Just joined Sprint and got the Epic... - Epic 4G General

So I just switched from T-Mobile to Sprint and regretfully settled with the Samsung Epic. I'm not sure what it is but the build quality definitely feels cheap to me. I came from a HTC G2 and this is my first Samsung phone and also my first phone with a AMOLED screen. I'm within the 30 day exchange window for Sprint and I'm having trouble deciding between the HTC EVO and the Nexus S. On one hand I really like the Sense UI and I've always liked HTC's build quality/craftsmanship on phones and that 4.3" screen is oh so nice and on the other hand I like the screen quality on the AMOLED screens and wouldn't mind being on Gingerbread asap. Decisions decisions!

Remind me again... what's the point of this thread?

Sorry, I guess I'm just looking for some input from members of the community on both phones to help me make a decision.

Epic vs Evo? This been covered over 1000 times.

Personally I have the epic and am going to switch to the nexus s but only because I work for sprint and get new phones all the time, also I lovemy epic and the keyboard but if you are going to root or rom your phone the touchwiz imbeddedin the epic is a pain in the ass and bogs the phone down, I want the nexus just to root and maybe rom but just to have only stock on the phone and customize it the way I want. If you aren't ging to do those things, stay with the epic or switch to the evo if you want the bigger scree and better camera.

I had an Evo for 30 days before the Epic. Coming from someone who used both phones, stay with the epic. The sexy display and keyboard on epic more than make up for that .3" blurry, washed-out inches of extra screen u get on the evo. Only reason I see for buying an evo at this stage of the game is that fugly kickstand. LOL.

I agree 1000000% the only thing I liked was that kickstand

If you come to love the keyboard, stay with the Epic. Otherwise go for the Nexus S. The Evo just isn't worth buying anymore.
What's the rush in getting updates? The Epic does fine without gingerbread at the moment. If you're willing to consider rooting and installing roms, try installing the Syndicate or Midnight roms from this forum. It makes your phone millions of times better.

I'm going to say Evo Shift 4g is regards to to closes build quality and resemblance to your G2 from T-Mobile.
I wouldn't waste time on a Evo unless you want a bigger screen. The Nexus S is a good choice if you can deal without a keyboard.

I'm confused because you slammed the Epic on its build quality but are considering a Nexus S 4G which is another version of the Galaxy S line. Also I must've fell into a coma or something because I thought the point was to make a phone lite and thin these days not thin and heavy. My daughter has the G2 and I love the keyboard on it and the near stock Android and it goes no further but that's just my opinion. Within my family we have one G2, one My Touch 4G, two EVO Shift's, one Evo 4G & one Epic. My girls are one T-Mobile & everyone else on Sprint. My youngest are on T-Mobile for a reason their young minds are drawn to those T-Mobile commercials that are aimed at a younger customer base. I've had dealing with all of these phones that are so called better than Samsungs and the truth is they're not. I'm not sayings that Samsung is so much better its just that they're nowhere near as bad as people try to make them out to be. Truth is they provide chips and other components for most of these other manufacturers. My advice is do whatever it is you feel you need to do just don't choose a phone by hopping on a bandwagon.

Try out each phone, see which one suites your needs/wants...

I really dont understand why people dont like the build quality on the epic. What exactly is so bad?? Gorilla glass, a solid sliding mechanism, a rubberized back... an awesome keyboard with enough real estate. Sliding door for the micro usb port, dedicated camera button... if your gonna get a different phone go for the nexus s. The evo and evo shift dont compare in speed and and the amoled is to die for. Dont be a little brat lol spoiled bastards.

Getting the evo is a waste right now.. I've always had htc phones up until my epic and I'm more than impressed. At first it feel light and cheap.. but don't let the weight fool you. This phone is very we'll built. I've dropped mine a few time and it barely has any scratches. Plus once you look at the samoled screen vs anything else you will see what the hype is about
Tapatalkin' it from my Epic 3g

Two things I love about the epic I'm not looking forward to in the nexus are no video player even included on the s and the ability to record video in 720p. Use your camcorder and change the settings to 720p before you decide to leave the Epic

You forgot to mention that you can remove the sd card while the phone is on. This beats the EVO and the Nexus for 2 completely different reasons.

