This might force me to use samsungs dead-on-arrival-refund and switch to the both uglier and slower Desire Unless you have a solution.
The phone finds several networks where two are associated with my telecom-provider. One is old gsm and one is 3g/H. I search and manually picks out the 3g-network and gets an H-connection with 2 mbps (max for what I pay for). But this only lasts for about 10 - 20 seconds, then it falls back to the gsm-network.
So to speek, it overrides my manually selected network and uses an automatic pick and i get gsm with crappy 56 kbps.
I have done this:
1. a new sim-card (telecom sent me one)
2. Resetted the phone (samsung asked me to do this)
The problem is still there and samsung now say I should send it back to them...
But what are the odds that it will work on another device... the problem is probably a combination of phone + telenetwork. The simcard works perfectly in the same location on the Touch HD (blackstone) and the sales-dude that also claims to have an SGS with another network have no problems.
Swedish telecom-provider: TELE2
Help...! I dont wanna switch to a 9 month old desire and the desire hd looks like the specs are the same as sgs without the samoled and a too large 4,3" screen.
Have you asked the sales dude which firmware he is using? This sounds a bit software related. It can definitely be teleco, however I think you're paying a premium doing more than keeping up appearances should be important to them.
Sent from my SHW-M110S using XDA App
Did you try setting the phone on "WCDMA ONLY" in the network menu?
Every time the phone gets a stronger GSM signal, it will switch to gsm, just like any other phone.
Just disable GSM.
hmmm no i have not tried that... sounds quite promissing, but if it works that will result in no network at all if i go outside a 3g-area, right?
I have stock rom at eclair.xwjfb - i90000xxjf5
But where do i find this option? from a secret code?
in the network-menu i only have "use only 2g networks"
EDIT
Found this:
*#*#4636#*#* for battery and other general setttings like GSM/CDMA
Testing.....
EDIT
No change
I set it to WCDMA ONLY and tried all the other options as well. Most of them resulted in to network access.
###! this sounded so good
so all i have to do is type that number i get the option to only use 3G covarge right? is that how you did it?
Tackar!
yes but read it again - did NOT work
are you having the same problem with tele2?
Ah okey, such a shame. Nope, i'm using Halebop, but if you have this problem i might also experiance it aswell, hopefully not though..
But my phone had a really strange problem which caused me to send it back, it lost the signal completly, like i had no simcard in it. This could accur around 20min-4 hours, and i seem to be the only one affected by this.. really strange, hopefully i'll get my phone back soon without this problem, whatever it might be..
im returning it today as a d-o-a and will hopefully get a new one that works. Would really be a shame to let go of such a nice handset!
the wifi-radio cant stay connected to dynamic ips either, something that clearly works for others with sgs
Just replace it with another. I think your unit is defective.
There have been no reports of network problems with the SGS, and personally, i live in a place with terrible coverage, but when i set to WCDMA only it still somehow manages to maintain a good signal.
surely this could also be due to not all places being covered by 3g signal.
possibly but not likely sinse i can manually force it to use another network and then max out the payed bandwith of 2 mbps easily, but only for a very short period of time...
anyway, its sent away now. Hopefully they fix this fast

