I don't know guys but.. I'm a HARDCORE Evo Fan.. And this battle is not even fair..
That was a bump for the Epic, not a comparison of the two.
looks like the evo got dissed. I'm gonna test drive the Samsung epic see how I like it

I think I will also give the Epic a whirl. Just to see what the hype is about over the Hummingbird.
I was working with a guy today that had the AT&T Galaxy S. We compared phones, and we both decided that the EVO is better. The screen does look a little better on the Galaxy, but the .3" screen size is more of a noticeable difference than the screen itself.
Also, kickstand.
all the commercial made me want was a movie app, to rent/buy/watch movies! rwar come on netflix.
Wasn't really convincing.

I actually really, really, really want an Epic. Out of the Galaxy S phones, it has the most features. I guess I'm one of the few EVO owners that want a physical keyboard. I play emulators when I'm bored and I like typing with them (although I've learned to REALLY love swype). I also think the Epic is the best looking Galaxy S phone so far.
I don't see how you think it's a "toy" phone. Because of the weight? The Epic will be heavier than the other Galaxy S phones... and it's lighter because of the Super AMOLED screen. Other than that, it has most of the features, if not more than the EVO. And did you see it's benchmarks when overclocked to 1.2 Ghz? Holy **** balls....
The Epic is serious business. I can not wait But then... ya know... I'll have 2 phones. Weird....
Okay, the lady in the video states that the Epic can "video stream" and the EVO can not.
I've to TwonkyMedia Server on my phone and I stream to my Western Digital Live all the time. Isn't that the same thing???

Yeah, that's a marketing piece, talking up the things the new device has, it's one-sided as marketing stuff typically is.
You can add DLNA support to the EVO but you can't add HDMI out to the Epic so in reality that's a win for the EVO.
I'm a bit surprised Sprint is marketing the EPIC this way but I'm wondering if they just can't get enough of the EVO to meet demand so they are pushing the EPIC. Pure speculation though...

Actually the Galaxy S will have HDMI via the Micro USB port http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/galaxy-s-can-do-hdmi-out-via-micro-usb-port-1
Meh, I'll stick with my Evo. Am sure the screen is nice, but I'm not a big movie watcher / game player so I wouldn't put it to good enough use. Evo screen looks more than fine for someone in my boat. Couldn't care less about physical KBs anymore, seeing as it is the year twenty-ten.
But there is that hummingbird in there ... anyways, two formidable phones available from Sprint; I see it as more playing of the two demographics. There sure are KB heavy phone users still out there, so I could see this being attractive for some. Get yo' wiz touched!

I wouldn't think it'd be a 720p out. I don't think USB can carry that much data. In fact...I'm pretty sure it can't because I couldn't use USB to upload videos off of my old MiniDV camera.
I will buy HTC over Samsung every hour of every day.

You know... I read that article but forgot all about that. I wonder if anyone has tested this. $50 proprietary cable kinda hurts though.
As someone already mentioned I would be surprised if usb has the bandwidth to handle hdmi... they might just be using the usb connector (with an added pin or two) but not using the usb protocol to send the video out via hdmi.
By a show of hands how many people actually own a DLNA Tv?
Many of the people who compare the galaxy say it is not consistent with speed..its fast then sluggish..then fast..again, the support for evo is greater , touch wiz is ugly IMO.

I used a Vibrant over the weekend while waiting on my replacement EVO. It was a nice phone, I'd love to have that screen quality on my EVO, and it consistently scrolled smoother (damn you FPS cap!) but I was still glad to be rid of it and back to my EVO. I do expect that most users would like a galaxy just as much. And if you want a full KB, the Epic should be a home run.
I think its messed up that sprint gimped a lot of things on this phone whe its clearly capable to do more than the Evo. Imagine if we had the other galaxy s features, like 16gb ROM and tv out.
This phone would clearly outshine the Evo, but because of all the marketing behind the evo, sprint would lose money if everyone looked at the epic spec sheet (if it had 16gb and tv out, and 8 devices 4g tether) so they release a slightly gimped phone for $50 more so people would go to the evo. And because more people are using the evo, they capped the speeds on 3g for epic users to support he majority of evo users. Then a lilbit before they released the speedcap update to epics, dan hesse spoke about too much heavy data and might go to tiered plans.
I hate politics

