I just got a OTA system update within about 20 minutes of having the Epic on!
It states its a update to add Amazon MP3 (BLARGH ) and other system tweaks.
Can i still root after this update?
*shakes magic 8 ball*
Sources seem to point to yes.
Try going to the android development forum for the epic 4g, people are saying the update doesn't affect ability to root, but it is still a small number of people. It might be safer to wait.

Ah I was assuming it wouldn't affect rooting, but I don't really care to do a update just to get amazon mp3.
How do we tell if we have the update? My kernel is version 2.6.29 and my build number is Samsung ECLAIR.DG27.
I have root. I have that silly update.

What Samsung code name is displayed under Settings -> About Phone -> Baseband version before and after any OTA update? It is probably a 9-character alphanumeric string.
For those who have gotten the update: Do the "other system tweaks" fix the screen timeout issue people are reporting?

Any idea if the OTA update fixes the Sprint Hotspot hole? Currently I can use the hotspot feature without any special subscription. My feeling is the OTA update may interfere with that.
However, I am having HORRIBLE battery life, with 4-5 hours light usage on a full charge before it asks me to plug in. Perhaps the update will improve my battery life?

how will us with wifi only get this?
Any update is good news at this point I think. I wonder if there is any harm in updating, ie will it remove the ability to root and what not? I wish they would provide more details on what exactly the patch does. Also, it clearly says on the Verizon network, what about those not on it and are only on wifi?

MY droid always popped up updates even when I was only on wifi. I imagine we'll all get it or someone will post the update.zip anyway.
I'm curious if the Tegra 2 versions of flash (10.1) floating around will have something to interact with, and start functioning. They have with everything else. As soon as I get the OTA (no 3G), I have a folder full of them in my Dropbox.

yesssssssssssss
Glad to see an update but there is nothing listed to get excited about except a possible problem with the upcoming daylight savings time switch. Who cares about the flash update since it does not actually include it. But this will be a good test run to see how the updates are sent out and applied.

You can force a check by rebooting. Not the best method, but it works.
Why do unlocked xooms need to get relocked?
I understand why you need to be on stock boot.img but i don't understand why you need to have the device relocked to get the update.
It makes no sense.

According to the system update tab this didn't happen in 3 reboots since the announcement. Still last check at 5:20. Really want to see if any of the 10.1 Tegra versions work after this. I've been frantic to have Flash lately (PlayOn/Netflix).

It might have a minimum time between checkins. Mine said 9:20am, then showed current time for last checkin when I rebooted.
So would it be fair to say that those of us who have rooted should wait until this update is released to see if in fact we really do need to revert back to stock/locked condition? Because I'd really be pissed if we had to lose all of the data on our Xooms just for this update, when very few of us have actually changed anything with the boot.img, etc. I mean back when I first rooted my N1 but before I flashed custom ROMs, I never had to wipe back to stock to receive OTA updates, so why would that be the case here??

Got it thanks!
Now will this new update let me route my EVO without that bootloader lock?
Anyone confirm if the hboot changing is effecting root?
I rather not update to test it, so we will probably have to wait for someone that has updated to see if they can get s-off
I would also be cautious with it. It comes with new hboot and the ROMs(in dev section) looks like they didn't remove the new hboot. It will lock the bootlader (s-on).
So I am thinking. I am s off. I was stock, unrooted, and did the update. had stock recovery. Now if it is a new hboot, I should have lost my s off, right?
I didn't still got it went and rooted after the update.
Hmm Any thoughts?
Seems from catching up, I would not lose s off.

Fellows,
According to this Engadget news, there is an incoming (minor) upgrade to fix wifi issues to our beloved NST:
Link
I hope it still is rootable. Multitouch maybe? USB host (we already have partial)?
I used my NST without registering for a week, and noticed the battery drain was huge.
Ever since I registered my device, the battery drain issue has gone.
I doubt that this update will fix the battery drain issue for non-registered devices. Why would they even bother for an update and give people a chance to not to register their devices ???

It'll still be rootable, short of them just being assholes and adding the same crap they did to Color and Tablet where you can only install stuff from B&N's Market (not likely due to the fact there is no financial gain from it) we'll just have to update framework.jar for market and we'll be good to go. Though uRamdisk might need to be updated to account for changes that may be made to init.rc.
As far as I remember, we didn't have much problem rooting with minor upgrade to 1.0.1, as it worked quite nicely with the original rooting (yours 1.6.24).
Let's hope this one follows suit.

