does anyone knows if there is a way to get the front facing camera on the I9000 to work over WI-FI instead of 3G with without fring? Im in the US stuck with EDGE on T-Mobile and my FFC only works on 3G
There is a front facing camera? Really?
on the Samsung S I9000 UK version there is a FFC but it requires 3G. since my phone is the UK version it does not have the 1700/2100 band that Tmobile uses for 3g so since all i can get is EDGE that is why it does not work. unless i go over to att and then get it to work over there
id=2
not sure if I get you right, - from a dev point of view the front-cam on samsungs is simply the 'second' cam, so code wise it's eg:
Camera.Parameters parameters = mCamera.getParameters();
parameters.set("camera-id", 2);
mCamera.setParameters(parameters);
or
mMediaRecorder.setVideoSource(2);
if the app you are using supports this, no problem, if it's your app or if you have access to the source code, no problem either, last you could still ask the dev of your app of choice to add this option
C.
ps:
on other droids and some OEM samsungs a special lib called FrontFacingCamera is used, the 'normal' SGS does not include or use this lib but just the normal libs with id=2

The Galaxy S Vibrant in Canada has a front facing cam too.
I could never get Fring to work as it would use the camera on the back, not the front lol. That was on 3G.
Update your fring.with the latest update front camera works perfect

that is true, the new version of frings does support the front facing camera. however I was reffering to the actual app that comes with the phone by default for dialing a video call. that is the one that I was hoping there was a way to overwrite some settings to get it to work over wi-fi

I just purchased a HTC Tytn (unbranded). I have so many questions and can't seem to find the answers. First, does anyone know a program that will update the clock with the network without doing the At&t rom update. Second, Will it hurt to do the at&t update to my phone or will I loose the voicedial function and 2nd video cam ect. Is the ms voicedial ver 1.6 worth it. So many more I'll make another thread later. By the way thanks for the forum. You all are great and I hope to learn alot.
I am on cing/att and using an unbranded tytn... i have also flashed the official att rom on it (yes, its wm5, but i needed PTT)... anyway, smartdial is there, but you will lose video calling (which att dont support anyway) but the fron cam will still function, i used atek software's cool camera to prove the drivers were still on the phone and working.. and i dont use MS VC 1.6 so i cant answer that one...
Tytn vs 8525
Shogun, Thanks for the info. I don't need the PTT. I do like the auto update feature for the clock using the network though. So far I like the phone, (I'm just starting to get used to it. Can you remap the PTT. I will start doing a lot of international flying soon and needed the unbranded phone. Does the At&t service determine the video or can 2 people with a tytn and a 3g signal just start video calling? So many questions!

Not sure about the auto-update feature and working on other roms... but they should support it..
The PTT can be remapped, use a different rom, or search for sleuth's PTT fix.
The video calling is dependant on the dialer on the phone (in the rom, or installable otherwise), it requires a certain dpadmenu.dll in order to work, but if your ATT its not going to work anyway.. it is provider dependant.. and 3G dependant
I installed latest camera from R3A rom with geotagging functions and it works great - when you have GPS signal. It means it works only outside and usually only when GPS was on before starting camera app. Else it wont fix fast enough before taking photos. So my idea was that phone support quick GPS fix through GSM operator network. Is there any way how to utilize this in geotaging feature of camera? It is probably hardcoded, but may be not?
I've been hearing conflicting reports about whether this has a front camera or not. Some say its a 0.3mp front camera while other says it doesn't' even have one, which is it?
yes it does,
http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/
? It doesn't say anything on their website about a front facing camera.
It definitely has a front facing camera.
It has a front camera, it was there on the spec page a few weeks ago.
But if you look at user guide on that site, under calling, options during video calling, you'll see

I'm not sure if there is a shortcut to turn it on, but you can change it within the camera menus.
I want my device now!! =)
there is videocall option in contact menu

This might force me to use samsungs dead-on-arrival-refund and switch to the both uglier and slower Desire Unless you have a solution.
The phone finds several networks where two are associated with my telecom-provider. One is old gsm and one is 3g/H. I search and manually picks out the 3g-network and gets an H-connection with 2 mbps (max for what I pay for). But this only lasts for about 10 - 20 seconds, then it falls back to the gsm-network.
So to speek, it overrides my manually selected network and uses an automatic pick and i get gsm with crappy 56 kbps.
I have done this:
1. a new sim-card (telecom sent me one)
2. Resetted the phone (samsung asked me to do this)
The problem is still there and samsung now say I should send it back to them...
But what are the odds that it will work on another device... the problem is probably a combination of phone + telenetwork. The simcard works perfectly in the same location on the Touch HD (blackstone) and the sales-dude that also claims to have an SGS with another network have no problems.
Swedish telecom-provider: TELE2
Help...! I dont wanna switch to a 9 month old desire and the desire hd looks like the specs are the same as sgs without the samoled and a too large 4,3" screen.
Have you asked the sales dude which firmware he is using? This sounds a bit software related. It can definitely be teleco, however I think you're paying a premium doing more than keeping up appearances should be important to them.

Did you try setting the phone on "WCDMA ONLY" in the network menu?
Every time the phone gets a stronger GSM signal, it will switch to gsm, just like any other phone.
Just disable GSM.
hmmm no i have not tried that... sounds quite promissing, but if it works that will result in no network at all if i go outside a 3g-area, right?
I have stock rom at eclair.xwjfb - i90000xxjf5
But where do i find this option? from a secret code?
in the network-menu i only have "use only 2g networks"
EDIT
Found this:
*#*#4636#*#* for battery and other general setttings like GSM/CDMA
Testing.....
EDIT
No change
I set it to WCDMA ONLY and tried all the other options as well. Most of them resulted in to network access.
###! this sounded so good
so all i have to do is type that number i get the option to only use 3G covarge right? is that how you did it?
Tackar!
yes but read it again - did NOT work
are you having the same problem with tele2?
Ah okey, such a shame. Nope, i'm using Halebop, but if you have this problem i might also experiance it aswell, hopefully not though..
But my phone had a really strange problem which caused me to send it back, it lost the signal completly, like i had no simcard in it. This could accur around 20min-4 hours, and i seem to be the only one affected by this.. really strange, hopefully i'll get my phone back soon without this problem, whatever it might be..
im returning it today as a d-o-a and will hopefully get a new one that works. Would really be a shame to let go of such a nice handset!
the wifi-radio cant stay connected to dynamic ips either, something that clearly works for others with sgs
Just replace it with another. I think your unit is defective.
There have been no reports of network problems with the SGS, and personally, i live in a place with terrible coverage, but when i set to WCDMA only it still somehow manages to maintain a good signal.
surely this could also be due to not all places being covered by 3g signal.
possibly but not likely sinse i can manually force it to use another network and then max out the payed bandwith of 2 mbps easily, but only for a very short period of time...
anyway, its sent away now. Hopefully they fix this fast
so, I have a couple Sony cameras that have the wifi/NFC feature..... which is great because I can transfer full res photos to my Note 3 wirelessly either wifi OR NFC (NFC method is a little faster). It's a great feature because there are times/situations when the Note 3's camera just can't capture the scene (especially in low lighting environments).
But the problem I'm having is... EVERY single time after opening the app, my phone stops receiving service from the carrier (Wind Mobile, I'm in Canada). I can't make calls, text or get internet/data service. Yet, the "4G" and reception tree would indicate that I have service. The only way to solve the problem is to restart/reboot my phone... which can be a nuisance
I'm wondering if anyone (by any chance) have had this issue, and if it's a bug with the app... who or where can I report this too
thanks in advance for any help
I have no problem with my phone. From Vietnam
