROMs!!!..)...hopefully a christmas gift

That astonishes me. I never get more than about a day with only sending SMS and nothing else. Whoever comes up to two days please tell me (and perhaps others) how to achieve that. I even stopped active sync and used the trick (empty active sync server) to not let it start automatically. Is there anything (perhaps obvious for others) I missed?
I think you just about summed it up.
It is a really nice device with lots more potential.
I'm sure you won't be disappointed this christmas!!

well, im looking for a better solution on the high quality video playback capability lol

there's probably something wrong with your device cause i always get over a day and a half at least i mean have a look this has been covered several times snd most members appear to agree that the battery has improved especially in comparison to the kaiser and diamond both very loved handsets
I must confirm, marvi0 is right. The battery should last for over a day to two days when the device is sporadicaly used.
What I see as potentional problems could be these:
1) bad radio version (i remember these issues on HTC Hima with old ROMs, they could drain battery twice fast than usual).
2) some creepy app, that takes too much CPU use. Remember that the more the CPU is used, the more batt is spend. The power-off works that way: it not only turns off screen, it also sends windows to some sort of standby mode, when most of the apps are suspended. But - if some app could not get to this state, it runs on full throttle on the background. I remember such issue with playing with WM5 screensaver and MortScripts. Check your taskbar, what is running there.
My battery now lasts up to 5 x days max if I use Tweak HD suggested settings throughout! This is an excellent App. As per the camera I wish this could be fixed / replaced with something like I originally used on my Trinity since the adaptive zoom/focus causes rapid movement to alwas go blurred, whilst static images or landscapes are fine.
Battery Last 1 n half day
After lots of phone calls, average sms and few songs...Battery Last 1 n half day...
Which is fine for me
max i got from the battery was 3 days only doing a couple of calls and some sms, i don't use any massive tf3d personalization only changed the background image, installed s2u2, crystal clock and optimized the phone cache, but usualy it's around 1 and half, 2 days
My battery went from 100% to 48% in the space of about 8 hours on Sunday as I was doing lots of stuff on it, trying to get apps working, trying things out, installing, uninstalling etc.
I then had the phone on standby all night (was 48% before bed) and it has been on standby most of today with 1 phone call and a bit of video and calculator, and still on 48%
Okay, I now got my battery life up to about two days with some telephony and SMS and bluetooth always turned on by switching of the light sensor and using a fixed setting of two bars for the light when using battery. This is enough (at least for me) to see everything well on the device in every lighting condition.

I'm surprised with your short battery life. I used it almost non-stop and still had 50% left a day later. I find the battery life of HD amazingly good. However, I did took the pain to charge it properly before starting to use it. Although the manual said we need only 3 hours to charge it, I kept unplugging the power when the charge indicator turned green, then plug it in again. I kept repeating this process for about 2 hours after it first turned green. This might have something to do with the long battery life I'm getting, perhaps.

Battery drains 50% a day...whilst idling!

Guys,
pretty much as the topic says...it drains about 40 to 50% a day when it is idle....if I am using it it can be anything up to a 1% a minute.
Any hints on where to look - tried using battlog to log the usage but i cannot open the subsequent file at all.

Wiggz,
Try checking if you're in a dead-zone with no reception? (Your phone may be constantly trying to search for a signal). Do this for Wi-Fi too. Make sure it is not constantly scanning for a network.
Similarly, open up your task manager. How many programs do you see running in the background? Remember that pressing X in Windows Mobile does not mean it closes the application, it only means that the application is minimized.
Cheers.
Wifi is hardly ever on. My signal is always constant, but I have my data connection on 24/7 for emails. The only program I ever see consume CPU power when idle is "changescreen". I always check that a program has closed properly when I click the 'x'.
I know data connection on eats some battery but jesus - not that much surely?

Wiggz,
The question remains, how many programs do you see when you open up the task-manager? You did not answer the question.
From what I've observed with my friend's Toshiba Portege, he lost 30% in an hour. He did not realize that he had 15-ish programs "idling" in the background with very little RAM use. Long story short: Turn everything off if you don't need it and just keep the Task Manager running. He now goes through the night with 1 ~ 2% loss.
Good day.

