Those of you running auto killer in your roms, did you use the aggressive settings or custom?
I'm just curious to see if anyone increased the auto kill.
I use either the aggressive or custom depending on the Rom honestly. DC ROMS= Aggressive. FRESH ROMS= strict. and all others = custom

I have the damagecontrol rom and I dont know if it came with auto killer or what...I restored my titanium backup and all i know is i dont have it now...is there an apk floating around for it?
Try the market
I thought it was a custom xda application. I didn't see it in
the market.

I've been using Aggressive on Fresh 2.0d and it's been running great.
I tried Moderate for a while at first, but Homerun Battle 3D wouldn't even startup consistently. Once I changed it to Aggressive it has been working great.
Another quick note. I know Autokiller is supposed to reapply the settings on boot, but I'm not sure mine is. I haven't rebooted for a day or so, but the last couple times I rebooted I couldn't get Homerun Battle to run. Then I went into Autokiller and applied Aggressive again and it would start. Anybody else having similar experiences?
I used either the aggressive or strick on Fresh 2.0d. So far everything is running the smooth and fast. This the way HTC hero should have come out of the box.
What does each preset do? Is this for speed or battery life or both?

Damn. I wish Homerun Battle 3D would run great for me. Problem is I get crummy service at work and with it going in and out of 1x and EVDO, causes the game to lag.
I have noticed sometimes on first opening HRB, it force closes but it always opens the second time.

i'm running aosp 1.6 from gbhil and i used custom autokiller settings.
the way i see it they made these phones with all this ram may as well use it, what good is it to have all this free ram?
1536,3072,4096 (all default) then hidden app is 7680. content provider is 8960 and empty app is 10240. i normally run around 40-45 free ram thats about where i like it. the phone still runs fine all the way down to 20mb free but any less than that it starts going downhill.
so, im MB my settings are 30 then 35 then 40. runs great!
yeah, I get some lag now and then if I don't have great service. Playing offline seems to work fine though. I think it's just the online play that it effects. A co-worker has a Droid and his lags when playing online as well if he's in a spot without good service.

I did not try that way, I figured if it couldn't be done in freshkitchen then it was just built into the rom. Thanks much again
Just stop using task killers entirely. This isn't Windows Mobile guys. You're getting all OCD in here about the placebo effect.

Autokiller does have a built in task killer but its real use is to tweak memory settings at boot and then shuts itself down (so Android can take care of the rest). So, in reality it is not really a task killer per say.
Fair enough, but it's still entirely pointless. I trust the device manufacturer and Android far more than I ever would the random numbers that I might otherwise delude myself into believing were somehow better.
Just let Android do its thing all of the time. It doesn't need any additional help (particularly with the process management in 2.1). Stop including this garbage in ROMs.

It actually very useful for making roms run smoother. By default the memory numbers are very low, which lets a TON of apps run at the same time. The higher the memory numbers the more it ends apps that you werent even using. It gives what you are currently running or recently ran more priority. Even if you dont use AutoKiller, which is just an app to adjust the memory setting, every rom comes with an edited memory setting other then htc's default. Its most commonly known as gumbo's memory settings.
Also in AutoKiller you can adjust the settings to default, or just really low like htc would have them set.
Its really not a bad thing to include in roms because most people want there rom to be smooth and as close to lag free as they can get. AutoKiller helps achieve that by ending stuff you dont currently have up making the phone run faster. Thats if you have a decently set setting. I run mine on optimum, and it doenst close unnecessary things like if im on the web it stays running.
I can understand an app like Task Killer which just terminates the apps. AutoKiller is just setting the memory setting of your phone, which end apps the same way as if the phone were running normally. Just if the numbers are higher the more apps it will end quicker freeing up more space.
Also you really trust htc and sprint?? haha good luck with that

