16Gb Epic SD Card Loaded with 7Gbs of.. What? - Epic 4G General

I just noticed the SD card came preloaded with 7Gbs of stuff inside.. But.. What stuff? I removed everything that I had on the SD and it said it had 7Gb still been used.

I notice that the stock card was only showing half the capacity as well, without any actual files being on it. I would suggest just reformatting the card.
No big deal for me since I'm using a 32GB card but I did notice the size discrepancy.

full 16 gigs here. well, accually 14.7

Same for me. What size is the card showing when you put it in a pc directly?

14.7. And it had around 7.10 used.

The 16GB card shows only 14.7GB because the other 1.3GB is used by the file system/structure when the card is formated. Without the file sytem created on the card, it would be useless as the device would not know where to look for the files you store on the memory card. On a 32GB card the file system created should technicaly be double of the 16GB. My 8GB memory card only shows like 7.4GB after a format if I remember correctly. Hope I answered some questions.

Not really, I think we all know this. I said the memory stick came preloaded with 7Gb of extra stuff.

Mine has over 14GB of free space 16GB card the Epic comes with. Left it as it came in the box and didn't format it. The only things I added to it myself (outside of the stuff the phone's apps adds) were the pictures from my old phone and the rooting/recovery stuff downloaded here.

wait so do you have 7,9 or 14 gigs of space left? Cause i had 14

There's some 14.xGBs of free'd up space on the sd card when you buy it, at least on mine and most people I've talked to, so I don't know what's up with yours coming loaded with 7GBs this mystery data.

I have 14 gigs of free space on my card too.

Mine didn't come with anything preloaded. 14.7GB free from the getgo. Have you tried just formatting it completely?

um... no...
this is caused by manufacturers marketing vs how computers count bytes.
1 kb = 1024 bytes
1 mb = 1024 x 1024 = 1,048,579 bytes
1 gb = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes
manufactures market 1 gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes
it would take 17,179,869,184 bytes to be a full 16gb
manufactures only put 16,000,000,000 bytes on a card
((16,000,000,000 / 1024) / 1024) / 1024 = 14.9011612 gb

I remember reading that the prerelease versions of the Epic (like mine) would have the full version of Asphalt 5, and the versions for the public would have the demo only. I had about 7GB full on my card, figured it was a glitch, and formatted. Now I've finally gotten around to downloading Asphalt and it's the demo. Good thing I hate racing games, but still...

Missing free space in SD card

Guys, please help me out on this weird problem. Check on the pics, notice the 1st picture reports that my Storage Card uses 405.8 MB. However, if i go to the details (2nd picture), if you add up all the usage per folder, it only total to 308 MB. Where's the missing 100MB? I also tried manually investigating this through RESCO Explorer and the same result, usage report doesn't make sense
what sd brand are you using? i had the same problem when i was using my 512mb sandisk (hey mates, no offense to those using this card). the storage indicators showed that i had 480mb of free space...but when i loaded my files i found that i could only use 380-plus mb. card said it was full but the indicator said i still had space to use. i did a number of reformats but no avail; still stuck with the 380mb limit.
since then i've switched to using a 1gig toshiba card; works well for me. indicators show that i had 988 of free space...which is exactly the amount of files i was able to load.
cheers
i'm using this brand of SD Card
well, from what i gather there are some sd card brands which seem to have poor quality in terms of storage, speed and such. when i switched to using toshiba and panasonic cards; i've had no issues since then as compared to when i was still using sandisk or kingston. if you have a bud who has a different brand of card try asking him or better yet try out his card by plugging in your unit.
cheers
Could it be that you are just using loads of small files on a card with large cluster size?