All these "gimps" you say, and the Epic is still better than the Evo.
Also, tiered plans would be for new subscribers only, as current subscribers would be grandfathered.
Also, the Fascinate and the Epic are the 2 with smaller internal storage, as the Fascinate only has 2gb, and the Epic has 498. The Vibrant and the Captivate both have 16gb.
The upload speed on 3G was NOT CAPPED. Like I say in every thread, Samsung just sucks at programming.

No no I wasn't geting at the epic! I love this phone. But I'm saying, the epic was clearly dumbed down by sprint to support the evo. I wish they would've kept the original specs+ keyboard and LEDflash so the average consumer would've picked up this phone which would garner more support and I don't need tv out, but I'm sure if this phone had all the originals, people would've bought this at a much better ratio to the evo :/ I love my epic though (minus the gps that failed to work the 3 times I needed it :/). Its just sprint could've done better instead of nip tucking the epic to support the evo
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
So how is it in the best interest of sprint to gimp a phone on their own network to drive sales to a different device on their own network which costs less and has the same service fees? Maybe this is why they are doing so poorly, they have business plans thought up by 10 year olds.
It just doesn't make any sense. They intentionally "dumbed down" the epic to support the evo? Why?

Being that I own both I want to remind you that the EVO came "gimped" as well. <30fps and at the time, and per HTC, it could NOT be fixed as it was hardware limited, bt issues, some have gps issues as well, HDMI out ONLY works for video/pix in certain apps etc., etc.. The fact of the matter is the the HTC community is much larger, and more active, than the the Samsung Epic community. The EVO community has knocked most of these issues out of the park one by one. Where we have a handful of people on xda working on the epic, cruise by the EVO dev board and you will see there are easily 5x the people working on issues/releases/new things. That being said I notice that a lot of other HTC phones cross over... so if the EVO community doesn't fix something, another HTC phone comes up with a fix that is easily adapted to the EVO.
I do not agree. The epic is the most feature rich galaxy s phone. The little things you mention are programming errors or samsung decisions.

I wish there were as many devs working on the Epic as there are on HTC devices. That being said, I'm extremely thankful (and we, as Epic owners, are very fortunate) to have the talent that we DO have working on our devices as well. We DO have some extremely talented devs in this section. I'm tickled to see devs that came over from SDX that were so involved with the Moment. That phone had several plagues and the devs as SDX were hard core devoted to it. Some of them still are, and some of them have come over to play in the Epic park.
Thanks to all the Epic devs that we have. You all are truly talented and I sincerely appreciate all the time/effort that you put in so that I can enjoy my device that much more.

This has been the case for quite some time. I remember the TP2 was very similar. Devs were always taking features/tweaks/fixes from one device and making it work on the TP2 because we 'had to have it'..
I believe the Galaxy S phones will cross over as well eventually. We're at a slight disadvantage though in that regard as there are a whole slew of HTC devices that are similar and we only have 4 or 5 Galaxy S phones..
Either way, I'm thankful for the talented devs that we DO have working on these phones. And you never know, some of the HTC devs might just get tired of working on HTC's and wanna come play with something that's Epic
I am much happier with the epic than the G1 or the Moment that I had before. I don't thiink sprint is using this to boost sales of the evo. they are doing fine advertising the evo without the "sales" from people who don't want the epic.
The epic has better specs than the evo first off -- talking hardware. HTC has been in the game longer than sammy and as it as said earlier, the samsung programming team could use some help.

