I live on the borderline Edge and G3/H signal towers. When it switches to Edge, the G2 is EXTREMELY slow on the data.
Is there anyway to force the G2 to maintain the G3/H signal and cut out the edge? I live in Rancho Cucamonga, CA and seems that its always on edge instead of the faster speeds. Please help!
Try going to settings> mobile networks
Then make sure that "use only 2g networks" is off
Then go to access points name and select "tmobile data" if that doesn't work go to a tmo store and complain

It's *#*#4636#*#*
GSM/Auto (PRL) seems to hold onto UMTS/HSPA longer than WCDMA (Preferred).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6591742&postcount=2
tried to force the setting but it will go back to the wcdma preferred setting afterwards...anyone see the same?
is the Gsm/AUTO only better?
Not sure. Sometimes it seems like if I back out instead of hitting home it defaults back.

According to "T-Mobile" they said there upgrading their towers for the HSPA+ network thats why calls and text messages are not going thru sometimes........Lol!!
I just pressed back after changing the setting on mine and it's sticking.
I set it to GSM Auto (PRL) and it does seem to make a big difference in battery life (3G coverage is kinda funny in my area).

You have the # and * transposed.
Try *#*#4636#*#*. You shouldn't have to try dialing, it should immediately jump into testing mode

What happens if no 3g is available? Does this apply to the uk as well?
at&t
two questions:
1. Will this enable 3g use on at&t's network?
2. Is it possible to revert?
1. No
2. Yes, just tap in the same code and switch it back.
You can switch back by using the same code.
If you do not have 3G while this is set to 3G only you will not have any data service, unless you switch it back.
It will not make 3G work on ATT (different frequency)
for those who weren't paying attention when they did this, the default setting is "WCDMA Preferred".
i dont understand why you wouldn't leave it as that????

Well, because if you are out of 3G coverage area, you don't have and data coverage any more, no web, no email, no syncs, no map. nothing.
Wow, Thank you for the trick, after I did the trick, I tested my 3G speed 4 times to make sure it, My 3G speed is increased greatly. Before this trick I only got about 480 kbit/s, now I tested 4 time I get average 780 kbit/s. That is cool!
Thank again.
Hello, I have no problem receiving an LTE signal on BCE (Canada) through the Phone Info Menu. I can select any of the preferred network types including LTE, LTE/GSM, CDMA, LTE/GSM/CDMA but it won't stay. Every day I have to go back into the menu and it reverts back to the first selection "WCDMA".
Does anyone know how to force this so it stays on LTE/GSM/CDMA. So it will stay on the LTE-enabled network unless there is a loss of signal and it reverts back to HSPA? It does this automatically when "LTE/GSM/CDMA is selected, but again reverts to CDMA within a day usually.
I did some searches here, but 99% of what comes up is just people asking how to enable LTE or if their network gets it?
Any ideas? Maybe some sort of macro thing.
Regards.
Add this line in build prob
telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1

Reboot
Now in settings/more/mobile networks u will have an option to choose and it will stick. U have to add the line every time u flash ROMs.
But I keep iron WC DMA/gsm for better battery speed is OK on h+
Thanks for the helpful reply man. I haven't edited a build.prop yet, so Ill have to check it out.
Alright thats all done now, works like a charm. Like that I have the option now either way. I typically stick to WCDMA/GSM when on the road or at work where LTE is spotty, but on days off for around town I would rather just be on LTE as I usually just looking up something quick when Im shopping or something.
Thanks again.

Nice
I keep it at LTE, it does have less bars but quality is same for me, speeds are amazing. Also 4G is only data, not voice, so when u have an active call it will change to 3G.(but that's not the phone it's the network)
don't forget to do it again if you flash new ROM, also Tethering WiFi won;t work, there is a fix but it's complected for me, so I just go to W/G if I need to share connection.
So, my Nexus 4 shipped today, and it'll be in my grubby little hands by tomorrow evening. I, unfortunately, can't activate it until March, as I have to wait for my Verizon contract to end, but I keep seeing this LTE stuff, with no real explanation. I do know that the Nexus 4 has an inactive LTE radio in it, but what's the use of activating it, if T-Mobile doesn't have LTE? Is this only for the AT&T users?

There are other threads dealing with who can access LTE in the USA. I am in Canada and on Bell.
I'm in Canada, using Fido. I activate the LTE on my Nexus 4. It works fine, but I'm not able to share internet with wifi hotspot.
I have Android 4.2.1 (latest OTA from Google).
There is a bug with this version or it's only because I activate LTE manually ?

i recently got a rom from revolt on my n4 and i switched cdma to lte gsm wcdma auto
i also went into build.prop and wrote down telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1. i went and to setting, more, mobile networks chose the correct setting. so now i got 4G. great i can make calls. GREAT. but i cannot receive calls...
need help with this. im really choked about this ROM
Even if I select "LTE/CDMA" in the Mobile network settings menu. The settings page keeps displaying "CDMA preferred".
Does this mean it didn't work? In quick settings, I see my mobile data connection as 3G Bell.
LTE only seems to work when using the *#*#4636*#*# trick in the Phone app.

Thanks, but LTE doesn't work in my country, its always stick on lte/gsm/wcdma but it doesnt detect my gsm so i have to manually set it on GSM only but wont stick here every time i restart my phone i have manually set it on GSM only otherwise it wont detect my network
Any advice ?
How can I make "WCDMA Only" the default selection?
Where I Iive there is no LTE and the coverage of the service is quite poor, so the phone keeps jumping between E and 3G/H. I have to manually go into the phone app and select "WCDMA Only" is there a build prop tweak to make the "WCDMA Only" the default option instead of "WCDMA Preferred"?
Thank you.

