[Q] Use only 3 buttons for Android? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I just replaced the digitizer on my T-mobile HD2 myself. I would HIGHLY recommend that if you can pay someone to do it its worth it. Anyway I now only have 3 working buttons across the bottom row: Home, Back, and Call End. My question is is it possible to customize my Android build so I only need the 3 buttons or am I just screwed?
Also thanks to all the devs for their work on the Android HD2 development. I know I dont need those keys in win mobile but I prefer Android. And taking the phone apart again or ordering new parts is a risk I dont really want to take.
Feel free to ask questions about taking the screen apart as well.
Oops! I think I posted this in the wrong area! My bad!

Why do you need to replace the digitizer if it's not broken?

sorry, i'm curious: what's the 'digitizer' and what is it good for?

The digitizer is the screen in between your fingers and the lcd. It detects your finger movements. Its usually what breaks when you drop your phone. On my phone I broke the digitizer and ordered a replacement digitizer on ebay and replaced it myself. Not an easy process or pretty but I can say that I did it. However in the process I did break 2 buttons and my wifi signal strength sux now and I get some flash type thing on my screen occasionally. I also almost broke my volume control putting it all back together. Its not a fun process. I am just going to look on ebay and try to get lucky through it for a slightly used phone.

ah ok, thanks mate

touch screen not working in center

hey guys, i have a big problem. the center of my MDA's screen will not work. I noticed this while playing warfare incorporated.... I have re-flashed it and it goes to the align screen step and obviously i cant get past this point.........
Any ideas, im sure its hardware but what would make just the center die?
i was just thinking of selling my phone (work provides free crackberry) and this happens.... anyone want an MDA with a (partially) bad touchscreen?
please let me know any ideas you may have.
Thanks guys
Try this...
slide the stylus all around the edges of the screen. I dunno why, but that usually works.
It kinda sounds like your touch screen is going bad. It can be replaced, and there nt to expensive. Try ebay!
Hi Tsumi,
I am also having this issue with a UK XDA Mini S that is about 13 months old.
If I go into 'Notes' and draw Horizontal straight lines across the screen they are straight at the top and bottom but curve around the middle of the screen, very annoying. Brilliant phone apart from that.
no go
i tried the "around the screen" thing and that didnt work.... i think i may just have to sell it. I dont want to replace the screen b/c thats just more money spent on a phone im going to sell..... I hate to do it, I love this phone, it has saved me from boredom soooo many times.... (sniff) ill miss it.
Its like 14 bucks for a new digitizer. I am sure that it will be more than a 14 buck difference in sale price if you fixed it.

Wizard parts, where to buy

im looking for someone to direct me to a place where i can get parts for my Wizard..
I dropped my phone the other day, and the power button seems to have broken off the circuit board, this has happened before as well i just resoldered itmyself, but it has come to the point where the leads are about to fall off the switch..
And recently i also ended up breaking the rocker switch thats required to adjust volume on the phone and the speaker.
I need a place to get those 2 switches.. anyone have any idea where to look!!
thought about a new phone, but i just cant live without a touch screen and keyboard now i want my wizard back up and working
Thanks
First...help save my phone is the LAST thing you want to type if you want help. We will post simply to tell you to read the damned stickies. I am assuming then, that your phone was not insured. If it was in fact insured, it probably can be replaced using insurance, or I'd suggest ebay or craig's list. Good luck finding parts.
whoa sorry man.. i was just having a little fun.. didn't mean to be demanding there or anything..
I did have a look in some of the stickies, and faqs infact i posted in the buy sell trade broken thread too.. i thought id just ask again if anyone has had any luck buying parts from other sources..
Yes it is not insured..
and HTC america doesnt seem to have the parts.
that's all no need to get angry.. i apologize for my topic
I apologize...I was not angry, I simply was trying to say that we get so many "help..." threads, that often they get passed over, or looked at simply for us to say RTF stickies. I think you will get a better chance of help for parts if you topic'd it as such.
I still think that barring the busted wiz thread, ebay or craig's list would be your best bet. Also, you may check HoFo...they used to have a thread for folks selling busted devices.
oh ok... sorry about that then
yeah ive ben making the nightly rounds on hofo, craigs rfd, ebay not much luck the ones people are selling are working condition lol and a good chunk of change. I guess ill keep scouring.. if i find nothing i might just head over to a few small electronic shops and se if i can find a different switch to replace it with..
honeslty i was checking out a few other phones, and for those on a budget, feature wise you just cant beat the wizard. i dont think i could ever go back to a non touch screen phone.