There are a few thread's already on the site about signal problems with the X1 however many are quite old and I thought a specific one with a (so far so good) solution would be welcomed.
Many people have had problems with their signal being lost or being poor and there are posts on the Vodafone forums, here, as well as many other sites and many suggest they have contacted SE without much success. Mine got so bad I was ready to give up the phone and go to N97.
I had some advice from someone at a local friendly phone store about what may be the problem and he suggested (to stop me claiming on my insurance I'm sure) changing the connection settings so it only looks at GSM.....
.....I did this three days ago and since I have had no loss of signal and my signal strength has been better than ever.
To do this:
Start > settings > comm manager > settings > phone > band
Select your network type : GSM
Not sure of the significance of this change (from auto) but its worked wonders for me
Phone:
O2 UK, R3A, xperiatweak, mms changes, Dashwire, advanced config, spb galore
Good luck and I hope this works for you (let me know how it goes)
Found the same problem when I first received the phone, I too changed the band to GSM, mainly to save battery usage as 3G wasn't needed and noticed the signal is A LOT stronger...
Not noticed any downsides to disabling 3G either as my internet browsing is still very fast using Opera Mini.
maybe a stupid question: with 3g disabled, can the phone still lock in HSDPA?
i dont think so
in theory when its connected to 3g it should still have a gsm link as backup to switch to if there is a problem
still working
A week in now and the signal is still without problems and I've found the battery life of the phone is at its longest since I got the phone at the end of last year
In answer to other posts - I've remained connected to O2 UK Mobile WEb (GPRS, 3G) despite selecting GSM only
This is useful only if you don't need 3G or 3.5G... If your 3G coverage is ok, there is no trouble either... There is a huge change depending your operator and your location
i did this for a couple days and had to switch back. i've NEVER been able to connect to 3g (i have an X1i in america where the X1a is sold), but upon applying this change of setting i couldn't get HSDPA anymore and all my internet/data activities was like creeping death. i could only connect to Edge, which is practically unusable

nope! but its going to use EDGE which is also pretty fast.u probably wont notice the difference on a smartphone anyway.

lol are you kidding? when i'm on edge i might as well be tapping morse code across two cans with a string between them. everytime i pull up google maps on edge i might as well pay a homeless guy to steal me map pages, it would take a lot less time..... HSDPA is the complete opposite for me, everything loads almost instantly
I have my sgs for 2 weeks now. GSM disconnects around every 2 days.
At service mode (*#*#4636#*#* - Phone information) i can see this repport:
GSM disconnects:
====DATA=====
State: inactive
disconnected with last try
at 00:59
fail because No Error
The question is: why does this happen?
Is this an android issue or a hardware problem?
Any pointers?
Thanks in advance

That's not the problem.
Gsm disconnects just like that ,at home for instance. And when I notice that and try to reconnect (settings- wireless networks- mobile networks - networks operators) it doesnt find ANY of them.
Then I restart the phone and gsm network is back.
If I dont notice disconnection in time (so I can restart phone, people just cannot reach me....quite frustrating...
i see what you mean now.
yes, i've noticed that on mine too, but.... that's because i was fooling around with some new Apps Widgets settings i was testing to control the radio and data to save battery.
Did you install any new Apps recently that might cause that?

Well I installed all kind of apps. but i have the feeling this problem was happening even before that.
And I dont need widgets to control data ( I think) because I set the sgs to use 2g networks only and I dont have apn configured( section is empty. Internet connec. only via wifi.

Well, my sim card is VERY old (2002) and the carrier (Telfort) is roaming into another carrier's network (Kpn) with no extra costs of course like real roaming, but still roaming (I get the little "R" next to the signal strenght bars)
Anyway this never happened with the Nokia 5800xm running Symbian OS and using the same sim card...
Starting to get pissed of with Android...
With Symbian you hack or root or tweak because you want to, not because you NEED to like with Android....
And then you prob. get side effects...
Thank you guys for your time
I would get a new sim card if I were you. Every android phone that I have had seems to work better with a good 3g sim.
Get a new SIM card.
same problem, different phone
i have the same problem on kaiser with flashed android on it.
sim is 2 years old, and now suddenly this happened, tried differents sim cards, but the problem persists. My guess is, it is a software problem.
Maybe i will report when I flash original WM6.1 rom onto it, if you are interested in the result
btw, this happened about two days ago and because of this im buying galaxy s so i hope the problem will be gone with new phone

Why you think the problem will be gone if it's still android and I also got it with my sgs? Or are you counting on Froyo?
Yesterday I upgraded my sgs to froyo jpc with kies. I am new with Android but the post of Aery was so clear that i didnt resist: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=769400&highlight=froyo+upgrade
I did get stuck on reboot but could get out of it after applying a cache/data/factory reset on recovery mode (3 buttons)
Now I am being carefull with the 3rd party apps., and so far so good, no gsm disconnections .
Froyo is of course better that eclair but Android is still disappointing to me.
You flashed Android onto a WM device (i'm impressed); could you not teach me how to flash Symbian onto my SGS?
Voice dialing (over bluetooth or not) and proper connectivity control (network, data, gps and bluetooth) of android is years behind Symbian; and such a well written, light OS, it will just fly on a high-end hardware like the sgs; but that is an issue for another thread.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7938430#post7938430
Pls keep reporting..

