Damn...again I have the problem that my HD2 is extremly slow......so slow that I'm not able to switch to the home tab anymore, the whole sense is not working. I only have the chance to press the windows button to open the programs menu which works fine, so I thought I should see something in the task manager which causes a lot of CPU usage, but there is nothing special to see, at processes there is no task which uses more than 5%, so why is it still slow? I already removed the battery several times, but it doesn't help, I can start the phone, then I can use the home tab and sense, but after like 30 seconds, its slow again.......
What else can I check?
I think it's some update; is the data connection established when it starts to get slow? (Could be some ActiveSync task which should not run)
Try to deactivate sense and check, if your hd2 is also slowing down.
When everything ist fine after disabling it seems so, that your manila is messed up =)
-> Hardreset
How can I disable sense? And why is it messed up? I mean I haven't changed anything during the last weeks and also I'm a little bit to lazy for hard resetting my phone every 1-2 month because everytime something happens which causes an extreme slow down......Also I hate to reinstall all that stuff again
remove SD card and check again!
definitely sounds like a sense issue.....
are you sure its not the"twitter bug" thats going around just now....
try logging out of twitter and see if you still get the freezes...

go to settings->today->items: uncheck htc sense
i didnt said that it have to be messed up, was only a guess.
but when everything works fine after disabling it should be a manila/sense problem.
You could also have a look at your taksmanager if there are processes with high cpu/ram usage.

Mine hangs quite often, when typing SMS very fast. Also it hangs constantly, when browsing in landscape mode with opera. Very, very annoying.

Tried hard reset? Tried reflashing the ROM? Tried getting a replacement?
Mine hangs often but I can live with it as it is my secondary device and I don't use it much.
Mine hangs occasionally but i found most of the times was "Active Sync" fault, simply close it and it stops hanging
So far, more than 50% of you are saying it never hang even once. This is amazing! I had never thought in my widest dream that it is so good.
I've mine since the 5th of November... so it's about 3 weeks today... and I’ve already forgotten where is the Soft Reset button...
I think that you should include in the poll, another option, something like the 2nd and 3rd options, but that it bothers us.
Since we paid a lot of money for HD and it does not work as it should, it is really annoying and it bothers us.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortuntely, posters are not able to make this change. Can our moderator help?
Never
I clicked 'never hangs'.
Strictly not true. Have found that if CorePlayer is open, and i try to manually switch off, it won't. Subsequent attempts also fail (even after closing CP), and the only fix is to press the power button a few seconds and turn off. (i guess this is one 'below' a soft-reset but dunno).
Also strange is that if it auto-shuts down with CP open, generally it turns off, but when turned on CorePlayer has no video, and must be closed and opened to fix.
i guess the 2 issues are related to Coreplayer's incomplete Qtv driver - and will be soon fixed.
Else has never hung (2 weeks use) which is brilliant compared to my last PDA (ipaq) - tho' it was often the fingerprint reader that hung. btw i would pay more for the HD with biometric security. i think this is needed, given the amount/type of data most people have on their devices it should nearly be illegal to make 'em without .
I've select never, however I've had a couple of application issues... 1 with network settings and the other with a 3rd party application which both caused application crashes.
How are you defining a hang? WinMo crash screen (application dies) or device becomes unusable and requires a soft reset? My phone has never crashed that bad I've never had to reset it.

Freezes. Not responding to user action, or so slow and unuseable that it requires a soft reset.
So far, one out of four are reporting that freezing occurs frequently, but more than 90% of us are not bothered by this. Any more vote?
Interesting poll!
But i have to mention, i'm absolutly sure the freezing problem is on every HD. It's just a question of the installed software, the running applications and their kind of use.
If i play the whole day SPB sudoku i have not to report any freezings and i'm lucky. But the HD turns me crazy while writing the whole day SMS with permanent freezes.
Just a joke!
surely all these freezing problems will be fixed once we get cooked roms?

