I am running into a problem with my phone and Froyo. I've tried the CM 6 RC1 and Eugenes latest Froyo rom. Both have only had an option to force my phone to use 2G only. I need the option that is in Eclair to force 3G (WCDMA). My phone likes to drop down to edge, even when it has a full 3G signal, randomly and it's really annoying. Forcing my phone to only use 3G is nice when I want to tether. Any thoughts on how to force 3G in Froyo?
open up your dial pad (like you're going to call someone)
press: *#*#4636#*#*
once you've done that, you will open up the menu, click phone information, from there you can chose the one you want.
After I press: *#*#4636#*#*, will I be able to do that again to go back to both?

yes you will
Download the "Network" app from the market, free of course. It basically bypasses you typin in the the Star Code and then clicking Phone Information > just takes you right to the menu. I too, miss the ease of swapping 2g/3g of Espresso, but the overclock kernel and this app makes it a lot easier. I live literally right on the verge of 3G spectrum due to my evil power lines, grrr

Yes, WCDMA refers to HSPA+/3G and GSM is 2G/1G so just keep that in mind when choosing your network type.

3G has become the clearest battery drain outside of screen usage, so I'm desperately looking for an app to shut it off when I travel for my Droid. I know that for some reason this could not be developed for Verizon like other networks because of the CDMA network, but I would imagine that a solution could be developed for rooted users since getting a Wifi signal essentially turns off 3G while still allowing for texts and calls? Could the phone be tricked into thinking it has connected to a Wifi signal? I'd pay for an app like this and I think others would too....
Go to the dialer and enter: *#*#INFO#*#*
Then go to Phone Information. Then scroll down to where it says "Set preferred network type:" and change it from CDMA auto (PRL) to CDMA only.
try juice defender in the market. it basically turnes off 3G while the phone is locked saving a ton of battery life! when you unlock the phone it turnes 3G back on! only problem is it takes a little while sometime for 3G to kick back on... but you could enable the juice defender when you want and disable it when you dont need the extra batttery life! give it a try! its free so if ya dont like it you can just get rid of it!
You can also use Quick Settings which among the other settings you can quickly change allows you to disable the use of 3G. It works great on my Milestone.
Or you could use APNDroid (on the market too). It has a widget to manually switch on/off the 3G net, but still allowing to use the phone/text.

Your milestone is GSM. Quick settings does not work for CDMA phones.
To the OP, use the widget called Easy Switch. It does 3G and GPS (among other things) with the click of the button. It doesn't take you to an options menu, it just works.
+1 on APNDroid. Simple and just works.
Another option for droid is cyanogen6. I know rc2 has 3g on/off built into droids power control widget.

use cynaogen...u can turn off 3g in there
I live on the borderline Edge and G3/H signal towers. When it switches to Edge, the G2 is EXTREMELY slow on the data.
Is there anyway to force the G2 to maintain the G3/H signal and cut out the edge? I live in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and seems that its always on edge instead of the faster speeds. Please help!
Try going to settings> mobile networks
Then make sure that "use only 2g networks" is off
Then go to access points name and select "tmobile data" if that doesn't work go to a tmo store and complain

Dont need to reboot. Also note that if your not in a 3g/4g area it will give you no signal

GSM/Auto (PRL) seems to hold onto UMTS/HSPA longer than WCDMA (Preferred).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6591742&postcount=2
tried to force the setting but it will go back to the wcdma preferred setting afterwards...anyone see the same?
is the Gsm/AUTO only better?
Not sure. Sometimes it seems like if I back out instead of hitting home it defaults back.

According to "T-Mobile" they said there upgrading their towers for the HSPA+ network thats why calls and text messages are not going thru sometimes........Lol!!
I just pressed back after changing the setting on mine and it's sticking.
I set it to GSM Auto (PRL) and it does seem to make a big difference in battery life (3G coverage is kinda funny in my area).

