Should I buy this phone?

Was wondering what's the track record of Samsung getting custom Roms/firmware?
I really like how XDA have developers to do custom ROMS for HTC phones but was wondering does Samsung phones gets same treatment? Or will be looking at far and few in between updates from Samsung itself and won't be able to update to the latest and greatest?
Really want Nexus One but the Galaxy S is sooooooooo much better *sigh*

Can't answer your question on whether the Samsung will get the same amount of Dev time that has been lavished on the HTC phones, but I was in the same situation as yourself - Galaxy S or Nexus One.
I came down on the side of the Galaxy S simply because it's a better phone all round. There's a multi-touch vid on youtube comparing the responsiveness of the screens, and the Galaxy wiped the floor with the Nexus One. I'm hoping that the popularity of this phone will mean that the Devs on here will start giving some time to the Galaxy S.
I must admit I was initially drawn towards the Nexus One because of excellent work that has been done by the likes of Cyanogen et al, but I took the long term view that surely the same must eventually happen with the Galaxy S. *crosses fingers*

For the Galaxy, there is MoDaCo. For the Galaxy Spica, there is Samdroid. Don't know much about the others, but they weren't released here in Europe anyway.
I followed Samdroid a while, thinking about getting a Spica. There are some awesome things going on there - they even tried to modify the touchscreen sensor, because the hardware does support multitouch, but the driver doesn't. AFAIK, they had no success, but still nice try. And they even opened a board for the Galaxy S, maybe Leshak fetches one and works some magic there in the future. If not, I am pretty sure somebody will.

If you want to customize it to run the latest roms, the question is: how "open" is this device?
I know that HTC made the Desire a pain in the butt to unlock/root, and they will improve this with every new phone the make, making them more and more secure and block customized images.
Is Samsung going to follow the same strategy?

I think you're right Magicdroid, the question would be how open this is. But even though the Desire was a pain to root, it HAD been rooted just cos there's lots of developers. When there are lots of developers, you'll get rooted device
I wonder if the Galaxy S will get lots of user base.............I just hope lots and lots of ppl will pick it up and then the chance of longetivity with custom ROMS dramatically increases....

I'm hopoing for good community support as well. I have an AT&T Tilt, and have doen well on the XDA site. I'm spoiled
I am very interested in the Galaxy S, but I"m on At&T, and the AT&T version i keep reading about doesn't have the same specs. So having to wait and see on that.
Also, I see a lot of negative feedback on Samsung support, and based on their previous Android phone (Behold I think it's called) is not getting an upgrade. Lots of complaints about being abandonded by Samsung.
Not sure what I'll do. If At&T doesn't get decent phones soon, I mahy have to look do Verizon.

The Galaxy S looks like a great piece of hardware.

I was considering to buy a Nexus, but now I changed my mind...someday this mobile will hopefully get root and give enough space for customizations of every kind...just wait and see - it will come in the mid of June to Europe and I'm eager to hold one in my hands

I'm disciplining myself to not get this phone until there's a good team of developers move to it to get customizations going

I recommend phones to my friends and have told many to hold on to their money till the release of Galaxy S.
My question to you is, will you recommend this phone to those who need a smartphone? heard that there few tiny issues here and there and do they play big part in purchase decision.

I would recommend this phone 100% to some one who live outside USA/Australia/Canada.
For other I would recommend Samsung Galaxy PRO. (epic 4g)

Yes indeed best android phone out in the market.

Galaxy is ideed a great phone and indeed threre are some issus (as with each phone now in the market). I have a Desire (also a very good quality, but app memory is tooooo small). Galaxy is much nicer and if you tweak it, much faster and much responciver

I'm normally disappointed with technology once I get it in my hands, but the Galaxy S has continued to impress me, and as a cynical, jaded old man, who works in the technology industry, that's quite hard to do. I recommended it.

No it isn't a bad choice at all but the Sprint version of the Galaxy S has more features.

Best smartphone ive used in a while
I would definately recommend the galaxy to friends, its not without its quirks like the GPS works but seems to be a little jumpy and it doesnt have a flash for some reason. Other than that its the best phone i have ever used, its not perfect but its a huge improvement on my old touch hd. It has one of the best screens on a smartphone ive ever seen, i dont care that the iphone 4 has more ppi - the contrast and brightness of the samsung screen is amazing.
The only thing i am disappointed with is the android market (lack of apps and general quality of apps), but im sure this will improve.
My smartphone history:
HTC Touch - too slow
HTC TYTN II -too chunky
HTC TOUCH HD - bad screen (unresponsive)
SAMSUNG GALAXY S -great (few quirks)

the reasons I want to go with it is because I want to stay with tmobile since it's the cheapest company in plan terms $119 for 2 phones unlimited everything? sprint or verizon can't beat that and because out of all the samsung galaxys is the desing that I like the most I have red here about alot of things don't working but they are software related and I know once dev start making roms for it that will go way, no led flash I don't care about that I don't think that any phone with a 2 little led will make much difference when taking a picture, no led notification I would like to have that but not a deal braker for me. I think devs will pay attention to this phone it have 16gb build in memory so installing new roms even if they are bigger in mb would be more easy than move them to sd cards, the only thing its that I need the phone to tether good since I want to use the phone internet in my Ipad OR notebook.

