How can you confirm on the x7501 whether you are running:
gsm
umts
3g
hsdpa
I am getting the H icon, but I don't think my speeds are matching that.
Thanks
kww
You can check here, but it may also depend on what part of the world you're in, whether or not this test will be accurate. I get excellent results on it in Lexington, Kentucky USA...
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
Thanks, it didn't work on Netfront, but did on Opera.
I got 775 kbit/sec
that sounds like HSDPA speeds at minimum, doesn't it?
Yeah, that's fast enough to call HSDPA. I hadn't noticed your American flag & AT&T icons before (don't ask me how...). I'm also on AT&T, but usually use my home wifi and keep my sim in an Ipaq HW6515a for everyday phone. Wifi is over 1100, usually. The x7501 isn't so fun to use as a phone, especially when I work in a rough environment and have to worry about dropping or breaking it..
That's the average speed I get on Mobile Speed Test, with radio 1.58 and 3G/H. I've gotten as high as around 1000 but that's rare. On Edge I never got above 150, and on older radios never much above 500 on 3G/H.
Happily, I no longer suffer on Edge at home! As of a week ago they enabled 3G/H in my county and the county to the east of mine, to the PA/MD line. Their coverage viewer doesn't even show this change yet. It shows 3G stopping about 10-15 miles north of Baltimore, but I can verify it goes all the way north until you cross into PA. I haven't seen any news or notification that this was going to (or did) happen, so maybe they are quietly and quickly rolling their whole network over to 3G?
First, for anyone interested in the subject here is a little list of threads I found discussing the subject:

As you can see, there seems to be a lot of contradictory information from seemingly knowledgeable people.
My goal is to find a way to get the X1i on Rogers' 850 band they use in most places where they advertise 3G coverage. This might also be beneficial to some AT&T users as I believe they use the same bands.
I live in a suburb of Montreal. I never get anything better than EDGE and same goes when I am in class on the island of Montreal. However, when I go out once in a while and end up in downtown, in my drunken stupor I notice a little 3G symbol where the E used to be... Ha! My guess is that Rogers is using 850MHz all over the place and 1900MHz downtown. It would make more sense because '850' is better for covering vast areas that aren't so populated and '1900' is better at covering densely populated areas (downtown!).
My phone uses the Sony Ericsson supplied ROM for UK (OEM R3..) with a the 1.17 radio found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565182 .
Here's something I discovered that triggered the spark:
-press the call button (get to the dialer)
-press menu (bottom right)
-options
-band
I am now presented with a box to chose my GSM/UMTS band:
"Auto"
"GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100+900)"
"GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)"
"UMTS(2100)"
UMTS 1900 and 850?? Well well well...
Okay...still EDGE... Another phone (Samsung) supplied by Rogers has 3G right beside me.
Come on people, this really shows that the ROM is intended for a quad band phone. Plus there was a thread that I cannot find anymore with posted PDF's of the phone's chipset specs and it mentioned nothing of the phone being physically different between the X1i and X1a in terms of networking...
I really want to get the ball rolling on this because I have yet to see any solid proof that the X1i cannot do UMTS 850.
you sir, are my savior. thank you for posting and starting this thread. i myself have an X1i in the states and have been reading and reading about this for months on end with lots of conflicting information.
i can connect to HSDPA and Edge network, but never 3G. ONE TIME i saw the 3G logo for about 2 seconds, then it switched over to HSDPA...... i just can't stand the super duper slow edge network
but HSDPA is faster than 3g is it not??

correct, but HSDPA doesn't cover everywhere. in some deadspots i'm only on Edge, and i always wonder if i could get 3G instead.....
@ Jonny4911 : HSDPA IS TO 3G what EDGE is to GPRS...that's a good analogy I can think of. Yes, it is faster than regular 3G.
@ asayamalaka : If you have HSDPA, you shouldn't be worrying about 3G Or maybe you meant something else? This little utility should tell you about your connection speed (just type in the address in your phone's browser) : http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
Until the devs / savvy guys and girls chime in, it would help a lot if anyone can contribute more interesting links to this thread. I am particularly looking for the those PDF's from Qualcomm but I can't find them anymore...