Either way it should be a choice made by the USER not someone who decides what I need or do not need on my phone. What I choose to have running or not running, there is no need for this garbage for the average joe who just wants something that does not look and feel like Sprint garbage. If its such a great and useful thing put it on the market and let users have a choice.
Alright...so i wanna see what else is working for other ppl.... Like many others im sure u like ur devices quick and snappy....
Ive noticed that disabling surface dithering helps performance for me.....
With Compcache my home screen doesnt have to reload as much when i go back to it from an app.
I have Jit enabled....still cant decide if it hurts or helps.....anybody else?
I left the vm heap size at 16 (stock) ....im guessing its virtual memory but havent tested different settings...
In ADW launcher I have it set up for 4 screens cuz i dont really need anymore...
I set the Desktop scrolling and overshoot both to 0 and have disabled scrollable widget support, and also disabled the Animated drawer effect and the Fade App Labels.
I have the screen cache and system persistent enabled.
I know the adw launcher settings might not be real performance...but it does make the homescreen and app drawer feel much quicker.
What else do you guys use? Whats working for u?
Avoid froyo2sd like the plague.
There are good things about it, but its implementation is riddled with memory and cpu consumption. We need to kill all 8 trillion redundant mounts and all the encryption to make it viable.... that and get the dalvik cache and home directories onto the sdcard with the apk.
guess ill be moving the apps back to the phone to test out performance....thanx
CM6 has been one of the fastest roms I've ever flashed. Here's my current settings:
I've always used compcache so I'm not sure if it helps performance or not anymore.
VM heap size as I understand it from a few google searches is related to the amount of ram dedicated/allocated to/per background process(es). I currently have mine a 12mb with no weird side effects.
The argument for jit is that it makes opening apps a little slower but it helps out with intensive apps like maps and browser. I have it on and my dialer still opens within 2 seconds, and browser seems better so idk.
ADW with 0 scrolling speed looks ugly and jerky =p I usually stick within 300-400, using only three screens, no dockbar, no nexus dots, sliding top paginator, no drawer animation, no status bar (you can swipe up/down and it shows up anyway), no background on the lab/rab/launcher,no scrollable widgets, screen cache, etc. I only use the calendar, powercontrol, and 4*4 music widget and a handful of icons. I find those settings to be smooth as butter.
I also turned off autorrotation except for 180*, I always find it annoying when I have my phone in my lap or I'm laying down watching tv and it rotates on me, and sometimes it's more comfortable to hold the phone upside down (I also use it when i listen to music so the headphones are on top). Also 3D gallery has no rotate bugs for me....
Yeah those settings haven't failed me yet. I haven't even gotten around to overclocking since its so good and speedy.
I noticed a huge difference when I swapped from adwlauncher to launcherpro, launcherpro just seems a lot faster and smoother then adw. I'm also running compcache and jit, overclocked to 610mhz. I'm getting linpack scores of.4.25 MFLOPS, quadrant scores of 370 and neocore scores of 21FPS(sound) and 24.1FPS(no sound). My phone is definitely running faster then it ever has..now the real test is mastering swype...

same question. what kernal did you use to overclock above 576? when you used a different kernal, did it break wifi or anything?
my experience:
I left OC at 576,
turned off dithering
turned compcache on
turned jit on, and reboot
no swap, but type free in terminal to make sure compcache is working.
go into normal phone settings > display > turned off all animations
go into ADW settings and turned off animations, turned desktop scrolling speed to as fast as possible, turned off animated drawer, make sure system persistent is checked, and just made sure all scrolling speeds are set to as fast as possible with no animations or fades.
for me this thing is flying. as fast as any donut I ever flashed and way faster then any 2.1. with the above settings, im constantly getting a little over 4 mflops.
no lag, and only once in a while will it reload the launcher when returning to home. if i enable swap it may never do it
get a random FC every one in a while (not often at all) but no big deal.
just wanted to share what i did and my experience so far
still wondering if anyone has OC past 576 and with what kernal. if so, what any problems? or battery life issues?
I really don't suggest a bigger OC then 576 unless you have a big battery....
My findings are each Mhz of overclock drives down battery 2%. My phone overclocks steady at 691 w/ no reboot but battery doesn't live more then a few hours. I haven't even used set cpu yet since I feel the rom is fast enough.
Oh and linpack results don't really matter at all.... Your phone does not often have to perform loads of math and java calculations...

CM6 runs HORRIBLY slow for me. Tried every speed tip I can do - it's just unreasonably slow. Yes, I wiped before I flashed, even redownloaded CM6 and have latest gapps. Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm talking about so slow I can't get to my homescreen from an app in less than 30 seconds.

do the persistant thing in adw it keeps launcher in memory after that rare home reloads use set cpu and oc to 576 and a528 thats what i have and i would suggest doing fix_permissions through terminal just did that it took like 3 min but damn its freaking fast now and i was about to get rid of cm6 cause it was starting to run sluggish
I've been using: compcache on, JIT on, dithering off (which was a big one), and VM size set to 16. Also I ditched ADW for LauncherPro and CM6 is no slower than CM5 was for me, if anything its faster. I'm loving that my G1 boots twice as fast on CM6

Done it all. :/ When I mean horribly laggy, I mean that I would miss a phone call before the phone got off of the lockscreen to accept it. :/
I'm persistent, though, and tried again today. For some reason everything seems to be running like it should now. Time to finally get to try these speed tips. =]

ive tried:
kanging the Phone.apk from the LFD froyo
&
installing the Phone.apk from the Cytown thread none which have worked and yes ive flashed, wiped and done everything correctly
When I loaded my phone up like my N1 it started to get really laggy so I download minfree and setcpu and now it's a bit better
the stock linpack for me was 5.9 and when used setcpu and put it on ondemand it went up to 9.1