On my Athena, the freezing problem largely disappeared with ROM updates from HTC, but the cooked ROM were far more stable.
So, I believe the same will happen here.
I've had mine for a week now and get regular freezes - mostly when using opera and particularly with opera in landscape mode. Also get freezes when typeing emails although these usually sort themselves out if I'm prepared to wait a while. Every now and again it seems like the wireless connection stops working (i.e. the progress bar for loading a page freezes and won't load any further although all the other apps seem to be ok) - soft reset seems to solve each time.
The most annoying problem for me though at the moment is that I have to close all applications before connecting to my laptop via usb or the running apps just crash as soon as it connects - again probably an activesync issue I guess.
I have never used a cooked rom before but you guys seem to swear by them so hopefully one will come out which sorts these issues - or maybe HTC will post an update.

Have you tried Netfront browser to see if that works better?
potential Freezing solution-worked for me
Don't laugh......this has worked for me. Go into Settings-systems-screen-clear type-uncheck enable clear type
I also have no aftermarket keyboard loaded-just using what came with device....no more freezing during SMS.
I cant get the auto name feature to dump into the SMS or email field when I type the name though

For those of you who became so frustrated with the freeze and voted the last option, could you all try out this solution and see if it work?
Just wondering if anyone else out there has similar problems with the occasional Freeze on there HD2. Mine occurs maybe once every few days.
I am running Xanny's Evolution 1.4 but have had the problem with other roms.
Radio 2.0.8 with 576mb hack
Seems to be when I am coming out of file explorer (Other Apps as well) into the Sense Homescreen I get the freeze. Symptons
Title bar still shows previous app (eg, File Explorer)
Screen otherwise is 100% sense.
5% clock time change (Eg just starting)
Weather animation just starting.
I only have installed
DST Time Patch (Live in West Australia)
Core Player 1.3.6
TomTom
File Explorer Ext
Phone Log.
Radio still seems to be working. Eg pressing a button will light up buttons and they turn off after x seconds.
Ringing the phone doesn't send it to message bank. It just rings out. My phone does nothing to indicate incoming call.
First test was to flash a factory rom first (1.4.3). Froze about a day latter.
I then performed an MTTY. Again froze about 2 days latter.
Current test I have disabled weather animation. Has not crashed since. Been 5 days.
My HD2 freezes to, running LynxEX 1.3 WWE, radio 2.08.50. I installed the
Rom in 01.03.2010, everything was OK for a few days until yesterday when it started to froze more and more often.
Radio is working but I can not answer because the screen and buttons are not responding.
I am still going with out a freeze. Disabled weather animation and seems good. Will leave it another week.
Due to it seeming to be caused when redrawing the Sense homepage and multiple animations I took a punt.
When does yours freeze?
Welcome to windows mobile!
Its a common thing, no need to worry.
If you have apps installed on your SD card then try to end them normally i.e. from the app itself, if you use a task manager to kill it it may leave corrupted files on the SD card which may also freeze the phone.
Waiting for Android.........................
Mine never freezes!
Mine hangs 40% of the time after unlocking the screen.....
Official 1.66 ROM UK
It happends when I try to do something fast, after I unlock the screen, or use coreplayer. So i uninstaled coreplayer, until now it works !!! ???
Now i miss coreplayer and would try to skip the automat screen locker.
I am a long time Win mobile users.
Gone from Polaris, HD and now HD2
This freeze is quite specific. Just on the homepage.
Anyway, Its been a week now and still no freezes. Looks like it was a combination of multiple animations causing a conflict.
I get various other cases of it slowly grinding to a halt then responding very very slowly. Eg 30 secs for an unlock. Usually core player.
Also, no need to install to SD card. Heaps of room on internal.
It seemed to freeze when coming out of File Explorer. Might have been an issue introduced with the File Explorer Extension addon??
Mine freezes from time to time, but always on screen lock.
lock is unresponsive, do a reset (battery removal)
then sense only responds to the left portion of the screen, several resets later it will come back to normal.
anyone else seen this ?
Freeze
Mine also would freeze every once in awhile? I turned off weather for other cities, has not froze for, this is 3rd day? Wierd?