I have tried pretty much everything out there and I think the Epic is the way to go if you want a keyboard. If you don't then its new cousin without a screen should be nice.
I am going to wait until the release a galaxy 2 with keyboard. I might even jump ship for that if I had to. I bet that Sprint will have something like that right around when all of our contracts hit a year. For those of you that have to wait 2 years, sorry. I have been with Sprint for 13 years.

Keep Epic or Activate Evo?

Hey guys, I am a launch day Evo user. I really loved my phone but I lost it after some time. I went back to my Pre back up phone for a little while.
Last week Best Buy had the Epic for $125 with 2 year upgrade so I thought I'd try it. Well here I sit with the Epic and honestly I'm not impressed with the 4 rom options I have. I feel like the Evo had impeccable support and a great community. The Epic just seems like a joke.
Well now I have a brand new evo and a week old epic. Which should I keep? TIA

I didn't mention that I love the Epic screen and the HD video decoding.
I wouldn't base your decision on the 4 ROM options currently available for the Epic. I would guess the dev community is waiting for Froyo to get down to serious business. Having said that, the dev community for the Evo is going to give you a lot more options even in the long run. If that's your primary distinguishing factor, the Evo should be your choice, but I would expect the dev community to pick it up for the Epic after Froyo is released.
Samsungs support sucks plain and simple. Case in point, the Froyo debacle. We're right around the corner for Gingerbread and Samsungs top phone line still doesnt have a current OS. If its taken this long to get froyo imagine how long it'll take to get Gingerbread. Theyre always one step behind.
Yes the screen on that phone is ridiculous and Id love to have it but Id rather have a better OS and access to new apps. Let alone the dev community for the EVO is HUGE and one of the best Samsung dev's is running an EVO and building for it.
I have said this before and now I'm saying it again because my opinion hasn't changed. The EPIC has a fantastic looking display. But it feels cheap. Now someone once didn't know what cheap feels like. So when your walking around in Vegas and a smoking hot prostitute walks up and says she is $2,000 and you pick the lady in the alley for $50 bucks that is what cheap feels like. It also felt awkward to me for some reason. If I had a choice it would be the EVO.
Well, since you seem to be basing your decision on what the people here say... I say, go with the EVO.
But in reality, it's up to your own personal preference.
If customization is what your looking for, of course the evo. U could deal without hd decoding and if u want a pretty display just turn ur brightness all the way up lol. I love my Evo thats why u should continue to rock wit. Best HTC phone out.

The dev community for the Epic is sad compared to the EVO but yeah I'm sure they're waiting for froyo to get things going
I know other phone have support but I always buy a HTC phone usually has way more support from the likes of XDA
Was it just me? When I went to the Sprint store to compare the Evo to the Epic in person, I thought the Evo screen looked better. To me, the Epic had oversaturated colors, and I could see a dot-matrix like dithering effect on the SuperAMOLED screen.
It was most noticeable when browsing the web on the Epic; when I looked at the grey parts of the UI of the browser, I saw little dots and dithering everywhere.
Even though the scrolling and video was noticeably smoother on the Epic, the dithering of the screen bothered me so much that I bought the Evo.
I don't like the epics look just seems like a girl phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The sAMOLED screen used on the Epic is far from amazing. It has a blueish hue all over like it came straight out of planet pandora(Avatar). And text isn't anywhere as crisp as the evo.. Look closely and you can see thousands of small dots all over the screen.
Colors are nice but unnatural and over-saturated.
sAMOLED = Overrated marketing gimmick

Not so entirely accurate but we all have our own opinions on the subject the sAMOLED screen is nicer but it lacks a high enough pixel count to make it worth anything I work at sprint and I play with the epic all day and when I go home im not upset that I have an EVO its only 64000 colors compared to 16000000 but im not butthurt when I have hdmi out bad ass roms and as much support as I could ever need

Evo all the way plus epic is still on 2.1 which is a joke. If it takes this long for the Epic to get 2.2 will it ever get 2.3 some good old gingerbread. I would get the epic for my girlfriend. Keep the Evo.