Did you have it set to ondemand? The dev has stated that it works on the Galaxy phones if it's set to conservative. I've had it running on conservative for at least 4 hours now with no reboots. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727006

I had it on ondemand but every time the screen was off for more than 10 min the screen would not come back on.
I uninstalled it and everything was fine, then I reinstalled it and left it on conservative but adjusted the speed to 400 min -1000 Max 20-100% and 100 min -400 Max 0-20% and it works fine.
I also notice that this phone runs way more apps in the background than a N1, the N1 runs 28-35 apps in the background before the system starts shutting things down and this phone runs 50+, the last time I counted after bootup it was at 59.
So I started using an app I bought like 1 year ago, Taskiller Pro and set it up for autokill when screen is turn off and my phone works great.

Find out how many apps are running after a reboot and find out what services each of those apps are accessing.
If you see a game or say a pic editor that is accessing a service it does not need like gps or anything like that delete it and find something similar.
I'm finding that these apps that are accessing parts of the phone they do not need and sending your personal info to the developer and when you get a bunch of these types of apps it puts a huge strain on your phone.
Also download a task manager that kills your selected apps when the screen turns off, just remember to setup an ignore list and include all the systems services and launcher in that list or your phone will freak out.

I'm on day 3 and haven't gotten any lag yet....
Started seeing lags as well
The G1 was very laggy. This phone has no reason to be. It started out great as stock. But once I loaded up my normal apps, it's just started getting very sluggish. It does it in fits and starts - except for certain actions like going to the settings page of the Dolphin browser and exiting the Dolphin browser, or getting the task list of . Those are always sluggish. I also switched the 2GB Micro SD card to a 4GB class 4 MicroSD card and transferred Avatar to it. It has nothing else on it.
I'm going to start deleting software one by one and see what's causing this. But I'm not sure if it's any one software or just the fact that I have some 37 apps loaded.
i am having lag specifically with the stock email app for my exchange account.
my inbox will take sometimes about 5 to 10 seconds to load (shows black screen) and then many messages will be blank for them to load which is typically about 5 seconds.
randomly, some messages load fine. big or small.
in a related issue, i have had various events on this phone completely crash it and the os started over/home screen reloaded.
I stopped using a task killer and I've stopped having issues.

My G1 (albeit with a custom rom and no bloat) was actually more responsive than the Vibrant I used in a T-Mobile store. Which is kinda funny because the guy working there was like "Hey how come your G1 is faster".
And then I went into the internet browser and my G1 performance fell to **** when scrolling through pages.
On topic: Try clearing your cache with the likes of CacheCleaner. It usually helps my G1's performance, dunno what it'll do to the Vibrant.

What task killer were you talking about ?
I use Taskiller and Minfree and my phone will not even work without them.
If you don't set Taskiller up properly it will cause more problems than you have, YOU HAVE TO setup the ignore list on ALL system apps and services or your phone will go nuts.
Hi All,
I got my Desire HD about 3 weeks ago and have been loving it. However I am now getting a reoccurring problem of Lag. Sometimes its minimal, some times its a large amount.
If I leave my phone on for a considerable amount of time I am finding that I always have to restart to get rid of the lag.
I never really have that many apps open, but sometimes even when playing something like doodle jump its starts to lag.
I am no expert on how phones work, but a couple of friends have iPhones and if you look in their task manager sometimes about 30 apps are left open with no real effect on the phones lag, where as the HD with a better CPU and RAM does not seem to be able to handle it. I decided to go with the Desire HD over the iPhone as i love google, but at the moment the lag is causing laughter amongst my friends who got the iPhone 4!
The only things that I ever really leave running are HTC sense, Facebook for sense (for contacts), Calendar and messaging and GMail. Surely this cannot cause such a hideous amount of lag.
When i look at running services its says "other:77MB in 4 Avail:316+155MB in 30" What does this mean?
I also have android task manager and at the top it says "Available Memory 323M" Is this right? Surely it should be pushing 764? (this is when jsut booted and everything then closed)
Also jsut a quick question, when you pull down the drop down settings bar from the home page, under your carriers names, there is a lsit of apps which you can scroll right on, what are these? Open apps? Recently opened apps?
Also, how do you stop apps starting on start up?
Also, i select kill apps on task manager and then i look 10 mins later and they are running again, why is this?
OMG!!! first thing with android 2.2 DONT! use a task killer tasks will just restart
first there DHD and many other phones have a bit of a lag bug that is caused by a rouge /INIT process to prevent this enable USB debuging in the settings for somereason this fixes it.
the list of apps below the carrier in the notifaction pane is just the recently open application the same list that you would get by pressing and holding the home button these applications are not running.
also ignore the ram thing in the task manager yes the desire has 768mb of ram however a portion of that is locked for i think the fast boot feature (because it works by storing the os and its current state into the ram for fast startup later ~130mb )
also the launcher is also taking up ram when the phone is on
ie...dont worry about it because when android needs more ram it will clear it out for other higher priority applications
but yeah dont use task killers, enable usb debugging stop going crazy over 'missing' ram
i suggest you read about how android multi tasks to you can find it over on the offical android guide website.
I have usb debugging on and I still get bad lag the odd time.

