There is a problem with our battery life and we all know its true... I have even been given a new battery and HTC mains charger
I turn off any service im not using at the time (ie: wifi, BT, GPS, NETGPS,etc) not that I should have to do this, but lets story on track...
My battery will make about 1 day as I am A "power user" but if its not plugged in I wont have the juice for my alarm to wake me up, my wifes Sony Ericsson lasts 4-5 days per charge, but lets not compare apples and oranges, the whi-phone 3g my sister has sahe bought it about the same times as my g1, she hadn't ever heard of "deep cycling" 2-5 times when you get a new phone, she never lets it discharge fully and just tops off all the time, AFAIK she is treating a NIMH cell exactly the wrong way, BUT SHE GETS 1-3 DAYS depending on the type of use, and never turns off ANY of the 3g, gps, net gps, wifi, BT nada and Id say she uses hers alot because its her primary camera, GPS & A/V player
my question is WHY?
Im sure there must be somebody involved with the development of this phone/OS that reads thru here, since there is more exciting stuff coming from XDA than there is the market...

I wanted to add one very negative one but hit submit not preview, maybe just post and dont vote if none apply..
they better come off a new battery almost all other new phones will get 1-2 day + average use, Ive had phones that could go 3-4. but the state of the art G1 mindblowing innovative phone wont even work a whole day, so what if its bigger than the whi-phone, it has no keyboard.
I for one would like to hear some solid info on a replacement battery and back, for new and existing G1 users, early adopters got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on the HTC->headphone jack adapter I got the headphones with the htc angled adapter from fleabay, so many manufactures stick it to the early adopter, when we are the ones that get the word of mouth going, as people go "WOW that thing is cool!,what is it?! they know when we bought out phones and should be able to figure out when the head phone rev change was made, so send them to the first of the buyers....
IF the battery issue isnt fixed, alot of people will be very angry and the g1 will flop.
I think the bad press is starting to out weigh the good press the G1 and possibly android as a whole is at a crossroad. If the g1 tanks Android will be stained forever...thankfully enuff I dont think XDA-DEV would give up on this badboy, I love this thing, and I love it for what it can be

I dunno. With normal use, I get about 12 hours or more from my stock battery. That's about the same as other HTC phones I've had.
there is a battery issue and we are al aware of it.
i have managed to have it last through out the day
just set the brightness to the lowest possible, sleep time to 15 secs
turn off data and wifi and anything else that you are not using
its not how the phone was intended to be used, but it's what i ave to do for now
I find it fine for everyday use. Of course I haven't done a full test but maybe tomorrow I will.
I would like to use my G1 like I use my WinMo but no way I can with the battery.

I think you're exaggerating here a little bit. The battery life, while it got press at first, has faded from the limelight of android news for the general population. The G1 is already far from a flop and I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden mass return of all the handsets sold.
Let’s face it living on the cutting edge means you will get cut sometimes. Your high expectations will not always be met and manufacturers will frequently not care. The battery life is less than what many people expected, but we’ve learned to deal with it. At least we have options (power management, backup batteries, and expanded capacity batteries), but I’d not hold my breath on HTC making any major moves. How long has the issue been going with the TYTN II drivers anyway?

I have no idea what kind of use gets 1-3 days, but it certainly isn't 3G web browsing. Most iPhone 3G battery life tests clock 3G data use at about 3-5 hours. Based on my own usage of a friend's iPhone 3G, that seems to be about right. Coincidentally my G1 gets about 3-5 hours of 3G data use as well.
Frankly, from an engineer's point of view I have not seen any power drain tests conducted with enough rigor and variable control to be worthy of being called a truly scientific analysis. Even the best "battery life tests" out there aren't declaring what type of testing environment (los and distance to closest 3G tower), what background apps are installed, ambient temperature (which affects the battery discharge profile), etc. Without considering and removing these variables from the test, deviation could be as high as... well there's no fixing the percentage really. It's all just junk data.
I do notice after I installed Task Manager, to close out programs I am not using my battery life went up. There are a lot of un needed start up apps.