What do you expect. They make toaster ovens, refrigerators, washing machines..... and phones. I'd say, from a support standpoint, they're probably stretched a little thin.
The galaxy s series of phones are going to receive the update directly to gingerbread most likely bypassing froyo where the EVO will not receive a second major update to gingerbread it happens only once in the lifetime of an android phone having said that; the EVO is better. STILL.

I would definately agree with everyone except one thing. The new Nexus S is confirmed to be a Samsung device. Once this happens there is going to be a flurry of developers working on the Samsung... So as far as community support and customization I think the Samsung could be there shortly with this new Nexus...

Evo3d or galaxy s2

I like both phone, both has crazy specs, I have the evo now and love it. What I love about the evo is that there is so many roms to choose from. My main concern is which phone is easier to develop for and do you think Samsung development community would be as big as HTC development community. Not to mention that I love the cm roms and there roms is still in experimental stage for Samsung. I really answering my own question for the evo3d but that screen on the galaxy s2 is calling me.

I sold my EVO and bought an Epic back in December... big mistake for someone that likes to dev and tweak his phone. The Epic hardware is awesome, but the dev support is very lacking. Yeah, I could overclock my Epic and score 2400+ on Quadrant and it took great HD Video compared to the EVO. The screen was also beautiful. I traded the Epic for an EVO because I missed being able to dev. If you're the type of person that always wants to be on the cutting edge with the newest version of Android, then stay with what the DEVs are using (probably EVO3D). If you're someone that runs the same ROM for months at a time (i.e. not a flashaholic) then the Samsung S II may be best for you. It depends on what you're looking for and what you're looking to do with your phone.

Yup Evo 3D, even tho it might have lock bootloader like the thunderbolt, it will have more support from developers, and good ones too, virus is coming alone and myns wants too, I believe mik is coming and of course others

I wonder how long it will take them to crack the bootloader if it is indeed locked. I hope not too long. But its what ever. After running Virus' Kindom Port, ill be fine with stock un-rooted for a lil while
My only concern is developing for the EVO 3D as they have some new files that are going to be or may be difficult to work on. Only time will tell. I'm going to the EVO 3D because I love Sense and I can tell you right now the galaxy wont have that.
My favorite roms are myns for sense and cm7 for latest android roms. So I guess ill stay with HTC

I checked out both phones at Google IO. The galaxy S2 was so thin and the screen was amazing. Both phones were super snappy.
The only turnoffs for me on the galaxy s2 was the plasticky cover and the weight. Anyone who's owned a Samsung phone knows what i'm talking about with the plasticky feeling phones. But the weight of the S2 blew me away. I can't remember a lighter smartphone. It felt like a toy. It was basically "too light." I'm sure for many, that phrase doesn't even make sense, but for me, I like phones that feel solid and have some substance to them. For some, when they throw this phone in their pocket, they won't even know its there.
I have to hand it to Samsung though. The S2 is an impressive engineering accomplishment. Its the highest performance phone I've seen announced, and its so damn thin and light.
I'm personally a fan of sense, or at least having the option of sense, and I doubt that would ever fully translate to a Samsung product no matter what developers are working on it.
I really love the slab form of the GSII, if they release a HTC slab phone (like the Sensation) on Sprint, that would really be the phone I'd want. Evo 2?
HTC has better radios and gps, Samsung sucks!
the s2 does seem intriguing...also i hate that instead of hdmi out, the use usb and then give you a converter cable w/ an additional power source on it. plus, for some unknown reason, it seems we could be waiting a while before it actually hits the market in the states for some reason eventhough it is already in europe (gsm version). also, i hopped on to the evo 3d thread a while ago and the dev's were introducing themselves...there were LOADS of great dev's coming on board. With the specs and dev's on board, the 3d will have some spectacular features!
I am intrigued by the GS2 and the new version of Touchwiz... I HATE HATE HATE touchwiz, but the new version looks ok so far.
One thing that will keep me from considering the GS2 is if it has a physical keyboard. I don't know why Sprint has to be the one that gets that...
I'm going with the EVO 3D. The specs look awesome.