Hannigan is right with this link, in that you cannot force the X1i to use HSDPA/HSPA+ on the 850mhz band, because it is not in the hardware. With all of the knowledgeable people out there, if it was possible to change it by flashing/hacking/etc., then it would have been done by now. I don't believe that we'll see 850mhz HSPA+ on our X1i's.
That being said, I myself have noticed my lil' ol' X1i receiving the "H" symbol while in the boonies (far away from the downtown core). I believe this is because there have been reports that Rogers is ramping up their support for HSPA+ on the 1900mhz band, in preparation for the Olympics out west. If this is the case, then the ODD time that your phone does not find the 850mhz band (or 1900mhz is more prevalent/strong), then it will hop on that frequency and you'll be able to use HSDPA.
What I was looking for, was not a hack to enable 3G on the X1i's 850mhz band, but rather some kind of "band preference" setting where you could force phone to look for and connect to the 1900mhz band over the 850mhz band (or even disable 850mhz all together, but that might give us less reception). As far as I know (and have been hunting the net), this isn't quite possible.
I am thinking that our (well, specifically mine because of where I live), only hope is that if Rogers continues to grow their 1900mhz network which supports HSDPA, and hopefully our X1i's will choose that network over the 850mhz one. My only worry with this is that the phone might see both frequencies, and pick the 850mhz one because it has more penetration in densely packed areas, making it the primary choice for the phone (since the 1900mhz signal would probably be weaker).
Anyways, I'm speculating a bit, as well as reporting the facts that I've heard from users on this forum and others (HowardForums has a topic open as well).
Let's hopefully continue to keep this thread going as a base reference for our issue here, because getting 3G/HSDPA on our X1i's would SIGNIFICANTLY improve our usability!
@andreitu just to clear one thing up for you, the X1i is a quad band phone, however the quad band is only in reference to GSM bands and does not apply to UMTS bands. The X1i is only Tri band UMTS...
To anyone getting the HSDPA in the US with an X1i, it's because the area you are in is served by a UMTS 1900 enabled cell. (i'm in dallas and am almost always on HSDPA on AT&T)...
Also to answer another point which was raised in both in this thread and in this one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4373262#post4373262
On AT&T you will almost neevr see just a 3G connection, since AT&T has performed an upgrade t all base stations that enables HSDPA for 3G - so that everyone gets the fast speed possible when connected to 3G...!

It wasn't just a link, I was quoting myself. It was a link to something I already said in another thread that covered the EXACT same thing.
Maybe I have been here too long, but I am starting to get irritated by seeing the same questions numerous times. I will at least give the thread starter some credit for showing an attempt to look at other threads first, but please do multiple google searches related to your subject before starting a thread.
This question was asked a lot when the phone was new. The 1900/850 option in Phone Settings is just a hardcoded dropdown. It does not magically enable WCDMA on 850MHz on the X1i, the hardware cannot do it.
You can receive 1900MHz signals because the X1i is tri-band 900/1800/2100 (even though the drop down does not indicate so).
In future, please, for the love of god, use search!

Which is ironic since the iPhone 3GS is HSPA (7.2Mbps) capable...lol. HSPA is fast though. I regularly get between 1.5Mbps and 2.2Mbps here in Raleigh, NC.
I've seen that there's a LOT of confusion over the different data connection speeds.
I've seen a lot of comments with people asking why they keep getting a 'H' symbol like it's a bad thing, so here's a basic run-down:
GPRS: 56Kbit/s
EDGE: 236.8 kbit/s
UMTS: 384 kbit/s
HSDPA: 14,400 kbit/s - 14.4 Mb/s (only in certain places in England, blanket 7.2 Mb/s for Three UK)
GSM isn't included because it can't be used for data transfer, this is usually when the signal bar is shown, with nothing else.
2G:
GPRS is pretty negligible, I'd know I get stuck with it all the time in my house. It can load web pages but pretty slowly. This is shown on the N1 with a G next to the signal bar.
EDGE is still 2G but is multiple 2G connections combined. Here's a definition from soul2soul from a quick Google search:
"EDGE is part of GPRS network. During idle state, you will be given 1 timeslot only which is GPRS speed. When you start to download, you will be given more timeslots, hence you notice the sudden increase of speed to EDGE. If you are have lots of data users, you might be given only 1 timeslot. THis way, you might not hit the 220kbps speed consistently. Besides, Edge ping is quite horrible around 450-550 ms at first hop.
3G on the other hand, to my experience, consistentlys hit the 384kbps. It is sort like a guarantee pipeline for you. Of course, the latency is much lower at 150ms to 200ms."
This is shown by an E next to the signal bar.
3G:
UMTS is faster than EDGE but is still nowhere near HSDPA. As explained above though, 3G is much more stable than EDGE so you will get a more reliable speed. This is shown by a 3G symbol next to the signal bar.
HSPDA Is the good one. This one supports up to 14.4MB/s. This is shown by a H symbol (on certain ROM's) next to the signal bar.
Personally, I love knowing when I get HSPDA over UMTS since there could be a whole 7Mb/s difference on Three UK, for example; 14Mb/s on Vodafone (some places).
Feel free to comment on any faults and I'll correct them. I did this very quickly
Someone care to comment on LTE?
This post triggered me to try running a speed test on my N1 out of pure curiosity. I am using the speedtest.net app from the marketplace.
N1 status shows: HSPA
Server: New York, NY
My location: Midtown west manhattan, 12th floor of an office building
Ping: 109ms
Down: 1656 kbps
Up: 1286 kbps
HSDPA can range from just faster than 3G speeds to 14.4 Mb/s. Keep in mind it depends on how many people are connected to the cell (since it's the max bandwidth distributed between how many people connect to each basestation), and also the max bandwidth of the Basestation. If no one else is connecting to your basestation then it looks like it's limited to 1.8Mb/s. But i'm not sure on the specs of other basestations aside from the UK, so I could be wrong.
I would also like to add that HSPA is JUST a data service where 3G carries both data and voice. Quite a few people on here seem to be confused when they see their phone switch back and fourth from 3G to HSPA and they ask why its going back and fourth. It is because you phone will only use the HSPA services for data and then switch back to 3G when idle and not doing data.
Oh, and lets not forget HSPA+, currently launched on T-Mobile USA in Philidalphia, which has theoretical speeds of 56Mbps down.

