All of a sudden I am not able to connect to the internet at all.
Yesterday at the doctor's office i decided to turn off the phone in communications manager (Start>Settings>Connections>Communications Manager) so that I would not receive any phone calls but would be able to play some games.
After I was done with the doctor I re-enabled the phone and was able to call people and connect to the internet without a hitch.
This morning I see at the top of the phone that I have a phone signal but there is an x next to the data signal. I tried to connect but nothing happened.
I went back to communications manager and tried to put a check mark next to Data Connection but after some "thinking" by the phone I get a message Data Connection could not be changed.
So I called up mu provider, T-Mobil, there were no outages for my area, and had them reset my link with the cell towers. Same problem.
I do notice that in Communication Manager the Airplane AND Phone are highlighted.
Should'nt the Airplane in Communication Manager be greyed out?
Is there another problem that i am not aware of?
I was able to re-set my internet settings by using the Connection Setup(start>settings>connections>Connection Setup) but still cannot access the net.
Is there some other way to ENABLE the data connection?
Yes I do have a Data Plan and I checked from my laptop, online, in the "My Usage" on the T-Mobil website and noticed that at last night at 9:31pm, 10:31p, 11:31pm and lastly at 12:31 I had received data. This information was update as on 6:45am this morning. So basically I have not had internet since 12:31am.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
x
My conversation with SE - USA
Agent Patricia: Hi, thanks for choosing Sony Ericsson Chat Support. My name is Patricia. How may I help you?
Paul: I have the Xperia X2 and it has been very flakey since i bought it. Althought the internet has been fine for a while this morning I cannot get any connection at all. Can you help me??
Paul: I believe the settings somehow were changed
Agent Patricia: Do you get an error message when you try to connect to the internet?
Paul: yes, "cannot connect to the internet, please check your settings
Agent Patricia: That means that the settings were changed. It happens if you reset the phone o something like that.
Agent Patricia: In order to get the internet settings into your phone again you need to contact your service provider so they can send the settings to you.
Paul: When i go to communication manager and check "enable data connection, it will not allo mw to do so
Paul: I get a message "data connection could not be changed"
Agent Patricia: Have you tried to reset the phone pressing the Reset button located on the back of it?
Paul: yes
Paul: several times
Agent Patricia: In that case, please contact your service provider to make sure you have the correct settings.
Paul: Done that already , same problem
Paul: the phone is not allowing the data connection to work
Agent Patricia: You'll need to update the software on the phone.
Paul: Has there been an update after June 2010?
Agent Patricia: No, but the update is also used on technical issues to make sure that the phone works properly.
Paul: This will reseet my fhone?
Agent Patricia: yes
Agent Patricia: Please check if you can try this: To set up Internet settings from your phone:
Tap the Start icon > Settings > Connections > Connections Setup.
Tap Next to configure your device with MMS and GPRS/HSPA (Internet) settings.
Paul: this is very inconvenient
Paul: I have had nothing but trouble with this phone
Paul: I have reset the phone many times already.
Paul: Why is this phone so buggy?
Paul: It has given me so many problems
Agent Patricia: We are sorry for the inconveniences that you are having with the phone.
Agent Patricia: I am trying to help you fix it.
Paul: I have bought many phones from and never had so many problems as this phone has given me
Paul: thanks for trying to help
Paul: but this phone needs a complete overhaul
Agent Patricia: Were you able to try the steps I provided before?
Paul: yes. . . same problem
Agent Patricia: You may try updating the phone using the Sony Ericsson Update Service and if that doesn't work contact us at 1-866-766-9374 as we will need a technician to look at your unit and determine what the problem may be.
Agent Patricia: You can also try to configure Internet settings manually:
Tap the Start icon > Settings > Connections > Connections.
Tap Add a new modem connection.
Enter a name for the connection, then select Cellular line (GPRS) in the drop-down box, then tap Next.
Enter the Access point name, then tap Next.
If required, enter User name, Password, Domain and Advanced settings. Tap Finish.
Tap Manage existing connections and select the connection you just created, then tap OK.
Note: To get the required information for manual configuration of Internet settings, please contact your service provider.
Paul: ok
Paul: same problem
Agent Patricia: I understand.
Agent Patricia: Please do as suggested before.
Paul: Reset the Phone?
Agent Patricia: Call in.
So I have to reset my phone? Not acceptable.
If I call in, I do not think that I will get any other support since the phone was bought in Europe.
So after being on the phone with T-Mobil for about 1 hr, it was finally determined that there was indeed a service interruption for my area.
I was a bit upset with both SE and T-Mobil for giving me the runaround. "Sorry" this and "I apologize" that, just tell me what is wrong from the first second.