Yep my friend has iphone and we did test last weekend, both went 3 hours and change then died. If i dont use internet and set timeout and brightness down plus use task manager mine will go as long as my dash. I personally dont care about the battery life, i have a computer, home charger and car charger and i drive for a living so if it gets low no biggie. In my opinion i dont see android going anywhere and i love the g1. Just like wm its gonna take time to get off the ground. To say its at a crossroads is ridiculous.
I am using ADP1.1 and yea if I am browsing the net with 3G for 3-5 hours straight I start seeing the battery go down. But from 100% to 0% takes me longer than 5 hours. I know because I like to lay in bed and don't care to come check my messages LOL
I bought a G1 last week and so far I have been really dissapointed. After having an elf and seeing other htc phones I was expecting big things from the G1.
I am now a week into ownership and after 5 full charge - discharge cycles I am managing to get 24 hours out of the phone with next to no use what so ever. If i check my emails and do 30 mins browsing the phone is dead in 6 or less.
The hardware is simply put 'very poor' my screen is wobbly and the back is loose, all this after just a week.
As for android, it is fantastic everything I expected (except hotmail support) and there is no way it is going to flop. Its just a shame that google and htc didn't wait until they had the right phone for the job.

It all depends on what you have installed. for me the start up is. I beleve amazon does too, but I uninstalled that. But the first thing I do is go into task manager and kill everything. And only like two things auto start up. I really with HTC built in a x-button app for android. I loved the click x for close.

Under light usage I get about 36 hours from full charge to shutdown. That's GPS on, Bluetooth on, Autosync on, periodically doing e-mail and web browsing.
Under heavy usage (Which is basically I listened to MP3s for 2 hours) it goes at least 17 hours before I plug it back in. I haven't tested but I'd bet it could go 20 or more.
That's as good as (or better) than I was getting on the Wizard/MDA.
I dunno if anyone has stated it but the problem with the battery has to do with the phone recieving the cell signal. For some reason the phone runs in overload when searching for a cell signal...I noticed this one day when T-Mo suspended my service and my battery meter never moved all day, I think by night it was down to 85-90%...sure enough that night when I paid my bill and the phone started picking up signal again, the battery depleted at "normal" speed.

Why do i keep hearing that there is no hotmail support? Android (and G1) works with hotmail just fine! Just go to the Email program and set it up. WHY!! .. I am having connection errors sometimes though..
Battery is a big issue. Never had any luck with it.. EVER.. just unplugged it and after about 1+ hour it's down to 66%. Played a game (slide puzzle) watched 2 youtube vids of about 3 minutes each. And I had it fully drained and recharged a couple of times in the beginning. It didn't even took 10 minutes to drop from 100% to 89%.. But I was on wifi.. Maybe this is normal.
Software has a lot to do with this I think. Yesterday I had about 50-60% left. Did something, can't remember what, opening programs or music. And closed it. After 5 minutes I checked and battery was hot and had drained to orange level. I checked with task manager and only calendar/messaging/tunewiki/music was on. I closed all and restarted the phone, cuz it was still hot. Luckily it lasted a few hours till I got home, with very carefull use..
Got my Nexus One today. I was like a kid waiting to go to the candy store all day at school. I don't know if I have ever looked forward to going to work as much as I did today. Instant impression/feedback on "issues" to look out for:
"Dust Issue": I have no clicking corners or dust under the screen. Build quality seems top notch!
The boxing seems to be top notch as well. Nice design, good layout, I was able to put it all back together with ease(not common with cell phone boxes).
Battery: 42% charged out of the box, which is nice! I am going to give it a go at running it down before bed so I can leave it on the charger overnight to get a good full first charge and set the battery stats correctly.
Beyond that, not much to add to the conversation.
Going to add in some stuff as I go along:
On Screen Keyboard: In landscape I can type faster on this than my G1! I started practicing using the onscreen keyboard on my G1 after I ordered the N1, so the learning curve wasn't as steep as a new user... but none-the-less I can type very fast on this, to say the least. Can't wait to experience the better keyboards out there than the stock one.

The card manual it comes with says to charge it first.
I think if you run it down first without a full charge first, you'll degrade the battery from the get-go.

So it does... eh, I am going to stick to my tried and true method (Also the method the HTC tech training told us to tell customers to use with every single HTC made phone, and the same thing the BB guys said). I already did it this way with 1 N1, and the battery lasted me 24 hours, my manager almost 48, and the tester after her almost 48 hours as well.

