s-off and returning phone - Droid Incredible General

Do you think it will be ok?

Yes.......

Managers/Executives aren't smart enough to know to ask, and if technicians know to look, they are most likely community sympathizers anyway.

if I see this question again I'm gonna crack!

Honestly no one knows. There is considerable debate around the issue. It is unfortunate that S-ON has not been released largely because so many of these phones go bad on the hardware level (mostly Radio and Speaker). I certainly hope that unrEVOked decides to release S-On.
In the mean time, if you do return the phone to Verizon, can you please let us know if they refuse to honor the warranty? (It could take a month, as it would likely be a charge to your account). I am hoping that the debate will end once a few people report back (and I am holding off running S-OFF until they release S-ON for this very reason).
Thanks

First, I apologize, I've never even seen the q/a section...ever. Glad to know I can go there. The reason I've been posting them here is because all I've ever seen in the general section is a bunch of random questions. I was just following suit with the rest of the herd.
I never claimed to know anything about phones or even about forum etiquette. Contributing? I do what I can to help. If I can't, I don't.

cant post the link but the news is on android police
how could it be since the phone are ready to ship? wouldn't this delay the launch? the more acceptable thing to do would be to give the devs instructions or fix it via an OTA.

MAJOR Kudos to HTC!

Ahh a hole in the conspiracy theory. Is Lloyd hiding in the grassy knoll?
Seriously, you guys can be upset with HTC but, they could have gave some generic reason as to why they are locking their phones and eventually things would have died down. They wouldn't have really suffered from it.
Instead, they went in the other direction. I give them credit for that. All this does is keep me as a customer.
Setting a nice precedent here!

Yes, sir. Absolutely. This means devs will be able to cook roms, kernels and any other goodies we are enjoying on the current Evo......and more.
Evo will get a update second quarter soon confirmed from HTC also they said they will post a list of phones that will not be locked. Some still are.

Tmobile G2 is done but lets keep this going!

Honestly guys. Lets keep this support going regardless! Too many awesome developers giving us great things. donate. do anything possible for them. It's sad that T-Mobile decided after 7 months.. to just end a device that actually was a GREAT device. And honestly should be kept around for longer than that. (I'm sure a lot of us paid 250.00 for it with 2 year contract) I hope as a loving XDA Developer member and many others we can keep this going. I'm rather concerned what will happen in the future with this device on the development side of things. It's a good device and I know in the world of technology things to age very very fast. but maybe we can keep this around for longer than t mobile wants..
Much respect.. XDA guy dude of sorts.
This belongs in general.
Yes it does. But why not let the developers see this? I'd like to hear most of the developers opinions..
Because this is not what the developer forum is for and I really doubt devs are going to pack up and ship out because T-Mo isn't retailing the phone anymore.

I agree and hope this is the case. There are already a ton of us with the G2/DZ and it isn't a big deal if they take it off the shelves. All of you who have it now can just keep it going. I realize the concern with warranty replacement and such, but other than that I see no reason why this is such a big deal. We all know it's a fantastic device, who cares if T-mo doesn't realize that and discontinues it. Our DZ's still will most likely get the software updates you G2 owners won't get, and the DZ version can just be rooted and put on your G2's. There's no reason to freak out and buy a new phone if you have the G2.

you guys should check out the g1 forums. a few of the devs there still update ocasionally. I don't think development for this device will stop anytime soon (however the g1 did have lots of small developers as opposed to just a few big ones)

2.3 Root: Where we are.

First, this isn't a post about how to get root on 2.3. I know, at present, it is not possible. I know, I have tried pretty much every method imaginable
Anyway:
Where are we? I've heard rumors that S-off is coming from unreoked, alpharev x, team win will be coming "any day." Yeah, I'll believe it when I get it.
But, I think we are at the point where we are at HTC and Sprint's mercy. I mean, are we at the point where we are going to have to beg sprint and or HTC, to put S-OFF, or, somewhat more realistically, unlock the bootloader (or at least provide an RUU to downgrade?).
Anyway: Just discuss what you think about the plausibility of rooting the 2.3 release, and if we will ever see a free EVO. I am, sadly stuck on 2.3, as I didn't think about rooting, or know anything about it, until after I took the OTA .
Flame on! #johnnystorm

I don't think we're stuck at Spint's/HTC's mercy. We're just further down the priority list of the devs. That's fine, its the nature of technology. As STG posted, Alpharev and unrevoked are posting something tonight. That could be a universal GB crack (hope!) or it could be a rooted 3d/Sensation. Either way, OG Evo is moving up on the priority list. Its an old phone, but hardly forgotten.

HTC isn't helping much either, though they say that they are going to. The've announced that they are going to start sending out updates with the new unlocked boot-loaders in August, and the Evo 3D is third on the list so it'll be out later in the year. I haven't read anything about them sending out an unlocked boot-loader for the Evo 4G.
As was previously stated, not forgotten, but no doubt far down on the list of priorities.

