Not receiving incoming calls when 2G/3G etc connected - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

The other day one of my friends told me that when he rings my phone lately (since I've started using Android) it always diverts to my voicemail. I did a bit of testing, and figured out that is seems to be happening when 2G/3G data connection is active. Has anyone else had this problem, and can a few people test this out?
I've tested this with 2 radios:
Leo_RADIO_2.12.50.02_2
Leo_RADIO_2.07.51.22_2
and 2 android builds:
30.08.2010¦ ?shubCRAFT 1.5?CM6 Final?¦ ?Kernel: ElBartoME 2.6.32.9 #1? ¦
New Nexus One Android 2.2 Build FRG33 [ mccm v1](5.9.2010)
I have tested on WM and this problem isn't happening there. I am on O2 UK Post Pay.

I have this problem and it happens when my phone is sending/receiving data, not when the data connection is idle. It happens on WM, Android, and on my iPhone too. My provider says this is normal and nothing can be done.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

Switching from 2.12 radio to 2.10 in my sig helped this a lot.
Sent from my HD2 mattc froyosense using XDA App

I gave 2.10 a go, but it seemed to make little difference for me.

I had the same problem with the 2.12 radio. I wouldn't get any calls from sprint users.

This is normal with GPRS aka 2G. It's like you go online with a modem and a phone line in the old days (dial-up). Even when you are trying to send a txt, and a call come in at the same time, the text sending will fail. This is very annoying.
not sure about 3G tho, some say that the 3G can handle data and calls at the same time.

I get this too, Plus when i recieve a call i cannot hear the caller for 10 seconds or so ? but the caller can hear me straight away ?
I did post this in the HD2 general thread but got no responce...
Have changed sim card as i was told this could be the issue but no luck also tried various radios/Builds inc android again with no luck..
Looks like were gonna have to live with it

GPRS/Edge does not necessarily allow simultaneous voice
Well I had no idea. I thought that one of the main advantages of GRPS/Edge was simultaneous voice and data, but I guess not. Apparently it is dependent one the cellular network configuration/capacity.
Here's an MSDN article related to it (not that I consider MS a reliable source of anything, but worth a read )
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb416348.aspx

I had this exact problem. For me it started after using android on my HD2 then whenever i had my phone on UMTS i could call it with another phone and 4 times oout of 5 i would ring all the way to voicemail and never notify me. I first thought it was ATT but i tested my sibling's phone and it was fine, i even switched SIM cards. the problem seems to have gone away with my HD2 after two weeks however I ended up ordering a telus desire with ATT bands. Although now my HD2 reboots in android randomly whenever using UMTS data.

This is what I get as well, except the caller doesn’t hear me for 5 secs or so. I end having to say “hello” 3 times before they can actually hear anything and by that time they usually hang up. I’ve had this problem with WinMo as well, using Telstra on Rogers. It’s kind of annoying since I end up having to use daytime minutes to call them right back.
I found that some x.51.xx radios helped but Android as far as I know is only compatible with x.50.xx radios. So hopefully a new radio will help with this though I’m not really counting on it.

I thought I was going mad
I have the same problem but only just found out. I use my Google navigation a lot, but just discovered when I do that incoming calls are routed to voicemail. I have tried 3 different Radio's from the recommended Leo_RADIO_2.15.50.14 down to 12 and even 08 nothing seems to work.
I have also tried different ROM's from HD Desire to Gingerbread, again no difference.
Not sure if the problem existed on the SD ROM's but it is sertantly an issue on the NAND ROM's.
I am using RMNET as this is the only one that seems stable on O2 in the UK.
This problem is driving me crazy.
Someone else please HELP!!!!

HELP! TyTN Can't Receive Phone Calls! Only SMS!