When I open up task manager I see 4 applications running (taskmgr, manila, cprog x2) - when I check the processes I have many more obviously. However these are all processes I'd expect to be running (gwes.exe, cprog.exe, device.exe, services.exe etc...)
Any more advice?

Wiggz,
Unfortunately, that's all from me (I dont even have this phone yet, I'm saving up for it in the next couple of weeks). Try turning off your data and see how it goes. But damn, 50% loss just on idling, something in the background is definitely killing the battery.
Cheers!
Thanks for the help anyway - annoying the crap out of me. My Artemis used to go for days without needing a charge...I suppose my battery could be screwed but I want to troubleshoot first before I bite the bullet on that one - suppose I could hard reset and see what the drain is?
Things idling in RAM should not have any significant hit on the battery life. However, having the data connection on 24/7 will indeed kill your battery life, especially if you're using 3g or higher (Edge drains alot aswell, but not as much as 3g and higher). Since emails seem important to you, I'm guessing you have it set to dl every 5min (which is the most frequent setting). If applicable, change it to 10 or 15; granted it's possible you do need to get your emails ASAP and you need the 5min frequency. Now regardless whether you changed the frequency of the auto dl or not, set your data connection to terminate after a 1min of not being used. This should help you get a good bit more out of your battery.
(I have emails dl every 30min and RSS feeds and push pages once an hour. Data enables itself when needed and then terminates after a minute of not being used. This allows me to get much more than a days usage out of the phone. The only way I kill the phone is if on top of all that, I listen to music/radio for about 6 hours)
Hope it helps
oh, and in case you don't know, HD Tweak is one way to terminate data after X amount of time of not being used.
do you have stock or cooked rom btw? duttys v3 xt, for example, is known to drain battery a lot.

Cheers for this. I have HD Tweak and have tried that data connection termination setting before, however there is a little comment along with it that it can stop data and/or voice calls. Has anyone had any issues with it?
Thanks
i had similar problem, battery got drained overnight or during the day with a speed of light... but in my case the bad boy was Palringo (IM) which was auto starting with every phone reset and did not show on taskbar...it is so bad that it drained fully charged battery in aprox. 6-7 hours. so now i hardly use it, and whenever i do i make sure its closed properly....

personally I have had no issues whatsoever. The voice calls that I'm guessing they're referring to is VOIP which uses your data plan to make the call as I don't see why it would interfere with normal calls. I think the easiest thing is just to give it a try, and if it doesn't work for you, then let us know and hopefully we'll be able to come up with a different solution.

Well the reason I mentioned it was that I enabled that as one of a number of weaks and ended up having to hard reset as I wasn't getting Texts in a timely manner etc....it was probably another setting but I couldn't be sure.
Will try again. Only other thing is that data connection on 24/7 is great for a quick browse here and there and stock updates etc...

why is that, by the way?
You haven't got Sprite Virtual Mobile installed have you? I tried it out on my HD and it sucked the life out of it for some strange reason. And it wasn't even showing up in task manager.
Is there a list of processes, services etc that we can safely remove/disable to work in the background? What say all?
glad this thread came up - my blackstone has been absolutely fine until I had the genius idea of "optimising" everything about 2 weeks ago with HD Tweak...
Now it's not HD Tweaks fault, but whatever I have changed means that it can drain a full charge overnight, and by morning its nigh on empty, i'm going to try and change it all back today, but for sure some setting I've changed is sucking juice like no-ones business.
FWIW - I havent installed anything during this time, the only thing i've changed is some of the settings - so it's not a "rogue" app draining the battery.
OT - sorry for the semi-hijack - I guess my point is that i'll have a play with the settings and see if I can determine what's eating the battery and then compare with other people.
that's fine (re: hijack) I think the two topics are closely connected.....not sure of the answer though

ta - me either - i've changed a few settings and made a note - will post if it doesnt eat the battery overnight over the next couple of days.

Something is killing my battery?!?!