Yup, and I have a theory on the dust issue... I think it is because they get too cold in shipping, so the contraction of the screen and seal causes it to come loose... and considering the first couple weeks this phone was launched, we were having a really bad cold spell in the US, it was a bit more widespread than usual.
And yes, Li-Ion, so all I need to worry about it making sure the micro-chip has the proper low and high battery level set.
I could see this cold thing being true, even down here in Florida where I live it is still cold - even in the Winter it doesn't quite get as cold as it recently has. If this theory is correct, then when it starts to get warmer the issue will soon not be a problem.

I so agree!! I hate this cold weather so much! I'm definitely not used to it.. the news where I live said it was going to "snow", I've never seen snow in my life, and yet this still wasn't the year >.>

I am not 100% sure... I would assume if you don't turn the phone on at all, and do as it says, it would turn out just fine and get the 100% level set right, which is the most important one to have properly set. As well, I think it has to do with a small amount of "idiot" proofing the process for people, in that if they do it that way it is fewer steps, and they won't randomly think their battery sucks because they only got 8 hours off it out of the box, or they mess up and put it on the charger right after turning it on and messing up the settings of the micro chip that reads the levels.
I have an "expert" BB training tomorrow, and then in 2 weeks we have our "expert" HTC training. I will ask both tomorrow and at the HTC one why they say this... BB says the same thing in their manual, even though at the tech trainings they tell us otherwise.

Other than the speculation that pjc already made, another reason is that they don't want people to fail to notice that the battery came partially charged and they have a negative impression of the phone when they get the low battery warning so soon during their first experience.
Also, today's phones might come with around 50% charge level, but next month phones might ship with 10% charge or who knows. So, telling them to charge before use avoids any unnecessary brushes with problems arising from doing the initial setup with a low battery. This will be especially true when people starting getting phones after the first OTA is out. If an OTA triggers right after unboxing with less than 20% battery that could be bad.
And, an uncalibrated battery may say 40% out of the box, but in reality it might be at 70% or 20% or who knows - until it is calibrated.
And finally, while the limit that the phone most likely needs calibration on is the lower limit, the consequences of not calibrating the lower limit are simply that you get more warnings sooner than you needed to. It won't actually affect how long the phone can stay on since that is determined by the battery reaching an actual hardware limit that is pretty fixed and measurable (only the estimation of that limit is off, but the phone has a pretty good idea of when it actually reaches that limit). On the other hand, while calibrating the upper limit is probably going to happen anyway just by using the phone and recharging it overnight as many people tend to do, the upper limit is the one that can affect the entire length of time the phone can stay on because if you don't charge it to "true full" then you really do have less energy in the battery.
So, all in all, "charge your phone before use" is probably the best bang for the buck in terms of characters-per-useful-info that they can put on a "read this first" card.
But, for best battery life - read the guidelines posted here and on other forums and sites on how to properly calibrate your battery and follow them. Typically you want to first discharge until the phone forces itself to turn off - then recharge until it says it is full and then keep charging a few hours past that for good measure, then you are golden for a long time...
Hey guys! I'm a new user on this forum and I also a completely new android user, I have just gotten the HTC Desire HD. And I'm really really enjoying the OS. The way you can customize the OS is amazing! And Therefore I feel like I have been missing out for a while.
However there is one single problem about the HTC Desire HD and sadly it's a pretty big problem. (You guessed it,) the battery life. I'm not gonna lie, if i cut some features i can easily get through a whole day. But whats the point of buying a phone with lot's of features if you can't use them, and whats the point of having a 4.3" screen if you can't have the brightness level at 50+.
To the point!
HTC have already made updated batteries that have a much higher capacity than the original batteries, these are for some of their other products.
(just look at the higher capacity HD2 batteries by HTC, they have a higher capacity than the original HD2 batteries.)
That's why i suggest that we all contact HTC and let them know that we are both aware and annoyed by the horrible battery. And then request a better and improved battery for the Desire HD.
If you look at their updates, they have a pretty good history of listening to their customers.
And if their customer service department get about 300 requests in one single day I am absolutely sure that we will see a result in a month or maybe even faster.
I live in Denmark myself and I've seen a similar thread in
a Danish forum and in two days time we have had 183 people send mails to the Scandinavian HTC customer service.
Now there is only about 2000 active users on that forum so that's pretty good for two days. And with such a huge success in a Danish forum, I'm sure a big forum like this would do even better!
So if you have the time to write a little email to the HTC customer service telling them about the poor battery life and then make a request for a better battery, I (and probably every DHD user) would appreciate it.
And even if you are one of those lucky users that can go for days without charging while having standard settings,helping us wouldn't hurt.

