CCITT U-law .wav files - Droid Incredible General

2.1 played my corporate voicemail wav files which come by email just fine. Froyo will not. Can I add codecs to my system? They seem to be CCITT U-law encoded.
Running Virtuous ROM.
Thanks.

OMG I just realized that too after reading your post. This SUCKS.
-M

I covered this in another post but to be able to play wav files in froyo you must turn off stagefright. My solution was to create a script to enable and disable this option. To do this download gscript lite or pro (if you like it). Then create two scripts, label one "Stagefright on" and the other "stagefright off" below I've written the scripts for each of these. Now that they are created all you need to do is run stagefright off before listening to your wav file. You can even leave stagefright off it won't hurt anything but you'll take a hit in the performance according to the benchmarks like quadrent. I hope this helps I know I was bummed when my vm files wouldn't work in froyo.
Scripts:
"Stagefright off" = "setprop media.stagefright.enable-player false"
"Stagefright on" = "setprop media.stagefright.enable-player true"
Oh one last thing you must be rooted and have S-off installed for this to work. Non rooted owners are out of luck till Google provides a fix if ever.

Thanks ctinsley!!! Works like a charm...

Works great. Thank you ctinsley!!

Excellent! Thanks so much.

If you don't want to bother with the script (great find) and don't mind paying $2.99 for an app "Remote Wave" works great.

Thanks for the tip! I was having the same issue and kept forgetting to post about it.

I 2nd Remote Wave.

Can't work
Hi all, I am using Gingerbread 2.3.3 now and the gameboid refuse to work. When I tried to upload a ROM, then suddenly it stopped functioning. It worked perfectly fine when I use Froyo 2.2.1. Can someone help me? or do I need to downgrade it to Froyo just for Gameboid.

Issue with Pandora confirmed on 2.2 EVO

I have been experiencing some sound quality issues with Pandora 1.3/1.4 where it sounds like a tin can. All peaks are stripped out. like base and treble are all in the negative range. I have to run it in high quality range to get it to sound ok. Wit that said I get more skips and glitches/ interruptions. ;-(
According to Pandora support it is an issue with Froyo and how it handles AAC+ audio. I thought I'd share my findings and in the hopes one of you awesome devs might have a work around/ patch for the EVO.
Email from Pandora Support:
Hi Gregory,
Thanks for writing.
Froyo has a problem processing our AAC+ files. We have confirmed that this is an issue in the OS, and we think they should have it fixed in a future Android release. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.
As far as the error you're getting, sorry you are having problems with this.
My first suggestion is to power down the phone and pull the battery out. Put the battery back in, turn the phone on, and then try launching our app again.
If that doesn't help, try uninstalling then reinstalling the app.
From the home screen, press the menu key and select "Settings" then "Applications". Next select "Manage Applications". Scroll down and select Pandora. Then uninstall.
To reinstall, go to the Android Market and search for Pandora. You should also see it in the most popular apps list.
Let me know if this helps.

I'm using Pandora on FroYo just fine myself. Actually I remember some tin sounds on 2.1 but since 2.2 I've had a better experience.
It may be a problem in the Kernel which would make sense because I am using the netarchy custom kernel verses the stock one.
Either that or its in the ROM, but I use my own ROM so maybe that's it...
Are you using stock or are you rooted and running custom? If rooted do a nandroid and try Netarchy's kernel (I prefer version 3.7.8b for now)
I have tried the Stock Pre-release Rom and the current Stock Rom. I rooted both. There has been no reason other than this issue to move to a custom Rom on the Froyo since speed and performance for me has not been an issue. I do like the sense interface. (My Hero was a different story, slow and over whelmed.I customized the crap out of it since it needed all the cpu cycles I could get.)
Thanks for the suggestion. I might have to check out some other Roms to see if it is in deed a kernel issue.
There's an update for pandora in the market. Maybe they fixed the issue?
This issue has been addressed several times in this forum. The workaround is performed with adb commands at a Windows Command Prompt.
Temporary fix (no root required):
adb shell setprop media.stagefright.enable-player false