You have the # and * transposed.
Try *#*#4636#*#*. You shouldn't have to try dialing, it should immediately jump into testing mode
hi i came from a mytouch slide and i was able to set the network to 2g or 3g or even both at the same time. is there a way to turn off 2g on the g2? or even turn off HSPA+ and only use 3g? i've been looking around and can't seem to find anything on this. i'm not rooted but if i need to be that will be fine.
Have you tried dialing#*#*4636*#*#?
Sent from my CyanogenMod powered G2.
Yes. The easiest way is to go to the phone dialer and type in:
*#*#4636#*#*
This will take you to a menu.
1) Choose "Phone Information"
2) Scroll down and there is a drop down menu.
Default is "WCDMA Preferred" --- Which is 3G/2G with 3G preferred.
You may choose WCDMA only for 3G only or Edge for 2G only.
I don't think you can turn off hspa+ but you can just go to settings ---- wireless--- mobile networks--- and just check 2g only for edge and leave it off for 3g/H+

... hspa+ ***IS*** 3g.... so you apparently want to choose between 3g and 3g? Can't happen.
it can be done but requires a reboot. You will need to add/change the setting "hsxpa=0" in the build.prop. this will remove the "4g" also you may need to change lines that referance the ril libraries to remove the reference to "rilswitch". But that might just be with cm6...

Is there a way I can make the Atrix use 2G only, to save battery? I can't seem to find the option in settings like it is for other phones.
Cm7 has this option

Alien too...
Sorry I didn't clarify - I am talking about stock.
Then you can enter *#*#4636#*#* on the dialer and choose 'phone options' . Then select GSM only(prl) . That should give you 2g only.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
well theres roms that enables it to switch to 2g and 3g. Any of them. But there is a thread that changes that and you can pick from either one.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I have tried the #*#* method, cm7 and alien. While all three will show the option to change them they won't stick. I'm using alien v4 and have 2g only checked and rebooted yet I still get 3G and H logos on my status bar as well as 3g speeds when sending mms, web browsing, ect. I believe this has more to do with AT&T than the Atrix itself as AT&T began phasing out their edge network a few months back.
I used the* #* method before I was even rooted, and it worked just fine. Edge is not really 2g, more 2.5g so AT&T phasing out their Edge network shouldn't really influence this.
Sure you set it to gsm only and not gsm auto?
The Defy has it as standard, and that's essentially the Atrix's little brother in my eyes.
This is a little off topic, but is related some how... but..
Its becoming apparent to me that among some users the automatic assumption that the solution is to either flash a custom rom to fix a simple thing like this or that the user is using a custom rom.
Some of us are stock users, even though we are on a forum orientated at development and customisation, so please do not assume?
From memory Widgetsoid allows you to add a 2g/3g widget to your screen to enable / disable 3g. Tasker & Locale should be able to do it as well depending on conditions (e.g. battery <30%)
Sometimes I drop to 3G in my home 4G area. Turning the phone off and back on usually does the trick but is there another way to keep the 4G connection?

I believe you can set the phone to only receive CDMA and LTE in the Mobile Networks option of the settings (in the more section)
You can also set it to receive only GSM, GSM and CDMA, or all available networks.

CDMA=3G, LTE=4G. Right? Since I am on the Verizon network, the only circumstances that I would connect to GSM is if I left the USA, right? I wonder if there's a way to isolate LTE connectivity and turn off 3G all together..

You on stock or a custom ROM?
That sounds like a radio problem tbh.
You can't use LTE only - in fact, LTE requires a CDMA or GSM base for stuff like phone calls so it always has to be connected to 3g or 1x.
There's a possibility that switching airplane mode or pulling your SIM out would force LTE to reconnect
Solution: Yes you can force lte
I'm not a engineer or a radio analyst but I do believe what the previous post says about LTE needing CDMA is completely wrong - it certainly doesn't need to have CDMA or any other radio band to effect LTE. That being said, LTE is BASED off of 3G CDMA. But again, I may be inaccurate, however I think the "proof is in the pudding"......HOW TO FORCE TO LTE (ONLY)
1. Open up your phones dial pad
2. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (An app with the title "Testing" should open automatically... but not 100% sure. If it doesn't open auto hit dial....
3. Select "Phone Information"
4. Scroll down the phone information page, you should see the first button that says "Turn off radio"..... We want to focus on the item right above that. By default it's set to "LTE/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
5. Click on that which should provide a drop down list, with specific radio bands.
6. In your case select "LTE Only"
7. Profit!
FYI: IN "LTE Only" mode you will not be able to make or receive calls - this is good for DATA only. You can manually reset back to default mode but regardless every time your phone reboots it will go back to default.
Well yeah that's true. Not really sure if vzw will let you connect though. But yeah no calls or text