Anyone know what happens when a call comes in if you're using HSPA, for example downloading a large file?
I've gotten speeds of around 600-700kbps on UMTS pretty consistently here in Toledo... are you sure it's max speed is only half that?
I rarley get good speeds anywhere here (California). The best i can muster up is 700k down and up. :-/
Please take note that the Nexus One, as most other mobile phones has a official maximum bandwidth of 7.2 MBps using HSDPA, not the full 14.4 MBps.
Quote:
google.com/phone
Cellular & Wireless
UMTS Band 1/4/8 (2100/AWS/900)
HSDPA 7.2Mbps
HSUPA 2Mbps
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
25th Feb in Waitrose (** a supermarket **) car-park in Wokingham, Engerland @ 10:33am [waiting for the wife] download 3922Kbps, upload 1673Kbps, (Speedtest), 'phone status switching between UMTS & HSDPA.
At home some 5 miles away usually download about 1.4Mbps: When I'm back in God's ain country (bonnie Scotland, the Highlands,..) I'll try again...
& If the 'phone was normal way up (therefore aerial at the bottom... slightly behind car dash) I got a lower speed, turn N1 upside down and she goes faster ..
Anyone??
Cheers!

Actually, a correction to the previous. You see, HSPA is just an enhancement of UMTS. To say 3G is VERY broad statement because pretty much all carriers have some sort of 3rd Generation technolocy in use on thier networks. Now, T-Mobile and ATT both use UTMS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Service) and to be specific they use W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access).
The quoted data speeds of 384Kbps are the theorecital max of R'99 (Revision "99). Moving on to R5 (Revision 5) incorporate HSDPA (High Speed Download Packet Access) with theorecial max download speeds of 14.4Mbps. Then there is R6 (Revision 6) which incorporates HSUPA (High Speed Upload Packet Access. I'm sorry I dont know the max theoretical upload speeds. Lastly we have HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Enhanced) which has theoretical download speeds of 54Mbps.
Now on to your quesiton, if you are reaching those speeds you are more than likely on a HSPA network. If you are using an Eclair ROM your data symbol next to your signal strength will NOT switch from 3G to H. Its not built into the rom. If you are using a Desire ROM you will see this happen.
Here is another way to check, start downloading a large file (to give yoruself time) then back out and let it download in the background. Open your dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* then select phone info. Scroll down and look at network type. It will either say UMTS or HSPA. Make sure when your viewing it that there is data going in the background.
A quicker way to get to the Phone Info is to download/install Anycut and create a shortcut on your desktop for Phone Info.
Hope this helps.
You guys are incredibly knowledgeable! I have been extremely curious as to what HSPA+ was exactly, thank you for explaining it!
I do have a few questions:
1. With HSPA+ on the horizon for T-Mobile (US), what frequencies will be used to broadcast?
2. Will the freq be the same as UMTS?
3. Will devices like the HD 2 be able to utilize the new network (if not will a simple radio ROM fix that?)
Thanks for the explaination,as I was wondering what this ment as well..
My UMTS/3G speed too high?
There's a device that I'm interested in that will only do Edge. I wanted to see if I could tolerate the reduced speed and found this thread stating connection speeds. When I select "use only 2g networks" I connect at about half the max you state for Edge...which sounds about right. But, when I connect 3G (with my 3G phone), my DL speed is about 2.5Mb/s or 2500Kb/s, almost 7x as fast as the 384Kb/s stated here for max 3G. Could somebody please explain to me how I'm looking at things the wrong way? Thanks.
Because by "3G" the setting you're switching means "3G and up". To reach those speeds your phone is switching to HSDPA mode, which on Nexus One is limited to 7.2 Mbps, and you're still far below that limit.