ROM version: 1.18.255.3
ROM date: 05/30/06
Radio version: 1.03.03.10
Protocol version: 32.34.7010.01H
ExtROM version: 1.18.255.105
For the last few days, calls have not been able to come through to my TyTN. When people call my phone, there is just a message from the phone company (Telstra in this case) saying that the person has their phone switched off and a courtesy text message will be sent to tell them that they missed the call.
That text message is what I get. So I can call my phone from another number, get told it's off, then a few seconds later the message comes through to the phone!
A soft reset allows incoming calls again but this is ridiculous and SOMETIMES not doing anything works, I just have to wait and the next person who calls can sometimes get through!. Anyone have any ideas?
Network selection is Manual with Telstra selected. Network type is GSM and GSM/UMTS band is set to Auto (it was on GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100) but I changed it to Auto hoping it would help the problem.
Thanks!
Have you tried your sim card in an alternative phone, just to make sure it isn't a network problem?
Also, are you in a weak 3G signal area, if yes, perhaps this is happening because it is losing 3G and switching between the two types of signals. You could try selecting just GSM without UMTS (if that is an option in the settings) and see if that fixes it.
Strange, last week my issue was quite the opposite.
For some reason my "Messaging" went missing. The button configuration was still there, just no receiving of SMS and clicking on Messaging did not do anything. It was if the whole thing was uninstalled.
(I didn't play with any registry or Ext_Rom settings at the time).
A hard reset obviously fixed this.
But my situation is obviously different to yours.
I'm on Optus and am having no coverage/ or BAIC issues yet.
Well, changing the network and band to Auto seems to have fixed it so far...
I don't believe it's a phone related problem... I had similar issues with my Vodafone (UK) mobile the other week... Problem just sorted itself out after a couple of days.
Check you don't have voice diverts active. What doe the distant party caller get when they try to ring you?
Gavin.

Hahahaha yeah, I just realised after I posted. I'm a newbie and I just had the same problem the day before so you'll have to forgive me! Just trying to be helpful... Thanks
That's what used to happen on Telstra before they updated their network to support concurrent data and calling on NextG. Are you still using the first official Telstra ROM? Because if you are, and you are inadvertently creating a data connection then you will just receive the missed call SMS notification and no actual incoming call. I'd suggest at least the official ROM update first, and if you don't mind voiding your warranty, then go for one of the nice cooked ROMs on here
Hope it helps

Problem: Calls are at random forwarded to voicemail!!

Hi Guys,
Since a week or so calls are at random directly forwarded to my voicemail.
I have checked my "call forwarding" settings and they are normal:
Forwarding is enabled if I don`t answer after 25 sec, when I`m unavailable and when I`m busy. After a couple of hours I recieve a sms that I have messages waiting in my voicemail. This happens totally at random because a couple of hours later the same people can reach me without any problems
I am assuming that my phone sometimes loses connection to the T-mobile network and so I am unavailable and the call is forwarded to my voicemail. The reason why I assume this is because don`t see a missed call on my phone. I have never had problems with dropped connections nor noticed that I connection is lost. .
Only thing that I recently changed was upgrading my rom to Molski.Biz Rom (RUU_Molski.Biz_226102_22610105_022511_WWE ) on 2 october but I only noticed the problems about a week, so I don`t know if it can be related. I also upgraded to the 2.47.11 radio ROM to see if it would help but without difference so I reverted back tot the 2.25.11 radio ROM
I called T-mobile and they told me it must be related to the phone and couldn`t be a problem with different carriers nor the T-mobile network.
Has anyone have had these problems? or knows a sollution to this?
Greetings,
Averixcool
Edit: running software: Agenda Fusion, Photo contacts and handyswitcher and I don`t have GPRS programs running.
I guess you are losing the connection. You should look for some sort of a pattern? What seems to be random may not be random at all.
Also... You still get SMS for voicemail notification? That's some deja vu...
What software do you have installed that might go out to the internet from time to time? Do you have an email account setup where it will check every 15 minutes?