I agree with you on that one. I think its more about being sure you get the right phone to have for the next 22 months. It's like getting married, you don't wanna make the wrong choice cause its gonna be a while. My biggest concern is data reception. My friend got a nexus s and couldn't connect to 4g when I had 2 bars of 4g standing right next to him. Also, all of the samoled screens I've seen have a color tint to them so I don't know if samoled+ will be any different.
I'm wondering about the tinted screen myself. I hadn't heard about the 4g issue. I always research my future phones but sometimes you just don't know about it till you get it.

Well I've had one samsung phone, and it was beast, it was the 'smart phone' of its day before smart phones as we know rule the playground. Never had a bad experience, and this one has the hardware to match the software; as I recall [could be wrong] samsung wasn't going to lock the bootloader so it should be rooted, potentialy quickly, and as that phone has the hardware, I believe it'll have more support than the notorious Epic. Also have a samsung 32" LED TV, amazing quality, and I think this phone is worth picking up, and if you don't like it, return it within the 30 days.

As much as I have always loved htc, the s2 just seems to be a better phone. In the side by side videos I've seen it just seems smoother than the 3d. It definitely has the hardware, and from what I've heard the new touchwiz is supposed to be pretty good. I'm waiting go see if the whole subpixel thing actually improves the quality up to qhd like they claim. I'm also curious if sprint is going to add a hardware keyboard like they did with the galaxy s/epic. A no gimmick beast of a phone is definitely something I can deal with until the next upgrade comes up. Worst case scenario, if I go past the 30 days and decide I want the 3d, I'll just order a 3d when the wife isn't lookin and tell her I bought it cheap off a coworker.

It's all about how you close the deal. My wife has a crap hero (no offense to hero owners, hers just sucks). So I told her I would go through asurion for a new evo since mine has some water damage, then I would let her have it after I upgrade to the 3d or galaxy s2. That way she could have a brand new evo until her upgrade comes in November. Not only is she bugging me to upgrade, but she thinks I'm a genius. Marriage, at times, is all about negotiation. As far as the hardware keyboard, I miss my touch pro 2 keyboard. I don't mind the thickness of the phone, and it made texting a bit easier sometimes. Also, remapping keys for shortcuts was a bonus too.

ok so here the deal. i might get a evo, but im not sure if it will be better in anyway then my epic. now i want to get a evo 3d but dont have the cash. so my question is, should i get a evo or just stick with my epic? they both are about the same spec wise but that doesnt mean one isnt faster than the other. any ideas? now i would be keeping my epic incase i dont like the evo but i dont want to get it and wast my money.
thanks =)

Yeah, I'd have to say you should save money and keep your Epic. You're able to make phone calls and do the already important things you need a phone for. So save up man.

What would be the advantage of getting the Evo if you already have the Epic and it's working?
Both phones are great, but I prefer the screen on the Epic, so I'd stick with it. Especially since it will save you money.
im just board of my phone, thats the only reason. and my keyboad is litteraly starting to fall apart. my space key is in 3 peices, superglued on. no lie
Evo all they way!!!
Obviously I am kidding. Keep the Epic and save the money.

I'd wait for a new device that is better than what you currently have. Otherwise you're making a lateral move.
If your eligible for upgrade, amazon has all sprint phones on sale for a penny until midnight tonite. (Nov 28th)
Including the evo 3d.

i probably am, but my dad (family plan) NEVER resigns contracts....haha like never. we had verizon for like 8years, with out ever resigning a contract....lol
ok well thanks guys for all your input, ill just keep looking for a evo 3d on craigslist haha =) maybe one will be in my price range soon.
There's an Evo 3D in the market place for $200 in really good shape. Its a steal for that cost but the seller is only offering it at that price for today.

