Bell Vibrant Troubles - Galaxy S I9000 General

Okay, I purchased the ATT version of Sgs the captivate about a month ago and just returned i hoping to buy a Bell Vibrant.
However, looking through i9000 threads I see the bell has issues with hardware problems with download/recovery mode. Now I am in the US and will be importing the phone. I am a flash whore. I tinker with my phone alot. I bricked about five captivate just tinkering around. Now if i import this phone i guess i would stop or wait til its a proven mod. But while tinkering if I should brick the phone I would be **** out of luck. Since phone is imported I would have no warranty service.
I really enjoy my time with my captivate. It was a very nice phone. But I noticed dev on the i9000 is better so this is one of my reason of changing to bell vibrant. I am actually coming from an N1. So I was little spoiled with all the development. I want a SGS but I am not sure if I should pull the trigger on a bell vibrant.
I guess I am posting to hear some inputs from Bell Vibrant users.

as long as the 3 button modes work, you are safe

The odds of you getting a 3 button working Bell virbant seem like playing the lotto at this point. Since you have to import it it will make it even more of a pain to locate one.
If I were you I would look into getting a European model, the 3 button combo seems to have much fewer issues with them.

The phones with the problem using the three button all seemed to be 0 day. I've been talking with the bell store peoples here a lot the last two weeks and they have not had any issues with the newer stock.
I've played with 6 or 7 of them now (all 3 button capable) as well, showing the one sales guy some cool stuff with the phone. ;p
Can guaranty anything mind you but it's looking better.
O.

well if your determined to get the phone and worst comes to worse some one could purchase the phone and ship to you After testing for recovery and download you can send the money through pay pal and they will hold the money until you get the phone and then release who ever gets there money back and you get a bell vibrant

mine and my gf's both go into download mode

I've spent a lot of time at the Bell store and had 3 in my possession. The first 2 (keyword, first) didn't have the 3 button capability. The last and present on does and was purchased long after the first 2. The new stock does not seem to have the problem and it is safe to assume it no longer. Bell and Samsung have known about the problem and are planning on having a fix out for it in September (with Froyo). The newer stock will already have the fix implemented (i.e. mine).

Can you have someone you know get it for you and confirm the 3 button moded prior to purchasing?

Which is the best tab to get?

Hey guys, wondering which version of the tab is the best to get, eg: the one that has least trouble flashing and will work in most places.
Reason i ask is that a friend of mine is looking at getting one after playing with mine but he has just gone to the US for a couple weeks. Should he get a tab up there, or one when he comes back to Australia?
it would be a P1000T if he was to get one down here (same as mine)
Thanks
I would have gotten AT&T (my cell carrier), but I wanted to pay it off over several months, so I bought the Sprint version with my Best Buy CC. I do love that glossy white back surface.
Oh, and I'm using mine as Wi-Fi only, so I don't worry about paying a month carrier fee. Can always tether my phone if I need something and I'm not near a AP.
Sprint is getting much less dev love, but it is much newer.
Sprint better video? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10370530&postcount=11
More storage in non PCS ones.
I would rate the Sprint tab as dead last, *if* want you want to do is uncripple it and re-ROM it.
Sprint crippled the ability to pair and connect bluetooth keyboards and mice to it. Also, each day I check in vain for Clockwork Recovery love for the Sprint version, and no ROMs around as yet. :-(
Wait till he gets back to Australia as the voice app have been disabled on us models and would need some hacking whereas the aus one wouldn't as far as im aware!

Damn...which phone to get?