'Patchy' backlight - what happen?

I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

Hmmm, good point. I have a custom rom on it so mine probably would be void too right? If I change it back to the original rom it should be ok though presumably?
Thanks anyway - glad this is not me.
I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

Ah yes, so you did. Sorry I was looking at the flag on your profile not your location
I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....

N1 digitizer replacement

So I bought a digitizer replacement kit on ebay for my N1. (I dropped it and my screen shattered.) I saw the iFixit teardown on the N1 and figured it'd be easy enough to do myself. The kit comes with tools to open it, but no adhesive to mount the new digitizer.(like the iPhone kits)
Basically I was just wondering what I should use to stick the new digitizer back in. Any advice from someone who's already done it would be great too.
Edit: Got the digitizer installed fine, phone booted, I giggled like a schoolgirl aaaand.. Couldn't unlock my phone. It wont respond to touch. Took it apart again to make sure it was connected properly... So now my only assumption is the digitizer I bought was defective.
Any help would be appreciated..
try asking the ebay seller
Thanks, I'll try that. Any other ideas?
maybe ask an electronics repair shop near you
RellikZephyr
Well I got it installed but it wont respond to touch.. Defective part?
I guess you've made sure it's plugged in right? Would definitely double check that

Yep I did. I contacted the seller on eBay and waiting for a reply. Unless you guys can think of something else I did wrong in the installation I'm sticking with it being defective.
have other people replaced the digitizer successfully on the N1? or perhaps it is some software difference that the new digitizer needs to be "read" by the software, but the OS is looking for the "old" digitizer still...i'm talking out my arse BTW..

I've seen a few people posting here saying they've done it, and I know one guy took pictures of the process. I understand what you're saying and it sounds logical enough, but I can't imagine the parts would be any different to cause that sort of problem.. Assuming the part I bought is legit.
Either way the seller should let me return it if the second one they ship out doesn't work.
i replaced my screen and digitizer yesterday using ebay tutorials i found. pm me and ill share but i bet you used the same ones. its a very delicate process. sometimes you have to be tough with it but at the same time not break the little guy. the only problem i could think of would be your connection. the only thing i fudged on minr was not cleaning the lcd before placing it back in. now i have two large fingerprints in my top right under my screen when i dim it.

I cast... THREAD NECROMANCY!!!
I believe I have the correct adhesive (3M double-sided sticky tape of some small sort), but I'm wondering if anyone has a better idea on how to get the old sticky gunk off of the LCD aside from using rubbing alcohol? Thoughts? Kthxbai.
EDIT: Also, did you ever get your phone working again?

HD2 for $70?

Guy has a HD2 with the MIUI ROM and says the SD card slot isn't working and the screen is sometimes unresponsive. I figured probably just wipe it all and start over until he told me he recently took it apart and decided it was too complicated for him to deal with so he slapped it all back together. He seems to know what he's talking about quite a bit. Is it even worth me getting it for $70 or is this a joke. What do you guys think?
HD2 screens tend to get unresponsive after a while of use. It seems some connectors of the digitizer run underneath the Red Dial hardware button. Eventually though, all HD2 screens will die. The digitzer can be replaced, but it is quite difficult to do apparantly. Also, digitizers are like 70$. So no, I do not recommend you buying that phone. You would only have to spend more money to get it fixed (that is, if you could even fix it).
Agreed. Too troublesome to replace the digitizer. Will end up running you as much as if you bought a fully functioning used HD2.

I agree, only if you're not a techy skilled guy!
Thanks guys! I was willing to take it on but not after he pulled it apart. I've repaired a few phones before but one thing I hate is if it's previously been tinkered with. That's just a no no. You all are right, that $70 could nearly double and at that point I would have been better off getting another one. I really appreciate it.

And the digitizer on the HD2 is particular awful to change out. One of the main versions of it require heating it in an oven and prying it apart. Not exactly what I'm willing to do, in any case, unless the phone and parts are free.
hd2 70$ !!
sent u a pm !! !
I'd be willing to pay $70 for the working mainboard.

think you have to bake the phone in an oven to melt the glue to change the screen
no owen, lol. it's quite easy to do, at least it was on my diamond, who has the same assembly. a little hair drier is just what the doctor ordered...
change the screen take tons of works!
Yeah I ended up passing on it guys. I didn't have the phone in possession, was just getting advice while I was thinking of purchasing it. From what I understand, it's quite a bit of work replacing that screen, but a simple hair dryer like rape_artist stated would work, or a heat gun.
