Replace IE with Opera in ROM? - Windows Mobile

Hello,
is there a simple way to replace Internet Explorer with Opera Mobile in a already cooked ROM? I mean by that: completely remove the MS IE and replace it with Opera Mobile as default internet browser. If it's possible, can somebody explain me what do I need to do it myself and how to do it? I would also like to replace some other apps, like Excel, etc...
Thanks in advance for every answer!
Conrad

You cannot remove IE from WM. It's an integral part of the OS, as it with windows XP (in general). I suggest you just disable it and make Opera the default browser. Easy enough to do...

NRG28 is totally right. It's integrated even much deeper than one in XP. Try to open any UI resource file with Restorator for example - all the buttons like OK, Cancel and so on are in htm format in all dlls and muis. As soon as you delete IE - you will totally loose User Interface.
So it's impossible not only to handle with already cooked rom but also there is no way to cook such kind of rom.

How does it work?

I was trying this past weekend to sell something on Craigslist. I remembered a while back that I could take a couple pics of my things to sell on my MDA and post it right from the phone. Now it doesn't work. I get this error saying that it can't process my request. I did a little homework and found out that the site has somehow blocked people from posting ads from their phones. How does the site know I'm posting from my phone?
from what i know by default your browser of choice has a name it uses to identify itself to a website. using schap's advance config 2.02.1.0.0 there is a feature u can check the broswer name, by default it is set to HTC_P4350 Mozilla/4.0 (for my wing) which i am sure website pick up as a mobile browser maybe set it to what the default IE on your computer shows.
maybe you can try using Opera Mobile and masking it as a desktop??
can Netfront do that? i have no idea....
With the Advance config version i mentioned above u can rename the browser agent and yes most websites dont pick up that opera mini is mobile ie myspace from pocket IE will display lame text groups for checking things... just based on the broswer where as opera mini 4 it picks up the normal myspace page if that makes sense.
alright. i'll give it a shot

Yes, netfront can do that.
steps..
1)go to its options>misc tab
2)edit/make a user agent as following..
Code:
title:IE
user-agent:Mozilla/4.08 (compatible; Windows NT/5.1) 6.0
appName:MSIE
appVersion:6.0
appCodeName:Mozilla
language/platform: en / Windows NT 5.1

Can Opera be inactivated on HD?

I am using a software which provides me information in the forms of texts and figures. Everytime when I opened figures on my HD, Opera activated itself and took over the role of viewing figures. Subsequently, all the informations including texts and figures must be viewed by the Opera, and crashes frequently occured. I wonder if Opera could be inactivated so to prevent this problem.
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
Can anyone help?
I think your problem is that Opera is declared to be the standard browser. Maybe changing this would help. As far as I know this is done by changing some registry keys.
Is it possible to change the link in Touchflo 3D on my blackstone from opera to another browser ?
I dream to click on the Internet'tab, and when I tap on Earth's picture :NetFront run instead of Opera.
I couldn't find a way to change the default browser. Does anybody know how to do it?
I remember having to do this on one of my older PDAs. I believe the instructions that I followed were roughly similar to the ones found at this link.
Note that this is actually for Windows Mobile 5, but there's a good chance they will still work. Just make sure you note down all of your original settings before you change anything. And, as always, try at your own risk.

i had the same problem. i was using uptodate medical program. the software is designed to be used with PIE. so what i did was google the regedit. there are a lot of regs to be editted to change from opera to PIE. basically what u could do is open regedit on a pda without opera browser. just change the main .html, .htts etc to pie. hope this helps for a start. but if you still have problem. post a reply and i'll give full regedit amendments. thanks
please e_cam23, i am also a fellow uptodate user and i have the same problem.. using uptodate on the blackstone is a painful experience for me :'( sometimes it works and sometimes opera opens and then crashes and takes me back to the previous uptodate page pleeeeeease help me out i am trying to make IE the default bs i couldn't on my own..
UpToDate
In the latest version(16.3) of UptoDate, crashes occur far less frequently. Try it out and you will feel relieved!
I am not sure where to get it from i got it from a friend on a dvd..
forgot to say that all the method i found for touch pro and diamond and kaiser did not work on my hd.. editing registry values in RAI under shell to iexplore and Pocket ie,, also a file by darkness which tells me unsuccessful installment when i run it :S
In new opera (official release), there is an option default browser inactivation.
It may help you, freinds
change default browser on Touch HD
double post
Sorry
All,
from my understanding Opera is 'hardcoded' in TF3D, changes in the registry will not have the effect you want. From my knowledge there are two ways to overcome this.
1. use SSMaPa to patch another default browser into Manila.exe (works also for some other applications)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407777
2. use VJBrisk to route the program launch of Opera to your preferred browser
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=477519
I hope this helps
Regards
install new version of opera doesnt mater wether on the device memory or the storage card but i did it on the storage and then uninstall it you'll end up with explorer being the default browser for everything and this is the only way that worked for me
It may help