Thanks for that. But bear w/me for just one more sec; I'm a relative newby. Let me see if I understand. With my 3G Huawei Comet in hotspot mode and a netbook connected to Speedtest.net thru the hotspot, I'm getting a download thruput of 7X 3G speed and 1/3 4G speed. If this is right, since I don't think I could expect to reach the maximum 4G speed with an actual 4G phone but maybe more like 1/2 4G speed, since I'm getting close to that (1/3 4G) miraculously I think, (especially since that was at 2 of 4 bars), I think I shouldn't waste my time and money ever upgrading to a 4G phone; I should stick w/my miraculous little 3G Comet. Please let me know; is all this right? Thanks for any more help.
Is my connection way faster than my device is supposed to be capable of?
Sorry for repeating myself but I didn't get a reply and I really need an answer.
With my 3G Huawei Comet in hotspot mode and a netbook connected to Speedtest.net thru the hotspot, my DL speed is about 2.5Mb/s which is almost 7 times as fast as the 384Kb/s I read is supposed to be the max for 3G. My signal indicator does show the H for HSDPA (2 bars) so since my connection is SO much faster than the max for 3G, and squarely in the realm of 4G speeds considering 2 bars (about 1/3 the max for 4G), is my Ideos/Comet somehow doing 4G? Thanks for clarifying for me.
Does anyone here have an HD2 with stock TMO USA ROM in one of TMO's HSPA+ coverage areas? Does the signal indicator remain 3G, or does it switch to the H icon?
I'm not asking for users of cooked ROMs, since we all know the icons can differ depending on what the chef choose to use on their ROM.
i'm in the 904, and mine switches between 3g and h. if i'm in the living room, it stays on h, in the bedroom 3g.

My connection icon goes back and forth between 3G and H a lot, usually flipping to H whenever I connect and am actively passing data, then back to 3G when the connection is on but idle.
I am using a stock ROM, but...I'm using aftermarket taskbar icons for notifications like that. I understand that the stock notification icons don't ever seem to switch to H, only once you have some non-stock icons there does that happen. I don't remeber mine ever switching before I added the new icons.
Honestly though I don't think it does much more right now than let you know you've got a HSPA+ capable link between you and the tower...but from what I've read T-mobile still hasn't yet flipped the switch on the backhaul elements (from the tower to the network) on most of the towers that are ready for it.
EDIT: Also, have you made sure that you have HSDPA enabled in your phone settings?
I am also in Jacksonville Florida (904) I have a cooked ROM, there is a huge difference between the two. So trust me when I say the towers around here are very much active.

Ok awesome then. I'd heard they were still dragging their feet on it, but a small number of places were already feeling the joy

Actually I was digging on this a little more, and saw a thread on ppcgeeks about it that you had posted in lol.
Reading that and some others, it seems that there's a bit of confusion (I was too)...what Tmo has already enabled on the network now is HSPA 7.2, which is not exactly the same thing as the HSPA+ (theoretical limits over 54Mbps). HSPA+ is what's being tested and exists in a few cities now, more coming 2nd half of this year.
I've read confirmation that the HD2 is HSPA 7.2-capable, but I've found nowhere that says for sure that it's able to use HSPA+...lot's of speculation, no hard confirmation. I have however seen several indications that no phones in Tmo's current lineup have the HSPA+ secret sauce
Yeah ive also read that the radio in the HD2 is only HSPA 7.2, here's hoping that at least the the HSPA+ roll out will allow us to make full use of the 7.2 megabits it can pull down.
Question though, if TMO's tower radios are software updatable to HSPA+ then why couldn't the HD2 or any other phone's radio be software updatable to HSPA+ as well?

