I read the first post, and it said when the update is released, I can get it even if I'm rooted (no custom rom). If I update and I''m rooted, and it will unroot me, can I just unroot again? Or should I just unroot beforehand and update and root again? Will anything change when I unroot or will I just lose superuser?
You can to it anyway you want. Anyway you will get the 2.2 update either from t-mo/samsung or the forum "in the near future".
Okay, thank you

Hi guys,
I have a question about updating to Froyo once it is available with a rooted phone. Will I have to unroot in order to take advatage of an OTA update or will I be able to upgrade along with the unrooted users?
Does the same thing apply to a phone that is flashed with a custom ROM and Kernal?
I've just rooted my phone and installed wifi tether which was the main reason for me to root.
The appeal extra battery life and the ability to over/underclock is the reason I want to flash a custom rom.
I ask this because although I've succeeded in rooting my Epic I can't seem to boot into the clockworkmod recovery screen and thus not been able to flash a custom rom or kernal. I have yet to try unrooting and starting over from scratch but with Froyo seemingly on the horizon, I don't want to go through all the hassle of trying to get a custom ROM only to have to undo it when Froyo arrives.
Thanks
This has been covered multiple times in this forum.
Devs will likely be coming out with ROMs based on Froyo very soon after the Froyo update.
But if you can't wait till then, you'll have to go back to stock everything (kernel+ROM) to get your phone updated via OTA.
Still not sure about root, but if our phones get de-rooted during the update, someone will also come up with a rooting method quickly.

My guess is yes, you will lose root as it will flash a new kernel that won't have the rooted initramfs. You will most likely need to re-root using a new method once 2.2 is available. I could be wrong though, nobody knows for sure yet.

If you want to stay rooted than do not install the ota! There hasn't been any method found to root the official version yet

What? No.
Op, it will just try to install, and then fail. Then you're all set. Nothing bad will happen
Thanks Jmoney47,hanone I was getting worried for a second there
Even if you did get it, you can still get back to froyo, but you don't have to worry
i just got my over the air gingerbread question is before i update should i go back to stock rom and also unroot??
will i lose my root if i update?
Yes you should, and yes you will. Good Luck!
if im already on stock rom but rooted should i unroot before update? I dont want to brick it.
nevermind
Do not apply the update, you will loose root and would be a while before it would be rerooted. Just watit for the rooted version of the update to be posted here, that will happen way before the update to be rooted if u apply the update. Be patient, wouldnt be surprised if the rooted flashable update is posted today or tomorrow.
^^ Yeah dont make that mistake like i did. LOL
so i had to go back to my first original rom that i backed up when i first rooted my g2 by using visionary. as soon as i installed my back up it showed that i had a update. i have android 2.2 so im sure its the 2.3 update,
well my question is if i update it will that unroot my phone and uninstall my rooted apps?? and if it does unroot me can tmobile track that it was rooted it?
keeps asking me over and over to update it
thanks alot , sorry if this been posted before, i couldn't find it if it was
Yes it will unroot it, if it is the 2.3 update, if you removed stock apps it will attempt and fail. Just update to a pre-rooted 2.3 end of problem. If you search there is other possible alternatives.
thanks alot, one last question, so if i want to unroot my phone at some point, i just uninstall my root apps and do the 2.3.3 update? will tmobile ever know if it was rooted by doing it this way?
From some instructions I received, I was told I had to revert back to 4.0.4 on my RAZR M in order to root my phone. All went relatively smooth root was achieved, but now my problem is its not allowing mwlw to OTA update back to Jellybean. I was thinking of using CSD to flash the stock Jellybean build back onto my phone but I don't want to undue the root! If I just find an stock Razrm JB image, can I flashed JB like that without losing my root? This is actually a friends phone! So I need to get things working right. Thanka for any help!

You can root just fine on Jellybean.
So I would remove root cleanly, if you can. If you deleted apps, then more than likely the update will fail as it searches for dependencies.
If thats the case, then you will have to SBF back to stock. Which at that point, you can probably just SBF straight to jellybean, then root as normal.

Thanks for the response. Let me ask this last question: Since I'm already rooted on 4.0.4, can I just flash the stock jellybean ROM using
RSD without breaking root?

You could try voodoo ota root keeper from Google play. Its not guaranteed to work but if not, its really easy to regain root using the motofail2go exploit.