Android is rather smooth on the HD2; just watch some recent videos on Youtube, but the specs on the Galaxy S, especially the graphics which are significantly better. If you aren't planning on playing many games, go for the HD2. It's builds are mostly smoother than on the Galaxy in my experience. Though a custom rom on the Galaxy S works wonders; I installed a bionix rom on my friends Vibrant. One major plus for the Galaxy S though is the fact that the Nexus S is basically a De-Samsunged Galaxy S device so you will get some great new roms on there soon. Overall, I'd get the Galaxy S if you are only interested in Android and/or want to game; and get the HD2 if you want to have the most hackable phone on the market. If dualbooting doesn't interest you; go for the Galaxy S. One last thing, I was able to get a US T-Mobile HD2 off-contract for $150, while Galaxy S devices are significantly more expensive off-contract. If you're on contract, they're about the same.

As it has been mentioned, if you're interested mainly in android, I'd get the Galaxy S, but if you like to mess around with stuff like roms and such, I'd get HD2.
Hardware wise - Galaxy all the way, though I like the HD2 build quality more mostly due to materials used.

The captivate is a galaxy s... just a locked, branded one. But hardware on all the galaxy s phones are pretty much the same. Like everyone else said, if you just want to run android and not windows mobile, get a galaxy s series phone. My brother just ordered a mesmerize from us cellular... its free right now (after $80 mailin rebate) with a contract, plus they give $100 credit towards his monthly bills... not a bad deal at all!

Galaxy S II or wait for Atrix ?!

As all of you know the Atrix is only available in US & Canada and most of the rumors point to may/june release date .
Today i read at gsmarena that the Galaxy S II will be supporting a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor ! .Then i looked at the specifications and they were pretty much attractive like the 4.3 SAMOLED+ screen , the 32 GB memory and the 8 MP camera !
What really made me go through the phase of confusion is that the Galaxy S II is coming to europe this month or the beginning of may
My question is if you were in my situation what will you choose and does the atrix deserve all the waiting ?

The atrix is good, and has its quirks, but so does every phone. All the problems of the atrix are well-known.
As for the galaxy s2, may I remind you of a little incident with the last generation? Specifically something pertaining to GPS?

I do remember it , actually my sister is suffering from this problem right now along with some other problems like the filing system .
The problem is that i'm waiting for the atrix for a pretty long time and i read a lot of articles about impressions and reviews for the device so you know that a man in my position well have his doubts , especially when i still haven't got a try of the device.

Dude.. I think the Samoled screens are incredible when it comes to color *but the reality is they look all nice just because all the color is oversaturated*.
Resolution will be same old crap, phone will be thin but with a crappy finish.
Now the the real real real thing you must think about... Samsung has crappy quality control. Guaranteed. I urge everyone who reads this to look up i9000m corrupt SD in google and you will find the polls here on XDA on the ridiculousness of the lack of interest from Samsung to do anything and even admit a mistake... and B, their way of addressing this so called "issue" after 7 months post release.
If you want to know the horror stories i had to live with the i9000 and how finally after my 3rd phone died, i simply decided to go out and buy a new one... just ask and I'll tell you more
500 bucks down the drain and eventually, I managed to get it to boot a semi working filesystem. It chewed up one brand new SD card, gg.. and now i gave it to my wife because all it does is look pretty and make calls.. also lets not even mention their horrible commitment to updates and more importantly their crappy choice in filesystems (related specifically to the i9000).
By the way, in case you do not know. The i9000 is the Original Galaxy S..
Yeah, people can ***** about motorola all they want, I'll NEVER be buying samsung again..
PS: Most people say the Nexus S redeemed samsung, but its a pretty known fact, google set the spec sheet and phone workes great because its an i9000 with all the quirks already ironed out and of course running AOSP gingerbread.

I enjoy my atrix very much. Even with the locked bootloader the psuedo roms are working fine until we get that bad boy decrypted!

it really depends if the galaxy s2 will have the same problems as the original. the two main problems i had with the phone that made me sold it was the gps never working right and not very accurate when it does. The other is reception/deathgrip i mostly use my phone in a low reception area, 2-3 bars at best, and every time i pick it up it would always drop down to 1 bar or edge and would constantly drop calls. I couldn;t make a call longer than 5 mins before it would be dropped if im in a low reception area.
all the problems with teh atrix is pretty minor compared to these imo. if samsung fixed these problems and super amoled plus screen is as good and some are saying then i will consider it, it was nice to have all those roms and mods(assuming the bootloader can be cracked)
im also skeptical on the build quality. all teh galaxy s phones felt pretty cheap with teh captivate being the best of the worst...

I suggest you Galaxy S2 while Atrix is now a troubles maker by many issues.

My Atrix is being returned to AT&T in about 10 days. I'm hoping to get a SGSII.

