Happy to hack? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I'm almost more happy that the hd2 came with windows on our originally, if only for the fact that I've secretly been enjoying going through the development process, learning about android and linux, about the amazing work that some of these developers do in their spare time, plus the joy of knowing that after weeks, months of testing, tweaking, modifying, and working through bugs, that I took a mediocre phone with a crappy os on it and now finally have an amazing device that's better than anything else.
I show off this phone and even evo owners are jeleous of my rooted froto awesomeness...

Cool story Bro

I must agree with friedsushi87 I'm impressed with the brilliance of the developers. Never tried Android before and I'm disappointed that I'm enjoying it more than winmo [other than battery life]. Doesn't seem far away for devs to perfect Android on HD2

i totally agree
the hd2 was my first mobile, and i never tought that it would be so much fun !
great thanks to the devs and the cooks !

Totally agree with you OP. A cool device is a cool device. It becomes something more when you can hook up with a great website and forum that work to make it better. There is a certain satisfaction that comes with hacking your device, especially when you are a part of the community.

I hear you out man, I feel the same way too

Im glad OP is happy and all, but really any need to open a whole thread?!

I'm glad I got the HD2 & not the EVO simply because you can do more with the HD2. Nobody's gonna port WM for any Android phone, but we get the best of both worlds

Hopefully Android will be ported over to it when the HTC Evo 4g comes out right? I would kill for that phone
Any opinions as I am making this decision soon...
Greatest hardware in the world is still crap if it's crippled with WM 6.5.
Android was ported but not to the American Version. It probably won't be a long wait though.

I lied. Don't listen to me, I have no life. I listen to KanYe West. But they have ported it onto the other models of the HD2.
Your better off getting a WMP7, the UI is great and reminds me of my Zune HD. I like winmo, iphone os, and now android too

Why not just get a GN1? Its a better phone and has the benefit of coming with android 2.1 and not giving a single penny over to evilMS.

Yeah it reminds me of the Zune HD, but as a phone I think the OS is a stupid design. It doesn't seem fluid at all. This, of course, is coming from someone who hasn't had first hand experience. I have only seen videos, and of those videos, I am not impressed.

Ditto. I've never liked Windows Mobile. Symbian was way better than it, and I have to say, Android has blew symbian out of the water now. But didn't xda port android to it? Meh, I've never been a fan of ports, either. Here's what I'm doing: waiting till an upgrade period and if there's any whispers of a phone after the N1, I'll just wait for it and get that.
I have been lurking awile and I wanted to give opinion on the hd2 because I was in the same sitiaution when the hd2 came out. I was following the hd2 since october. And I was e excited about it. I was at the store early got it and I returned it the next day. I have been using a G1 since it came and then played around with a jailbroken and unlocked iphone and the hd2 was terrible. The. Phone itself is gorgeous but once you get over the bells and whistles its not user friendly and it locked up on me 5 times the period I had it.. I am just sticking to my G1 until somethin better comes out I cam say I prefer my rooted eclair G1 over the hd2 and the only other phone I would replace my g with now would an N1 but I don't want to pay the hefty price tag. I know you can flash the hd2 and all that but I don't like the idea of flashing a phone just to get it to work but rather flash, root, jailbreak to make it better. My G1 works fine out the box but its totally different. Beast when you root it.. aside from the freezing issues with the hd2, its just not. User friendly and the phone quality is terrible imo. You can get one for yourself but I would stick with my trusty g1..

Do you have the link?
I had a G1 and now have a HD2. I love the hardware and the winmo is just okay. My phone works great and the screen is awesome.
I do miss my G1. Everyone who likes winmo says it is great for business users. I am just an average user and miss my android apps. I played euchre on my G1 and the only euchre game I can find for winmo is $12.99. Not near as many apps and not many free apps.
I am patiently waiting for android to be ported to the HD2. There are no working ports of android on the HD2 so far. As is says in the previous post they have android ported to a winmo phone. But if you read the thread on XDA, the android port for the HD2 is really not even close.
Don't know about everyone else, but I bought the G1 at launch (10-24-08) and my contract won't be up until November.
I'm hoping for some good Win 7 phones by that time, with a physical keyboard.

i have to say.... im waiting for ANY good phone with a keyboard. companies seem to be stuck on touchscreen as most people like it because it's "sooo cool." cool as it is, it's a pain in the end. my main issue is the lag of the keyboard... it can't keep up with me! at least physical seems to NEVER lag unless the actual phone itself is encountering a laggy moment.