So in going from 1.0 to 1.1, BN removed the hidden browser. I suspect that BN wants to limit hacking (and reduce returns) - so I have sent my "ota" on the air update field from "auto" to "manual.
I'll decide if I want to upgrade to 1.2 - not BN.
So last night I checked on kies for the rumored march 1 Ics update.. Instead It showed an update to lb 2. Either way I updated it.. N frankly I see no changes a such between la5 and lb 2.
Also what is the point in releasing two firmwares within 15 days when Ics is set to roll just around the corner! Samsung ahold rather relocate this workforce at ics visions and make it launch sooner. I've read around the forum and I read no complaints by anyone with la 5. Why release frequent minor updates when major is set to hit soon?

I think you are too optimistic about major ICS update soon.
Need not to have changes visual, if you want to say update means adding/removing application, then it is not true.
Have you marked what change in Modem?
How many application have change / modified for behaviour? there are lots of application have trigger with certain action, e.g. some application runs with connectivity change, power stat change and more. So that change log you can't see visually, but ultimately it improved android system performance, battery perfiormance, ROM management.
And yeah, all updates are voluntary.
Yeah also waiting for the official ics update.. But are a little pessimistic about the update happening soon.. I recall that samsungsaid that they first gona relesa the official for the sgs2 and after that to the note. And last info about the official update for sgs2 is set at Mars/may.. :/ i hope im wrong. .

While I empathize with your eagerness to get an ICS update (I myself am eager too) its too presuming to dismiss an update as pointless. I am sure there is more than what meets the eyes.

i see your point, however must add, it would be better if the updates were spaced evenly, in order to incorporate maximum changes in a single update. This would be better for both. the customer and samsung saving update related issues like say bricking... probably pointless is not the word..
and for ics, with la5 and lb2 rolling out at this time, i fear ics isnt gonna make it until next month.

"at this time" here this time is decided by us, not samsung, as samsung have never announce a date of release. You should not 'fear' but should 'strongly believe' that ICS for india is not on the way at least for couple of months.
Well Samsung is not updating all Notes, I am still on KKA/XEU - you guys should be happy to get official OTA update.

I agree. I dont think we will see a ICS upgrade in India before May-June 2012. If it happens by then, I will be happy.
Well you can't satisfy everyone. Too less updates ppl complain, too frequent updates ppl complain. I for one am happy there are more GB updates coming. Shows Samsung cares for their user base. Sure ics is coming but that doesn't mean they can't tweak GB more in the mean time. Btw Samsung never set a hard date for the arrival of isc, it's mostly fan speculation and I think your 1st of march was way too hopeful.
As the doc said, updating is optional and not forced upon at least

Not sure what you mean by "safe" but typically you just use Odin to flash full stock 5.1.1, do a factory reset in stock recovery afterwards and you're done.

Not really the place to discuss it so I'll keep it brief.
My girlfriend has a Nexus 5X. The phone is amazing, updates are quick and common. It operates perfectly on marshmallow with no noticeable issues. We live in bum**** and she still gets service wifi calling and texting is fine, and no contracts. We pay about 42 a month for hers with insurance.
Well one thing I noticed (not sure if it was this update or the last one) is that when you pick an application to use (like browser) it becomes the default. With the old OS it would ask you to use just once or make it the default. Arrgggg I prefer to pick the application as needed and not make it the actual default.

The MM update made this change to default app handling. I liked the old way too. Now if I want to change the default app I have to remember which app was set as default before I can make the change. Sometimes remembering which app was set as default isn't easy to do.
Deleted. Think was in wrong thread.
Been a long time sense I've posted anything in this forum.
I just went back to the Note 4 and did the MM update and have noticed a heavy draw on the battery compared to LP. Am wondering if letting it did cycle through a few time might correct the battery drain. Was on an iPhone for awhile, but for personal reasons came back android. Has anybody tried that yet. Have been temped to hard reset and start fresh to see if it fixes it.
This update has increased the battery draw on mine and it is running HOT! Need help.