So I am at work, looking at my N1, and I'll let you all tell me if you think there is a problem...Since a full charge last night, my phone has been off the dock for 2h9m ...
In that time, my battery has dropped 14% already. The biggest culprit...the display...with 59%...despite only being on for 15m. I always use it on the middle brightness setting from the power bar. Ive lost basically 1% for every minute the screen has been on. At that rate, my phone wouldn't even last 2 hours turned on.
Am I being paranoid? Do I have some rogue program sucking battery life? Your thoughts?
Everybody says controversial stuff about phones like N1 or iPhone regarding battery life. But I can tell you from experience and some conferences I have been the following tips to improve your N1 battery:
-Leave brightness to minimum. Only at street you will need to have it at medium or maximum so you can see well.
-Use 3G or wifi when available. It will save more battery than if you use edge.
-Use push, also it's better.
-User apps like TaskManager to auto kill some application that remain open.
And last thing, if you have a new N1 the battery life will improve with the use within the next 2 weeks. Also, I'm sure you are playing around more than usual if you just got it.
I hope this help you.

See what the figure for 'running' is, if it's high, something is stopping the phone sleeping. Should that be the case, chage the top drop down box to 'partial wake usage' and see what is to blame.

This is the complete opposite of what everyone else will tell you.
Most people say to force 2G (Edge) because it'll save battery over 3G. There are reports that WiFi will use less battery than 3G though, but not as good as 2G. Google even says this on the screen where you force 2G.
Push Email will require a constant polling on the internet. Since Android is a web OS, its probably connected to the internet anyway, but you can disable Auto Sync and Background Sync to save battery (once again, Google says this on that screen).
I agree with #1 and #4 though. If you don't want to do the lowest brightness setting, try the Auto Dim, it seems to dim it a lot more than my old Windows Mobile phones did.

Battery Drain
My phone would drain 15% battery in 1 hour just being idle witht he screen off. I dialed *#*#4636#*#* and changed the option from WCDMA preffered to WCDMA only. When I don't get a 3g signal (not often) I jsut go back to that and set it to GSM only. For one reason or another the WCDMA preffered SUCKS THE BATTERY!
4 hours of the phone being idle and only 5% battery drain! DO IT! IT WORKS!

You need to be careful of this. The point the video made is that if you download something OF SIMILAR SIZE, you will realize battery gains by virtue of the fact that what you are downloading/uploading takes exponentially less time to retrieve. The real question is, if 2 phones are both casually browsing for the same amount of time...without worrying how much information was actually transferred...one on Edge, the other on 3G...is there a difference in battery performance?
What the video said is just common sense. If I am going to send you 20 MB file and one way takes 2 minutes to download it and the other takes 10 minutes to download, then OF COURSE the 2 minute method is going to be more efficient. So you can download on Wifi where it might take x amount of time, compared to 3G where it takes 5x or edge where it takes 10x. Thus, if the file size the person is going to download is known, then of course it makes sense to tell them to wait until they are on wifi. However, many of us casually browse, on the spot, without regard to the type of connection we are on.

Yeah, what you just said is right. But still you are saving battery up! Plus I wouldn't use edge at all in my N1. What's the point of having almost everything disabled so I can receive calls?
I remind you that while edge is sending/receiving data you cannot get any calls

Thanks, I didn't know this, for the info this thread is full of great stuff...
1) middle brightness is very bright. I'm sure you can live with 25%. Display brightness will always drain battery like mad.
2) 3G power use is usually decent. The N1 has terrible RF so it might be fighting 2G/3G. That will cost you a lot of power. If you're getting full 4 bars 3G everywhere you go even underground, you might be ok, but in low reception areas, it's gonna drain your battery struggling to boost power. Bigger issue during a call too.I notice this on my Milestone. The N1 completely fails at 3G while my Milestone fights for it. As a result the Milestone gets quite hot.
3) There are sometimes apps that run in the background. Some people insist task killers aren't necessary, but lemme give you an example. Stupid Speedtest program failed to acquire my location. After a test, you can't really exit, so you just hit home. Droidforums fanatics will always repost that link to that one thread where they talk about memory and its ok to not have to kill an app. Think again. The GPS turns on because of Speedtest and it keeps trying to acquire your location. Gotta kill it with a task manager or that thing will kill you. Or a webpage. I've heard of people going to some site that keeps refreshing. Oh good luck to your battery. Make sure you close these things. Use a task manager. Sometimes Facebook or Twitter might be the culprit even if your refresh rates are awfully long. I do not understand this phone sometimes. At times I feel that multitasking/memory management on Android gets you into more trouble than if you just flat out restricted it like in the iPhone. I'm not saying the iPhone's restrictions are the way to go, but Apple knew what it was doing. There's a reason Android phones gobble power and pull data like mad even when you aren't aware. Random apps sometimes start. Facebook widget refreshes even though the app itself is set not to auto notify and to update on its own. So with so many things running loose, its quite easy to see why your battery can go down so fast.