If you had neither phone, the answer would likely be easy: get the Evo (even if it were simply the Evo 4G -- and not the 3D -- we were talking about it would be the better choice given the heavy handful of unnecessary complications the Epic 4G comes along with like GPS, accelerometer quirkiness and lagging CM support [not to mention lagging manufacturer support]).
Given that you actually already have an Epic 4G, the answer is a little tougher. It would be easy to say: "Try and stick it out for now. The Epic's a decent phone. Load up some lean, optimized ROM's and it may satisfy you for quite a time longer."
Sure that would be easy for me to say, but it also comes from the view of subsidized phone buyer that isn't used to giving $200 and not receiving a top-2 tier phone. But wait, what are we talking about?? "they both are about the same spec wise" is way FALSE...
The Evo 3D is a top-2 phone on the Sprint network (it should have twice the potential processing power of the Epic 4G, does have twice the RAM [which, btw, I would expect to be the solution for the majority of any slowdowns you may be experiencing with your Epic], and if we are to continue to distinguish their specs... it also has 35% more screen real-estate, resolution-wise [if that matters to ya]). If you can indeed buy it contract-less for the same price everyone else typically pays for a top-tier-er on-contract: just buy the darned thing.
Disclaimer: I have never used, nor completely read any reviews on, and do not explicitly 'follow' the happenings of the Evo 3D. The above recommendations are based on solid common sense, but should not be confused to include personal experience with the device.
I own both and I have to say that the epic is WAY faster even when the evo is on an AOSP rom. Also, the epic screen is way better...

Keep the epic. By the way, why would you want an Evo 3D? The hardware is almost dated by now, and it'll definitely be out-of-date in the coming months with quad-core. Also, if you've played with the Epic 4G touch, then it'll blow you away. It is way smoother than the Evo 3D, and the battery life is much better. The Evo 3D's battery isn't awful, but with medium usage, you'll barely survive a day.
If you're looking toward a new phone, wait a bit for quad-core. Dual core is gonna be left in the dust once quad-core comes out, and it's not that far away. Note that quad-core will greatly improve battery life, performance, and more since ICS has hardware acceleration optimized for it.
That being said, I wouldn't get a Galaxy Nexus either. Nexus phones are great, but that's only because they release the latest & greatest android version. To be honest, the galaxy nexus doesn't even stand a chance against the GS2, but it definitely kills an Evo 3D.
Hope this opened your choices up a bit, rather than to focus on an almost 6-month old phone
Keyboard is a double edged sword. I got the epic for my wife and I because she wanted a keyboard and this would be my first android phone so I wanted us to have the same. The keyboard itself is great as far as keyboards go but moving parts always break eventually. The evo would last much longer than the epic I am sure. If you get new phones regularly its no big deal but if you stick with one for a long time the candy bar format sans keyboard would be the most reliable.
Sent from my Epic - auto correct mistakes and all.
Go to swappa.com to see the cheapest unlocked but used phones. I hear it works well.

get insurance on that beast and get it fixed!
Besides, most people leave the Epic for the Nexus S 4g, not the EVO.
I'd wait for the LTE phones if you already have an Epic.

I've been using the Epic since February, bought it because of the beautiful screen. I don't think I've used the slide out keyboard more than 3 times. It was nice to know I had it if I needed it but I'm now convinced I can do without one.
Eepppiiiiccccc!!!!!!!!!!! The evo sucks
Battery is terribleee
And its slower than this
And it doesn't have a cool widget button set in the notifications
And doesn't have a beautiful clear screen like this phone lol
And nooooo keyboardd so touch can get annoying sometimes especially when sometimes u get a drop of water on the screen (which winter is coming so be expecting a lot of rain) and in the cold the touch won't respond to ur frozen fingers lol
That's just what I think and I can give u a lot more reasons if u want
Like rooting the epic and having cwm and roms is easier on epic and u won't have all the amazing devs that u will have over here lol
This is all just my opinions

Phone decision help.. (stay epic or use nexus 4g)

I just bought a nexus off ebay in random thought of upgrading my gf from her utterly annoying and pathetic samsung intercept. Now my problem is that I can't decide if its worth it for me to switch from my beloved epic to a nexus... Is the gpu better in the epic or nexus or same? I can live without the keyboard if theres something there besides ICS. Little help/opinion is appreciated especially from those who've had first hand usage.
Nexus

I was wondering the same thing, since Sprint has the Nexus for free until today. I don't play that many games, so top of the line isn't something I have to have.

