I for one think Sony is planning something big for the month of September... They have been awfully quiet about the imminent release of 2.1 for the X10
I just find it unusual that news on PSP and PS3 updates have been very quiet as well.
Do you think they will announce something big this September? Especially with Tokyo Gaming Show on September and the release of PSmove as well. Could they finally announce the PSP2 with android finally? or X10 finally being updated with 2.1 and connectivity with the Playstation family of products? Tokyo Game Show would be the perfect avenue I think especially with the X10 being the best selling handset in Japan.
Here is hoping!
I just know September will be an exciting month for everyone!
I have a friend who works in SE and he told me that the reason for the delay in releasing updates for the X10 is because they have diverted resources away from the X10 range and onto a new product that they are working on.
This is a new phone that will have Gingerbread running on it. (Apparently it will be the first phone to have the new Andoid Software on it).
Here is a link to something I found on the web to confirm this:

Sony are always quiet. think they feel they are un-touchable so they dont need to do as much lol and can get away with silly things like 'no mt' :\ lol

Google did initially approach SE to help them develop the Nexus phone but S.E declined, so them working closely together for Gingerbread isn't that far fetched.

Maybe because of the whole gaming initiative? maybe Sony is a major partner in developing a core part of the new android and just not a skin? just like with the whole GoogleTv? who knows

oh yeah forgot about that!
I am sure Google is scrambling to find a good gaming partner now that WinMo7 has Xbox, Apple has.. apple gaming?.. didnt Nokia have a thing with Nintendo before? So who else would Google ask help from? Zygna doesnt count because they are more on the facebook type games and cannot compete with Xbox Live
Um..
What does "quiet" mean? Because, as far as I can tell, SE has been announcing 2.1 is coming out by the "End of Q3" nearly daily on their twitter accounts.
Also, an update was released today in Japan, to bring Japan-specific push-email to the X10...with 2.1 still being promised in a few weeks.
Lastly, please listen to me here, it's just a phone. Breathe in, relax, and realize that your phone will be updated in the next few weeks.

I know about that quiet in the sense about their extra added features and improvements like yeah they said a bunch of times about Q3, and some features that are inherent with 2.1 like 720p recording. But beyond that what else have they said? nothing much. Thats the quiet I was referring to.. Ohwell
Cant wait for TGS, I know Sony is going to announce something big that will affect the brand as a whole
720p isnt inherent in 2.1. Its SE's call to provide users with 720p recording more than anything else.
The cynic in me says they haven't got it working right yet. Id be happy with buetooth sorted on 1.6

Of-course they're making 2.1 uncrackable and the Faraday housing for the bootloader takes some extra time to build.

This better be true, I dont wanna get jerked around xD
Doesn't this mean 16m colours are back on as well? As even Clearpad 2000 or whatever it was could do 16m, couldn't it?
I won't believe until i'll see it working and September is far far away.
As much as I would love to see multitouch on the X10, I think the title is a bit misleading, since the source of the engadget story is the same article that we saw a couple of days ago on the mobiles.co.uk blog.
With all these conflicting rumours floating around, I just won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes in a video.. but if this is true, I would definitely say that this will be the best Android phone to date. I'm very tempted to buy this phone, but the lack of multitouch is holding me back. This phone is lacking in input methods, since it doesn't have a trackball or d-pad either. Either multitouch or a trackball/d-pad would make a big difference.
The "source" of that statement is dodgy at best. It would of course be cool if it were true, even though I honestly don't miss it at all.

yes, but it's the same source that said it wouldn't ..
we'll see in 6 months ..
So, the manufacturer of the phone has said that 'multitouch' is not possible and will never be possible due to hardware and software reasons....
A sub-sub-reseller of the phone (someone in a shop) hints that the X10 is multitouch and this multitouch functionality will be released in 2.1....
Who do you believe ?
(I believe neither of them... the X10 is not multitouch, SE has told us this ! The SE blog is carefully managed by SE to release the informationthat they want us to know)
Again, THE X10 DOES NOT SUPPORT MULTITOUCH !!!