I don`t have any software that is using the internet on my phone! So that can`t be the problem.
I haven't noticed any pattern in the forwarding or losing my connection. It is happening on different times of the day. It always happens in standby modus of the phone but I do recieve the SMS for voicemail notification but sometimes 3 hours later, so it could be that the connection was lost during 3 hours?
I think i have the same problem. It happens not very often (i think) but its very annoying.
I also found out that my problem is only related to inbound calls.
Cos I was able to place an outbound call with my wizard but i couldnt call it using another phone. It just switches immediatly to voicemail and indeed after a few hours the inbound connection comes back up again and the voicemail-notices start coming in.
I've had numerous calls with the T-mobile helpdesk about this and they also said it was probably phone-related.
Not looking forward to send it off and live without my baby for a cple of weeks
Oh by the way I have rom:2.26.10.2 WWE
I also noticed today that`s only inbound! Today a buddy of mine was calling me while in front of the door. So we tested it right away. He called me again and I also called with my home phone to my mobile and both times directly the voicemail.
Strange thing was that the whole time I had connection with the T-Mobile network with 4 stripes network strength, so the connection wasn`t lost but I was unreachable. At the same I could place a outbound call without any problems.
Is this still phone related?
Full strength connection with T-Mobile network and only inbound calls blocked, outbound no problemo. I don`t get it anymore!
maybe try a different radio and see if that helps the problem.

The threadstarter allready tried another radio, i don't know if there is newer one. I would gladly give it a try.
My wild stab in the dark would be that something goes wrong when moving to another gsm-antenna (location)
Somehow the phone is not reporting as available or something.(i have no clue about gsm technology so never mind )
Heej there,
got exactly the same thing over here since I've upgraded to Molski's Rom 2261002nld. Also updated to radio 24711 but it didnt change.
I'm now flashing it back to tmob 2210205 to see if it's ok now....
I'll keep you informed...

Is this just a Dutch problem? I'm thinking it is more of a network problem despite what T-mobile.NL are saying.
Does the problem occur at peak times?
I have a similar problem. I was getting Voicemail notifications without the phone even ringing. Then i ran into someone and they said they called several times and i never answered. So I called my own phone and takes my phone 4 or 5 beeps for it to ring.
I'm on shogun and faria's cingular 2.26rom i also have photo contacts on.
Problem Solved
I had the same problem (also with T-Mobile Dutch by the way) with the 2.26 rom until I downgraded my radio rom to 02.07.10. All is fine now.
I also have the same problem. Using 2.26 dutch rom
same problem
I have the same problem after installing the new Molski 2.26.10.2 AKU2.3 Rom.
I have the same problem
t-mo 2.26 WWE
Same problem here only with Jester rom Aku 2.3 and T-mobile dutch
Well, I still have the problem about every other day.
And yes. I'm in the Netherlands.
I'm considering returnung it to t-mobile because i cannot trust my phone anymore. It sucks
Hello,
As far as I know (and our Orange's contact has confirmed us this issue), active GPRS data connections make incoming voicecalls to be redirected to voicemail. This doesn't happen if your device is GPRS-attached to the network but not trasmitting/receiving any data at the moment the call is produced.
This effect has become more noticeable since new devices implement DirectPush, so they are permanently updating info from the exchange server.
I'm sorry, the only solution I know for this is to use a 3G/UMTS device, which enables true simultaneous voice and data connections.

Got the same problem. It seems only to occur on the T-mobile Dutch network. I'm running Molski's rom and tried both 2.25.11 and 2.47.11. I don't think it's a gprs issue, because there was no gprs connection when it happened. Also no active programs that use gprs.
Didn't have the problem at all with the latest dutch T-mobile rom.
I just flashed my radio rom back to 2.19.11 from the original rom. I hope it will solve the issue.
Rectification
Hello. I asked again my Orange's contact person and it seems that what I said wasn't very precise in the sense that voicecall redirections occur only under specific circumstances like channel congestion on the network's cell. Normally voice has priority over GPRS and it can 'steal' radio channels from active data sessions so the bandwidth is reduced. But it shouldn't allow to steal the last channel if it was busy. Maybe in this case an incoming call could be redirected to voicemail.
Of course, a problem with a specific rom version and its radio interface could be a problem. I'm sorry if my contribution should blurr your insight into the problem.
I will ask network engineers to learn more details about this issue.
Bye,