I'll second this, I never used to use a task killer as I figured it was just extra drain on the battery but after running across some rogue programs that kept running after being closed and draining the heck out of my battery I decided to install taskkiller and set it up to autokill apps when the screen goes off.
It's really easy to setup just install it from the market then use it to kill everything then flip through your homescreens make sure everything is up and running and go back into task killer and add everything there to the ignore list and turn on "autokill when screen off" now you don't ever have to worry about rogue apps killing your battery again and everything else will function normally.

I'm sure 100% that while phone is receiving data over edge you wont get calls. I know because I had push enabled and afterwards I was getting SMS from my carrier that I have missed calls. It might say "ey sb is trying to call you" and then stop data transfer but for sure your will miss first call if someone is trying to reach you several times.
Check it out yourself.

there are a lot of people who say do not use a task killer, including google devs etc.
i used advanced task killer for the longest time, being used to needing one as a WM user before getting my n1. after reading various posts on the issue, i tested without and my battery life increased.
i use juice defender now as well to turn off the apn and wifi, based on speeds/location/etc
have it set to prefer 2g (dont get 3g at home)
screebl also setup to turn screen off when not in certain position in hand
last one is setcpu (need root for this though) underclocking the cpu (including advanced setting and profiles i have set)
lowest setting for brightness
also keep gps off unless needed
i hit about 24hr from unplug til 10% w/ heavy useage, wifi on all the time (although juicedefender handles when its on/off)
just now went to kmobs UV kernel and testing that to increase my times
i've done a 24hr test from 100%>10% based on each app i've mentioned
I think while we are on topic of battery life.. for those of you who are rooted. Here is another link that I would recommend. I used these on my HTC Dream and works great on the Nexus One. Increase your battery life 10 fold.