Course it does, SE are just keeping it close to their chests, Noone knows for sure but the X10 is too new to use a cheap ass Clearpad1000 touchscreen.
@ronnyuk
Why would SE do that?...
Judging from the source (mobiles.co.uk) of this recent news, they're just trying to get more people to buy the x10.
Does anyone else have problems accessing the actual source that engadget is linking to? I get a "Error establishing a database connection" message.
It would be pretty daft of SE to shoot themselves in the foot by stating that it doesn't and couldn't have multi-touch, only to go "Nah we were only messing with ya, of course it does" because of course by this point people will have made there choice on Droid and if multi-touch is that big a deal for them they won't won't have picked the X10, which is a shame.
If it does and can have multi-touch, awesome but bad marketing SE. People don't paticularily want or need those kinds of "suprises" when picking a phone.
Either way X10i is aswesome

Dear Robin,
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.
In regards to your first question, the UX platform used for the XPERIA X10 will evolve to Android 2.0 over time. Sony Ericsson has always offered firmware and software upgrades as technology evolves and will offer backward compatibility with the Android 2.0 platform when we are ready.
Sony Ericsson will release an update that will address every consumer’s concerns about possible bugs that may be in the software. But I don’t know when specifically the update will be available.
As to your third question, the Xperia™X10 will not support multitouch function because it’s a hardware limitation.

It really seems like the most likely scenario here is that because SE shipped the phone with Android 1.6 they don't want to promise anything multi-touch related, regardless of whether or not the hardware supports it. For instance, if (when) folks here at XDA root the device and figure out how to implement multitouch features (or perhaps simply install Android 2.1 successfully), and/or port over HTC's SenseUI work, or whatever, Sony's definition of "not capable" won't really match up with the hardware nerds' definition of it. My suspicion is that this is why we're seeing apprehension and denial in their reponses about it -- or at least that's what I'm hoping is happening.
We haven't gotten any sort of response that specifically indicates which model/part number/whatever touchscreen they used in the manufacture of the device, and I think that's the most frustrating part of all of this. My interest in the device has no bearing on what god-awful software Sony Ericsson delivers for it. I just want to hear that the hardware is physically capable of doing the cool stuff that the incredible development community here is almost surely aspiring to make it do.
Pretty much as I said in the other thread, at this point there is so much conflicting information from supposed 'reliable' sources that the only way to know for sure is if someone takes a set of screwdrivers to the phone, pulls it appart and looks up the actual chip details that are in there. That will confirm or deny it for definate.
At this point i wouldnt be surprsed if the answer was that both points of view were correct that some of them can do it and some cant!
Also the same can kind of be said for the software, until we get the update we may not know for definate it will be 2.0 or 2.1 so there is not much point in all this wild speculation!
Lets just sit back, chill and enjoy and awesome phone
It wouldn't make sense for sony ericsson to not admit to a feature that people want. The x10 is popular regardless of the lack of a multi touch feature and even though there are a stack of better spec'd phones just from HTC alone, it continues to sell.
The Japanese market has had amazing feature phones and smart phones a like and they have gone crazy for it. I think SE have been very calculated and has always aimed to hit two birds with one stone.
Build a beautiful phone on a good enough platform so they don't have to worry too much about the software and finally make more profit while they're at it.
Imagine if it had an amoled screen and multi touch
Hey Guys.
Might be flamed for this, but at this point in time I don´t really care.
Im SO tired of this 1.6 even after the small update and the rooting, im tired of not being able to install programs not supporting 1.6 anymore, tired of not being able to update programs for the same reason.
Tired of not having things like Live wallpaper etc.