Should I get an HD2

I currently have a Samsung galaxy s and I'm pretty happy with it, but at the same time the development for it is starting to bore me, IV realised this is because I'm getting a bit bored with android in general. I just want a bit of a change and nothing really offers that more that the hd2 and its abilities to run 5 different operating systems. But ofcouse to get one I will need to sell my galaxy s to raise the money. I was just wondering if anyone thought this is a good idea?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using my thumbs
I would get the HD2, the samsung galaxy has a better screen as in quality and detail but I like the flexibility of the HD2. Plus it all has to do preference. Its what you LIKE and WANT. Do some research (it already looks like it) and I'm sure you'll realize what you want
yes, because at least you can generate a bit profit from selling galaxy s to buy a hd2, lol.
Anyway, about 5 OS on hd2, don't expect too much!!! Only wm6.5 and android are quite stable at the moment.
WP7? it seems ok with some people now, but when M$ announces wp7's update (very soon indeed), who knows what will happen???
Meego: it's so lagging and some developers have just left that project.
Ubuntu: how much time did you spend with ubuntu on your laptop?
So moving to hd2 because of android while you already have very good one? Or do you want to try the last decade's wm6.5?
I understand what you mean about the is situation bit at the same time, from what I gather, the development scene will continue for a long time on the hd2, whereas the galaxy can only go so far, and if I must confess I'm a bit of flash junkie so hd2 will keep me plenty entertained

One of my friends came round with a SGS, and I was quite impressed with the screen, and the overall responsiveness, but as a fellow flash junkie, I would recommend sawing off ur sgs in two, selling one part, and buying half a hd2, and gluing them together.
If that's not an option for u, go with the HD2

It quite responsive as long as you a good lag fix, otherwise it runs like crap, I think im gonna get a hd2, now I just have to tell my girlfriend that I don't want the phone I moaned about for like a month. Ill let you know how I do.... if I survive :/

Well, if you really like hd2, go on then! I've moved from motorola miletone to blackberry, then htc mozart, finally hd2 now, never ever regret it! 4.3 inches screen is great and always fits my palm.
But in case u feel like "uhm ..uhm maybe hd2 a good choice but...uhm...not sure though...", my advice is sticking with ur current one, as I know that galaxy s is very good as well!
About the flexibility in flashing roms on hd2, to be honest, i was just excited in first few days, and then realised that i can't have enough time to follow every single rom updated daily by hundreds developers, so i chose one rom working fine for me (even bugs still occur) and dont care about anything else!

I'm sure galaxy development will go on as long as the hd2.... the galaxy s series in general is a much more popular series of phones and there are more galaxy s users than hd2 users, so development will go on. But the HD2 is a great phone for being able to run multiple os's... I love being able to dual-boot with WP7 on my main memory and running android off my sd card... both are running very well. Let me warn you, though... the battery life on the wp7 and android ports are not nearly as good as native phones. You'll have to charge your phone twice as much. It can be hard to get a full day out of a charge if you use your phone a decent amount. I recommend getting a spare battery or an external backup battery if you use your phone a lot.
nope !! get a n0kia 3310 !
If what you want to tinker around with your phone, try out stuff every day or two, and I mean literally, then by all means, the HD2 is your phone. However take note, as said above, only android and winmo work "perfect" and the others are a bit iffy.
Nobody knows what will happen to WP7 on the HD2 once that update hits, and it sounds very grim in my opinion. WP7 on the HD2 has problems also, you can read up on the problems in our porblem thread in our HD2 WP7 Q&A dedicated forum.
Ubuntu is not a fun ride on the HD2 either, since despite the 4.3" screen, it's still too small for the OS.
MeeGo seems to be coming along but I don't expect it to reach the stability of android on our HD2's, any time soon.
So think about what you want first. If you wants a phone that works great for what it has, then the galaxy s is your phone. However if you want to tinker,, the HD2 is your phone. Just know, the HD2 while very well rounded, does not excell in one OS.
i am also thinking of buying an HD2... is an in-depth comparison between android HD2 and Desire? battery life? performance? etc...