Did they cut down on some features out of box? yes..but its 100% does not have anything to do with the EVO..sprint doesn't make more or less money with whichever device you choose...so why would they go out of their way to do it?
But they do need to advertise Epic more...I mean I see commercials with Instincts on them and they don't even have them in stock...talk about wasting money...
The Epic's smaller internal flash wasn't a gimp... we got better flash than the the others did. The Vibrant and Captivate have the equivalent of a hardwired microSD card (SLOW). We have real, parallel-interfaced flash.
AT&T and T-Mobile went for big-number bling. Sprint listened to the engineers.
Personally, I think the Epic is off to a slow start against the Evo, but will ultimately win the marathon by virtue of being more maintainable by end users over the long run. Evo owners basically have to depend on hardware similarities with the Nexus One to get any kind of independent driver support. Samsung built the kernel using proper loadable kernel modules. The Evo's kernel is easier to remix today; our kernel is easier to blow away and build from scratch tomorrow.
Now... Samsung/Sprint DID totally gimp the Epic's keyboard by using large flat keycaps. They should have kept the pitch, but made the keycaps half as tall and wide. Or rounded them to make it easier to press the centers without pressing adjacent keys. They sacrificed genuine usability for the sake of making it thin and pretty in pictures.
I had the Evo, and moved to the Epic, and don't regret it at all. I miss some things(I loved Fresh Roms on the Evo) but I love the screen colors and brightness on the Epic and I think the camera is better. Once it gets 2.2, I think the Epic is a better choice.
Plus I love the Gorilla Glass(no screen prot needed), the better rear camera(no easy scratches) and the keyboard if I need to type out a lot of things(still use SwiftKey or Swype more than the hardware keyboard).
i do notice favor showed to evo though
Hey guys, I am a launch day Evo user. I really loved my phone but I lost it after some time. I went back to my Pre back up phone for a little while.
Last week Best Buy had the Epic for $125 with 2 year upgrade so I thought I'd try it. Well here I sit with the Epic and honestly I'm not impressed with the 4 rom options I have. I feel like the Evo had impeccable support and a great community. The Epic just seems like a joke.
Well now I have a brand new evo and a week old epic. Which should I keep? TIA

I didn't mention that I love the Epic screen and the HD video decoding.
I wouldn't base your decision on the 4 ROM options currently available for the Epic. I would guess the dev community is waiting for Froyo to get down to serious business. Having said that, the dev community for the Evo is going to give you a lot more options even in the long run. If that's your primary distinguishing factor, the Evo should be your choice, but I would expect the dev community to pick it up for the Epic after Froyo is released.
Samsungs support sucks plain and simple. Case in point, the Froyo debacle. We're right around the corner for Gingerbread and Samsungs top phone line still doesnt have a current OS. If its taken this long to get froyo imagine how long it'll take to get Gingerbread. Theyre always one step behind.
Yes the screen on that phone is ridiculous and Id love to have it but Id rather have a better OS and access to new apps. Let alone the dev community for the EVO is HUGE and one of the best Samsung dev's is running an EVO and building for it.
I have said this before and now I'm saying it again because my opinion hasn't changed. The EPIC has a fantastic looking display. But it feels cheap. Now someone once didn't know what cheap feels like. So when your walking around in Vegas and a smoking hot prostitute walks up and says she is $2,000 and you pick the lady in the alley for $50 bucks that is what cheap feels like. It also felt awkward to me for some reason. If I had a choice it would be the EVO.
Well, since you seem to be basing your decision on what the people here say... I say, go with the EVO.
But in reality, it's up to your own personal preference.
If customization is what your looking for, of course the evo. U could deal without hd decoding and if u want a pretty display just turn ur brightness all the way up lol. I love my Evo thats why u should continue to rock wit. Best HTC phone out.

The dev community for the Epic is sad compared to the EVO but yeah I'm sure they're waiting for froyo to get things going
I know other phone have support but I always buy a HTC phone usually has way more support from the likes of XDA
Was it just me? When I went to the Sprint store to compare the Evo to the Epic in person, I thought the Evo screen looked better. To me, the Epic had oversaturated colors, and I could see a dot-matrix like dithering effect on the SuperAMOLED screen.
It was most noticeable when browsing the web on the Epic; when I looked at the grey parts of the UI of the browser, I saw little dots and dithering everywhere.
Even though the scrolling and video was noticeably smoother on the Epic, the dithering of the screen bothered me so much that I bought the Evo.
I don't like the epics look just seems like a girl phone.