When I read about the Atrix about a month ago I decided then and there that I would get one. Then the CES coverage sealed the deal. Now after reading these forums for the last 2 hours I'm not sure and it mostly comes down to the locked bootloader. I'm still rocking my Tilt 2 and am used to dropping whatever ROMs and software I want on it. I've been waiting for a decent AT&T phone with a hardware keyboard but since I appear to be **** out of luck for the foreseeable future I figure it's time to upgrade. This will be my first Android phone but I've read the posts explaining the problems with a locked bootloader. I don't use my phone for games, basically just call, text, email, RSS, tethering, a handful of apps and occasionally remoting in to servers. I'm hoping people here can give me some advice. Should I:
Go with the Atrix?
Go with the HTC Insprie 4G?
Wait for the LG Optimus 2X (assuming it comes to AT&T, T-Mo sucks here)?
Wait for the Samsung Galaxy S2 (assuming it comes to AT&T)?
As you can see I stick with phones for a long time so any help would be appreciated. Of course I'm leaning towards the dual-core phones for future-proofing. If the bootloader is never cracked will those of you who bought the Atrix still be happy with it?
TIA.
From what you've said you use your phone for it doesn't seem like a locked bootloader is really going to affect you. I use the Inspire and love it. I have been thinking about the Atrix but I'm just not a huge MOTO fan. With root out for both the Inspire and Atrix it really comes down to personal pref. I'm sure someone will find a way to get past the lockdown on the Atrix(hopefully)

Complained until Verizon gave me a free upgrade

I kept complaining about my fascinate and how many problems I've been having. I was trying to get them to give me a free upgrade without signing a contract...just changing the phone. Unfortunately, I ran out of warranty (which I completely forgot to think about). Verizon finally decided to give me a manager's upgrade on all 4 of my lines. I think they called it an M2 upgrade.
This means that I can upgrade a year and a half early (but i'd need to sign a new 2 year contract).
They won't let me upgrade to any apple phone, but I can upgrade to a 3g or a 4g phone of my choice. They said something about "Iconic" phones, and how it takes a while longer before they can let me upgrade to an iconic phone.
Does anyone have experience with these sort of upgrades? Was what was offered to me worth all of the complaining I did? Would you guys recommend waiting until the Nexus Prime, upgrading my lines to that, and the selling it on ebay to get any other phone I want..(2 lines will have the iphone 4s, two will stay with either the fascinate or the prime). And also. Does anyone know what the deal on the Iconic phone upgrade is? How long does the phone need to be out for?
Let me know if you guys have any questions about how I got the upgrades as well.
What was wrong with your fascinate?

Lots of problems with GPS lock. I'm the only one who roots / flashes new roms / kernels. Out of the 4 fascinates we have, 3 of them would not lock.
We also had problems with voicemails showing up but no missed calls. Pretty irksome to be expecting a call and then notice you had a voicemail from the person you were waiting on an hour later.
And I kinda just wanted to upgrade
i got a free Droid Charge without having to renew my account. working on the same for the wifes phone. my Charge will be here tuesday. no problems with the GPS on either of our fascinates but plenty of missed calls and text.

What phones are you guys looking at

Anyone moving on from the vibrant? What phone / carrier are you looking at? Is there a way to tell what will have working miui and GPS? I've had it with this phone ...GPS never works when you need it ...great when you don't. Now the 911 thing ...
Any suggestions?

Never another Samsung (unless its got Nexus in the name). Google phones for me from now on.
Im stuck in this phone for about another year. Don't want to pay to exit fee, and don't want to sign up for another 2 years to get a phone.
Not paying 500+ for an unlocked phone either - no money.

Yea contracts aren't cool never again! Unlocked S3 is my next unless they have hardware button cuz updates are beast on unlocked Sammy phones there getting ics leak this week!

These are my same sentiments. I'd love to get the Galaxy Nexus if it came to T-Mobile.
Though, I hope I can hold out until the S3...
I would potentially look at another samsung, I bought it as soon as it came out and almost a year and a half later I am still very happy with it. As of right now I would lean towards a nexus device, I guess it really depends on what is the new hot phone is out over the summer.
Does anyone know if any manufacturers have a better updating reputation than samsung?
Question for you guys. When my contract ends with T mobile can i go to non contract plan and save some money every month? So that i can get unlocked phone from out side. Also galaxy nexus seems the only phone that works with t mobile 3G bands. So we are pretty much stuck with one option if we want to get our own phone and still be on t mobile.
Id say galaxy nexus, if it ever came to tmobile. I wont spend full price on another android phone that is not a nexus.
from now on its....nexus or get lost. (simply because of updates)