Making calls unreliable on 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) while on AT&T

I was thinking of posting this in the general section but posting it here seemed more appropriate as I think the issue at hand is of a more technical nature. If this is not the case I apologize in advance.
I recently purchased a Black HTC Magic (Rogers branding) for use on the AT&T network here in the states. Since then I have had a very difficult time initiating calls while connected via 3G (UMTS/HSDPA). Even in high or low signal situations.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any consistency to my ability to make a call while on 3G. At times 5/5 calls would be successful and other times 1/5 calls are successful (the latter being true more often than not).
Suspecting there was some issue with my device being on 3G I forced my device to use 2G (EDGE) connections only. At which point my reliability issues go away completely (from what I can tell).
I don't experience any strange issues with using my data connection while on 3G/2G so it seems to be specific to voice.
Another interesting thing to note is while trying to initiate a call with the Google Voice application on 3G, I experience the same call initiation issues as mentioned above. Google Voice works as expected while on 2G.
I experience these issues on the original shipping Roger's ROM, as well as all the other 3rd party ROMS (HoFo, Cyanogen, etc...)
Here is information about my device from fastboot...

Is it possible that my SIM card may be causing issues?
Anyone else with a North American Magic experiencing issues on AT&T? I appreciate any help you guys could provide.
your phone is ok
perhaps you might have heard... iphone great phone...AT&T absolute **** network
with dropped calls, and constant diverts to voice mail. dont sweat it. its AT&T not
your mobile.
I would have to agree that it's probably the network, although I might be wrong. I also have a Rogers Magic running on AT&T in Arizona, and I have this issue as well, but not nearly as frequently as you do. This same problem used to happen from time to time with my HTC Fuze and my BlackBerry Curve.
I've had a variety of different devices on the AT&T network (Northeast/Washington, D.C) and although yes I have experienced AT&T's wonderful network. What I'm experiencing just doesn't seem right. Makes me wonder if it's my SIM or particular build....

MOD EDIT
Moved into general discussion forum as not related to android development
if you are not using a newer sim card i would start by changing that. i was using an older 3g sim which i have used with many phones and i found that by changing to a brand new sim the few connectivity issues i had have gone away
which ROM?
Just a question, but which ROM is everyone here using? I, too, experience the random inability to make phone calls over HSDPA. I was told by an at&t rep in-store today that the Rogers Magic does not 'show up' in their system as 3g capable. Pure bs is what I think, but lets rule out software, yes?
If it is not your sim card then it is most likely your network.
Calls over 3G/HSDPA is fine on my Magic and was also fine on my Nokia N79 using the same Cingular SIM card that I have. However, making outgoing Google Voice calls over 3G/HSDPA is a no go.
Yeah...making calls was fine on my Unlocked Touch Diamond, too...but it's NOT on the Magic (32a).
SO...I'd just have to guess that it's *probably* not the SIM card.
I was told (via an exceptionally helpful phone rep) that the "voice 3g" in my area is not very good, but that the "data 3g" is much better. Which (she says) is why I have trouble making phone calls, but that data works fine.
I don't think so...but without *that* answer, I'm left with the AT&T stock "well, we don't support *unlocked* phones, sir, we can't guarantee that they'll work with our network".
ARRRRRGH! REALLY?! SO, phones with the same chipset, using the same technology won't have the same results?
PLEASE, FCC, INVESTIGATE THIS B.S!
Hey radikaled, I have some new developments with GV and outgoing calls. If I set the GV call options to "ask for each call" the issue of calling over 3G appears to be alleviated somewhat. Basically, when initiating a call, you will be prompted on whether you'd like to make the call via GV or not. At this point, wait a few seconds at this prompt and then choose GV. So far the call has successfully connected 100% of the time.
It appears that the data connection is too slow to establish fully over 3G, therefore, the call fails if you don't wait the few seconds before choosing to call via GV.
Let me know if this works for you.
I too had issues with my ROgers Magic unlocked on ATT. When I first got it I used the original ROM and then the HoFo ROM. Both had similar issues with dropping calls when switching from EDGE to 3G and back. I also dropped more calls than normal.
I recently switched to Cyanogens ROM and new radio. I have not had any issues since and then. Calls and switching is very stable. Also the clarity and volume is also much better. Just my experience. Very pleased with this phone on ATT now.