The sAMOLED screen used on the Epic is far from amazing. It has a blueish hue all over like it came straight out of planet pandora(Avatar). And text isn't anywhere as crisp as the evo.. Look closely and you can see thousands of small dots all over the screen.
Colors are nice but unnatural and over-saturated.
sAMOLED = Overrated marketing gimmick

Not so entirely accurate but we all have our own opinions on the subject the sAMOLED screen is nicer but it lacks a high enough pixel count to make it worth anything I work at sprint and I play with the epic all day and when I go home im not upset that I have an EVO its only 64000 colors compared to 16000000 but im not butthurt when I have hdmi out bad ass roms and as much support as I could ever need

What do you expect. They make toaster ovens, refrigerators, washing machines..... and phones. I'd say, from a support standpoint, they're probably stretched a little thin.
The galaxy s series of phones are going to receive the update directly to gingerbread most likely bypassing froyo where the EVO will not receive a second major update to gingerbread it happens only once in the lifetime of an android phone having said that; the EVO is better. STILL.

I would definately agree with everyone except one thing. The new Nexus S is confirmed to be a Samsung device. Once this happens there is going to be a flurry of developers working on the Samsung... So as far as community support and customization I think the Samsung could be there shortly with this new Nexus...
So I just switched from T-Mobile to Sprint and regretfully settled with the Samsung Epic. I'm not sure what it is but the build quality definitely feels cheap to me. I came from a HTC G2 and this is my first Samsung phone and also my first phone with a AMOLED screen. I'm within the 30 day exchange window for Sprint and I'm having trouble deciding between the HTC EVO and the Nexus S. On one hand I really like the Sense UI and I've always liked HTC's build quality/craftsmanship on phones and that 4.3" screen is oh so nice and on the other hand I like the screen quality on the AMOLED screens and wouldn't mind being on Gingerbread asap. Decisions decisions!
Remind me again... what's the point of this thread?

Personally I have the epic and am going to switch to the nexus s but only because I work for sprint and get new phones all the time, also I lovemy epic and the keyboard but if you are going to root or rom your phone the touchwiz imbeddedin the epic is a pain in the ass and bogs the phone down, I want the nexus just to root and maybe rom but just to have only stock on the phone and customize it the way I want. If you aren't ging to do those things, stay with the epic or switch to the evo if you want the bigger scree and better camera.

If you come to love the keyboard, stay with the Epic. Otherwise go for the Nexus S. The Evo just isn't worth buying anymore.
What's the rush in getting updates? The Epic does fine without gingerbread at the moment. If you're willing to consider rooting and installing roms, try installing the Syndicate or Midnight roms from this forum. It makes your phone millions of times better.
I'm going to say Evo Shift 4g is regards to to closes build quality and resemblance to your G2 from T-Mobile.
I wouldn't waste time on a Evo unless you want a bigger screen. The Nexus S is a good choice if you can deal without a keyboard.
I'm confused because you slammed the Epic on its build quality but are considering a Nexus S 4G which is another version of the Galaxy S line. Also I must've fell into a coma or something because I thought the point was to make a phone lite and thin these days not thin and heavy. My daughter has the G2 and I love the keyboard on it and the near stock Android and it goes no further but that's just my opinion. Within my family we have one G2, one My Touch 4G, two EVO Shift's, one Evo 4G & one Epic. My girls are one T-Mobile & everyone else on Sprint. My youngest are on T-Mobile for a reason their young minds are drawn to those T-Mobile commercials that are aimed at a younger customer base. I've had dealing with all of these phones that are so called better than Samsungs and the truth is they're not. I'm not sayings that Samsung is so much better its just that they're nowhere near as bad as people try to make them out to be. Truth is they provide chips and other components for most of these other manufacturers. My advice is do whatever it is you feel you need to do just don't choose a phone by hopping on a bandwagon.

