Last night with Hero - Hero CDMA General

Well I had to do it because of connection issues. Sprint service sucks here and I have tried numerous things but just couldn't get past having terrible reception. So moving over to Verizon. Didn't have enough the other day when I ordered phones from amazon, so I got 3 Droids for a penny. Will probably upgrade 2 of them within the month to and Incredible and the X. Love the Hero love the forums and help here, just cant deal with no service 99% of my time.

Have you tried using the vz prl?

Yeah been there done that. I figure if im in the middle of a city and cant even get 1 bar most of the time, and constantly roaming, well it's just too much of a pain in the butt. I am looking forward to messing with some of those droid roms and kernels with major clocking.

hey one Q... cant we switch the droid to sprint... i think its possible.....

yes, you can. They are both cdma. You need to program the baseband with sprint's network info, just use a hero to pull the config from.
not entirely related; since we have neither sprint or Verizon here in Alaska; if you are a sprint customer you roam on digitel (worst network in the state). if you are a Verizon customer you roam with ACS (best network in the state).

it's not possible to do it or i would have already! the only way is by esn cloning and that's illegal as ****. sprint doesn't allow any phone on their network that they do not sell.

**** is illegal? By that logic, Chipotle and the Breakfast Dollar Menu are also illegal.

actually no, its pretty great. My carrier is a small local company that offers me excellent service and coverage. (my house is -58dbm average and 1.2Mbit evdo)
I'm probably the only person on this forum that doesn't have free long distance service on their phone but that's my choice, my carrier offers national plans but for me everyone i call is here in Alaska so I prefer the cheaper plan.

Okay, so I've been doing some thinking... is Sprint just a bunch of assholes or what? They advertise the EVO as "The first 4G phone", but "plays nicely with 3G as well"... I think that's a load of **** fir the most part. For people like me, where when I looked on the Sprint coverage map for their 3G showed the best quality which is a load of crap.... my 3G speeds are terrible, luckily I have WiFi...but I'm not always home, so therefore it leaves me no choice but to use the horrible 3G that is mine. Voice/phone quality is amazing where I am, but really....if I can't even have decent speeds for 3G it's apparent that 4G may not even come to where I'm at.. it's just depressing, I feel like I'm paying for service that isn't entirely there, some of you may know what I mean...but yeah.. sucky part is that I can't cancel and go with someone else. I've had tmobile for years, never really had a problem with them, the evo was just so appealing...

Get over it u had 30 days u kept the phone so stop ur *****ing

Interesting.. What are these horrible speeds? I live in the 4g dead zone and average about 1.2mb/s not super fast but it works. Also, Sprint seems to treat people good when you have a legitimate issue and you let them know nicely. Hell, years ago they gave me 25% off my bill when my mogul kept breaking over and over... I used the crap out of it, was wearing out keyboards in weeks. Try to call them, there's nothing we can do for you here.
Not sure where you live but in Arlington, VA I get around 2 Mbps on 3G and 8 on 4G. I agree that you had 30 days to see if you liked the service or not.
jordant2 said:
I can understand what the op is saying BUT, Sprint still has the best overall pricing even after the $10 for no 4g coverage so I can't really complain. My 3g speeds here in the metro Detroit area are not so great though. I get about 700kbps downloads. Not the best but not the worst. I tried T-Mobile and the 3g was about 1.0mbps but the bill was $40 more a month. Not at all worth the trade off for an extra 300kbps. I really only use the evo for streaming pandora and casual surfing so I really don't do a lot of downloading or wifi tethering. But Sprint is by far the best overall service for the price.

Also in metro Detroit. I was with tmo for 9 years and Sprint's data coverage and speed is a huge improvement along with better pricing. Voice coverage is about the same. I've been with Sprint for about 6 months with no real complaints. Not to mention, yearly upgrades cuz I jumped on a shared plan and they're already premier members.

I agree with others. You had 30 days, which is more than enough time, to test the network. No carrier has excellent coverage everywhere. They all have dead zones or bad signal areas. If you didn't like the service in your area, why didn't you return the phone within 30 days?
I have no problems, at all, with Sprint. And coming to Sprint from T-Mobile, I can most definitely say that Sprint has the better network.