Well....although I do get your point, I am not sure that I, and probably other people as well, agree entirely on the 'horrible' battery life.
Yes, at first, it does look to have poor capacity when you get your DHD out of the box.
But remember, a lot of people, if not allm are using their new toy a lot the first couple of days.
If you browse this forum and the DHD topics you'll see that people report a lot better battery life after a couple of charges.
In addition to this, when you get into rooting and flashing, you'll see that users with custom roms, custom kernels and special profiles setup in Setcpu (like less Mhz usage when the screen is off) actually even get better battery life out if their DHD....
In essence, from what I have read, most people are able to use their DHD for one day without charging, which in my opinion, is quite acceptable, considering the size of the screen, the speed of the device and the possibilities and syncing going on....
If I sometimes read other cells'threads, it appears to me that the battery life on the DHD is not that far off, or even is better, than other top devices....
Having said that.....the effort you take I understand for sure, I just am not sure that HTC will do anything about it (as I think what we get is what we should expect)...
Where is the solution in that? Infact there is no solution its how it is

DHD battery life sucks.
There is no point defending it. Its a bloody mobile phone, it supposed to be able to work out of box, not a science project that u have to spend days tweaking it in order to last a day without the bloody adapter!
u can tell i m really crossed with DHD battery life...

If you mean 'it's supposed to have the best possible life the first time I fully charge it on day one' then, no it's not. You are wrong.
I just don't get it this was my first proper Android phone after coming from a HD2 and an iPhone 4 and the battery life is on par with both out of the box however simply reducing the time some apps sync I mean can you really not wait the 2 sec ish Twitter etc take to update? Really does improve battery life I have my screen set to 30% brightness which is more than enough if not you need specsavers not a new battery.
At a push I can get 2 days out of my DHD and I would say I'm a average to heavy user about 30 min calls 50 odd text and a couple of hours playing games surfing the net
Gadget show last night drained an iPhone 4 from full charge to flat in 2 hours using the layer app
I don't use setcpu etc I've just used some common sense.

well, i charged mine overnight, leave home at 7, phone dead most days by 5pm. u can defend the battery life as much as you want, and i m glad u like yours. less than 12hr of standard use makes any smartphone useless in my view.

I use iphone4 along side my DHD, almost identical setup in terms of sync and updates. when my DHD battery flat out in the afternoon, iphone4 has typically over 80% left.
I dont think it takes a rocket scientist to see DHD's battery is an issue.

Unplug mine from charging about midnight, get home from work between 18.30 and 20.30 and most nights I have approx 30-40% battery left, LiOn batteries need multiple charge / discharge cycles to get the best out of them so no phone is gonna be at it's best outta the box.
There seems to be massive difference in peoples experience with there DHD mine defo lasts as long as the iPhone 4 I had how yours can last less than 20% there must be something wrong

mine actually died last night (the first night i had it) i was a little surprised but i checked the battery usage and com.zxing..... used like 70%
lol it seems the barcode scanner didn't close and kept the camera on all night
I am a heavy user Facebook sync every hour a hundred odd texts a day few hours of internet browsing and I can get more than 12 hours mainly like 15 hours unplug at 7.30am and charge it 12.30am

it seems that some people have a very good battery life even with heavy use,and some don't. I am new to android having come from windows mobile. In winmo devices,the radio version on the device can make a difference to the battery life on similiar devices.maybe this is the same case on DHD because I noticed there are several version of stock roms with different built of radio image.