I've noticed a few 'freezes' on the 'unlock' screen as well. I think it has to do with the phone searching for a network; when it locks it was switching from
3G to H or to G.
Just to register another user with freeze issues. 1.66 Stock WWE Rom with whichever radio is bundled with it.
I haven't had an issue in the 4-5 weeks I've had the phone until I decided to give Twitter a go using the HTC Peep application. I then got 3 or 4 freezes in 24 hours. Uninstalled Peep from the Sense slide tabs and later on that day installed moTweets, again keeping it memory resident and automatically checking for tweets once an hour. It froze again last night.
Now I'm (fully) closing moTweets every time I've finished with it, and so far no freezes. It's only been 14-15 hours but we'll see.
Zef.
I keep getting problems myself on my TMOUS. The phone has frozen over 6 times in the past 2 days I've owned it. Its quite annoying. Everything is stock. No custom roms or anything. I've reset it to factory settings 3 times.
Might have tracked it down
Mine seems it may be related to File Explorer.
Coming out of or exiting file explorer. Also crashes if fire explorer is running and plug a usb cable in.
Running file explorer extensions. Might be the cause.
Mine started freezing for no apparent reason a few days ago.
Using a custom rom for months with no problems then all of a sudden freezes.
Tried some different roms and they all seem to do it now.
Only way is a hard reset for me, soft reset it freezes too.
Personally I'm thinking its a hardware fault seeing how it was a sudden occurance and doesnt matter which rom image is on there.
Unless its a radio problem, not tried changing that yet.
Was it while doing a certain thing?
Start taking note of what you were just doing then post. IT might help shed some light.
Mine was getting to twice a day. I then noted what was installed and changed my behaviour. And it started crashing less.
Also change the SD card. Noted a thread where the SD card is related to strange behaviour. Make sure the temp one gets a full format.
Best idea is to run your phone as minimally as possible (Software and app's for as long as possible. Slowly introduce behaviour and applications and note when it starts to become unstable.
Okay happened about 5 times today, each time it was while trying to recieve or make a call.
Text messaging is fine, internet sharing is fine, only while making calls
radio 2.06.51.07 i actually thought i had put 2.08 on a while back so going to change to 2.07 or 2.08 and see if that works.
updated to radio 2.07 and reflashed energy rom. dont hold out much luck.
seems to get stuck still on soft reset. so has to be hard reset everytime
oh and thats with no apps loaded
lets disable the whole phone... and cross ur fingers for someone out there who can save this phone from windows... period.. stop saying i disable this and it works better now. disable that and seems pretty good now, BS. u know is BS.. have all those problems.. i still dont understand how people still buying HD2!!!! omg... .
think i have found one of my problems
incompatable radio to rom image
or failing that trying the reformat Task 29

lol.... whateva.
Can somebody with the know how make a little program which litterally only performs one task: kills the process services.exe.
The reason for this is it is the cause of many soft resets in a day. Sometimes not even fixing the slowdown anyway and causing the famous black screen of death.
But as soon as i go to sktools and use the processes tool and kill the process phone goes back to being how it should! However because the phone goes into major slowdown it takes ages for the sktools processes program to load and then hard to select services from the list because of the lagging etc so it would be nice just to have a link that i could put on my quick links and when phone goes to melt down just press this magic button which saves the phone being hurled at a wall!
It needs to be called Meltdown Override or something!
This is a serious request as it would make HD2 use a much more pleasant experience!
Many thanks
This is pretty easy to do AFAIK...
If nobody else does it, I can do it when I have some more free time ...
I would appreciate this so much!
I think I may even use AEB to assign it to a long press of the back key or something
But, does services.exe auto-starts again? Because you could have some problems if you kill it and don't start it again...
Yer it does straight away but not running at 90% + CPU.
I find it unlikely that services.exe is really the culprit here, but rather a service installed on your phone that is misbehaving. If you find out which service is causing the problem, and then uninstall or disable it....

