Ok guys, weird question...my screen is totally scratched up, no idea how it happened, but I am really pissed off about it. Anyway, I have the best buy extra insurance (Black tie?). I want to brick my DX so they can give me a new one. ****ed up I know, but I am paying for it, so I might as well take advantage. How do i do, or what is the best way to make it irrecoverable?
If you bought the accidental plan, just drop in in a puddle. I told them i was gonna hack it when i bought it and they said no problem but if anything happens and I have to bring it in, I better make sure it doesnt power on at all.
Best solution, pop it in the microwave for a couple seconds. It will nit power on after that.

why don't you just tell them you lost it.. .
put it in a bowl and piss on it

I swear I will do it, but I need to know if it will show any damage or whatever. Either this or I was thinking about telling them I dropped it and bash it with a hammer over a towel or something.

I'm not going to get into the morality implications of insurance fraud, but this is the kind of thing that makes protection policies expensive for the rest of us. Just something to think about.

Hes turning in the phone, so they are able to repair it and give it to the next person that breaks their phone. This saves us cost, because the other alternative is him reporting it lost and just keeping it.
You could always do the OTA then sbf 2.1. done brick. and you dont have to break anything, and now best buy and asurion will lower our insurance costs! jk

No, the alternative is to just live with his scratched up phone. Any other "alternative" which gets him a new phone on the policy's dime (including reporting it lost), is a crime.

yeah, its being shady. But so is rooting. Your breaching contract, just to remove bloat ware. Wireless tether for root users is also "stealing". List goes on and on. But thats why were here.
Forums arent the place for moral, political, or religious debate. Not trying to be mean, just keepin it real.
and if/when you get a replacement, may i recommend a screen protector....
Maaaaan all you have to do is say the on screen keyboard doesn't work its a software issue it only works when it wants to. Just remember The customer is ALWAYS right...I did it over the phone threatned to cancle my service and 2 days later new phone that was the droid 1 though. Id still take a fat **** on it though just so you can say you did it for conversation sakes.

Wow, I missed that, when did that change
It changed last month. It is really nice now, but people still question insurance. However this doesn't help w/ lost or stolen or water damaged devices. Also physical damage can be fixed in house now if we have the parts.

When I took my phone in I removed root completely. But I made a backup just before I unrooted. So all I did was did unrevoked root real quick. Flashed amon-ra with Rom manager and nand recovered previous settings. Simple as pie.

Why does everybody worry about taking their phones in for repair if they are rooted? As long as what you want to get fixed isn't software related they don't care. I am rooted and running Fresh with Riptide's theme and took my phone in last month for a screen replacement and yesterday to replace a broken plastic cover over the camera lens. Nothing was said the first time for the screen, and yesterday I was asked how I was getting the great battery life I was getting so I told them it was due to the custom ROM and kernel. They were impressed. And, yes both repairs were free because I have Total Equipment Protection.

Most of them won't care or won't even know. But all it takes of that one guy to care and then void your warranty. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to take that chance because of laziness.

I would raise holy hell if they tried to void my warranty on a non-software related issue I brought my phone in for. Feel free to root and unroot all you want. I'll stick with "laziness".
I had my screen crack fixed by Sprint. I simply flashed Joey Krim's stock looking rooted 2.2 and they didn't ask a question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699847
Just make a nandroid of your phone. I put my OEM SD card back in the phone and kept my good SD card with me. They fixed my screen, no questions asked. However, when they accidentally broke my volume down button on the side (need that one!) they just gave me a new phone. Nothing but good things about Sprints service.
I'm probably going to exchange my Epic on Monday or Tuesday for another one.
The bad part is I've got a screen protector on it, the good part is I bought a 2-pack of Seidio protectors and I put this one on bad anyway so once I exchange out I'll still be good.
I know to flash back to stock ROM/kernel/everything with ODIN, but is there anything else I need to pay attention to?
Thanks in advance.
(For anyone wondering: I'm doing it over some qualms with battery life and the slide mechanism. I don't want things to get any worse and have to make an insurance claim or pay $35 or whatever down the line.)
I ODIN'd back to stock in order to do the Froyo upgrade.. and then upgraded to Froyo, obviously.
If I return it Monday with Froyo on it, will they deny me? I mean, it TECHNICALLY came from Samsung.. but the staff might not know or care, since it is technically flashing firmware and all that jazz.
TIA, etc
If you're doing a 30 day exchange, they REALLY don't give a ****. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but we're all way too busy trying to sell new phones that as long as you don't have liquid or physical damage, we're not concerned.
So yeah, rest easy... We have quotas to meet =)

By the way -- can you tell me how many Epics you've seen get returned for battery or slide issues? Just want to know if I'm nitpicking or not..