If I recall HTC's statement correctly, they said the 3vo and the sensation would receive the updates first and then in September they would unlock phones that have recently been locked down...I believe the og evo is on that list.

If that "Something Revolutionary" is root for Evo Gingerbread, I will be voluntary slave to the devs for five years... Okay, maybe not, but Paypal donation, without question.
You guys are doing truly heroic work.
I still think it is obnoxious that Android phones (which ironically, is the "open" platform), have become more locked down. I am glad to see that HTC and other companies are starting to realize that this stuff is important. I think that it is at least a big step forward. I do believe HTC will follow through on their promise, at least for future phones. I don't think that they'd go back on their word. I'm just optimistic like that .
This "later today" thing is killing me. See; Now I am going to be on that page hitting F5 every couple minutes for the rest of the day .
Yea, yeah, I know: No ETAs.
Best of luck to all

All android devices need continued os updates and bug fix updates

http://www.facebook.com/motorola?sk=wall&filter=1 click the link people like it and comment on it.
I have seen first hand proof of this working. I had an evo 3d. Htc decided all futre devices would have locked bootliaders well that made alot of people angry. Someone posted a thread on xda suggesting we let htc know that is not gna fly. So it turnd out thousands of people got on there facebook wall and twitter. Guess what the next day htc released a statement saying that they wanted too keep there coustamers happy and that the bootloader would be unlocked. They were. Id like to be able too have a device and not have too get a new one juzt because moto or htc or sammy wants too put them out constantly get people too buy them and then ditch them and out out another. The atrix is 100 percent capable of runing ics and theres no excuae for it l not too recieve it just because moto wants people too buy new devices every couple months. I know many many people feel the same way well as i said we have the power too change that if people would stop bickering and take it seriously. And also if moto started supporting devices longer not just bug fixes but the new android flavors. Id definately make my next device a moto it would do nothing but benefit them

No one's going to care about your point if they can't even understand what it is. You could have a good, valid point, and no one knows because they can't figure out what it is.

Thanks Steve. I didn't know that was the case. I thought several users here had access to it.
I am so disgusted with SamSprint it is disgusting. The worst part yet is that I feel that I have no options. I like Samsung technology (specifically the large AMOLED screen in combination with the physical QWERTY), but with attitude that Samsung and Sprint have in releasing software updates (the attitude of I got your money already), it is REALLY discouraging. I wish we had other options because I would GTFO of this phone QUICK and never buy another Samsung phone again.
ALSO, all of this in combination with Samsung and Sprint's complete lack of communication on the matter. No status updates, confirmations, NOTHING. SOOOOOOOOOO tired of this business model, and nothing on the horizon that looks better.
The Galaxy S is an awesome phone no matter which variant you have. Yes we don't get the up dates as quick as we should, I put it on the carriers(refer to the I9000 section on samfirmware and you'll see what I mean). If they'd let some members of xda do their updates they'd be a lot stablier and out faster.

It is pretty clear from all of the posts that I have read, that getting GB from his phone is nothing short of a lost cause.
That said, we shouldn't need to do this kind of reverse engineering crap to get the software off his phone to get it to the people that want it.

I am sorry that you think it is ok for companies (Sprint/Samsung) to treat THEIR CUSTOMERS this way. You know, the same customers who pay the salaries of the employees of their respective companies???
I am also sorry that you don't find this ridiculous delay, and this non-communication as acceptable, and as something that doesn't warrant complaining.
Instead, you chose to complain about my post. Good use of your time. It is YOUR passive attitude which is what allows these exact delays to occur. GOOD JOB!

I simply don't understand how so many people think it is OK for a consumer to be treated this way by the company they are supporting. This is NOT OK. Instead of being passive about the entire situation, why not be more vocal???
Funny thing is, if you pacifists would actually read what I post, you would see that I am not even necessarily asking for GB tomorrow. I would be thrilled just to get some communication from these companies. Stop keeping the PAYING CUSTOMERS in the dark. Let us know what is going on.
If more people spoke up, maybe these companies would change their tune a little, but nooooooooooo, people are ok with not getting updates in a timely fashion, with no communication from the companies that will ultimately provide said update.
Unless GB is gonna make my phone physically do my job for me I don't see it as that big of a deal. The devs have made this phone kick ass but in essence its just a phone that's fun to mod. And no one is keeping anyone in the dark. We weren't guaranteed ANYTHING. We have been getting leaks (read: unofficial builds), and that's it. Nothing has been announced. We'll get it when we get it. Were we even TOLD we were getting Gingerbread by both Sprint and Samsung? I don't think so. We are all speculating release dates, 2.3.x builds, playbook leaks, etc.