Storage breakdown

Anyone know what is the storage breakdown of Xoom?
We know it has 32 GB internal memory (storage) ... AND it has external SD card (promised).
But, how is this 32 GB internal memory layout?
Is it now all 32 GB for "apps"? That's a waste of space!
Or is it partitioned, one partition for apps and other partition for storage?
Or is it free-for-all for both "apps" and "storage"?
No Xoom in display at MWC Barcelona?
The app storage will probably be a small section cut out of the 32gb internal memory. It will probably be at least 2gb. with 29gb something remaining for free available space for video, music, etc.
You wont be able to access or see this "space" as it'll be a system "folder" that only Android can manipulate.

What makes you think that the 2GB will be shared with the apps? Is this common for Android? Since 2.2 you could install on the memory card. If this is so, why couldn't we just install on the larger partition?

I kinda wrote that wrong
The Xoom has 8gb internal and 32 external sdcard.
The app storage will be cut out of the 8gb internal memory me thinks.
Huh, I thought it was 32GB of internal storage with an SD expansion slot. Having us 'pay' for a 32GB card doesn't sound right. Give us the 8GB and let us choose what size SD card we go for.
Anyhow, breakdown is unknown, we'll have to wait and see.
Why did you start 2 threads that are essentially the same subject and both regarding information nobody has yet?

Thumbnail files over 4gb but no photos

My internal sd card running out of space. it says I only have 900 mb free. I went to look to see what's taking up space and found that is the .thumbnail files in the DCIM/thumbnails folder. These files are 4 gigabytes in size. Yet I have very little pictures on my tablet. I'm trying to delete the files, but when I delete them no space is freed up. I have looked on the xda forums but no one seems to have a solution. Since my internal sd card is only 16 gigabytes this 4 gigabyte error takes up to 25 percent of my space. Please help I need a solution.:crying:

External SD Card Free Space Doesn't Seem Correct

I have a 64GB sd card in my phone to use. Right now, I have about 18GB of free space. I've also figured out by looking at my folders on the SD card that I've used up less than 20GB. Why does my SD card show that I only have 18GB of free space then? I should have another 20GB+ of free space. What is taking up this space and where can I find it and get that space back?
For a quick FYI, I'm positive I've rooted and put my ROM into the stock partition.

Go to settings / storage, then tell us what it says the TOTAL SPACE is for your SD Card. That'll give us a better idea of whats going on and possibly help you.
It's possible your card is only formatted to 32gb due to it possibly being in fat32 and its a bit more of a challenge to format it to the 64gb. This might shed some light on what i'm talking about: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041679

Then it is formated and showing correctly. On that same page it should tell you how much free space you have. My suggestion is to hook it up to your pc, highlight all the folders on the SD Card and click properties. Might have more there than you think. Its possible you have some backups going to the SD Card?

[Q] Moving files to 128 GB

I just got my SanDisk 128GB micro SD.
Put the 128 in the adapter and plugged into PC.
Attached the Note 3 to PC with USB 3 cable.
Copied all the files in the 64 GB card (folder by folder) to the new card.
Put the new card in the Note.
Some things like video moved fine.
Docs to Go needed to be reinstalled and then refused to read the docs.
Many aps come up "grayed out" with sd on the icon.
They all seem to need to be re installed.
What did I do wrong?
How do I do this transfer correctly - I still have my Note 8 to do.
Thanks.

Not true at all.
Under Settings, Storage it shows my SD card at 119 GB capacity.
Available 114 GB
No I don't know where where 9 GB disappeared to.

The difference from 119 to 128 is from the difference of "measurement units" in storage vs memory - 119 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 is about the same as 128 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000. The funny part is that the difference is not really stolen by Sandisk, the card almost certainly has 128 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 but the difference is used for basically error-correction.
The problem with the copy 64->128 is that there might be hidden files on the 64 which are not easily visible over MTP, probably the safest way is to get both cards directly connected to some PC and some software that is showing you everything (or alternatively some software that does "disk migration").
You missed a folder. The phone won't show it, not even over mtp, but a computer does.
It's called .Android_secure, I believe. This contains the app files.
