Thumbnail files over 4gb but no photos - Acer Iconia A500

My internal sd card running out of space. it says I only have 900 mb free. I went to look to see what's taking up space and found that is the .thumbnail files in the DCIM/thumbnails folder. These files are 4 gigabytes in size. Yet I have very little pictures on my tablet. I'm trying to delete the files, but when I delete them no space is freed up. I have looked on the xda forums but no one seems to have a solution. Since my internal sd card is only 16 gigabytes this 4 gigabyte error takes up to 25 percent of my space. Please help I need a solution.:crying:

Misreporting Internal Storage Space?

So I had copied a LOT of large files to and from my Vibrants internal storage. I noticed I was down to 500 Megs (on the 16 gig), and I couldn't for the life of me find where these magic huge files were. I cleared off all videos, roms, pretty much anything that was taking up space and it wasn't making a dent.
Checking just the folders in view reported like 4gigs used. Checking the drive itself reported almost 12.5gigs used.
I found the .trashes (hidden) dir on the internal SD card which had over 8Gigs of trash to be removed. Any one know how to get rid of this NOT from a PC/MAc?
Anyway... its been removed, and i have a ton of space left. Just thought I would mention it to anyone having a similar issue.

The .Trashes folder is created by OSX when you drag files into the trash. It's how the OS keeps track of what you've moved to the trash, but not quite deleted. It's a great way to do it on your computer's HD, but it's a horrible way to handle it on a removable drive. To alleviate the problem, after you delete files from your phone, empty your trash on you computer. Alternatively, rm -r /sdcard/.Trashes and rm -r /sdcard/sd/.Trashes works equally well.
Alternatively if you're on a pc, hold the shift key down when you press delete and the files will actually be deleted instead if being moved to your trash.

Also, IIRC the internal SD card may be 16GB, but it is partitioned into 3 partitions. Those partitions are mounted at /data, /data_tmo, and /sdcard. /data and /data_tmo are used to store the apps you install (as well as some of the pre-loaded apps, perhaps) and their data.
In the Settings, if you open "SD card and phone storage", combine Phone storage and Application storage, and you'll have to 16GB (after it's been formatted and represented in base-2 instead of base-10, which means it'll be closer to 14 or 15).

16Gb Epic SD Card Loaded with 7Gbs of.. What?

I just noticed the SD card came preloaded with 7Gbs of stuff inside.. But.. What stuff? I removed everything that I had on the SD and it said it had 7Gb still been used.
I notice that the stock card was only showing half the capacity as well, without any actual files being on it. I would suggest just reformatting the card.
No big deal for me since I'm using a 32GB card but I did notice the size discrepancy.
full 16 gigs here. well, accually 14.7

Same for me. What size is the card showing when you put it in a pc directly?

14.7. And it had around 7.10 used.
The 16GB card shows only 14.7GB because the other 1.3GB is used by the file system/structure when the card is formated. Without the file sytem created on the card, it would be useless as the device would not know where to look for the files you store on the memory card. On a 32GB card the file system created should technicaly be double of the 16GB. My 8GB memory card only shows like 7.4GB after a format if I remember correctly. Hope I answered some questions.

Not really, I think we all know this. I said the memory stick came preloaded with 7Gb of extra stuff.
Mine has over 14GB of free space 16GB card the Epic comes with. Left it as it came in the box and didn't format it. The only things I added to it myself (outside of the stuff the phone's apps adds) were the pictures from my old phone and the rooting/recovery stuff downloaded here.
wait so do you have 7,9 or 14 gigs of space left? Cause i had 14
There's some 14.xGBs of free'd up space on the sd card when you buy it, at least on mine and most people I've talked to, so I don't know what's up with yours coming loaded with 7GBs this mystery data.
I have 14 gigs of free space on my card too.

Mine didn't come with anything preloaded. 14.7GB free from the getgo. Have you tried just formatting it completely?

um... no...
this is caused by manufacturers marketing vs how computers count bytes.
1 kb = 1024 bytes
1 mb = 1024 x 1024 = 1,048,579 bytes
1 gb = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes
manufactures market 1 gb = 1,000,000,000 bytes
it would take 17,179,869,184 bytes to be a full 16gb
manufactures only put 16,000,000,000 bytes on a card
((16,000,000,000 / 1024) / 1024) / 1024 = 14.9011612 gb
I remember reading that the prerelease versions of the Epic (like mine) would have the full version of Asphalt 5, and the versions for the public would have the demo only. I had about 7GB full on my card, figured it was a glitch, and formatted. Now I've finally gotten around to downloading Asphalt and it's the demo. Good thing I hate racing games, but still...

[Q] question about internal memory

hey guys so finally I was able to move most of my apps to the storage card as I had only less than 40 mb left on the internal storage,
I used the adb method that was posted on this forum, know that i have over 140 apps installed, I kept on purpose the IGO and 4 other apps on the internal memory which take about 50 mb by. But besides that I moved all the other apps to the storage card. The weird thing is that I am now left with about 115 mb out of a total 380 mb from the internal storage.
What is taking the remaining memory from the internal storage?
You'll still have some space taken up by the apps you left on for widgets etc, and the ones that went to the sd leave a few kb's behind.
The rest is all bloatware my friend, timescape, what's app and all the other sh*t they won't let you uninstall.
Also cache from most programs.

yes whats app, timescape, postcard, the sims 3, tetris, playnow etc are some culprits, i cant wait for root to remove this bloat i dont need.
Annoying really.
The SIMS. I hate the SIMS.
Postcard ? Really ??
What's App, 1 year free sub then can't uninstall if you don't pay.
Testris ? In 2011 ??
No thanks, I'd rather have the memory... Oh, I can't !

The adb method will only use the SD Card? or it is the same as moving the app to the SD CARD (Some part of the app will still be on the memory?)
if SD Card only please add the link on how to do it ..
Thanks a lot..

The 380MB you're talking about is actually the available RAM size (from a total of 512MB). The storage space for installed apps resides in the NAND flash which has a total of 400MB free.
The RAM size will reduce as more background tasks are running, i.e. you kept opening apps and didn't close them properly.
The NAND flash storage space will reduce as you install more and more apps, but many apps are able to offload their data files to the SDcard.

System Storage Filling Up Fast

Hi All,
I have noticed that my system storage on the device has steadily been increasing day by day.
When I first got the phone only about 80 MB was filled up, now after 4 days its up to 120 MB.
I move all the apps I download to the SD card immediately. On system storage only 1 app has been installed "noLED", which cannot be transferred to SD card, rest all are installed on SD card.
I have notice that whenever I download an app from the market, and even if the app is installed/moved to SD card immediately( even before launching it for the first time), the system storage data increase by 1-2 MB, which ideally should not happen.
I know that the system storage has 1.9 GB of data storage space, but at the rate with which it is filling up it wont take long to run out of space.
Can anyone suggest what I should do to free up space in my system storage ?

Missing internal storage space.

Hi guys, I've just discovered that a lot of my internal space is missing. When formatted I think the phone has 26GB available and now it says I have 7GB left which is impossible. All my photos and videos are on my SD card, when I select all the folders on Device Storage including the hidden ones it says they're a total of 6GB. My apps are 12GB total but 5 of those are from Spotify which is in my SD card also. Also the games' data is included in those 6GB stated earlier and they are around 3GB. So by my calculations I've got to have around 16GB of free space, not 7. Can you help me identify the problem? Thanks.
Did you ever figure this out?