If I was in your position, I would wait till I could play with both of them. Because I like to do a lot of web browsing and text related stuff, I almost always choose the phone that has the higher pixel density and/or higher resolution. It just makes reading small text so much more pleasant.
I guess this only matters to people with sharp eyes, who like reading small text though.

Stay away from samsung android phones. Samsung can help very screw up the os. I had a galaxy s and bought an atrix out of pocket, best thing i ever did.
Samsung lured to us about when they would update to 2.2 for 6 months. And their android ui is very ham fisted. Don't go samsung.

Does the Galaxy S ll have a Nvidia Tegra dualcore processor? No. LOL. But Cyanogenmod would be really nice to have. And I know it will get it. Oh well.

This post is an example of a fail Chinese to English translation.

It won't be long after release for us to know whether GPS works well on the SGS2 or not, and whether the phone has any other quirks. Things like this, such as Atrix touch and other issues only take days to come to light on XDA. (The touch issue would really piss me off, I hope they fix that for Atrix owners soon, too bad Bell will delay any fix for months like they do any update).
I'm satisfied with resolution of the i9000m SD defect in my case. They repaired it, it works now end of story. I have doubts about how you managed to kill 3 i9000's that don't even really have reported hardware issues...(or did you you say the $500 was down the drain but you managed to get it working again?) With an unlocked bootloader comes great responsibility.
The major upgrade with samoled+ on SGSII is that it is RGB, no longer pentile. Hardly 'same old resolution' when it will now have double the Red/Blue subpixels with full 800x480. Compared to qHD RGBW pentile it will have ~10% more total subpixels and 48% more R/G/B subpixels (since it only has 480x270).
The thing that will keep my away from pentile in the future is how crappy solid primary or almost-primary colours (just R/B in SGS case) look with effectively half the resolution.

If the Galaxy S II comes to AT&T then why the hell would you get the Atrix??? lol
well unless you don't want to wait.

I wanted a SGS II, but couldn't wait so I bought the Atrix.. I like the fingerprint scanner, plus when a dual core optimized update drops it shouldn't really matter too much... IMHO...

I want to thank all of you guys for telling me about your opinions .
I guess i'll follow the GS2 forum to see if the GS2 have technical flaws like GS did .
The more the technical flaws decreases the more the possibility of me buying it increases .

The GS2 will come in 2 versions . One with Nvidia processor and the other with Exynose processor .

My Review-
I have seen many people try to claim that Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Y and other in this range are better than this phone. Well, I don't really agree with this. Yes, they are officially Gingerbread supported phones and have a good Graphic Driver but it lacks something which is more important. Development! Yes, We don't have huge development for these phones. Some don't have their own forum either. Heck, even Ace doesn't have it's forum on main page. The development for this phone is huge, great and consist of very helpful users. You can't have luxury of using various Custom ROM's, tweaks, Themes, Kernel and every other development you will see in other High range phones. Before going to start discussion than this phone doesn't have Gingerbread or a good Graphic driver. Hold on, and look on development forum.
The developers here are very best and experienced in almost every field. We have ported CM7 ROM, OpenFIMG Driver and custom ROM's which makes the phone fast and fills every field which which it lacked before. Tools like Chainfire, modified flash player makes this phone more than worth at this cost and even comparable to some Higher range phones. Thanks to our developers, I am happy that I have this phone. If you are looking for high development but want a cheap phone than this is for you. If you want to keep it all stock, then you can go for any other like Galaxy Fit.

Galaxy 3 is of of course better then galaxy y
But we can't say for galaxy fit for now...
It may get own devs by time...

And I think, g3 and apollo is not available as a new piece, people who want to take a new phone, should buy a new phone...
News is Galaxy y will get his siblings that may have front camera with low price...

Our phone is best by our side...
Newer phones may get their devs slowly...
People who want to buy a new phone should buy a high range of phone which ever suits their budget...
If phone is of too low range, may not give a good android experience...
Finally, samsung always gives a **** plastic feel in all range of phones

Giving a review about this phone is hopeless because its dead. I mean you can't find it in the market. Phone like fit and pop are good but our cells beats them in dev. In spec they beat us cause we don't have a good gpu. If we had that we could kick the a$$ easily. If you are looking for a midrange Samsung, go for ace or spend some more and get a galaxy s.

G3 Good as a Mid-Range Android
G3 is really good.
This is my First Android Phone and really happy with it.

i went in the shop looking for an entry android phone and bought my g3 because they had mispriced it at £14.00 instead of £140.00. i bought three and gave one to my bro and one to my mum. I walked out of the shop feeling pretty pleased with my bargain phone and it hasn't stopped impressing me since.
Ive played with the galaxy y and other lower end samsung models and they dont seem to have the same heart as the G3. sure its a bit plastic and the screen is small and when its laid flat it cant decide if its in portrait or landscape mode, but it has something unique, an Xfactor... you. All of you! from the skilled devs to the noobs like me, this phone is loved and cherished and is being pushed well beyond its means by this community.
i know one day i will have to get a new phone (probably when i hardbrick this one!) but i doubt il ever love another handset in the same way, if i could hit all of your thanks buttons at once i would because its this community that drives my love of our humble, glitchy galaxy 3