Here is how I see it. Alot of it is service area.....for me...T-mobile was great with customer sevice but the MOBILE / Cell service in Naples Florida.....well its spotty and overall sucks ass indoors as does AT&T (I'm thinking this has to do with GSM). CDMA has just, overall, been better. Problem with the other CDMA (VERIZON) is their plans are a huge rip off and so is the company. Poor customer service and magic bills........just like AT&T. Never had this problem with Sprint so far. I know what I'm getting EACH AND EVERY MONTH. But, on to the lecture.
1. 30 freakin' days. We all knew it. Therefore you could have seen the poor service the first two weeks and bagged the phone and contract.
2. The plan with unlimited data and 750 min to land lines......unlimited to cell networks - 80 bucks (WITH TAX). This includes the 10 $ BS we all pay for (Including myself) to NOT have 4g which is most of us. No one beats that. End of story No mystery 120 bucks to AT&T. I've had em all. Sprint, by far has the best plans for the money. If service in your area sucks......you should have noticed it early on. THAT BEING SAID.................
Enough of my lecturing !!! Here are some things to try if you haven't already.
1. Update your radio - or - try different radios to help your 3g signal, they do make a huge difference.
2. Update your PRI to 1.77
3. Update your profile
4. Update your PRL

I got one of these as well. It performs perfectly, as advertised. It hooks into your high-speed internet and has a GPS receiver (to make sure you're not creating sprint networks in other countries, etc).
I called Sprint, said I couldn't get reception in my place and that, if there was nothing they could do about it, I was going to switch to Verizon (which is true). The guy looked at my account, saw that I had an unlimited plan, said I was a "high-valued customer" and waived all fees.
I did have to call and dispute fees that were added anyway, but they fixed those. Now I get 5 bars as opposed to none in my apartment.

AirRave is a mini cell tower - so to speak - that plugs into your existing highspeed internet for VOIP calling. When the phone leaves its range, it attempts to hand the call to the tower. Keep in mind that they do take a line even if they do give it to you for free. Repeaters are a little pricey and will probably always be, not to mention I don't think they work for 3g - just 1x

Yeah they cancelled it awhile ago and I was pissed, as much as I tried to haggle with customer support.
At about the 30 day mark into my phones use I just could barely hang on with 1 bar in the house, they told me I had missed the mark to get one by about a week.
You can rent one from them for like $10/20 but that's messed up.
Now just crossing my fingers the 2.2 update will bring a better radio signal, but plywood walls suck.

Dan Hesse would probably get on his knees for the iPhone. $69.99 for the iPhone 4 on the Everything Data plan would take Sprint to new heights.
I just don't want it crippling the network. I can see using my upgrade for it if nothing makes me want to leave the evo. Can you imagine the craigslist price on launch?

You bring up a good point. I can't see how they could justify a $10 fee on a 3G phone. Lets pretend that the iPhone is a sure thing if they want it, I could see them either being greedy as hell and attaching the fee anyway, or not carrying it until there's a 4G version. If it's the latter, you probably wont see a iPhone on Sprint until they (if they every)change to LTE or Apple includes a WiMax version (which is unlikely).

Forgive me, I come from the GSM side of cellular, but why wouldn't this be possible? I can take an AT&T iPhone (800/1900MHz) and run it on T-Mobile (1900MHz). It should be possible to flop any Verizon (800/1900MHz) to Sprint(1900/2100MHz). Again, I am fairly new to the CDMA side of mobile so it is quite possible I am missing something obvious.

CDMA doesn't have SIM cards (well at least not here). You have to activate your phone via the carrier and ESN number of the phone. Sprint will only activate ESNs that are in their system (just Sprint phones).

That's the iPhone product cycle in general. There were probably a ton of people who bought AT&T iPhone 4's today despite the looming unveiling of the iPhone 5.
Funny how my thread got epically trashed by noobs and trolls, yet this thread that is discussing the same thing seems clean. inb4 trolls log on and start acting like retards.
As far as ESN cloning goes, from what I know, its only illegal if you use it avoid your payments and do deceptive things with it, but if you are actually paying for your service, then i don't think you can get in trouble for it.
The only reason ESN was even made illegal was to stop people siphoning money from the companies and such, but since you own both the device and the service plan, i dont think they can do anything to you. And im pretty sure if the cdma iphone were to be dropped, it would be unlocked within matter of hours, and then modified for sprint and all the other cdma services within a matter of days.
What i want to know, is if someone can actually hardmod the phone to enable sprint wimax, or verizon lte on it? (most likely not since iOS is closed source, but still possible)

Changing the ESN is a very gray area. BUT changing the operating frequency of a transmitter is a whole other ball of wax(which you would going between Sprint, and Verizon or AT&T, and T-Mobile. Once you change the operating frequency that the transmitter was certified for it loses it's FCC Type Acceptance. It is no longer in the eyes of the FCC a legal phone. Now doing it to equipment on bands outside the cellphone allocations the FCC really doesn't monitor, or enforce unless someone complains. Fart around on aircraft, cellphone, and govt/military you will be paid a very personal visit by an FCC agent (and in this day and age the local swat team, and reps from various three lettered agencies).
FYI the only FCC licensed radio operator that can modify transmitters (or build for their personal use) for operation (within spec) on their allocated frequencies are Radio Amateurs. Once that radio has been modded it can no longer be used outside the Radio Amateur Bands.

I dont think so.
You can have your evo run off of verizon's towers with a prl hack

There's no legal way to do it.
You would have to fake your esn number and such.