is the 560kbps in your sig what you're regularly seeing on TMO up there in Jacksonville? cause i don't have much trouble hitting a megabit per second at times here in Tampa.
I hate living in Utah. We are always the last to get these fast speeds.
i live in long beach, ca. and work at the port of los angeles. in these areas, i get a mixture of edge, 3g, and HSPA.
Specifically, I get a mixture of Edge and HSPA here at home. I get mostly HSPA when I'm driving outside the house locally.
I get mostly HSPA and a little 3g mixture at work.
I get a good mix of H, 3G and E in my area....im in Jersey..less than 10 minutes from NYC
Weird thing is i was getting HSPA (The H symbol on the signal strength thingy) since a month back. I am in the 818 area (Los Angeles - The valley)
im in the philadelphia market area where it started and with the shipped rom my device was in 3g mode all the time didnt notice that it was on h mode till i put on a cooked rom now i never see the 3g icon its always in h but the 3g will come and go to h as it pleases depending on location and if the hspa covers that area
Guys there is a difference between HSPA+ and HSDPA/HSUPA..
HSDPA/HSUPA is capable of maximum speeds of 7.2 mbps, but HSPA+ is theoretically capable of maximum speeds of 56 mbps, ofcourse us end users never see anything near the maximum. Optimistically it should increase the AVERAGE throughput or download speed for us on HSDPA as the backend at the cell towers will have much more capabilities.

Very true, and commonly confused by many.
Although HSPA7.2 is technically already available in all of T-Mobile's existing 3G markets, like inf3rno said those with compatible handsets (HD2, etc) probably won't see everything it can deliver until the HSPA+ capable backend is turned up on your local towers.

I too am keeping my eyes open for a more solid answer to that question. The most believeable-sounding one I've seen so far indicates that NO current hardware is HSPA+ capable (including the HD2), not until certain new models are released later this year (and no, I didn't see any sign of which exact ones will have that).
So, I'm expecting to not fully benefit from HSPA+ (as opposed to HSPA7.2)....but I could certainly be wrong, and would love it if I were!
7.2 is fine with me. 21 or less would be great, but can't get everything. Besides, i would not expect to reach anywhere near 21 megs down. Or i won't believe it until i see proof or see it in person. lol.
I'm in NYC, have HD2 stock rom pluse cookies home tab.
i did mobile speed test, and speedtest . i get 1847kbps down and 650kbps up. ive never seen a H on my handset but i get faster then hspda speeds. the other night i got 9 mbps down and 4mbps up.
For those who live in an area with HSPA+, I was wondering if it would show an H for HSPA+ (like e for edge, E for EDGE, 3G for well...,) on the stock ROM. Because I live in Los Angeles and it looks like T-Mobile is finally rolling out HSPA+ out here in their latest press release and would like to know what connection my phone is using. (Current ROM/Radio in my sig.)
I think you would have to load a custom rom or cab file for that. I still use the stock rom as well and only see 3g here in Tampa. Try doing a search.
i have a question live in nj and i know that hspa is in ny. i just did a speed test at speakeasy.net/speedtest and i got 3.29mbps download and 1.14 mbps upload. sorry i am a noob when it comes to this is this any good. not to mention tmo hasnt announced hspa in nj
i am also interested in knowing if angone does get an h cuz i only see 3g

Im in Tampa, one of the markets just officially announced as having HSPA+. HSPA+ was actually turned on here in Tampa last week. I had a Tmobile sales rep visit the company I work for yesterday and he confirmed it was turned on last Wed, I noticed the speed bump last Thur
However the indicator still shows 3g
I love how fast I can upload full 5mpix images to twitpic now, used to have to sit and twiddle my thumbs for about a minute or two. They seem to upload in about 30 seconds now. That was how I noticed the speed upgrade last Thur, I was literally like WTF an image has never uploaded that quick.

The stock tmo ROM won't display an "H"...you'll have to install one of the many available custom taskbar icon sets for it to show that. However, I have yet to see any confirmation that having the "H" displayed on your taskbar means anything other than just the fact your connection (i.e. your closest tower) is capable of HSPA7.2 or better...regardless of whether it has the backhaul connection to support it or not.
And since my first Energy rom 2 1/2 months ago it's switched between 3G and H all the time, way before HSPA+. Now speed is the only gauge to know if I have HSPA+ or just HSPA.
I'm currently just out of HSPA+ range north of Seattle... 2 miles south I get 5.7mbps speedtests, at home still suffer with 900kbps even with H and 4 bars showing.

I am going to guess that the ROMs that differentiate between 3G and H are probably showing 3G for UMTS and H for HSPA/HSPA+
so my hspa speeds are all over the place one Minute they are below 500kb/s the next they are over 2000kbs .. odd i say

Mine seem pretty consistently in the 2mbit download 1mbit upload, but ive seen spikes as high as 5mbit for download. probably all depends on how good the signal is in your area and the load on the cell tower that you are on.
That's what I was figuring sirphunkee (outside of just downloading a icon set to show H). Thanks all for your answers guys.