This guy is right...
Ive only just installed a new ROM voda UK 1.72 so I have next to no programs installed at the moment so I don't see what could cause it.
The main time this happens is when left charging over night and when you go to use it in the morning it's completely screwed. Soft reset doesnt fix it it just goes to black screen of death so then u have to take the battery cover off and reset again. The only thing i have found to get it to a useable state again is to kill process services.exe, and then its fine again. Once by doing that it stopped weather update and text messaging from working but atleast when i then did a soft reset things where still fine and those two things worked again and no laggy phone.
I kno it seems stupid to just kill a process and not find the problem but i cant see what the problem could be considering how recently i hard reset the phone (which i did 3 times in total to see if it got rid of the problem).
Just forget that ROM and go back to a working one? Seems easy to me... don't always need to have the latest or highest version number, just something that works... If 1.72 doesn't work for you, don't use it!
I would if it wasn't for the fact that after doing the annoying procedure in the morning of killing process "services.exe" then soft reseting, it runs the quickest i have ever been able to use the device on any ROM before it
You know that services.exe is one of the main parts of your phone-funcionality (calls, sms, etc.)?
As you said you experience it in most cases in the morning... Have u got GAlarm installed?
If yes --> Did you check the RegKey MidnightWakeup=True and change it to false?
My Girlfriends TD2 had the same issue. CPU usage by services.exe was often around 70-90% until i applied this change...
Services.exe is just like svchost on a windows-machine, it just hosts a bunch of services. So most likely its a service that has gone crazy.
I've been using my HD2 for the last month or so and of course it is awesome. However, I've noticed after a week of it being ON (basically where I don't turn it off) it starts to slow down programs here and there...
With Swype its quite obvious, the snake/tail when swyping is slow to respond. But when I turn it off and back on.. and use the swype... its super fast which is basically the speed it should be...
I do the whole task manager thing, turning everything off... but I'm sure there is something else in the background slowing it all back down... what is it? or at least what can I do to make it stay fast?
Try:
clearRAM- http://www.htcaddicts.com/download.php?id=165
You should also look at application's to clear your temporary files...i use cleartemp and it works very well...
I also noticed that even though cleanram works fantastically, sometimes a soft reset is necessary! add a soft reset button on your quicklinks and you wont feel it to be too much of an inconvenience...search for MySuspend here..
Is there any way to do a soft restart with this phone? Sometimes it seems to be running slowly even after I kill all the tasks. I know i can do it by taking the battery out but that is a pain as I also have to take the case out. Any thoughts? I am coming from a Windows Mobile phone and you just had to click a button to do that.

Android is nothing like WM. In fact, you don't even need to ever use task killer. It only exists in Android to make former WM users comfortable. Android manage dormant apps on its own without killing your memory.
To soft reset, just power the phone off by holding the power button and selecting power off.
It'll take a bit to get used to it but trust me, I went from years of WM to Android 1.5yrs ago and there is no need to manage tasks like in WM.
android automatically kills the app that you hardly use and free up the memory.
also, task killer wont help you save battery.
I would love an app that simply reboots the phone with a click of an icon. Nothing available without being rooted it seems though.
I can't tell you how many times I shut off the phone and then forget to turn it back on...

Hexto, thanks for explaining this to me. It is a pretty foreign experience. I have a follow up question for you though.
Sometimes I notice that my phone seems to be running slow, choppy, or unresponsive. I will try to dial someone and it doesn't do anything. Now on a Windows Mobile phone that would be a good time to just restart it. On this phone I have done Advanced Task Killer and killed all but a few programs and it gets noticeably faster. Doesn't that mean that it isn't managing the tasks well enough? Once or twice even that didn't make it fast enough so I took the battery out and started it back up to get it back to normal.
What am I misunderstanding?