The temporary fix revert back everytime you reboot your phone.
For a more permanent fix (requires root and nand unlock):
-adb pull /system/build.prop
-edit build.prop (opens in DOS text editor)
-change (media.stagefright.enable-player=true) to (media.stagefright.enable-player=false) and save and exit editor.
-adb remount
-adb push c:\directory where you pulled the file to\build.prop /system/

That does not work on non-rooted phones. THe command executes with no error, but doesn't actually do or change anything (confirm this with a getprop command immediately afterwards).
In short, if you are on the 2.2 OTA you are SOL until HTC releases a fix (Google has already committed their code for it) or someone finds a way to root 2.2 OTA.

That command line does work on a non-rooted phone. The setprop command does not require root access. And as I said in the post, it is not a permanent fix. I know it does not change the build.prop file, but it does change your settings for the current session. If you reboot the phone, the settings return to enable-player = true, hence a temporary fix. Just issue the command again to turn off Stagefright.
So, dude, you are not completely SOL.

I know setprop does not require root access-- however, without it it appears to do nothing for the stagefright setting.
Running "adb shell getprop" and looking for the appropriate stagefright setting shows it is still set to true immediately after running the setprop command that is supposed to set it to false.
EDIT-- And a quick soundtest of Pandor/Slacker/Yahoo Radio after running the command shows no discernable difference in sound quality-- still sounds like listening to a low-bitrate stream.

After issuing the command, be sure to skip foreward in the player so that it buffers a new song. Any previous song that was downloaded before will sound garbled. I experienced this same thing. Trust me. Just let it run for a bit and it will clear up the sound. Skip a few songs and you will hear the difference. Getprop only tells what is in build.prop, but we are not changing build.prop because that requires root. Get it? So of course you will not see a change in getprop. But this does work. You just have to have a song buffered after issuing the command.

[Q] Why cant we do this for the vibrant

I had asked this before but wasn't sure it could be done. Well now its been done for the EVO can someone please do this for the vibrant. This has become even more important to me now that vlingo is free.
Link to swype with voice for evo
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752040
Can that not work on our phone as well, its the beta that determines what phone you have.... PM the guy who made the edits and ask. I would think it would work fine.
I have tried installing it directly as an apk and the install fails. I have also tried renaming and copying over the current skype and this has no effect, aka the keyboard for skype remains unchanged.
I also went as far as to try the original droid x file with the above two methods and had the same results.
Apparently there are some dependencies or other files involved.
Anyone have any ideas?
If I'm not mistaken you are supposed to flash via recovery. I spent like 3 minutes looking at that thread.
Thanks I missed that as was working with the origonal apk file posted. Trying the zip now
Keep us updated, that looks awesome
Ok ran and installed the zip file and no change. No errors but same as when I copied over the skype file manually. The skype keyboard is unchanged. In my case still the grey smoke colored version from eugene's vibrant4 build.
Anymore ideas? I would really love to get this working but do not know enough to reverse engineer what was done.

It would be nice if they shared what they did so we could try to reproduce it. I would love this mod combined with vlingo now that it's free, since Google's new stuff only works on 2.2.
I'll try to find time to download all the APKs from the various phones and see what's different. If you want to speed things up, send me links to all of them.
All I have is the APK file from the above posted link and I believe I have the original droid x apk for skype as well but it appears it is more then just the single skype file.
I have sent a pm to the creator in hopes he/she will share their secrets as to what has to be done to make this work.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...ent-on-samsung-galaxy-s-and-motorola-droid-x/
Does the i9000 have it? Maybe we can borrow their version?
Well.. what do you know? That EVO one works! Instructions..
backup your existing swype, just in case.
adb pull /system/app/Swype.apk swype-backup.apk
Change your keyboard to a different one, I just switched to the Android keyboard.
adb push swype-evo-tts.apk /system/app/Swype.apk
Now change back to swype. Mic button is now there and it works!
bug/oddness: The pop-up that shows you suggestions is now yellow with light text, it's damn hard to read some of them.
This fixes the word choice window to not be yellow anymore. I used the stock graphics files from the Swype that came with our phones.
Metamorph required, market.
Couldn't make this work no matter what I tried. Your directions were very good but they just didnt seem to work. I sent you a PM let me know what else to try.