Although this specific incident had nothing to do with the phone hardware or the software on the phone, I only wish that SE would acknowledge that the phone has problems. And to suggest that I need to factory reset the phone is just ridiculous. I spend a lot of time getting the thing to run somewhat right, slow at times but somewhat useable, and to reset that . . . no way I want to go through that again.

For some reason I lost my GPRS connection today and since then I cannot connect. It happened when I was testing my MSN connection between my computer and my XDAii. As I was chatting with myself - sad I know - the connection got lost just as I removed the XDAii from the cradle. When I try to connect I now get this message...
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
The answering modem has disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.
Now, I had a look at my settings and must admit I'm a bit lost as I don't know what is all means, so I've made no changes. I've called O2 support - which takes forever to speak to someone - and someone from the data dept will call back I've been promised, but I don't trust support staff from call centres, been let down too many times in the past!
Does anyone else know what the problem might be pease?
Sorted it out now - for some reason my profile reset itself back to German rather than UK - Wierd!
I have had 3 xda2's that insisted on setting itself to german from the cold boot even though uk was selected, must be a bug.
Hi,
Very confused about this. When I go into connections it lists work connections and when I click on manage work connections there is one I added: VirginNet which uses CSD. No other exists.
Whenever I access a web page it keeps trying to connect to O2 Internet using GPRS.
Any ideas how I get it to stop? Do I have to hit the registry?
Cheers
R u sure there's only 'my work network' & no entry like 'my isp'.
if not create one for the csd type you want & check the advanced tab as well. 'my isp' is for internet. 'my work' for lan.
regards, M
Here goes..
If you open connections, go to the second tab, and click the "select networks" button. This is where you tell the operating system what network connection to ue for which application. You'll be specifically interested in the internet portion, which is the first section.
I had no My ISP section but it obviously still had the details somewhere. I've had to hard reset and start again.
Thanks for the replies though.
I guess, even with a CSD rather than GPRS, if something on my pocketPC tries to connect it will still cost me.
I seem to remember in Pocket PC 2000 that it couldn't do this on its own, it always needed permission.

Click to collapse
Well, you are going to pay for the phone minutes if you use dial up, or you pay for GPRS useage. Actually, I didn't even realize the Magician had a dial up modem...
In any case, you can establish a connection by going to Connections and adding a connection. Select "Cellular Line" (which is the default, and go from there). I haven't done it with the Magician, but I have used dial up with WM2003.

Man,as far as I learnt from my master courses, the GSM is a method for calling. For data transferring,it's GPRS........So if you wanna IE transfer data for ya,GPRS is needed.
That's not entirely true, you can configure a csd connection like with a regular modem.Which dials a number & have the data over the phone call.
Works OK PIE won't see the diff.
Cheers, M
I'm using CSD rather than GPRS because I can use my voice allowance of 200 minutes per month for data access. I've just checked my bill and, going via VirginNet dialup, it is using my allowance rather than being charged. It's slow but I can access the internet on the small number of occasions that I need to.
The question is; if something requires internet access on my pocket PC will it just go ahead and dial up now? Those 200 minutes won't last long if it fails to disconnect.
I would prefer it if the device would actually ask before it went ahead to get internet access.
Yes it will dial up & show shortly a message with the cancel/hide buttons. I'm on flatfee gprs from TMO & don't bother, so I can use journal bar, timesync, true imap mail (vgs mail), have automatic virus scan updates etc. etc. I guess your 200min. will be gone soon. In the Netherlands the internet dial-up numbers are seperate and expensive, so keep an eye on it.
Cheers, M
It all depends on the application you use.
IE won't connect on its own without you telling it to go to a web page. Messaging won't connect without you telling it to connect occasionally either.
Well-developed programs like Worldmate and PocketWeather won't either. You have to specifically allow them to connect, but it's program-dependent. If you install some rogue program that doesn't ask you, then yes, you will have problems.
Just remember that if you dial up using CSD, you will be connecting at around cellular speed 14.4Kbps (unless you connect to a HS connection, which I'm not sure the JARJAR even supports).
Hi,
Thanks for all the info.
In the end I've created 2 CSD profiles, one with user id info etc. and one without. When I don't intend to use the internet I set it to the one without. If anything attempts to get internet access it gets stuck at the network log on dialog and doesn't actually dial out - unless I accidentally hit the ok button on the handset. Best I can do I think.
When I want internet access I switch to the proper profile and it dials out normally.
Don't see why Microsoft couldn't provide a "Don't dial out" profile but there you go.