I think indeed that's not the same issue. My problem is that the radio signal get turned off during inactivity. That's why I got connection back after reboot: radio signal gets turned on again; later I learned how to turn radio signal back on without rebooting, but that is just a remedy , no real solution.
Try to upgrade to froyo, make a factory reset and be carefull with 3rd party apps. With froyo you will need less interfering tools anyway
I dont thing that my old sim card is the problem, but i'll try to replace it anyway...but first things first
Btw dou you have 3g turned on? Cause I never...
Another mistery: When I have 3G on I see those bars (signal strenght) dancing and that "death grip" thing happening:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LROTHrTR92k
But when I have it on 2G only the bars doesnt move even if I strangle it with both hands.....
Please repport later how it's going...
I had the same issue, i sent mine back and got my money back, i had also tried with different simcards and resets and nothing worked.. so hopefully my new galaxy wont have this problem. Its strange that these problems are so rare though.. But as long i get it going ill be a happy man.
fourth day with JPC ( and 4 days after a factory reset) so far so good no disconnections . I think problem is gone...
Today just to be safe, I got a new sim card....the other one was too old anyway(8 years)
i have the same issue, for a few days i can't get 3g. i'm seriously wondering about sending back my sgs. i've ttried all the settings, changed my sim..nothing...begin to think it was a fullish thing to change Desire to SGS..

Well... this is not the same issue.
I have 3G (WCDMA) disabled. I only use 2G (GSM) and WIFI for data/internet connection.
I Dont have a data account, I dont need it therefore I disabled 3G in order to save battery.
If you do want to use 3G, just go to settings - wireless and network - mobile network settings - network mode and set auto-mode (GSM/WCDMA or 3G/2G)
If it doesn't work, apply a data/factory reset and try again.
And if it doesnt work, it's probably hardware related and you should return it or send it for repair.
My issue is more complicated; next to the fact that I dont want to use 3g, my carrier is roaming to another network and probably Android OS or the firmware cannot handle it properly.
Android is still premature and the "Samsung - Android integration" seems to need a lot of development as well.
It is just a shame that basic functions like proper connectivity control just wont cut it. And Google is not doing any good either.
And dont let me get started on the voice recognition issue......
Hardwarewise, the SGS is superior that htc desire.....I wonder how it would perform if running Symbian^3 OS or Meego.....
I get a great sound quality from the stock music player just by mixing the equalizer and using the music clarity effect...just great...better than any other device I tried.
And the OFFLINE Gps experience is just great as well: the combination SGS - Motonav - External Bluetooth gps device is working like a charm.
I wouldn't change my sgs just yet......
yesterday i was swiching sims to determine if is a sim fault and suddenly i have my 3g/h back. happy owner again. i've tried all to do this, from firmware upgrade to servide mode settings..i don't know why but i'm ok again...