You have to put them in the swype.apk. did you load it in metamorph? It's not an update.zip that you flash in recovery.
The screen looks the same as googles so maybe it interfaces with it but yes I hit the mic from the keyboard and speak and it works. I know it is somehow interfaced to vlingo as if I turn on filtering so I cant swear in vlingo setup then send a nasty text it filters it out. If i turn off word filtering in vlingo it sends the bad words.

Please tell me what you did to stagefright. I know Flipz made some changes to it but I don't know how to undo them. In my build.prop the player is enabled and it still skips a lot.
Thanks!!
I am using Fresh 3.2 and the new SiriusXM app is working fine for me. I'd say about 3 skips every hour or so. I actually only use this for Bloomberg and CNBC - I much prefer slacker and pandora for music, so a couple of skips is no big deal for me.
What I desperately can't figure out is how to record a live stream off the sound card (for lack of a better term). All recording apps seem to use the microphone only. Any ideas so that I can listen to specific CNBC shows like Kudlow on my ride home?

Just extract the stagefright files from your original rar file and then ad push or copy and paste with Root explorer into the system/lib folder overwriting the files that are there now
Then replace the build.prop with the one from your original rom rar file as well.

Is anybody having issues with SXM 1.1 and connecting in the past couple of days? Its worked flawlessly for me since the update, and I've been happy with it again. However, now, on startup, the application hangs on "Checking for Updates".
Tried clearing data, uninstall/reinstall, and hard reset fresh install. All no dice.

Fully working BT voice dialing for the Tab. Huzzah!

Greetings one and all! After much toiling and lurking on XDA (as well as some experimentation on my end) I have finally got my Bluetooth enabled voice dialer working flawlessly! I can now initiate all sorts of voice commands directly from my headset without needing to touch the Tab at all.
I shall now explain how.
Download and ADB Push/RootExplorer/Etc the attached VoiceDialer.apk to /system/app.
This one is different from the other APKs I've found posted on xda. I ripped it straight from my N1. It doesn't mute your headset when you long-press call and talks with a robotic voice instead of a flat beep.
Secondly (and what I believe to be *the* major detail) is an alternate lockscreen is required. The Tab wasn't really built for BT voice dialing (unlike the N1), so the stock lockscreen isn't programmed to wake and unlock when Long-press Call is initiated. In my case I used WidgetLocker because it is pure awesome. Worth every penny.
And finally I do have Google's Car Home Core & Launcher installed. While I question the direct correlation, I do know they do work closely together and frankly it doesn't hurt.
Feel free to install, mix & match as you please. Perhaps you don't need a 3rd party lockscreen with this particular iteration of VoiceDialer.apk. I haven't bothered to find out.
Also don't confuse this version of VoiceDialer with others posted around XDA. It is 72.8 KB where the others I've found are 40kb and 80kb respectively.
Best of luck and enjoy your new found headset freedom!
Nice finding, I'll give it a try. However, your VoiceDialer APK is not signed. I've already created a signed version, so if you don't mind, you will find it attached.
Anyone try this out yet?
Sounds great... Will try tomorrow.

You're welcome. An unsigned apk cannot be installed directly through adb. You will receive an error complaining about a certificate.
BTW: There is a newer version (2.2.1.4) of the Google Car Home App floating around here. Google made available a customizable version for Nexus One and Motorola Droid. However this version runs perfectly nice on my tab.

vlingo works from samsung apps, but you still need to do the lock screen thing, as otherwise you need to unlock every time you want to use a voice command, which is a bit of a pain.. don't understand why samsung wouldn't have implemented this!
Thanks for the tip. Vlingo works. I heard it drains battery though, is that the case for you?
I am trying out widget locker for locking the screen as suggested by the OP. Defeats the purpose of voicedial if I have to take it out to turn it on every time I want to call, I might as well dial it on the tab.
Edit: After a few hours of playing with widget locker, I still can't get bluetooth voice command going when the tab's screen is off...