If you just want to run android, you'd be better off with a native android phone... you get much better battery life with use on a native phone. But the hd2 makes a good android phone for the price, but you will have to put time and work into learning how to set it up and work past any bugs to get it running good. One positive about the hd2 is you can run windows on it too if you don't mind running android off sd card.

i don't mind having windows mobile on it... having multiple OSes sounds exciting... was reading that with the latest nand android, battery life improved but is it still that far away from a native android phone like u r saying?
Hey there.
I have a Galaxy S, rooted, modified to the max, tried out most of the roms, kernels and so on.
Just last week i found out that HD2 is capable of Win7 AND Android. At first it felt like a stupid idea, HD2 is too old.
After some research, youtube and XDA I have decided. Tomorrow afternoon some guy comes home to me and make the switch.
A larger screen, multi-OS and the fun of changing phones is my reasons
You will see more of me in this part of XDA
Please forgive my bad english!

If you keep your wireless off and keep battery eating things off during standby, you can get ok standby battery life, but its nothing like a native phone. During actual use of the phone, battery drains fast. A few hours of use will kill your battery... an hour of using xda app will take 25% off my battery. My brother has a galaxy s series phone, and his battery will easily last 2-3 times what mine will last of actual use.

Atrix vs Bootloader issue ...

My iPhone 3GS is dead, time for an upgrade, wanted to jump in the Android world, I found the spec of the Atrix really interesting but the Bootloader issues is really turning me off ... There is usually so much cool stuff out with new ROMS ... I also tend to stay has far has I can from Carrier's crap, so with that bootloader restriction it's pretty a dead project ATM ... I was wondering if we can hope anything in a short time frame (+- 6 months) ?
Thanks
I'm getting an Atrix soon and as excited as I am, I'd probably recommend getting a Nexus S or an HTC phone. You'll get the flagship Android experience with the Nexus S (or 4G if you can wait) or the HTC Sense experience which is what I originally thought Android was all about. With HTC phones though, if you want you can go with an ASOP ROM and go completely stock, or use the HTC Sense framework which really kicks the user experience up.
I'm a bit of a spec junkie but I surprisingly loved the Sense experience my HTC Desire Z provided me with. I previously owned a Sony Xperia X10 which disgusted me and really made my initial Android experience pretty sour.. missed out on Flash, missed out on updates, missed out on a ton of things and had lots of bugs. Stock Android or something HTC would probably be the way to go with the Atrix's bootloader uncertainty.
The devs on these boards are nothing short of amazing, but Motorola's really got this clamped down. I think being an Android virgin you could easily enjoy the Atrix, but stock Android and Sense are really awesome and I think everyone should experience it at least once.
I got an eLocity A7, I loved the snap of Tegra2 and Atrix specs looked really nice. I've been in the Windows Mobile 6 scene and always hated the junk carriers installed on cell phone. I always enjoyed Sense or Stock (6.5 at the time ...).
I'll stay away from Atrix until I see ROM devs ... the Desire HD seemed really nice but I'm also temped by the iPhone 4gs or 5 with the HTC Flyer combo =)
Thx for the input !

You can do just as much much with the atrix as you could with a jailbroken iphone. Coming from an iphone myself the bootloader is not a big deal. Everyone is jealous of my phone including all my iphone and evo friends. Opening up the bootloader would be extra icing on the cake.

haha that's a great analogy.
I am interested in the Atrix as well, when it comes out. However, I would be interested in flashing a stock gingerbread. As far as I understood the discussion here, the bootloader is closed, which means, if I understand correctly, will avoid the installation of another rom, won't it?