I bit the bullet and got a Galaxy Nexus before Thanksgiving, and I'm glad I did. I will never get hamstrung by another carrier branded phone again as long as the Nexus phones are available. I had the Vibrant for a year. The Froyo update barely happened. Gingerbread? Yeah right. ICS....keep dreaming. Even CM doesn't want this phone anymore. I don't blame them either, the 911 issue was definitely a problem.
With the Nexus, I finally have a GPS that actually works (and works indoors). I get locks in a few seconds instead of waiting 5 to 10 minutes if it locks at all. Sure, I could have got an S2 - which IMO is another redheaded stepchild of the GS2 family and locked on TMO. One of my driving factors is that the international Nexus is pentaband. No phone is future-proof but this one suits my needs for a while.
iPhone 4S on AT&T. Don't have to spend $600 upfront and never have to worry about if it will fall out of support in less than a year.
Android is not reliable that way, and even the Nexus phones here are carrier locked. I'm not importing a phone.

Doesn't solve the upfront cost issue nor does it solve Android's built in problems. Plus, iMessage is hot and almost everyone here that I know has an iPhone.

I've had my vibrant since it came out in July last year. I hadn't thought of getting a new phone until I heard about the galaxy nexus. I'm going to wait for prices to drop, then choose between the gs2 and the galaxy nexus (depends on if the s2 actually gets ics). After having a phone with an amoled screen protected by gorilla glass, I can't go to something dull in comparrison and easily scratchable/breakable.

My problem is with choosing a phone is....
If I want to go to get a 2yr contract again, then I'd go for either S2 or Amaze... BUT... Here's the dilema:
What really IS the truth behind those two phones... People have been saying S2 is great, and there are others that say PIXEL is worse, go with Amaze. ARGH!
If I want to go OFF contract, then definitely no question: Galaxy Nexus.
Right of this moment, I'm using my friend's Nexus S, we swapped, because he wants to dev on my Vibe, and I want to flash happy on the Nexus S. Until he's satisfied of what he's doing to my phone, then I'm happy to be on Nex S for the mean time. Besides, if he bricks that damn Vibe, he'll get me a SGS4G. So I'm not too worried.
BUT, here's the dilema...
THE DAMN PRICE OF THE GALAXY NEXUS!

Agreed. A $600-700 phone is not in my budget at the moment. I have more important things too spend my money on (bills, 4mo old, etc). As much as I'd love to have the Nexus, it's just not going to happen and it won't come to tmo anytime soon (if ever).
Been looking at the sgs2 and Amaze the past few days. Going into the store this weekend and probably walking out with one. My Vibrants days are numbered.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
To me service is more important than phone. That's why I'm gonna ditch tmo/att for Sprint. Would rather put up with slightly slower 4g that's unlimited than to have "the nation's fastest network" at 2 gig a month.
I'll probably end up getting the evo3d cuz after my Vibrant experience I'm not thrilled with the way Samsung fails to update their products.

I wish galaxy nexus it seems very powerful,
any one can send it to me from usa ??
I just switched TO this phone a week or two ago and couldn't be happier.
I got the Vibrant for $100 on Craigslist and signed up for the month to month T-mobile plan.
Dual core or not there's nothing I ran on the G2x that I can't run on this phone (Even Tegra only games with Chainfire).. except video conferencing with FFC, which I never did, but could always add a FFC later.
I'm getting the same data rate on this "3G" phone as I did on the G2x "4G" phone AND I'm not locked into a contract.
One of the reasons I got it was it's MIUI supported.
I've tried MULTIPLE smartphones since the first iPhone, iPhone 3G, 3Gs then switched to Palm Pre.. then to Android - MyTouch, HTC Hero, DroidX, Samsung Intercept, LG Optimus V, G2x, Motorola Triumph and now the Vibrant.
By far the best one of all those I've mentioned.
I know it's a year old, but I won't be switching anytime soon.