I can't be bothered to look it up, but...
1) Live wallpaper? Really? That's what you're upset about?
2) I don't think SE has announced several times, on multiple websites and press releases that 2.1 is coming Q3 (around September). They haven't announced it at all.
3) When the X10 was released, several phones were on the market with 2.1. Yet, you knowingly purchased a phone with 1.6. Who is to blame? The company for clearly marketing the phone as 1.6 or the customer who purchased the 1.6 phone, just to ***** about it having 1.6? I'll let you decide that one.
As for me? Best phone I've ever used. Every time I use my friend's iPhone 4, I get happy once I grab my X10. My Blackberry never was this nice. Are You Mental...........
Well thats an interesting question, of course its a choice of personal preferance, but just look at the X10...............damn good looking handset, but if superficial attraction isnt your thing then i suggest trying it out, mine does everything i ask of it, used to have battery issues but since i updated to RB020 it isnt a problem, hit the 90 hour mark before needing to plug in for a recharge and that was with moderate usage calls and text and some facebucket, most are complaining about the 3g sucking the battery but i believe they are forgetting that these mobiles arent designed for web fanatics and their social websites, if you want to sit allday on your web get a laptop, as far as on the go communication goes its perfect, and with the update fast approahing it will only get better, the camera is sweet as it gives clear and detailed images, ok the call volume sucks if you are in a noisy enviroment but ive been using my handsfree so no problem, sensititvity is spot on, and of course it looks excellent............

How about skipping the conspiracy theories?
An X12 (or whatever they'll call the +1 version) preview would seem likely or perhaps even an updated roadmap for the year 2011. All nay-sayers seem to enjoy that we haven't gotten any info about Froyo and use the 2010 roadmap to support their thesis that we won't get it at all.
But on the other hand you can take the "SE is not pure evil" route and consider that the 2.2 kernel was trickier than anticipated to port and thus delayed. It's not impossible that we could get Froyo in 2011 and shipping that in 1H 2011 could be considered a big thing.

I think that SE may have got their act together (in thinking about software as well as hardware), and are maybe waiting to update to the next android revision (2.2+) or they've had problems with porting froyo, as you say.
But I think that they will also release newer phones around march to halfway through next year, that'll be announced in the next few months.

they definately will and lets hope the x10 gets supported longer than what most ppl think...!!
I would be willing to bet that they will announce the release of their latest must have device. It will be such a draw that X10 owners will forget that they are still waiting for their revision to be completed. We will all rush to have this new must have device with nearly all the bells and whistles. Only, we will have to wait a bit longer for a software revision that will take, oh about forever, or just long enough for SE to announce their next latest and greatest. Which will also make you forget that you are still waiting for your current devices revision. and so on, and so on, and so on.
This is like da ja vue.
It is starting to bare more than a strong resemblance to what happened to me with the P900, P910, and X1.
The cynic in me says hey, we cant update the x10 as we thought so chuck out a new model for our loyal customers to buy...... i only had mine cos voda said new firmware sept. Oh bugger nuts!

If that happened to you with the P900,why buy the P910 and the X1, and then the X10?
And why tell us not to buy SE when you did buy,and you will continue to buy SE products?

I know. Believe me looking back I feel pretty silly.
Edit- Sorry, to answer you question. I actually might, if it were truly great. But believe me I would wait several months for the product to be tested by the market, and only if the device is release as planned. No more broken promises. I would rather have a lesser device with a company that is more straight forward!

LOL..!!
seems to be that way since long time...!!
I predict WP7 devices, some feature phones and two new android phones that will look amazing and have everyone thinking about them until they come out at the end of 2011 once every other manufacturer has surpassed any glitzy features they came up with to make you want them now.
Does this sound familiar?
At the moment I'm interested in what they will do for their next hardware. I've got my x10 and as much as I'm frustrated at the way its been produced and the laughable software updates i still like it so much more than my HTC Touch Diamond.
Its clear that wanting to level with the other android devices simply isn't going to happen so lets all get on with waiting out our contracts and hope the next SE android device really kicks ass.
SE is sitting on the key brands that make a top multimedia device and simply needs to stop holding back on features from the Cybershot and Walkman brand rather than coming up with the smoke and mirrors of Timescape and Mediascape. If these apps must continue to be part of the Xperia line then have them as apps instead of welded in bloatware.
I wish there was some way of making sure that this happened but it seems that we can petition and moan on blogs and forums until we're blue in the fingers but in the end SE will do whatever they want and that tends to have nothing to do with what we the Geek consumer wants.
I'll stay hopeful.
"Most truths we're once deemed blasphemies"
A computer security researcher says he plans to release code Thursday that could be used to attack some versions of Google's Android phones over the Internet.
The attack targets the browser in older, Android 2.1-and-earlier versions of the phones. It is being disclosed Thursday at the HouSecCon conference in Houston by M.J. Keith, a security researcher with Alert Logic. Keith says he has written code that allows him to run a simple command line shell in Android when the victim visits a website that contains his attack code.
The bug used in Keith's attack lies in the WebKit browser engine used by Android.
Google said it knows about the vulnerability. "We're aware of an issue in WebKit that could potentially impact only old versions of the Android browser," Google spokesman Jay Nancarrow confirmed in an e-mail. "The issue does not affect Android 2.2 or later versions."