Its Pretty much an epic with more roms (ics, official cm7, official miui, sense, blur, ics touchwiz, sonys ics ui, and many more). Same gpu. If you don't use your keyboard much, its probably best to pick nexus.

Thanks, I think I'm set now switching from my epic My gal would rather have a keyboard any way.
Waiiitt, the Nexus S 4G is free?! Do you need to be eligible for an upgrade?
Edit: Never mind, I see you do. Damn!
wouldn't it be better to stick with EPIC for now ( since Sprint should be releasing LTE phones in 2012 ) ?
you probably should stick it out, but if you want to switch its not a whole lot different.
My friend has the nexus s and from my playing with it there are a few negatives that i saw:
1. camera always makes the pictures upside down, every picture i get from them is upside down.
2. no gorilla glass
3. no keyboard obviously (not a major issue but for some on here it is)
but the pluses are obviously android updates in a timely fashion and more support for roms. and its a little sleeker and lighter.
just my thoughts

Also:
No Micro SD slot.
No native 4G toggle.
Camera app is inferior and is limited to 480p on video recording.
No physical camera shutter button.
With the release of Gingerbread, the devs here have really managed to have turned the epic into a best of class phone. It's pretty awesome now.
ICS should be awesome on the Nexus and official support should be great. Just keep in mind the limitations of both phones. It's a close race for me at this point in time.
Stay with the Epic check out the Cyanogenmod forum.
Stay with the Epic and use your upgrade for an LTE 4G phone. Flash the latest cyanogenmod ROM. This is much better than the Nexus Rom the only downside is no 4G.
Stay epic!!!!!!
Whatever gets you laid.
Do remember upgrades are now 2 years not 1 so in 6 mths you will be punching yourself when they release a quadcore lte nexus lmao

I would keep both the Nexus and the Epic. I had the same problem with my gf's phone she had a horrible LG Optimus S so I got her a used HTC Evo 4G and put CM7 on it and she loves it. I know this doesn't help you but I'm just saying this because my gf didn't want to really use her phine to its full potential she just wanted a good phone. Maybe your gf would just want a decent phone?

Phone came today and my gf looked at it was like candy LOL.... with that being said I ended up activating the phone for her. I don't have my upgrade available till sept/oct next year so I'm stuck waiting for a lte phone.
I've seen more than one of these threads, I guess I'll throw in my opinion:
Stick with the Epic. It is still a beast when it comes to power and development for it is still continuing with quite a few people still using it. And it has a physical keyboard
Wait for some LTE phones to come out also. I for one would love to see a good (Android) HTC phone on Sprint again.

Since i'm one of the few who actually read the op and knows that he ALREADY BOUGHT BOTH, i'm not going to answer "save your money" like some of the others here...
Nexus S by far feels more "solid", I owned the epic until the release date of the nexus s and having used both extensively I really think i'm justified in saying that the nexus s is just overall a better user experience.
The keyboard for me was useless because of the dropped keys and I like the thinner profile of the nexus, not to mention both of my epics felt broken because of the sloppy hinge. The overall build if the nexus is just great
The nexus s is better ... But sprint should be getting the galaxy nexus soon... Why would you buy the nexus s thats so old?

Lol you get a pat on the back. The Nexus does feel solid and easier to hold vs my Epic, also 2.3.7 is super smooth stock.
Responding to post above:
I bought the phone as a gift for my gal to get her off a crappy intercept. I wanted a pure google phone and didn't care for anything else besides the Epic touch (which was priced far out of my range).