Good read.
Nice post. Interesting topic.
I tried to send several other users your way...I'm sure they eventually checked this out. I've come across this issue with some other folks recently too.
Best of luck though.
Me TOO!
I also have a similar problem. When connected with HSDPA, about one third of the calls I make fail immediately, even with full signal strength. I then wait a few seconds and dial again, and it works. I actually am using the sim card from a previous nokia POS phone I had from two years ago; the ATT people just took it out of the previous crap phone and put it into my poor fuze. How much does a new SIM card cost? Can I get a new SIM card without att bothering me about not having the stock rom? I'm using Da_G's clean fuze 23008 winmo 6.5 with the 1.12.25.19 radio. I live in the Youngstown, Ohio area (between cleveland and pittsburgh), so cell reception on any network is pretty bad, but it seems the ATT/cingular network around here is particularily bad. Any ideas?

Missed calls despite good signal

Hi,
Just got the Galaxy S, im on orange and im finding that the phone is going straight to VM even with full signal, this seems to happen about 80% of the time, i get a message straight after saying i have a missed call. It seems to be worse when its in my pocket, i had a similar issue with my nokia 5800 but not as bad, i just thought it was the phone getting old.
I have a new sim but same number etc.
Anyone else having similar issues?
I had the exact same thing on mt old i8910hd on orange.I put it down to the fact the phone had a few knocks but who knows? Hasnt happened once on galaxy s with vodafone
Also on Vodafone, not encountered this problem yet.
You may have to consider that this is a problem with your provider. In the netherlands, tmobile had an issue with this due to an overloaded network. Since you live in london I guess that would be a likely reason (tmobile mainly had issues in crowded areas). My suggestion is to try and disable your 3G connection and see if that makes a difference. Here people couldn't receive calls when their 3G was on but when they turned it off, the problems seemed to disappear.
If this works for you, you may want to contact your operator. The sounds to me like it isn't a device related issue.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Thanks for the reply, stepping down to 2g did seem to help, i have found some other posts on other forums, one forum suggests that orange are aware of the issue, lets just hope they resolve it soon.
I had this problem with orange at least 8 months or so, so i wouldnt hold your breath

[Q] Problem Receiving calls

Hi all,
I've finally got my hands on the DHD, and after using winmo for the last ~5 years I'm loving it, but I seem to have a problem with receiving calls.
Earlier tonight at work I was using the market place, playing a bit of Angry birds, and I got a couple of texts from T-mobile saying I had missed calls, I also had a few missed the night before aswell while i was playing around with it.
I've asked the people who called and they said the calls go straight to answer phone as if the phone is off/has no signal, but the signal is great both at home and work.
So far I have rooted and S-OFF'd the phone, but have not installed a custom ROM yet. I thought this may be kinda like the Iphone 4 touch of death issues, but cant get it loose signal by covering it with my hands.
Has anyone else had this issue, or does it look like I may have a dodgy handset?

Does your phone have 3G coverage at your workplace or is 3G enabled on your phone? 2G allows only voice OR data at the same time, while 3G allows both. So if you were using data e.g. marketplace, syncing etc., your call might not get through. Might be worth checking your phone settings.

didnt know that, will have to re-enable 3g D:
Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. Thanks for the replies, After being on shift for the last week it seems that my workplace is in a bit of a coverage grey area, so depending where I am stood, strength of the wind or the current celestial alignment, the phone will swap between 3G and HSDPA, so from what I can find it looks like I may of missed these calls due to this issue.
It should not matter if you're swapping from 3G and HSPDA, you should still be receiving calls if you're on 3G. HSPDA is 3G, but faster. It you still miss calls, I'd suggest talking to your provider.