Hello,
I know its been a long time since you wrote this thread but I just came by it!
I have the exact same problem with you (I had it since August) even now with the official froyo. I tried factory reset and no new apps (that could cause the problem) but it still disconnects randomly in GSM mode. However, when I have it on auto (gsm and wcdma) I have no issues. I just disconnect data from the power button in froyo. I am wondering if you ever found a solution..
Chryssa
Well, I am subscribed to this topic so I saw your post.
Good and bad news:
First the bad one: No solution yet, it keeps disconnecting IF I stay on "gsm only".
And the good (or a little better) news:
I noticed that on sgs, using "gsm only" or "gsm/wcdma (auto mode) makes no difference on battery consumption....
By the way, this is a Samsung issue, not really an Android one.
On a HTC Desire HD, you can use "gsm only" mode with no problems...
Thank you for your answer!
I noticed that about the battery too. So not too bad, I just have to keep it on auto mode then..
Same issue
Im having the same issue but in a optimus t the worst part is that i cant get service at all.. when i press change network preferred it wont change and when i try to press on turn on radio it wont work either....
Hi all,
I flashed my phone, and thought I’d go with Darky's Raw Steel Edition (4.1), which is awesome btw. I installed it correctly, installing I9000XWJM8 first (the MODEM and PDA, not CSC as none seemed to come in the package).
Everything was working smoothly until I realise 3G/Data Network is no longer working (it did previously). Not only that but it seems it won’t connect to my service provider (Three) at all (emergency calls only), and I’ve also now noticed GPS doesn’t seem to work at all, I can’t even get into GPS test mode. Wireless does however work though it being off, or on, has no impact.
I’ve tried:
Flashing different firmware - Stock JM8 and Doc Froyo’s latest JPO.
Hard Reset
Deleting and re-entering APN settings, though they were correct and already on the phone anyway.
Testing my SIM on another phone – signal is strong, inc. 3G on that.
I’m really at a loss here. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
UPDATE: So, I won't bump this myself, but incase anyone finds this thread in the future: the gprs, gps, 3g, etc all work - just not in my house, on the SGS, anymore. I have no idea why - my other phone, it's fine.. and it used to be fine with this phone too. I'll update again if I figure it out.
the other phone works fine with the same sim you are using in the SGS?
Yep, the same SIM works in my old Nokia 6600 fold, people in my house also with Three are getting solid reception right now. 4-5 bars with 3g established.
It worked beautifully all the way home from work on the bus, just not in/around my house.
It's as if the local cell towers near my house have blocked my SGS specifically (can't receive calls or texts either). I did turn the wireless on and off in short succession (which would cause the gprs/3g to try to re-establish each time).. maybe I flooded them and they blocked my IMEI? Or is that just a ridiculous idea?
The real odd thing is GPS not working either (again, just around my house/street); surely it doesn't need a cell site for that?
It does seem as if I can't download apps from The Market anymore either, and have tried various cache clearing solutions to fix it (problem occurred roughly when I noticed my reception was nill).
You might have a problem with the band selection thing of your phone.. have you tried downloading/speed test when you /do/ get a connection? If it seems capped at 40kbps, you might have the same problem I experienced before, of being stuck on 2g. (Despite settings saying otherwise).
I fixed it by doing the solution to having a missing 850 band, the thread of which is found somewhere in this forum.
Thanks. That sort of worked earlier.
It made a slow data connection, and some texts came through.
I then went out to a location a few miles away, had a look and it was still on a slow connection type for a few mins, then all of a sudden it went to HSPDA (with the occasional 3G flicker) and was blistering fast.
Now that I'm back home, I've lost all reception again and can't make/take calls
[EDIT] Clicking around my phone in the hopes of finding something: checked product code in my nv_data.bin file with SGS Toolbox, and it's showing I9000HKDKOR; whilst the backup is showing I9000HKDH3G - could I be on to something? I backed up my efs folder after rooting before doing anything else - so, going to try restoring that.
I have a hunch based on a 2 year old post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=445913).
From what I understand, Three UK piggy back on Orange's network when Three's 3G cell towers are out of reach. Orange don't provide Three users with the full service though, just 2G and I'm guessing they prioritise Orange customer traffic.
I think when I flashed my phone, I removed code commanding the phone to prefer Three cell towers. Without that code, the phone simply goes to the strongest/first signal it detects. I'm guessing in the area near where I live, it's Orange (or maybe any old network which is why I'm often getting Emergency Calls only).
This is all guesswork. I'm hopeful, seeing as if I quickly switch the SIM to my two+ year old phone, then I quickly get 5 bars and 3G.. unless the SGS's signal issues really are *that* bad.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831022
Try see if you have the symptom of a missing band?
Hi Nwsk, I tried that before and assumed it didn't work, but actually the change isn't sticking. Which seems to be the case for a couple of others! Thanks for pointing me back to it!
[Edit]
Ohhhh dear. Now I have another theory (I really hope I'm wrong).
I've just read on a thread that some phones don't have the 850 Band, it's down to a lack of hardware support. I'd wager every Three UK branded phone sold will have the correct hardware as stock. I sent my phone back to Samsung for repair, they said they replaced the motherboard.. inference: they replaced it with one without the WCDMA 850 support.
Hmm, I'm definitely no authority on this, since I'm just guessing.. but I figure if that if was a true hardware defect, you wouldn't even be able to get it temporarily?