SE wont fall for this .... i dont think 2.2 is anywhere near 1st quater 2011
anyway on the good side Maxrfon (dev) has been able to access nand (FINALLY)
so if things go right , we might be able to run some custom ROM`s , who knows even CM6
haha 2.2. dream on. You've got to buy new SE pgone for that.
F*** sony, even if they make 2.2 it would be buggy. All the independent developers make way better stuff than Sony. Just look at the popularity of CyanogenMod and many more mods.
antivirus?
I dont wanna use a antivirus on my phone.. you didn't have to use that before and i will defently not use it now. ! and i really dont care about the x10i anymore im gonna replace that sh!t when my contract is over. thank god it's only about a month and half more ..

I think that should read it could've been the best smart-phone on the market .
It's sad when I see people get all excited about old OS 2.1, heck Blackberry has more frequent updates then the X10. No matter I will be leaving the X10 behind very soon & it as well as SE will be a distant bad memory.

of course Blackberry has more frequent updates in RIM than SE in X10, it's their only OS. Well nobody forced you on getting X10
if updates matter switch to Blackberry

I'm confused what other OS's does SE have? Are the providing more frequent updates to WinMo 6.5 or Symbian? Maybe they were working on the PSP phone or Windows Phone 7, & said screw X10 updates we already got their money LOL.

Maybe, but they currently working on another update for 2,1 which will provide UXP upgrades, plus working on win phone 7 update and a couple symbian devicrs. Not mentioning the PSP phone. So as you can see they are busy right now that's why have doubts about 2.2 update

The points you make don't put SE in a better light especially to X10 owners IMO. In fact I would say it reinforces for many why they won't buy another SE phone. Samsung and other brands deal with multiple platforms and are able to get updates to customers in a relatively timely manner.
I personally use an X10 mini pro rooted and running 2.1 and I have to say it is awsome!! it seems even better than some HTC phone on the same range...
I agree on the fact that SE is late compared to other vendors but, hey, android is still lacking some old/basic features like the video dialer on 3G and it seems not even ready for it on Gingerbread.
I think there is no big difference between Xperia on 2.1 or 2.2. It won't make the phone becoming a thunder!!!
still some work to be done in different ways and I hope that developers will do their best to come with new fancy stuff

True, but Samsung started producing Android earlier than Sony Ericsson so they do have the advantage of experience. Besides after the X10i we can be sure that whatever comes next will be with the latest Android OS.
It'll be foolish if they made the same mistake
we have been through a very harsh process of finally getting the 2.1 update on our phones, SE said to have another update on the UIX by december and now I have seen the multi touch working officialy by Rikard on the SE Blog, said by him to have it enabled by the next year Q1 with another update.
This looks like the guys over SE likes to keep their users kind of frustrated with future hopes of getting the phone better with updates, I'm starting to think that they see this like a game

If they are updating the OS frequently it only shows how they care for their device and want it to be better in my opinion.
Why does it bother you if they are working on an update?