HD2 Android power saving APPS, worked for me

Ive been using juice plotter to check on my huge batter drain over the last few days since installing darkstone froyo v2, ive been slowly adding different apps to control the power consumption. I understand all rooted android roms have similar issues, hopefully a combination of these apps will help.
from stock darkstone froyo (ie no power control apps) i was losing 90% of battery in 7 hours. This was with wifi/gps/bluetooth off and not much usage. I also found the phone Stopping at 93% charge when plugged in. To fix this leave it plugged in and turn the phone off for 15 mins. Reboot android and It will have reached the full 100%. I think the android rom I have has issues charging on USB so I disabled the charge on USB in the settings.
Ok here are my personal findings I have on various power saving apps.
APP: JUICE PLOTTER
RATING: 4/5
BATTERY SAVED: N/A
PRICE: FREE from app store
shows a graphical chart of power consumption vs time , good for diagnosing how much extra power draw your activated features have (ie wifi, bluetooth) shows the time these features start and end at also, be it manually started or automatically.
APP: APP KILLER
RATING: 4/5
BATTERY SAVED: 30 - 60 mins on a full battery
PRICE: FREE, Pro upgrade is minimal cost from app store (gives extra features)
I set mine to aggressive killing. this improved my battery slightly, probably increased battery by about 30mins to 1 hr on a full charge. The main thing I like with this app is the automatic, set time, multiple killing of other apps. Unfortunaly i found the app killing not to permenant as some restart again a little while after. This has minimal battery save for my programs but depending what your apps/services are consuming on terms of resources, it can save much more. The auto kill stops the phone from been bogged down, it is much quicker to respond once its stopped other apps and wakes from sleep quicker. This app also shows you a list of all current running apps and services that you can quit, switch to etc. I found stock android to have this sort of task manager feature missing.
APP: SETCPU
RATING: 3.5/5
PRICE: free on XDA (donation recommended ) small price from app store.
BATTERY SAVE: about 1 hr - much Cooler running phone temp.
This app is very good as it can set you CPU speed to save battery. Mine is set to 833mhz when used, 255mhz in idle. 432mhz when the screen is off. This Saves small amounts of battery but still has a decent response and speed, also improvements on wake up from sleep. You can save more power with more conservative speeds, although your phone may be less responsive. On the flip side push up the MHz to increase speed and responsiveness of your hd2 for increased battery usage.
Upon heavy use of my phone with a high CPU speed I saw a slight battery drop with SETCPU, probably due to my CPU speed being at 1033mhz at the time.
CLEANED MY EMAIL INBOX
BATTERY SAVING: 7 hrs
I found that mobile web was constantly running on android. as I hadn't cleaned my email inbox fully a few emails from a month or so ago kept been synced to my phone to notify me. Once I deleted these My battery saved near to 7 hrs per full battery. I assume it was constantly downloading the old emails. So make sure you email account is maintained.
APP: TASKER
PRICE: just under £4. Cheaper from developers site
RATING: 4.5/5
BATTERY SAVE: 15 HRS
This is the greatest power saving app I've used.
I've set my mobile data to automatically be off. Every half hour it will turn on for 5 mins to update emails, news, weather etc. It will also enable web when I unlock the Phone. Disable web once I've turned off the screen. It also stops syncing at night so it doesn't wake me with a notification sound. This saves me an extra 15 hrs on a full battery.
One thing I'm doing next is to stop certain apps from booting until I need them. sort of a scalpel approach as apposed to app killers kill em all method.
one issue i found is the learning curve to be quite high on tasker but it wll only take 20 mins to get the hang of how to do what i did above. Hopefully the deveoper will make an easier interface but its still very good. The power saving feature of tasker is only a small part of the tasks this phone can do. It can literally Automise most tasks for your android.
Wth all these apps my battery now lasts on average for 24hrs upon normal usage, 30hrs+ on light usage (better than my win mob) and around 18 hrs on heavy usage.
Hope this helps any one looking for a decent power app. feel free to add your experience with these and oter power saving methods for android HD2
interesting thx.. so tasker is just a automater it doesn't actually stop the apps from staying open in the background or can it? thats the thing annoying me i kill all apps then i go check and i see useless apps still running in the background and i don't want to have to uninstall the apps just to disable them from running in the background. btw did u try the text to speech on incoming calls? im thinking bout purchasing it.

yeah tasker can be made to stop indivdual programs from booting rather than app killers stop em all. tasker keeps em stopped until you want to run them of course. you have to select scripts to do this tought. The program is amazing, you can auto set your phone to go silent when you walk into work, cinema etc etc by using GPS. Auto connect to car bluetooth once you get in your car, connect it for calls then stop bluetooth once you get out. Have your phone read you your messages once you have navigator on in the car, so you dont need to touch it. send an automatic sms reply to certain people, ie work collegues if your in a meeting..... its a full automisation program, the options are endless if you know what scripts to select to get it working.
I sadly can only do basic ones but in willing to learn, there are a few tutorials online for certain tasks, im just hoping the developer will release updates to make it easier for the advanced tasks.
lol ive just read this back and BTW i dont represent the developer in anyway, i only bought the app 3 days ago. I did a bit of research on it as thought it was a bit expensive and im glad i did buy it, it depends what functionality you want with your phone i suppose. I bought it as it cures my power options and i can taunt my mates who have iphones (i received a lot of stick when it had winmob on as the main as it kept having issues and wasnt very fun for me to use).

Im not sure in all honestly, ive not really got around to looking into other tasks apart from battery power saving ones. ive read a few of the posts on the developers website forum and he seems very good and swift at answering questions on the apps features. He also has a suggestion page for users to add stuff. Its one of the reasons that swayed me into buying it as hes clearly spent a lot of time on the development of the app, is very active on his site and seems update the app with newer features. His site link is on marketplace with his app.
Update; I've just checked my battery as I left if off charge last night. It was 48% when I went to sleep its now 40%. This averages at 1% per hour!!! Battery usage has now increased that I'm using it.
How do you setup your tasker? I got it but have no idea how to use...