Cheers
I had a question pertaining to GSM/GPRS. Will the Magician/Jam, etc be able to upgrade to EDGE service once it is available in the U.S. at a decent rate? Will companies force us to upgrade our devices? How long will GPRS be available to consumers?
i just got my phone not a week ago(the Sprint HTC Touch) and just realized that my company does not allow phones with internet access, i was wondering if there was a way i could disable the internet on the phone, so that i dont accidentally fat finger it and open something up... thanks in advance
How about turning off "Data Connection" from the Comm Manager?
i havent tried it, but have you tried deleting the modem settings?
you know, the ones that dial out #777. or maybe you can just get it to dial elsewhere
as far as i know there is no way to do that without deleting the #777 connection in setting/connections/manage current connection.
But then you will not be able to send picture and video message. As that is the same connection it uses.
Also as soon as you soft reset the device. the connection is back again.
Really I don't understand how your company is able to put a cap on this, as most every cell phone now and day can access the internet. Even if it's not activated on the phone, you can still access for a use per minute charge.
And I'm not just talking about pda/phones.
Unless I'm wrong. But i have yet to find one that doesn't.
Call Sprint and have them "Disable NAI Functionality" on your phone. It's a service feature that restricts your device from accessing any kind of data.
settings->connections->connections->advanced->select networks
there are some texts showing "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using"
and a dropdownbox
select the dropdownbox item which is not called something like "my isp"
but pick the one thats called something like "my network"
then all programs trying to access the internet will be forced to use activesync as internet connection and if activesync is not connected they will fail!
thanks.
I have been trying to figure this out for ages. Thanks for your help.
thanks for all of your help, i dont agree with my company, but i really like this phone, i just need to show them that it does not work for a few months then after they stop checking i can re-enable it.
ive been a lurker here and have been searching for a solution all over the place but nothing seems to be working.
i can receive messages fine but sending i cant! this was never a problem with my eten x650...i didnt even touch the settings on my eten and it worked flawlessly
if going to settings > personal tab > phone > click on services tab > click on voice mail and text messages it always brings me an error "cannot read settings from the network. try viewing settings later, or disconnect data connection and try again.
i have tried viewing it later, my data connection is always off since i dont have a data plan.
any tips or help? thanks!
looks like my settings via the sms program and they are:
server name: at&t mms
gateway: wireless.cingular.com
port number: 80
server address: http://mmsc.cingular.com
connect via: at&t isp
send limit:300K
wap version:wap2.0
I had a similar problem It may help if you go to settings connections and clickconnection setup again it worked for me and maybe worth a try before Hard reset etc
Hope it works for you
nope that doesnt work. tried that on multiple accounts.
i had hard resetted for the HTC rom update but still same problem
Ring up your service provide they can help you with the setup and do some test to determin were the fault lays there end or th phone.
Also you may need to check settings/ connections/ advanced network/SMS tab there are some options.
i havent called my service provider but i just think it weird that my previous winmo phone worked fine without even touching the settings. i just popped in the sim.
everything in that sms menu is correct....its "GSM preferred" as people have suggested to me. tried them all and tried to send sms with each setting to no avail.
My sister's phone just started today displaying the EXACT same behavior as b-16707, except her phone is a treo flashed for metro. My wife also has a treo on metro but not experiencing issues at all. My sister has WM5 and my wife's Palm.
just called ATT today and they couldnt help me at all and told me to hard reset. thing is ive hard resetted before and it hasnt worked for me. what is wrong????????? gahhhhh
probably is definitely with the phone as i get the cant send messages error the split second after i hit the send button
I've got a Hd2 which is having a few problem connecting to the Internet. The phone was originally on Virgin network in the UK (which is essentially piggybacked on the T-Mobile network but uses different APN settings) and now I've unlocked it to run on T-Mobile UK. I've never been able to send mms's, but have been able to receive them in the past.
That was until my brother came along and in his infinite wisdom thought he could fix that and now all my Internet settings have gone. I've tried countless times to send them from the T-Mobile website and no joy, cannot download the settings.
SO now I turn to you fine gents and ladies to help me get my phone back on the Intternet please! I basically need to start it from scratch with manual settings I think but if anyone has any other suggestions please go ahead.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Hi mate, what you need to do is:
In Manilla goto the settings tab > Menu > All Settings.
This brings up the standard WM Settings screen.
Then goto Connections > Connection Setup and select your country and operator then click OK.
If it doesnt work then make sure you are connected to a WI-Fi connection then try again.
Then when youve successfully done this, close Connection Setup and you will be returned to the Connections screen.
Now Click Connections icon and where it says: T-Mobile Internet or Web/walk etc, Click the blue link called: Edit my proxy server.
Now uncheck the checkbox that says: This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet. (This has to be done otherwise Windows Live and Messenger wont connect.)
And you are done!
Thanks a lot, got it all sorted now