"Better"? In what way? Opera Mobile works "better" as a fully fledged browser, but it is slow.
Opera mini is fantastic for what it does. It's very quick compared to Opera Mobile thanks to data compression. Whether it's through GPRS, HSDPA or even wireless Mini is "better" in terms of speed of download and display when viewing webpages.
I'm trying to think of a way to word this without sounding rude; Please don't post if all you're going to do is tell someone not to use the application they have chosen to use, rather than provide an answer to the question.
He probably has his reasons for using Mini, and you your reasons for using Mobile. But that's simply not the question he asked.
I would say those browsers compliment each other.
OperaMobile great for full desktop experience plus flash, but also sucks data as hell and battery too. Pitty it crashes often since it's - still - beta.
OperaMini works in almost every condition. Does not have many OperaMobile features but is great for everyday usage.

thanks guy for the helps, the reason i asked because i am using X1A updated with new software and the opera mobile does not works on some websites, i am still looking for the opera mini cab ,does any know please share
there is no opera mini cab. you will have to download the program from the opera site. the files or jad and jar. i believe you need like a seperate program to install this if you down load the jad and jar files.

I will have to repeat my post, some of you might have missed it.
There is a cab which installs opera mini and gets rid of that connection message.
Try the first link, open the zip file and install the cab file on your phone.
Good luck
I want to use Opera Mobile, but I can't figure a way to sync my desktop bookmarks with this version. Therefore, I'm stuck with Opera Mini. Has anyone found a way to do bookmark sync on Opera Mobile?
Thanks.
yup, i did miss your post. i guess we do have a cab for opera mini

Anyone using Opera Mini ?

I've just installed Opera Mini on my Jade and I have to say, it's pretty nice.
Unlike Opera Mobile it is very fast and the zooming and display is better for a small screen like the 320x240 Jade screen.
Since the websites and images will be compressed by the Opera servers, the traffic is lower and the speed higher. Of course, I won't use the browser for sensible data, because the data runs through Opera proxies. But for normal browsing it's great.
The only problem: I can't switch to fullscreen, because the fullscreen can only be enabled by a key combination which I don't have on my Jade. Maybe someone knows how to fix this.
But it's still a nice browser.
Yes agree, I must say the speed is pretty impressive compared with the Op Mob even by setting graphics to high. btw is is there any method to launch it direct without launching jBlend first ? Am I missing something ? Cheers.
Here is a very useful overview of the features the most popular JVMs have.
As for the direct shortcut, my jade came with esmertec jbed, here is a description how to invoke opera mini (or any other midlet) directly from windows.
The problem is there's no description how to do that with jblend (why don't you use the preinstalled jbed, anyway?)
Mine is pre installed with JBlend. I've found the direct shortcut command i.e. \Windows\JBlend_AMS.exe -R 0.jar (0 is where your Opera Mini is in \windows\java, depending on your other installations.)
Thanks.
azahidi, would you highly recommend using opera mini or the stock opera browser?
Hi !
Yes Opera Mini is Very Fast ! That Good but i have the solution for your problem !
When you are on Opera Mini go to :
Setting => Full screen
that very simple but i don't know if you want that or an other "full screen"

For me the same: I find it important that the browser is fully integrated in the operating system (Windows mobile). Opera mini as a java-applet only has limited connections to the other functions of the phone (example: direct dial of telephone-numbers listed on web pages).

Talking about java-applet. How many of you are using Jblend? I tried today installing those 3D games that supposedly work with Jblend..but failed miserably in doing so...need help!
There is only a java version now, no PPC version. I don't like java programs.

Ads blocking in Opera 9,7

Anyone knows where to add the urlfilter.ini file in Opera 9.7 in HD2? I tried /windows/opera9 but it does not work.
Yeah I too would like to know how to block adds.. Im on a very limited data plan..
Anyone knows?
Disable the plugins?
Yes i would also like to know. Handy thing to have i think. I will try dumping it all over the place and see if anything works.
I tried dumping it in:
Windows\Opera9
Windows\Opera9\profile
But all without joy....
FOUND ON XDA :
ad-block is a well know feature on browsers, which can avoid downloading contents (e.g. ad) with a set of rules.
Now I discovered the Opera mobile does provide ad-block feature (named content blocker, same as that on desktop)!
To proceed, download the following preference file,
http://adnsto.net/other/urlfilter.ini
and paste to your diamond's Windows\Opera9\ directory

giyf.
Already found that. Sadly it didn't work.
Anyone else have any suggestions? Surely some people have this working. I can't imagine everyone just putting up with ads.

I think that Opera 9.7 delivered with HTC HD2 has the filtering functionality removed from code.
On Opera 10.60 for Desktop if you go to "opera:config" and type "filter" you will find "URL Filter File" under Network category.
On HTC HD2 there is no "URL Filter File" in "opera:config"
On Opera 10.60 for Desktop if you unpack (upx -d) "c:\Program Files\Opera\opera.dll" and do an unicode search after "urlfiter.ini" you will find one entry.
On HTC HD2 if you do an unicode search after "urlfilter.ini" in \Windows\Opera9.exe you will find nothing.
Thank you HTC for giving us a pinch and zoom Opera 9.7 *without* ad blocking capabilities.

Opera 10 has "URL Filter File" under "opera:config". Default value is: "\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\profile\urlfilter.ini".
Opera 10 doesn't have "Pinch and Zoom" functionality.