There isn't really a benchmark for "heavy user". I reckon its largely due to different interpretations. Throw the difference in batteries that are likely to exist due to the manufacturing process, and you'd get varying reported results.

why do people complaint so much about battery life of DHD and other smartphone. when you look at their capabilities, you wouldn't switch your laptop on an expect it to last all day. cause its a smartphone doesn't mean it can do everything for you!
if the battery really bad, then the is a fault i.e faulty battery,app which is eating up resources, radio constantly changing from 2g to 3g which i think one of the biggest drain on battery or a set up which just going to drain battery faster etc etc. These phone when "out of the box" are set up to show the phone off, so yes its going to have it all sing and dancing at you! with everything switched on why you taylor the setting to meet your needs. please don't come back and say "but yes why have i got a smartphone and then i have to switch off all these features" you don't but don't expect it to last all day.
sorry about the rant but i think some people just have unrealistic expectations how long a smartphone can last. people who complain that the phone cant last 24hrs, why would you want it to last that long?. you telling me you don't sleep in that period of time if you want a phone to last 2 days get a nokia 8950! an if your a person who uses it as a business phone, come on what do you expect? your a heavy user. use some sense, have it so you can charge on the go or a get a nokia 8950 as your business phone, an use your smartphone as your own phone.

sorry about the rant but i think some people just have unrealistic expectations how long a smartphone can last. people who complain that the phone cant last 24hrs, why would you want it to last that long?. you telling me you don't sleep in that period of time if you want a phone to last 2 days get a nokia 8950! an if your a person who uses it as a business phone, come on what do you expect? your a heavy user. use some sense, have it so you can charge on the go or a get a nokia 8950 as your business phone, an use your smartphone as your own phone.

True, but i honestly cant see why it would hurt to encourage HTC to make a new battery with higher capacity as a part of their accessory lineup for the Desire HD.
sorry yeah i do agree with you, that HTC sould bring out a higher capactiy battery and don't understand why HTC have not used a higher capactiy battery in first place. ive also have a X10(1500mAh) and BB storm2(1400mAh) both have higher capactiy, and X10 is the worst for battery life out of the 3 phones and DHD beats both these phone on battery life.
HTC have the reasons why they used that size battery for the DHD and if they do bring out a higher capactiy at least you can believe the claims of it being a 1800mAh, were these 3rd party batteries claim 1800mAh but really you only getting 1400mAh.
i was not aiming this rant at you, an im sorry, its to people that complain about battery life of todays smartphone and there expections of them.

Mine is using about 4 an hour. But I figure that's cos I rarely properly exit apps.

I've seen lots of advice in several different ways about charging new tech when you get it.
So I thought I'd try a poll to see what the general consensus is.
1) Charge until light is green before turning it on the first time?
2) Turn on without precharge, but then run completely flat before charging
3) It's a Li-ion battery and it makes no difference

Many people will tell you it doesnt matter but I know from experience that it does in fact make a difference. When I got my phone (mt4g) I starte using it right away without charging it, everything seemed fine I had an issue with the screen so I exchanged it and got a new one. This one I charged first for a few hours before even turning it on and it did make a difference. my battery seemed to be holding a charge for longer. When I got another battery I read they recommend charging it fully off for at least 8 hours then when you do power it on let it run down all the way. Do that for the first 5 charges and it will help your battery health in the long run.
Another example is my friend got two of the same phone one for him and one for his gf. He started using his as soon as he got out of the store, hers he charged for her because he didnt see her that night. He said the phones are pretty much set up identically, same software, same services running etc.. and he said her battery lasts noticeably longer than his

Thanks for the input. Ya, I have heard a lot of stories like yours.
And even if it doesn't always make a difference, it's only 8 hours, so it should be worth it just to make sure, but when you've been waiting since January for an android tablet and you finally get one in April, 8 hours is forever. ha ha

Oh, I suppose another related question is how much is fully charged? Apparently modern devices have a current regulator or something in them that stops it from charging past 95% or something? Not sure on specifics, but from what I've read. You can't charge it passed when the green light comes on anyway?
Anyone know more on this?

Many new batteries will charge to 90% or 95%, then display the light as "fully charged". They will continue to to charge to 100%, drain back down to 90%, and back and forth in order to not stick at full 100% (aka charging over night).
That being said I've heard a lot of talk about conditioning smartphone batteries etc. and for the most part I haven't seen a lot of evidence to prove that it is necessary. Lithium Ion batteries really don't need conditioning or anything as much as you'd think... that's really an old NiCad thing to do.
I did not charge mine when i first got it, the battery was already at 90% about and i simply used it for a day and a half and now i'm charging it for the first time. i regularly get new electronics devices and i never have better problems personally. battery tech has come up a ways in the last few years.
It's well known by now the Li-ion batteries do better with short, more frequent charges. It is not a good idea to run it down until dead. These batteries also do not have a "memory."
Placebo and old habits keep this myth around.