Are you using any 'battery-saving' type apps? Something might be messing up and keep reverting the settings. I had this occur to me a second time when I was trying out the superpower app here, I think it conflicted with another app I was using, and it borked out my network connectivity. Somehow fixed that after a few reboots, and lots of messing around in the phone debug menu with the 3g/2g thing, it suddenly worked again.
I've not seen it manage to get onto 850MHz WCDMA in my house for a while, not since the mobo got replaced (I should qualify that with a statement on my bad memory ). It will occasionally latch onto something if I walk around the house, giving me a slow data connection with the G symbol showing - it will drop pretty quickly.
Messing around while I write this, I've just realised if I set my phone to GSM(2G) with roaming [Three UK phones need this on so they can connect to Orange towers], then it does establish a data connection at 1800mhz. If I force WCDMA only, I get NOTHING. Setting both/auto leads to it being dodgy/instable, as I've discribed above.
My Nokia 6600 supports 850mhz UMTS, which would explain why it's working well inside my house.
I don't think it's an app. I've flashed a few different firmwares in an effort to get this fixed, it's currently on official Froyo JPO (not even rooted!) with Multi-CSC and a few completely harmless apps. I'd try the stock Three firmware if it was available somewhere.
I'm hoping it's software like you suggest! I will tinker away for now!
Thanks for all the help, at least now I'm fairly sure I'm on the right track!
Right, a little back story.
I brought my SGS2 at the start of May in the UK on O2 so I have an early model which came with the firmware before KE1. I rooted in the first week and was flashing Villainrom 1.0 before too long with no data problems.
I think it was around KE2 with Lite'ning rom that I first saw my phone constantly switching between H & 3G and stalling when receiving or sending data. This behaviour has continued through all the firmwares I've tried with many different modems. I moved onto to Cognition when it was v1.01 and have been using it all the way unto 1.2 with the KG3 modem. Again still with data connecting problems.
Things I have tried -
Turning off fast dormacy
Editing the build.prop http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097612&highlight=build.prop pages 1-5
Switching off HSDPA/HSUPA via the *#301279# command
Disabling juice defender
Switching to WCDMA only
Changing modems
Full hard reset and reflasing of roms
Even with the above on multiple roms and rom versions my data connection was unreliable at best and killing spree warranting at its worst.
Possible fix-
What i found lurking on XDA on a slow day at work was the command below
*#2263#
This allows you to select which bands your phone uses. I selected option 2 then tested the 4 available bands. They all resulted in a complete loss of reception except WCDMA 2100. this is probably network specific you'll need to try it yourselves.
The results and current settings
Now when I try to use my data connection the phone no longer switches between H & 3G. It will start on 3G then find H and stay there, I see a slight delay if its been in deep sleep or JD has cut the connect but this is normal for the phone to start on 3G to save power.
Fast dormacy - off
build.prop -stock/unedited (I found this worked for me for a while but since 2.3.4 it didnt seem to help)
HSDPA/HSUPA via the *#301279# command - both on
Juice defender - on
WCDMA only selected as when picking a band it doesn't seem to like having a GSM band selected as well (happy to be corrected on that)
Modem KG3 -
Rom cog 1.2 - I'm patiently waiting 1.4 based on KG6 to test my findings.
Conclusion-
Okay it could be that selecting a band does F'all and that I'm seeing better results for a completely different reason. I'm not a developer so my fixing skills amount to playing with stuff I don't fully understand and seeing how more or less broke I've made it.
After thought -
Ive seen on the sensation forum they have discussed the wrong IMEI code being the cause of poor data speeds so I may look into that next.
Please share your experiences and anything else you've tried.
Ive seen on the sensation forum they have discussed the wrong IMEI code being the cause of poor data speeds so I may look into that next.
That should be no connection as IMEI belongs to phone and handshakes with network first .
KG6 modem some report as better .
jje
I will have to give this a try and see how it works, thanks for the share.
I am in the same boat, it is VERY frustrating to say the least. A typical scenario for me is: reading a web page on my S2 for a good few minutes (3g has gone to sleep mode by the time I have finished reading), I click on a link, 3g flashes, H comes up and flashes once.....wait.....wait.......wait......10 seconds later it decides to initiate a connection and take me where I want to go! It does the same thing with the XDA app. I have been onto O2 about this a couple of weeks ago, all they did was give me the settings over the phone (which were the exact same ones I already had) and they also sent me a replacement sim card, suffice to say, there is no change. Now I am convinced its a network problem of some sort, I have a three sim card which I have been trying out and the above problems do not exist anymore when using three, I click a link after 3g has gone to sleep and it goes from 3g to H and initialises the data transfer in one smooth motion. It looks like I'll be getting my PAC code and moving to Three!
would be interested to hear if switching to the 2100 band helps at all seeing as your on O2 as well
Mine is O2 via Giffgaff and no problems at all .
Tested KG6 modem Wi|Fi only and it is a stronger signal .
jje
Yeah, forgot to mention that, I have just enabled it. I can't test at the moment though coz there is no 3G coverage where I am. The only problem with enabling it is you will not be able to connect to GPRS or Edge if you need to. But it is worth testing regardless.
Just been out and about and tried that setting, didn't make much difference unfortunately
Maybe it was a combination of tweaks on my end. What rom & modem are you using?

