This is a duplicate post from the main forum... Thought I would post it here to let all my Diamond developers know about it too:
I have been "leeching" from XDA for a while now and I want to give something back to XDA.
I have a webhosting business. I am not really doing anything with it at this time. I was thinking about opening it up for XDA members for file hosting.
I HATE RapidShare and other "free" sites like it... I wouldnt do anything more than some banner ads on the site, maybe some GoogleAdSense... Nothing intrusive... I promise...
Would anyone use this COMPLETELY FREE SERVICE?
Im setting it up now, 100MB for RAR and ZIP, 50MB for CABS

I love the idea! I personally hate going to the free downloader sites that make you wait or bombard you with popups.

that's what i need. rs, mediafire or whatever are sucks. can't get any files i want. some one should realize this idea

Sounds great, but one request if possible? Could the ZIP and RARs be bigger? A lot of the roms for Diamond and Raphael are around 120mb..

if it would be possible to use torrents as a means of downloading ROMS...
coz for the past 5 months ive been in this forum... ive noticed a lot of complaints for low download speeds and downloads getting cancelled because of low bandwidth n more ....
i was wondering if we can create torrents also to share our ROMs???

definitely i think its a nice idea but who will make torrent alive after a month as leechers will be 0!!
count me out. i don't have bandwidth to upload file from torrent better to use multiupload site like multiupload.com kiloupload.com gazup.com uploadjockey.com i m using this since long time to upload rom and nobody report any problem yet

well i was wondering .... since all u chefs do such a great job of cooking up stuf.. maybe i could help out in this area.... see the whole point is that ppl should start downloading from some where right???
... once things are set in motion .... there will be seeds ...
No doubt u can always upload to rapidshare etc.. and all those sites....
but even for a month .... if a Rom comes out.... and one of us donwnloads it and makes a torrent of it... ppl will then start downloading it and the seeds will go up....
as for upgrading Roms and making new Roms ..... they can be created as new torrents....
Im just saying that .... whats the harm in trying this method???
lets try it first .... see the results and if it works well ...wel scrap it...

Sorry bro..but biggest disappointment is i have limited bandwidth and i cant download now...i have free internet timing of 6 to 8 in morning

well ... thats the thing with public trackers .....
but look at this this way....
in any case whatever speed anyone is getting(it will vary .. more seeds ... more speed)
this method is a very good alternative than the direct download method where if by chance the bandwidth gets cut... the download stops or is interrupted... the torrent will never be....

I am ready to seed at the rate of 1.5Mbps. Count me in. Can somebody make a Sticky thread containing a list of torrentz where ppl can download? I promiss I will seed everything I download as long as my servers up and alive, I have several ISP lines here with unlimited bandwidth. 1*2Mbps + 1*128kbps + 1*256Kbps and my beloved 7.2Mbps HSDPA. But HSDPA thing will only work when my laptop is alive. Can somebody tel me how to seed/leach a torrent without downloading it. Because.., I am only using what is comming out of sumit's kitchen. But I am happy seeding others too...

Note: When you click that link, it will redirect to a server. When sharing links, for example you are redirected to 'http://server1.bikcmp.com/rom/abc.zip' (just a example) and you're going to share a link on a ROM thread, just use

The servers (more than one. ) have a extremely, EXTREMELY fast uplink speed. 2.5 Gigabits a second enough for you? On 3 servers?

I don't think he was trying to be mean, I think he was saying "Are you sure that your server can handle this?". I could see someone hosting it from their home or something to try to help out, but they have a very slow connection. These are real servers, don't worry hehe. I do work with servers, so I know stuff about them .
As much as I hate to do it...

Overall I like to host on my own server because I can completely control it and can easily pull downloads or change something if I need to. But I know on release days my site drags so having some decent mirrors would be nice. I'll be in touch. And thanks for this.

I know what you mean; before I didn't want to host my rom on my servers because of bandwidth concerns. Now, I doubt it will be a problem .

Yea... I get way too many messages it makes it hard for me to do anything.
I know some of you use free upload services that are sometimes slow and make end users wait to download. I have my own domains and use a hosting package for my little website that has 150 GB of space and unlimited traffic allowed. I can set up a subdomain and ftp account for devs to use in exchange for a donate button if anyone wants to put in towards my hosting fees. Nothing required just an offer for the community.
I'm not a DEV, just a stupid user. (and i do mean stupid), but I wanted to thank you for such a generous offer. That is really cool of you, dude.
Not a problem. Just went to download and was annoyed by one of those pay or wait to download sites and thought wait a second...lol

Ahh yes. That makes us brothers. I'm no dev but rather a very dangerous ppc pda owner. Completely moronic and stupid as they get. I usually have to read instruction 10 times on how to install apk files. So stupid I am. Worse than noobs. I once thought ppc stood for "pay per contract". But thxs for the offer.

I can only speak for myself but I frequent the General section a lot. I haven't given much input there but I do frequent it as there are really some decent topics being discussed. I have read other threads here were the OP says "well if I had posted in General then no one would see it". I disagree! Anyways I mean its easy to get things seen or heard, I mean cmon you just have to use your head a little tiny bit. For example if this was my thread. I would have posted it in the General section. Then I would have PMed the less than ten devs and themers we have in the Epic forums and told them to check out my thread. Then I would put the info in my sig. Maybe bold letters or colors. Its really not that difficult. Putting it here in the wrong section just promotes more incorrectly posted threads thus congesting the DEV section. The OPs intentions are good and I compliment him but he still needs to know where it belongs.
I'd prefer having threads posted in the wrong section to having to read more smoothone drivel. Every single friggin thread this guy is in there. Painful.

You do realize that most of these ROMs are 150mb or so in size? That means that only 1000 downloads and you're bandwidth for the month would be gone...and trust me, that will happen pretty quickly.
I'm also going to guess that since you've just got a small virtual hosting account and not a dedicated server, that you will have a pay additional charges per gig of transfer used over your 150 gig.
There's a reason why these files get posted to the free file hosting services

I believe they have 150 gigs of space and unlimited transfer. If anything I'd be concerned that the host would start throttling bandwidth... making for very slow download speeds. Not like the free file hosting services are fast tho...

Definitely correctly posted in the development forum. He wasn't offering free web hosting for anyone, just devs who have a rom they need a spot for.
And nice offer. If I had a rom to host I would be most appreciative.
By the way, there is a report post button that I have seen repeatedly mentioned by mods. That is the proper way to deal with a post you feel is in the incorrect place. You know how I know this? Because it exists...

My storage is 150GB. My transfer is unlimited It's a 1&1 linux hosting package.
To add my own experience to this...
I am hosting the Bonsai rom on my server, and while I expected it would use quite a bit of my bandwidth, I never expected that it would use around 100GB in 2 days.
I had to request that some mirrors be included to offset the bandwidth a bit (I only have 200GB a month BW). My Webalizer is showing 1574 hits for Bonsai v2.0.0.
It's a good thing you have unlimited BW, but I'm guessing that the download speeds will be throttled.
I mean, for $7 a month, I wouldn't expect they will let you rape their servers (bandwidth is expensive you know).

seriously i think its a great idea and if i ever get proficient enough to make my own ROM id be all about this idea, and as a end user of your guys awesome work it would be nice to not have to jump through the dumb wait 500 bajillion sec before you can start stuff.....