I am simply swapping for another -- and I think it would be worth keeping even if we were stuck on Eclair.
ADMITTEDLY, it's my first Android phone.. but it's amazingly fast and I am in love with the thing. Just not how my particular phone seems to suck battery life, have a loose-enough-to-cause-concern slider and generally make me want to hate it.
Speaking as a tech, If you take it to a service and repair store they will look at the software. The good news is that the software is technically from Samsung and Sprint can't prove otherwise. If you're taking it to a normal store that doesn't have techs they will probably just exchange it no questions asked
My S&R store won't even look, we're too busy. If it powers on and there's no damage, we take it in.
That being said, we don't get many returns at all. We explain the battery life to the customer, haven't seen too many faulty slides.

Most likely.. Everyone I exchange or see sales return, the customer Is back a couple weeks later.. It's how you use the battery not the phone... Android is different, you're gonna have to get use to it.. Not saying that being a ****..

I know that there is a fix that one can do here shown in the forums. However, I do not want to dissect the phone. My phone is not rooted but I am not sure if I feel confident to send it to HTC because I'm not sure what is considered a "loose fix" to them so they might just send it back to me without any fix and I would have to pay for the charge.
I call HTC about it and they said they would check the problem out because I am still under warranty. Has anyone else sent their phones to HTC to fix the loose hinge issue?
it shouldnt really matter if the phone is rooted..... would it? I can't imagine that HTC would void the devices build warranty for software.

Like what 3rd party? Since you didn't get it from t-mobile, t-mobile will say they won't reaplace and ask you to ask the place where you bought it from to fix it.

What's the point in getting it replaced with another G2 that has the same hinge problem? They're all like that.
Newer models weren't fixed? Thats too bad. Anyways, I got it cheap on ebay. Of course, I can not send it back for a replacement. I hinge isn't as loose as I have seen others on youtube. Its just lying down on the bed is an issue for me. I called HTC and said its still under warranty and can possibly fix this if it is an "issue" to them.

hmmm. what I am confused about now is what the warranty covers? I can understand the warranty being voided if rooted. However, for accidental physical damages/ liquid(water) damage, what can you do with the warranty? I thought this would apply to phone defects. Tmobile even said that the early models of the G2 were defective. Its just weird that HTC won't fix it for you even if the issue is known from a larger perspective.
Send it to someone on this forum willing to do the spring replacement for you.
An fyi for those out there in love with your og dinc! Be careful with it I accidentally ran mine over and Asurion is replacing them with DInc2s, Im not sure how I feel about it yet as i wont get my hands on it for a couple of days as im out of town and wont be home until late tomorrow luckily I had a spare phone and my tablet
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA Premium App
I wished that happened to me. I had to go through that process, but they still sent me a Dinc.
The 2 isn't bad now that its permanently rooted and they've got AOSP roms (CM7, MIUI) as well as sense ones, if that's what you're in to. It seems pretty responsive and the screen looks pretty nice too, blacks aren't as good as my AMOLED incredible, but aside from that it looks good to my eyes.
Its a decent enough looking phone an all im just not sure what im gonna do i may just sell the inc2 and keep the x (my backup phone) even though im not a big fan of the droid x ill see after i get cm7 on it...

It seems that the DInc2 is better than the DInc... except I prefer amoled over super LCD... but that's the only downfall really...
But is it definite that Asurion will give out DInc2 instead of the DInc? Cause... maybe my phone will break all of a sudden...

No it doesn't matter, that is what Assurion is for, they handle replacements that are not covered by your warranty. So if you brick your phone and can recover it, they replace it after you pay your deductible.
Good to know, wasn't sure to what extent they would cover. Thank you
There's a new deductible isn't there? Any idea what it is now? I cracked the glass around the side of my phone the first week, and have been babying it for the last year. The touch screen is now having issues, but I'm just not sure i want to part with my phone.
