I am very experienced in rooting Samsung phones. I would like to root my mom's phone, which, right now is on bone stock, without erasing any data. I need some help (I also want to keep her on stock, the only reason for this is to install RTL languages on her phone).

Thank you, but I do not want to flash an Eng bootloader, can I just temp root, mod /system, and unroot, and the changes will stick?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Try the temp root apps Visionary+ and Z4Root
They may not be on the market, so I just Google them
i cant see why not..but then again ive never tried that..i think it will tho....dont take my word for it tho
Okay, and if I flash the eng hboot, can I just flash a stock RUU to get back to stock and S-On for warrenty?
EDIT: If anyone here is familiar with Odin, what is a similar program to unbrick this phone?

Yes, you can run the One "zip" RUU-Back to stock

Wait, you bricked this phone? But how? And yeah, you could have done a "permanent root" then RUU'd back to stock/S-ON
EDIT: You can perm-root with this GUI tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976605&highlight=gui
It's how I rooted my friend's Shift (I personally rooted mine via CLI but this GUI was out by the time he got a Shift)
I didn't brick the phone. I want want information in case I do.

About the only way your going to brick this phone is if you flash a corrupt radio or something not intended for the Shift. In a worst case scenario the phone can almost always be recovered by using the the RUU or the One zip back to stock.
Thank you.

No. With temp root changes will be reverted after a reboot.

You have to have the engineering boot loader in order for any /system changes to stick (including the su binary necessary for root access)

Is it possible to flash Clockwork Mod Recovery after applying the 2.3.4 update?
Yes if you have s-off

How about for us people with s-off and stock 2.3.4? Are we stuck on this ROM until someone gets root?

I believe that they are working on a way to break 2.3.4 still. I haven't noticed any post confirming a successful root of the OTA update.
There has been some talk about gingerbreak doing something but it was experimental and I didn't do a whole lot of digging so I wouldn't recommend even trying.

Does anyone know if there's an updated guide to downgrading? I think the links (like to download the JAVA JDK) needs to be updated. I've spent hours reading and trying to find exactly what I need to download. I've tried installing 3 different JDK and none of them will let me install the Android SDK.
Edit: I found a fix to my problem. The Android SDK wasn't detecting JDK, all I had to do was click back then next, WTF...

I am having horrible reception (1, 2, no bars, no service, emerg call only) and can never get 3G or H signal icons. I am constantly on EDGE. These problems are occurring at places where i usually have great reception. Whats the problem?

thats up to you to find out each radio works differently in other areas. Im assuming youre on the stock radio, your next best bet would be to try the panache radio. btw, MIUI is a rom not a radio. just flash each radio til you find the right one for you
Is there any way I can just put the zip onto my sd card and flash? Because the radio thread in dev says I need to put it into adb folder, and I have no idea how to use Android sdk...

...lol ok...
the Engineering bootloader, on the MT4G i think is 0.85.2007.
the Engineering bootloader gives you flashing rights, i.e changing the splash screen, radio, recovery image using adb... etc. i'd highly recommend it.
still no luck. are there any roms out there that I can flash that end up changing my radio in the process?

Nope, but learning how to use adb really isn't hard. I'd suggest reading trublue_drew's thread in the dev section called adb for dummies.

I would follow this tutorial if you're still unsure about flashing radios. It's a really simple and easy process, but you have to follow directions TO THE LETTER. Otherwise, you might end up with a fancy, expensive paperweight.
Ok I currently have Engineering hboot 85.007 on my phone. A lot of the stickies have 89.005. Which is better and/or the most current. Also what exactly can you do with the engineering bootloader? All it added to the list of options is system info? I'm trying to figure out if I have the right one, and if it is installed properly. I did read, but a lot of the guides are outdated.

What he said. The eng hboot lets you fastboot, which is one extra(and very formidable) protection against permabricking your phone. The other hboot is the standard "consumerized" one; it works fine for most purposes but you don't get the extra protection that constant flashers should have.

I have the 85.007 Engineering bl on mine, but my question is, 'Is 85.007 the best Engineering bl, or is 89.005 an Engineering bl also? I'm trying to understand how many Engineering bl there are, & if one is better than the other, etc. I would like to have the best one available on my device.
Sent from my customized mt4g using XDA premium
85.whatever is the only engineer bootloader. 89.whatever isn't an engineer hboot, that's the consumer one that Tmobile would prefer everyone to have on their phones. Think of the 85 bl as the rooted version and 89.whatever as the stock version.
I hope I don't get burned at the stake for making that analogy lol

The reason I am confused, is that in the DEV section, there is a sticky, written by mark manning, with custom recovery and engineering hboot. There are 3 different file packs and in each one, it states "engineering hboot 89.005" ? If that is wrong the maybe they should be changed? But thanks for explaining it to me.

Ok, so my wife's phone has to go back to TMOBILE by Friday Sept 21st, I have Virtuous Affinity on it and I Unrooted with VISIONary not thinking that i should have flashed something stock first. I now cannot regain root for some reason using VISIONary or even flashing a PD15IMG through bootloader,,, I'm not comfortable at all with ADB, please help if there is another way. Anyone?

Is your phone still s-off?
Sent from my Toasted Marshmallow using Tapatalk 2
Visionary only roots the ROM. If you're still S-Off you have the ability to write to the partitions through adb or recovery.
Tell us what happens when you try to flash PD15IMG.zip

I downloaded multiple versions including the 2.2.1, 2.3.4, and 2.34 (new) version... all those did similiar things, still not getting me back to stock. Does it make a difference that I have a custom rom with 2.3.5 on it?
Any other thoughts?

Why would it make a difference? Also, if it did, I would have asked you about it.
The only reason a good download will not install, usually, is if either you're on an unlocked bootloader from htc-dev, or something is wrong with either your bootloader or phone.