Aah Crap ! Well thanks man saved me from buying on guess i will have to stick with my rezound for now then
fixed it
For everyone still searching for a solution to this problem, this worked for me. Go to phone information and turn your radio off. Then switch to LTE/GSM/CDMA then power down, DO NOT TURN YOUR RADIO BACK ON. Now remove your Sim card, put it back in, reboot and you should be good to go. DO NOT HGO BACK INTO PHONE INFORMATION OR ELSE IT WILL NOT STAY
If it still isn't connecting try fiddling around with your APN settings.
So i finally got my nexus 4 and I'm on T-Mobile network and noticed that at work i notice my signal is constantly switching from H (HSDPA+) and E (edge). It's kind of annoying since edge data is very slow. Is this a common issue with the n4? When i get H signal, i have two bars so i don't think it is being boarder line signal. Please let me know, really hope i don't have to return this sweet phone!!!!
Are there any updated radios yet that i can try? I know with Vzw galaxy nexus radios helped a lot with 1x/3g/4g switching.

Any info on this? I know what the symbols stand for, however why can't this hold a strong HSPA signal for more than a minute without switching to edge even if the signal is 2 bar? Doesn't seem right

It happens to me as well but its not just my nexus 4. It happens to my iPhone and my brothers HTC one v. Its just that we have decent to bad signal at home. Signal gets spotty sometimes.
So if you're at home just use WiFi and leave data off.

Thanks for the reply, any info how how to change the apns and what the best ones would be? I have been reading many people say their n4 idles with 3g and then ramps up to hspa when it calls for data usage. Mine doesn't act like this and just randomly drops to edge
Mine stays on 3g and only switches to H+ when I use data (custom rom icons). I think its normal
There is an app that takes you into the menu where you can choose network types, this is what is used to turn on LTE. Go in and put it to WCDMA Only, that should make it stay only on H+ and not go to Edge.

I had a S3 before I bought the G2. I have a Verizon network extender at my house. I typically get 1-2 bars of 4G, and I had issues with call quality and dropped calls on the S3. With the G2 my 4G signal is about the same. I used an app call Phone Info on the S3 to force it into CDMA while I'm at home, which would give me full signal from the network extender. This app doesn't work with the G2. Any suggestions?

Be Sure to Click Thanks
Mobile Networks/System Select (which I think is what you mean) doesn't have an option for CDMA only. Only LTE/CDMA.
I tried 3 or 4 other apps tonight, and none are able to access Phone Info to modify these settings. I'm lost here...

Hi Everyone,
Just bought a S4. Excellent phone but it has one nasty downside.
My carrier isn't supporting LTE yet and when the phone switches back from 3G to 2G because there happens to be no 3G coverage it stays in 2G mode afterwards all day long. Even when I know there's perfect 3G coverage it stays on EDGE.
My former Galaxy Nexus always tried to go back to 3G whenever possible.
I can always set the network mode to WCDMA only but then when I have no 3G coverage my phone has no network connection at all.
Is there some kind of way to force the phone to prefer 3G over 2G. Because now it seems to like 2G which I do not like so much.
I only want 2G when there's no 3G coverage.
I've got an unrooted and unbranded i9505. Not yet ready to root to be honest.
Any advice or USSD code I can use to get into some setting menu? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! But this does exactly the same as changing the "network mode" manually in the settings menu it seems.
Will it go back to 2G when there is no 3G coverage? Probably not?
If you're on stock firmware your phone shld be able to detect 3G networks automatically and switch to the best available network.
Have you tried choosing WCDMA/GSM (autoconnect)?

I have set it to WCDMA/GSM (auto) but still it regularly keeps itself connect using edge. Then sometimes the phone switches back to 3G
I know someone at Samsung Belgium and he checked with the technical guys and he says that the chip of the phone prefers LTE (which isn't available yet at this moment with my operator) and has no priority to switch to 3G.
He said there's not much we can do about that other than wait for 4G or switch operators...
Yeah well...

This one is better since it really forces the radio to recieve only a particular frequency.
But be careful as it will not use any connections unless what was set.

The app seems to help indeed, although the phone sometimes stays on 2G. I guess I'll have to live with it until my provider activates LTE. Should still happen this year.

Not really, we switched provider and they already offered 4G. Then the phone always preferred 4G where available.
I broke my S4 and bought a Nexus 5 afterwards. No more problems now as i'm constantly on 4G, the rollout is going steadily.

Hi,
When it happens on my device I usually turn on airplane mode and then turn it off again. Also, make sure you didn't select "2G Network Preferred" (I don't know if it's still there... But my old X10 Mini Pro had it).
I know this trick of airplane mode may not be the most convenient way, but it does the work for me .

Thanks for the suggestion, but that doesn't work for me. The only way is by forcing 3G through the *#*#4363#*#* menu. Also, last time the device set itself in 2G only, which it had never done before, it usually kept the "GSM auto (PRL) setting, but it just wouldn't pick the 3G signal.

Hi,
Oh well... Then I don't know a simpler solution, I may try thinking about something later, but it seems a weird issue for me. Another trick would select manually the network, but it is quite tiring (takes lots of time for the device to discover the network) and I don't know if it would work too, after all turning on airplane mode disconnects everything, so when turning it off will reconnect to the most convenient network. You may want to try, but I am not sure.