Versus the non-update game SE typically does?
I'm fine with them improving our phones. Bring it on SE!
Btw there isn't an update in December....that was pushed to "early 2011" and my guess is that multitouch will be included in that update

I think the update comming out to SEUS 31/03-11 (The day before the 4. Quarter)
Maybe Sony Ericsson dont have lots os programmers, and they are not good enough to do the things before the others, the Android 1.6 are ver good costumized by SE, but there are things that needs to be programmed, like:
- Multitouch (driver)
- 16M colors (driver)
- Audio (actual driver is very bad)
- Android 2.2 (costumize and optimize to X10)
I would rather say that they have very good cryptographic team, because that is from what I can see, the best they have on their hardware.
The update in December is delayed to Q1, its the same as the one Rikard mentioned. However this will be another big update, not just enabling partial MT. Though the FW is set to launch in early January, so we should see alot of these new FW stuff at CES which I'll also be there

Any idea what the other features are? (*hint* - froyo ? )
Update game or not, im personally fine with it and I think it only shows SE cares about us and the device. They weren't going to implement multi touch but I think they chose to do so because of us the users. If you ask me I say bravo to SE and this might restore some faith into the SE bashers.....it could be a possible sign for froyo.

The X10 was, up to just recently, an incredibly crippled phone. Officially running 1.6 into the tenth month of 2010 is an embarrassment. I wouldn't laugh at anyone who decided to cut their losses and look for a better alternative.
The devs on XDA deserve a lot of credit for their perseverance. It is them that made this phone relevant again. Not SE's "brilliant engineers".

Personally I'm still very resentful towards SE and will not buy nor recommend any of their products for a least a couple years. The whole talking up THEIR "brilliant engineers" is just more bull**** and pisses me off, is that supposed to be a slap in the face to all the devs out there working to fix their mistakes? Why not tell us the truth about the hardware all along? Why cripple your phone with outdated buggy software and program it not to have multi-touch? What is the incentive there?
At least they're finally listening to all the negative feedback they've been getting, but still...a big part of me wanted to see the devs accomplish multi-touch and Froyo before SE.

They LIED about the MT since the beginning man. They said the screen was resistive and not capacitive and now they say "oh...we didn't realize it was capacitive. sorry!" Right they didn't...they do not know their own hardware they are developing for?
They do not care...they launched a phone with an outdated OS when 2.1 was already out and it took them 6 months to skin it and add in their branded goods. Now the X12 is going to be launched with 2.1 when 3.0 will be out upon its launch...see a trend here? I personally do not think they care and will never buy another SE phone. Pretty sure many feel the same...see the value of the X10's on eBay now? Dirt and yet the Nexus, older, is selling for $500+ still with the vanilla OS on it. What does that tell you? Function over fashion. Bring on the 2.2 ROM from Jerpelea & Z That will be the saving grace for me and allow me to keep this phone a bit longer. Pretty much every other newer Android phone out there has MT so this phone getting MT after almost a year really is not something to be excited over. Especially when it will only be enabled for surfing and Google maps!?

There's a lot of hate for SE, but as long as they try to improve the SE experience for those with SE phones, I'm happy. Could they be doing better? Just enabling MT for the X10 is so much more than what they have done in the past. Maybe it's because I had a Nokia as my last phone that I'm happy with any substantial improvement in the OS, haha.
I forgot where I read it, but the turnaround time from new OS to handset is roughly 4 months (it used to be nearly 12 months). Froyo (2.2) came out in May and it's only been in the last couple months where handsets have been getting 2.2. The exception is the N1, but then again, that was sold as a phone for enthusiasts (and pretty much what they're using to test it on). When Gingerbread (2.3) comes out, you can expect at least another 4 months before it gets pushed OTA (besides the N1 and the NS). As they learn Android, I'm sure they'll be faster in issuing updates. Motorola was (and sometimes is) pretty slow in pushing updates for their phones but now they're cranking it out.
In regards to multi-touch... Did they ever say resistive? They were up front when they said it wasn't going to have MT. Yeah, but I agree they should have had it on the X10 in the first place. The N1 didn't have MT at first and they were quick to add it. Nexus One's MT is the same as the future X10 MT. They both are designed for pinch to zoom applications, its a limitation found in the hardware. Games will work but it will have the same multi-touch limitations as the N1. And of course - phones that have just come out have better multitouch... they're newer phones based on newer chipsets which use newer technologies.
I dont get the big idea about MT, its not a big thing, hardly use it on my wildfire.
In regards to the x10 launched with 1.6 for me it was running better than any other device with 2.1 on there. Touch wood but ive never had any problems apart from the in ear volume. So what if the value has dropped. Its the sentimental value that counts.
I praise the devs for their hardwork. Also SE...however i will say Rikard and SE need to get off their fat arses and stop delaying everything.