I really dont understand why people dont like the build quality on the epic. What exactly is so bad?? Gorilla glass, a solid sliding mechanism, a rubberized back... an awesome keyboard with enough real estate. Gorilla glass, a solid sliding mechanism, a rubberized back... an awesome keyboard with enough real estate. Sliding door for the micro usb port, dedicated camera button... if your gonna get a different phone go for the nexus s. The evo and evo shift dont compare in speed and and the amoled is to die for. Dont be a little brat lol spoiled bastards.

You forgot to mention that you can remove the sd card while the phone is on. This beats the EVO and the Nexus for 2 completely different reasons.

I have tried pretty much everything out there and I think the Epic is the way to go if you want a keyboard. If you don't then its new cousin without a screen should be nice.
I am going to wait until the release a galaxy 2 with keyboard. I might even jump ship for that if I had to. I bet that Sprint will have something like that right around when all of our contracts hit a year. For those of you that have to wait 2 years, sorry. I have been with Sprint for 13 years.

Went to the local Sprint store, they had two Photon's on display to use. No offense, but that phone is garbage. Both units felt very laggy...the screen was washed out...Motoblur is disgusting...
My rooted Nexus-S 4G felt night and day smoother/faster, and the colors on my screen were a HUGE difference, as in way better quality and deep blacks and bright colors, the Photon looked bad. Vanilla stock Android is one hundred times better than Motoblur.
I am shocked for the Nexus-S being a bit dated tech wise, it is still my favorite phone of all the Sprint phones out today, I had the EVO 4G which was great last year, but is now slower and dated...bought the EVO-3D returned 3 weeks later, it was cool, just not a big fan of Sense, and the screen colors were just ok, picked up the Nexus-S 4G rooted it and installed Oxygen 2.2.1 ROM + Matr1x 6.0 kernel and this phone is a beast And I am sorry, but the Photon is the worst of the four phones I have tried, no offense.
So to recap, I had the EVO 4G at launch last summer, it was a kick ass device last year, now it is showing it's age. The EVO-3D is very nice, but Sense is not my cup of tea anymore, and no need for 3D on a phone, the Photon is terrible, and the Nexus-S still looks and feels fresh. Out of these four phones the Nexus looks like the newest and greatest of the four, which is crazy, because the spec's on the N-S are dated.
Curious if the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S2 will finally be the best Sprint Droid, and dethrone my Nexus ?
the epic touch will be a monster phone, and imo teh best on on sprint.. for about 2-3 months.. then the nexus prime will come out.. and no one will remember any of these phones

I hope they can get Oxygen ROM running on the new Sprint Galaxy S2, "Oxygen" is a pure stock Android ROM, removes all the crap, and just the pure stripped down vanilla goodness from Android only. It would maker the Galaxy S2 warp speed fast And with a super AMOLED+ screen with "voodoo" controls

Cyanogen has the GSII version so I'm sure they'll port it over. But I couldn't agree more with the op. I just got another one for my wife and a bunch of friends got it per my recommendation. They all love it.
And guess what, ill see you all in about a month on ICS typing in this thread

Not sure if Sprint is getting it right away ? Could be May 2012 like the Nexus-S release. Rumors make it sound like Verizon might be the first this time around possibly.
no, its been passed around verizon's hq as google is trying to get them onboard (the only major national carrier that doesnt have a nexus device) the cdma and wimax code is already there, there is no reason on why a cdma version cant come out the same day.
with sprint and the big g playing buddy buddy, its hard to imagine that a sudden turnaround on sprints part
The photon has a better screen. Fact. But I like my Nexus S so much more.
Does anybody know what the deal with the S in all of these phones is anyways?

This seems like one of those instances where the outside reviews, phonedog reviews and sprint.com reviews of the ns, that its not winning a popularity contest. It reminds me of what I heard when it came out mother's day. They said that mostly the devs and diehard android fans will like the nexus. Everybody else likes everything else. Even when I retire this phone for the prime, I'm not going to hand me down to the girlfriend. I've seen the way she sometimes treats my epic and know she wouldn't appreciate this phone.