I got my Xoom wifi and plugged it in and turned it on. Couldn't wait any longer.
It's an awesome tablet and the battery lasts all day, with constant wifi and playing.

For those who have bad battery life first charge your phone fully while on then turn phone off...plug the phone back into charger while it's off it will be a red light charge until green sometimes it takes another 20 mins .When done turn phone on and plug charger in again it will drop to 99% when 100 plug out now u have a fully calibrated battery..I am on the new firmware btw

Actually it's not b.s I noticed that around 80% my phone would drop down quickly to 70% and 30% would drop 3% instead of 1 so I did this method knowing that my battery was not fully charged.since I have done this no more quick drops...instead of saying b.s why not try it first then come to a conclusion smh

Instead of clowing u guys should try it..listen phone says fully charged for some but in reality it is not it will rapidly drop for example 90% but drops to 79% rapidly or drops 3% for no reason while screen is on is due to battery not fully calibrated/charged ..This happens from flashing roms sometimes this happens if you have battery issues try this method ..

I used this method a couple of years ago on my DHD. It made a huge difference! i forgot all about this. I'll do it again later.

Yeah, I do this on my galaxy note and sometinmes on my new one.
When 100,% through normal charging turn phone off and begin charge again. It will charge just that bit further.
One thing the note does better is thaat when off and charging you get a battery indicator on screen, not so with the one.

Man that's total bull...... only 2 circles required
To be real for a minute if I may..... if you monitor the current draw by the phone when charging you will see that when the green led lights the phone is still pulling 60-70mA from the charger so it's still charging and can take a while longer for that draw to fall to 0mA. At this point it's fully charged.
Charging it as the OP suggests does actually allow this extra top up.
I actually think this does help with proper calibration a bit. Not sure why people are acting like children here.

In this case we seem to be talking about "battery life per charge cycle" and people should just be aware seeking improvement in this area usually comes at the expense of a different kind of battery life, ie "battery life per phone".
I personally am one of those who is a little irritated by the non-replaceable battery on the One because I intend to keep the phone for many years. This applies to almost nobody else I realize, but for me this thread is a helpful summary of the exact steps I need to *avoid* if I want to get the longest lifetime (measured in years, not minutes) out of the battery.

I only needed to do it once...for regular charging I recommend charging while off then plug it out turn on and charge will drop to 99% when plugged in charge until light is green..or you can charge normal after this point your battery stats should be good

actually i'm totally cool with doing this procedure every once in a while as a way to just what it says, get a few extra minutes of battery life. hell, if very precise runtime estimates are important to you and this helps calibrate that, great. i'm all for that too. i actually *have* tried something like this and my phone didnt die and i'm sure i got a little extra run time that day.
i just wouldn't do it *every* day.
one of the findings in another thread around here (something about battery "health") was the battery ages quicker at higher voltages such as those used towards the end of the charging cycle. if you are willing to constrain yourself to charging the phone to *less* than 80% capacity (ie the opposite of what this thread is about) you will double the useful life of the actual LiOn (or LiPolymer or whatever) material in the phone.
that is all. not trying to discourage anyone from *ever* doing this procedure, just explaining why i actually strive to do the opposite most of the time.

Known fact... it is impractical to FULLY charge up a battery while is is in use (hence, being drained). Plain and simple physics at work here and I can vouch for this based on the many years I worked in the Navy charging, repairing, replacing, and rebuilding naval vessel batteries. Granted these are not huge deep cycle batteries but the charging principles are the same.
As as matter of fact, just did the method the OP was kind enough to suggest to us and it worked like a charm. Noticed a higher mv reading on my battery! Not much but I will take it. Who would have figured on that...

As fun as it is to mock, this most likely does work. HTC seem to be pretty bad at making battery algorithms, never found myself having to do this on the galaxy nexus or nexus 4. But my battery drops to 85 darn fast now and I'm pretty sure this will help. I remember this was helpful on the desire and desire HD too.