Villain 2.3 with KG3 modem. The problem has been the same whatever ROM I have used, I even flashed back to O2 stock a couple of weeks ago to see if it was a ROM problem, but that was the same. I can't remember what it was like when I first got the handset though, mine was the first batch as well.

The wife is on Giffgaff so I think I'll give that sim a try before I get my PAC off O2.

Right, a little back story.
What i found lurking on XDA on a slow day at work was the command below
*#2263#
This allows you to select which bands your phone uses. I selected option 2 then tested the 4 available bands. They all resulted in a complete loss of reception except WCDMA 2100. this is probably network specific you'll need to try it yourselves.

hi
i am just testing now this fix. i have an o2 phone and i did the same changes you did, disable fast dormancy, changed build.prop settings, will let you know after going a few times underground ;-)
gabrio
confirm, this is working, even when i go underground or when the signal goes away, it gets back to H/H+ and works, gabrio
Give it a little while, I think you'll be back saying it didn't work
Personally, I went ahead with my threat and moved over to 3uk, never looked back since with this problem, been perfect!
I've tried it all. Disabled fast dormancy, hspa, toyed with band selection, edited build.prop (btw, don't bother with it, the network settings you find on the web to type in don't work on the s2) you name it - but it would still cut out. Luckily, my phone is unlocked so I switched my provider and now it works like a charm with all the bells and whistles enabled. I can ride the tram all across warsaw and maybe have a handful of 2-3 second hiccups when I'm listening to online radio. Curiously enough, on my previous provider I've noted that there are some areas (like a busy mall - Arkadia) where it would not stall as well as a few other places, and most other areas that were notorious with data hanging. I'm convinced now that it is an issue on the telco side (*cough*Orange*cough*), and too bad because I was on a prepaid plan with them that for roughly $30 I had 7GB of transfer. I guess they figured they can promise the world on their trash network, because nobody would actually use it up. YMMV.
Had this issue with a UK GS2 purchased from Negri using it on AT&T.
Since upgrading to the latest UK firmware with 2.3.4 I have not had the issue going on about 2 weeks now!
Man was that issue annoying. Had to restart the phone sometimes to get data back.
Joe
Ok I did that too though how abt lag? Phone lags a bit opening large sms conversations and browsing home screens.. But peace. Yours too?