Yeah same here, happened today, quite badly too.
One guaranteed method to get rid of the lag.
PermRoot > Flash Clockwork Mod > Flash an OverClock Kernel > Overclock with SetCPU setting "Performance" as the governor.
Say goodbye to lag, it won't bother you again.
Full guides can be found in the DHD > Android Development section.
try using another launcher, i used to find sense used to be a little laggy at times on my legend but other launchers like launcher pro were fine.
also if you mean lag when typing on the htc ime keyboard disable the haptic feedback vibration for somereason they make it lag out
For me I have USB debugger on, but when I am playing a game, for example Angry Bird, initially it is smooth, but for a while, there will be a lag... Then it will return to normal... I believe its when my syncing occur that causes the lag...
Would turning off quick/fastboot give us more ram ?
The DHD has a shed load of RAM, I wouldn't imagine that leaving Fast Boot on, or turning it off would affect performance or lag directly.

probably that reserved 136mb ?, actually i think if fast boot is disabled it would make no differnce i think that htc have a bit reserved for the os and sense so that all core systems are always loaded.

How much ram do you usually have free in daily use?
I'm experiencing Sense reboots when ram gets down <100Mb and it's kinda frustrating waiting the homescreens to bootup again and again.
I'm rooted and using LeeDroids HD 3.0.1 GB ROM and hes custom kernel.
Flash CM7, all of your lag and memory problems will go away :-D
I'm using stock frequency and I never see lag and memory for me doesn't go over 50% unless playing a game or such.
But to have to say goodbuy to sense which is definitely worth it.

Theres the thing that I like the Sense and don't really want to give it up but I was wondering if other Sense users had similar experiences and how did they manage those

Hey! I got my G2 a couple of months ago, and I'm loving it, but! There is a problem with when I tries to wake up (when I unlock it) or simply go to home screen.. it takes up to 5 seconds to show me the icons or be at all responsive... I have a bunch of folders and icons on the desktop, but no intense widgets or anything...
Does anyone esle have this problem or is my hard/software malfunctioning?

No problems for me... I got the off Rom, bunch of widgets on the desktop and it's a question for less than a half of second to display.
Have you tried to use "Advanced Task Killer" (available for free on the market)? You might have something running in background which should be "killed".

Sorry but I'm gonna have to fight against this suggestion. Task killers have been completely useless since 2.2 (and especially in 2.3). Running task killers to blanket kill apps hurts performance and battery life in most cases. It has been shown that simply allowing apps and processes to run in the background to finish their tasks and then store in memory is better for performance that constantly killing them, only to have them repeatedly restart over and over again.
If you think you're having issues with malfunctioning tasks, I'd recommend trying out Watchdog Lite in the market. It doesn't kill tasks, just monitors RAM and CPU usage, and gives you an alert when there is an App or Task taking up an unusual amount of resources (you set the threshold). From there, you can choose to kill or troubleshoot the issue with the individual app.
OP, what kind of ROM are you running? Just stock? Rooted? The stock G2 can definitely start to slow down when transitioning from portrait to landscape, or coming back to home after a long time in a given app because the processor really isn't that fast (only 800mhz out of the box). I noticed this as well when my phone was stock.

Good point... agree.
OP; What, if any, mods have you made to yur phone?
To me this happens when the Sense Home app seems to be thrown out of active memory when I open some or many applications. I heard of a G1 method of priorising an app to keep it from being unladed comletely. Is there a file that explains this?
I have the advanced task killer app, and I sometimes kill useless apps that are running I the background.. I'm gona try watchdog instead..
Now for the mods, I had my phone oc'd to 1.4 back in the day, before ppl figured out how to permaroot, but then there was an update that prevented old style temproot. I didn't have much free time, so I never looked into new rooting options. So, I guess bottom line is that now I have an unrooted stock phone. I had a setspu profile to dicrease the freq when not in use to conserve battery, but I turned it off and the problem is still there.
Also the benchmark tests for the cpu look normal..

So, I tried watchdog, and whenever the screen freezes, it shows that desctop is using 99.9% or the cpu... i have a live wallpaper running though.. could that do it?..