Yeah this really is in the wrong area but I must agree that this is the greatest all around phone ever created. Two years later it is still going strong, eventually it will not be able to compete with newer phones as more cores are added and Android & WP7 evolves but for right now we are still relevent.
Thanks to XDA for extending the life of HTC's greatest achievment as well as all the older devices that are still supported.

Well this not courtesy HTC but the Awesome Dev's here on XDA
Yes it's awesome and its already an "old" phone but it's still as good as the newer phones

i agree 100%. I have choosen it because it had the biggest screen and thanks to great people on this forum(replaced winmo with android) I now have the best phone.
I have it for about a year and people around me bought newer phones, but they still envy my phone. I think its really hard to be happy these days as commercials pump our brains with irrelevant data...
Yea, agreed! I was deciding on an iPhone 3GS and HTC HD2 when I went to sign up for a mobile contract a year and a half ago, glad I took up the HD2 and never looked back.
I love to HTC HD2. and its always best ... even their are lots of new smart phones in the market...
Agreed with everything on this thread (... best phone ... wrong thread etc). If I could add anything to my phone, it would be HDMI-out, but that's only really as a novelty feature rather than something I would use often.
I really can't see myself upgrading until my HD2 breaks or something truly revolutionary comes along. Dual-core may be it, but I have no reason to upgrade until they are either a bit cheaper or better utilised.
I really hope the phone remains powerful enough for Ice Cream Sandwich and newer Senses, because it's truly wonderful hardware.
HTC needs to improve it with the front face camera ...etc and make a HD3
Front camera would be great, but i want better main camera.
My HD2 still gives me much L.O.V.E and now with Android on it shiiiiiit
Peace

Simply the best!!!!
i dont even want a dual core processor. the only thing i want to be better on my phone is the digitizer, and the screen.
rly, the glitchy multitouch and touchdelay pisses me off in games.. i want a fast touchscreen like newer devices ;(
but thats the only point..
HTC should make a phone especially for XDA. the HD2 XDA edition!!! with something like the same hardware as the sensation has, just in a HD2 body.. <3

My goodbyes.

I am sure none of you really know me but I have been around for awhile, first came here with an HTC Touch, loaded up window mobile roms and hacks.
Tested roms here and there for winmo 6.5 and android for the vogue, disappeared after downgrading to a blackberry then I came back when I got my HTC Hero.
I have posted few but learned alot, enough to run a small little gig of phone modifications on top of my freelance computer engineering. I have recently obtained an Evo Shift after my mom used my upgrade so I used my dads. After chopping off sense and enjoying the amazing performance of this 2nd Gen processor I have to say goodbye to this Hero forum and move onto the Shift as my new home.
I will probably be in and our picking up roms for my dad and running to the evo 3D for my mom but that's about it.
Sorry if this is a "who are you" kind of outting, just felt like saying goodbye :] take care.
Hey, we all move on pimpin. Just keep being active in the forums and we're all bound to come across each other again; like how most of us did in the Evo 3D forum.

I will probably be in and our picking up roms for my dad and running to the evo 3D for my mom but that's about it.
Sorry if this is a "who are you" kind of outting, just felt like saying goodbye :] take care.

It's the sense of connection and togetherness that makes our Hero CDMA forums so great. We have such an active and friendly community that rivals other forums. Just take a look at the Evo 3D forums and look at the chaos, disorganization, and swarm of noobs DEMANDING stuff. I know when I move into the Evo 3D forums, I'm still gonna come back and help my fellow heroc members. Have fun!
I am still running through these forums looking at what's new, sad thing is we are getting a large amount of new shift owners since bestbuy made it free for upgrade. They are all bugging us about rooting 2.3 which is currently not available but hopefully Revolutionary fixes this so they can stop filling up the sections.

Yeah lol, the hero has a bunch of old school people on our forums. A whole bunch of those new phones are attracting people who don't know what they're doing as rooting is becoming more popular.

And they think its as simple and safe as jailbreaking. They need to learn about ADB and the other little goodies before rooting, maybe even a little common sense. Too many one click root babies.

Who remembers rooting by ADB?

I did my rooting Christmas day and loaded up aosp's gingerbread back before anything really worked. Then to his 2.2 ROM until 2.3 got more stuff. Good times.