Hi,
I have a weird problem with my S4.
At work I have some areas with really bad coverage so sometimes the phone can stay for a few minutes (or even say 1h) out of service.
This is all normal. The coverage sucks, the building is weird, not problem here.
The problem is that when I go outside where the signal is normally full it does not register back to the network.
Even more it does not even go to "emergency only mode". On a few occasions I arrived back home (10Km + drive) until I realized people can't call me because the phone is out of service.
What is even weirder is the fact that on some occasions, even though the (no service) (/) sign is displayed mobile data works just fine.
My previous iPhone did something similar too - it took a while for it to recover signal after exiting the coverage black spots but never more than maximum 5 minutes.
To me it looks like a radio modem issue and maybe this is aggravated by the fact that my carrier uses the same 2100MHz frequency for both Data and Voice.
I would like to know if any of you have experience anything like this or if there is some app available that can monitor what's happening.
what network and firmware you on and wich s4 variant:thumbup:

It's Europe standard i9505.
Network is Digi.Mobil Romania - but I doubt it's relevant since it can't get even emergency only (other networks).
so... any idea?
Android needs to work on it's notification. No Service and the reception bars only gauge voice coverage. You can test this out by using Service Mode to do a PS Only (data) attach instead of the standard PS + CS (voice) attach. It'll say no service, but data will be fine.
Emergency only, is when there is coverage from other operators but not yours. No service, means your way off the grid.
I've noticed the issue you describe and it's only on some firmwares. Try a newer one and see if you still have the same issue. But you might notice a drop in your battery life because your phone will be scanning all the time. If you're happy with no coverage at work, best to just turn it off and then turn it on when your outside.
Best option is to tell your operator about the lack of coverage. There's someone in charge of stats who get's beaten every time you drop a call. You'll get extra attention if you've got other businesses around you, so let them know that too.
Thanks for the reply.
I am already on the latest firmware and I noticed the same behavior on the firmware before this one.
Unfortunately I can't try out other modem versions (from other FW packages) as that would void my warranty.

but...what about reboot phone? i know isnt funny but until u find a problem u can just reboot ur phone while u are going out from ur office...or just try to enable and disable airplane mode
Of course reboot works but I am looking for a solution, not a partial workaround.
The most annoying problem is that if I forget to reboot it when I leave work it will not recover network connectivity even if I am in areas with very good coverage, areas where you would expect your phone to work.
It looks like when it decides to give up it does not try again. It is very weird that it also drops the signal from other networks (the "emergency only") even if it's well in their coverage areas. I guess I will have to switch phones... Even if this issue was present for the iPhone too it never took more than a few minutes for it to recover on its own. And I'm not an apple fan
Just to do some brain ecercise...do u keep in power save when u are out of signal ? Its possible that disable check after few tries

It's not in power save. I only use that function in case of battery emergency.
Same problem here
Hello, I have the EXACT same problem here. I am in Argentina.
Now, I've been in the USA for a few weeks, visiting, and while my phone was roaming, I didn't have a single problem with my phone.
Since I came back, 3 days ago, I haven't had any problems in Argentina, either.
Is it possible that something got activated when the phone was registered to another company? (it was AT&T i believe)
If that's the case... maybe you can try putting a sim card of another company and see if you still have the problem?
Please let me know if you still have the same problem or if you got it solved. I would love to know something more scientific about all this.
I don't know if this is relevant, but my compass is off by about 30 degrees. Maybe my phone is defective?
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME WITH THIS

Hi I have similar issue,
My phone says its out of service or no signal or no network also I checked my sim card in other phone in the same place and it is fine. The i9505 model in ireland meteor provider was running ok until deicided to give a try to another network operator, when I changed the sim card it didnt only catch up the signal from new network provider but also it refuses to catch the old network provider. Funny thing is that I am receiving 3G but no signal bars and no service sign is beeing displayed. I am running latest official BTU (UK) firmware, the phone was never rooted, altough I had to remove the simlock and instal unbranded firmware. The phone worked fine with the newest updates for a month and now I am facing this trouble.
No factory resets nor installing same radio (couple of times) have helped. Also I used odin to instal same firmware (as it has locked bootloader) so I cannot revert back to other stock firmwares, but still no joy.
hope that someone faced the same problems and describe how to solve this issue. thanks