i think ur taking it too far man...personally i think 1.6 was pretty good and after i updated to 2.1 i was very pleased. the updating was easy and i easily restored my contacts using the default backup and restore app
the battery life on the x10 is incredible, consitently get about 2 full days of regular usage(surfing net before classes, a little talking, some txting and listening to 1-2 hrs of music everyday). while my friend with the iphone 4 complains about terrible battery and dropped calls(he has a case too!)
the phone looks very nice and feels solid, the software isn't "buggy" i haven't had any problems with it at all(no root or anything btw). and the 2.1 version is soo smooth and looks very nice compared to say a stock android 2.1. people complain about mediascape and timescape, but personally i love them timescape doesn't use too much cpu if u disable the services (like txt, email, fb, etc) and mediascape is miles ahead of android in media playing ability.
and just to remind you, those engineers are working very hard, remember they have to develop the software for the phone from scratch and optimize every bit of it, and yes the developers here do a lot of work, but they just have to fix what the engineers messed up or modify some files, and with thousands of lines of code, its easy to mess up somewhere. im a chemical engineering major right now, and i dont know anything about computers, but in general engineers are very bright people and probably know what they are doing better than what we do.
though im not a se fanboy (this is my first se product and might be my last) some people need to tone it down. stop ranting against se like theyre the antichrist. this is my first android phone so i was still amazed with my phone even with 1.6. (android 1.6 is waaaaay better than ios 3.0) and after flashing to 2.1 my phone is enough to make my friends agree that my x10 is better than one of our friend's iphone 4 (i wouldnt be so sure of that but when they see me multitasking with widgets, live wallpaper, H connection what evr the hell that is, and removeable parts like batteries, memory, sim, etc. its hard to disagree) i will admit the x10 is nerfed by se but if you wanted a phone that focused more on android rather than custom software you should have done your research. i knew from the begining that my phone was an "android" but with se's "timescape and mediascape" ontop of "1.6" which is outdated. i also read that mt wasnt available and most likely wouldnt be. these are the things that piss people off yet these are the things you always see in online reviews, the research isnt hard. i knew what i was reading before i even knew what the terms fully meant. luckily we have devs to help fix these problems, but as i said earlier once i can upgrade i doubt ill get a se phone again (unless that psphone turns out to be real and stable, that thing looks sweet)

one think we should thank to the updates is that the price of the device that had dropped very down, maybe getting up right now.
so we have:
android 2.1,
1ghz,
4 inches
and
MT coming soon.
Try to catch a phone with those features with less than 360 bucks on ebay, only the X10.
I was thinking to getting the droid 2 GSM when it comes out, but now I really like my phone with those new things.
And the upcoming android 2.2 will be very welcome among us
SE works hard to make their devices with a pleasant experience, just like apple do with their iphones that have the best out-of-the-box experience among smartphone. even if Sony doesn't have the best state of the art technology on the world of android, we cannot deny that the UI has been carefully finished.
and btw, the x10 with 2.1 is among the best battery life GSM android phones right now, just ask someone who owns a Evo 4G about battery life and you will get it
Note: the H up there means HSDPA, which is commonly known as 3.5G for internet access, sometimes it will go to 3G again because of low signal or very congested network
I love the update game and hope it continues since it feels like I have a new phone every time a big update comes out. I find it incredible that people complain about SE keeping the promise they made to support the phone for 2 years.