Remember When

Remember when you came to XDA everyday and there was always something new for your phone?
What is going on? We only have two roms for a phone thats been out for a year?
You want constent support from the development community, follow the sheep and buy a highly advertised device like the Note 4 or go pure Android with Nexus.
The Note Edge was never highly advertised, nor did anyone really know how using the edge would be like. So the majority of the public got a Note 4 over the Note Edge, because the heard about the phone more.
Or
You could learn how to build your own custom rom.
Ya I don't think it's the forum I think it's the phone. The sprint guy I asked at my local store told me about 2 months after it was released they haven't even sold 1 unit yet out of that store. I think it was way overpriced on the 2 year service agreement price. It was 299 for the note 4 and 429 for the note edge. I think that really hurt the sales.

That's not really a good excuse. The phone is the exact same other than the screen. I can't imagine it'd be that much more difficult to make a Note 4 rom work on an Edge.

The phone is not the exact same. Maybe some of the hardware is, but software wise it's a completely different animal.
The screen being a huge difference. In making a custom rom someone would need to figure out how to code to make use of the edge display like it works with stock rom.
Do some research before complaining. Like I said Samsung never intended for this device to be the new flagship device. The majority bought Note 4 or other devices. Or the heavy modders bought Nexus or the One Plus One.
One of the pitfalls to being a early adopter of a device that Samsung used as a feeler to see how the public reacted to the curved screen. Hell if I remember correctly Samsung only produced a limited amount of Samsung Note Edge's. Which could also be the reason why developers steered clear of this device.
you have to realize too as far as i have heard they sold a **** ton more note 4 than note edge so less people have them which equals to less people developing roms. i get bored with mine too sometimes i am checking for the lollipop update daily. just to get something different on there. but it is what it is man. be happy with it or go to the note 4 is my only advice for you

Your right about lack of roms, your 100% incorrect that the edge has been out for a year. Edge release date was November 2014. Lets hope in time more devs jump on board.
Lol I wish it has been out for a year. Maybe in a year someone will Crack the root process for Verizon note edge. And I won't have to buy the developer edition that looks like it's never releasing.

Yeah, I remember the times when I had a nonperfect phone that needed a custom Rom for major improvements. Now I don't have a dire need for full tweaks anymore, which is kind of boring. But I would love more cool new apps for the edge panel, other than uninspired superhero themes.
But I will soon try some Roms anyway, just for the fun of it.
If you want to point fingers aim them at samsung. This is, function wise, the best phone I ever had. They billed it as a concept phone and developers said: eff that! Why devote time and resources to a phone that is a shot in the dark. I had the htc hd2 and the htc sensation and in 2 weeks there were ROMs, tips, accessories and everything. The support and marketing for this phone has been abysmal. Samsung is lucky that I stopped rooting my phones so I do not look to tinker with it as much as I used to do so stock is fine. But they really did us, consumers of this particular phone, no favors.

I believe if you have a plan with unlimited data with sprint you can upgrade every 12 months.
But if you bought the phone for full price your shouldn't be locked into any contract.
Too bad sprint coverage in my area is lacking... my unlimited days is the only thing keeping me with Verizon at this point. Is literally take any other service if it was unlimited 4G in my house like my Verizon.

All that I'll say is.... Getting an AOSP/AOKP rom to work with the edge panel has been.... Very unforgiving. I'll keep tinkering in my spare time, but it isnt looking good.
Otherwise, you'd be looking for more themed / debloated TW roms.... Which with root, you can debloat it yourself anyway....
-sent from the edge of the note galaxy-
I feel your pain.. the edge doesn't seem like that much of a difference at first, after all it's just 1 little screen that's different about it. I've reached a point where i am now just ordering a new one cause there is no going back with this one now. This time i'm going to do what i should have done in the first place... Make a backup immediately!
As far as building a complete custom rom ground up, I am not that good. i'd like to be but i just am not. i'll throw out probably a debloated TW with and one without root for those who only want to remove those annoying apps then dont care about root anymore. maybe save someone a little time.