Both vzw and sprint use CDMA... no simcards involved.
To OP: No, verizon requires the ESN to be already present on their database (same way as sprint) before activating the device.
The process is likely the same as it is to get the evo to work on boost, cricket, or other cdma providers.
I haven't done this personally, nor do I know anyone who has, but in theory, it seems like it should.

Boost is owned by Sprint so it makes some sense that you could cross those phones.
Not sure about cricket but it's my guess that they don't lock down their esns.
The only way I've ever heard of using a Sprint/Verizon phone on either network is with esn spoofing and it's not legal, at all.
Until carriers allow other phones ont heir networks it's a no-go. Except as said above by changing ESN (illegal) or having one hell of an inside connection. The ESN would have to be added to their database of accepted devices. Like I said...a hell of an inside connection would be needed.
You said it bro! Spoof was the word I was looking for. Will require a donor phone though on the network you want to use it on.

It's not illegal to change your ESN as long as you are paying for the fees. The legality comes in when you try to clone ESN in order to avoid fees.
But even if OP were to clone the ESN, the frequency's don't really match and would have problems working
And if this was remotely feasible, I'd have a Verizon iPhone 4 on Sprint right now.

The EVO Flashed to Verizon

I'm more than likely posting this in the wrong section but it regards to an EVO so I apologize in advance....
Would it be possible to flash a Sprint EVO onto verizons network I want the EVO I looked into the thunderbolt and I think its nothing but garbage just my opinion, I had it for 10 days and it was so bad I went and returned it and went back to my incredible since I don't have 4g in North Dakota it would be an issue I got my MSL code from Verizon. I've seen the EVO on boost and pageplus unfortunately I only have IDEN coverage for boost no cdma or I would just go that route. So would this be possible??? I know there are sites claiming they have the files that will make it work but I'd rather not pay for something that might not work. I know what your thinking why not just switch to Sprint well we don't have coverage here. So my choices are Verizon, AT&T, & Nextel. Nextel is out of the question for the fact I believe its still completely IDEN which means not smartphones except for a blackberry and there is no way I will switch to a blackberry I had a hard time switching from winmo 6.5 to android.

Yuppers... Frowney face indeed
Ugh... That's what I came across in my six hours of searching, but didn't they pass a law in 2006 that made it legal to switch carriers and flash it, since its your device you paid for it you should be able to do with it as you please within reason of course, also would it make a difference if the esn/meid is clean?
I mentioned pageplus in my op its a prepaid company owned by (Verizon) the evil V as I call it lol I know they got it boost which is as we all know is a prepaid company of Sprint which is seeming more and more like the best of the "big 4" soon to be the "big 3"

It is legal to do so, but the carrier has to approve the device and one big thing that won't be approved is the Sprint logo on the front of the device. Also I could be wrong, but for basic network coverage not counting Wimax since Verizon doesn't use Wimax, I believe Sprint and Verizon use different frequencies but I could be wrong.
There was a time when Sprint announced that they will activate any Verizon phone on their network. I can't remember if Verizon sued them, or if Sprint backed out. It was a very huge deal.

that's for their "4G", not the CDMA 1x/EvDO spectrum
Ah, that's true, I totally blanked on the fact that he doesn't have 4g coverage anyway and that issue isn't on the table
Thanks for all the input guys, maybe I can find a friend of mine that happens to have an EVO they would be willing to let me borrow to try this out on, and update prl and everything else and see if I can get to VZW ota programming prompt and if I can get that far, I should be close to in the clear see if I goes through completely or somehow rewrite the esn/meid's which probably isn't legal but I'm sure can be done lol, and browsing around early this morning I found out I can get page plus coverage haha but I refuse to give up my unlimited data, I know there is a way to flash it to them though.. but thank you again for all the input

It's possible. I'm on Verizon PRL right now as we speak. I dial *2 and I get Verizon customer service

Yeah but that's data roaming, little different.
It's possible just a few things you need:
1) Verizon has to approve it for their network
2) You would need your number AND your MIN as well as your cellular email address: it would be something like your10digit [email protected] verizon has for .com
3)Your MSL so you can program the phone for verizon (if you're rooted, MSL Reader from the Market will get that for you)
4)Verizon PRL
My evo is programed for cricket. AND the Evo can be programmed for boost. I went with cricket because there is no grey area there. Just program my phone for cricket, call them up and have them add my Evo's ESN.
Cricket was more than willing to give me the information I needed (MIN is the only thing I needed from them) and I got someone (who i guess works for cricket, one of those cricket forums) to add my ESN to my account. (you don't even have to change the radios, just change the PRL)
I look at it like this, Verizon takes a loss on every phone sold. Well every postpaid carrier does. So I would think they would jump at the chance for you to save them some money while spending money with them in the process.
How would I get them to accept the esn and accept the EVO for their service? I'm on a prepaid account now so I would be paying retail anyway...
