How to set treshold for automatic switching between WCDMA and GSM?

greeting from Czech republic, can u help me fix this problem pls?
When i use my Universal at home, there is pretty low level of UMTS/WCDMA signal and full level of standard GSM signal. By default Universal changes between those two sources automaticaly. But in my case, the quality of WCDMA signal is often varying just around critical level. So the result is that Universal changes band to GSM and back. And then again. And again. And... Due this, there is sometimes not possible to make data connection, because Uni is so much occupied by changing bands back and forth...
I would like to find a better solution, than select only GSM manually in phone settings. Especially because i have to unselect it manually every time when leaving home :-(
Is there any way to set treshold value (i expect increase it) for automatic switching between WCDMA and GSM?

Greetings,
Go to Settings, click on Phone in the personal settings, then select Band.
In the Select your network type, click the dropdown and select GSM.
Should do the trick

As i write, I would like to find a better solution, than select only GSM manually in phone settings. Especially because i have to unselect it manually every time when leaving home :-(

Not that I know of.
But you or maybe someone can write an Apps to do so. But maybe difficult.

Yeah I often had the same problem. Switched WCDMA off completely to get rid of it, but indeed it would be nice to be able to use it automatically if it was available at a usable strength.
But then in my case, the UMTS speed and GPRS speed does not differ much anyway. UMTS is capped at 64kbs in my subscription.

For me, UMTS is much faster than GPRS.
But only switch manually to UMTS when needed. Most time, to save battery, I am on GSM/GPRS mode.

It's enough for me. I've got a flat fee internet connection for 10 euro a month with T-Mobile. If I want more speed I'd have to pay 20 euro (192 Kbs), 40 euro (384Kbs) or even 70 euro (1.8Mbs). I was amazed I could get unlimited traffic for that amount. Before that I paid 5 euro a month for 1MB with Vodaphone. Not even enough to check my mail!

Disable UMTS

Does someone know how to disable UMTS for the Trinity?
I've searched on the forum but I couldn't find any good solutions

Settings -> Personal -> Phone -> Band -> Select your network type -> GSM.

I use this Bandwith app also. However, if you really want to turn off HSDPA and leave on 3G permanently you can use the app on this page called HTweakC http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Registry
I turn off HSDPA because it blocks incoming calls (my carrier's problem). I can receive calls normally with 3G.

Thank you for that Band Tool. I'm a little confused by something, though. Does it save battery life to disable UMTS? I don't need any 3G functionality at all currently, so does it make battery sense to disable UMTS?

I beleive that it will. UTMS drains the battery quicker as the phone searches for cells more frequently than it does on GSM

Thank you. Is there a way to make the Band Tool work every time you turn the phone on? If I turn my phone off and on, the tool resets and I'm back to 3G mode.

Thanks again for the reply. I installed TrinityHacks, but it's a little confusing with the whole band selection. I see auto, or GSM+UMTS selections. I don't see a GSM without UMTS. Did I miss something?

Bandswitch settings should persist through a soft reset- mine certainly do. Make sure you leave anough time for the registry changes to save before exiting the program, or doing a soft reset.
UMTS typically uses 3x the current that GSM uses as 3G is a much weaker signal. so the gain needs to be much higher. And in marginal reception areas, the constant hunting between bands further hits the battery

Well I find it all bit a confusing! Gah! I uninstalled that Band Utility, and installed the Trinity Hacks. Not sure what setting to use to make sure it's 2G. Am I correct in assuming that G at the top of the screen means 2G, and 3G = 3G?

Yes
G=GSM; 3G or U = UMTS; H= HSDPA, (but only shows during data exchange)

Ah ok thanks for that! I think something got messed up, because before it would say 3G at the top of the screen, and my network was identified as UMTS Vodafone. Then I installed that Band Utility and switched to GSM only. Then I uninstalled that Band utility while I was on GSM only. So now I'm stuck on GSM, even when switching UMTS on in the Trinity Hack program. I'm so confused now.

Have you tried Phone/Menu/Options/Band and setting the top box to Auto?

Yes, it's on Auto right now. I don't even see the *specific* GSM-only setting. Maybe Trinity Hacks doesn't have this feature?
*AH I got it*. I reinstalled Band Switch, put it back to Auto (so 3G worked again), and then uninstalled it. Trinity Hacks now works!

How to Disable 3G?

Does anyone know how to turn of 3G as its sucking my phone dry and it lasts for less than a day. i installed a cab file and now i no longer get the 3g connection in the manager. Is there another way to disable it as i can see it switching between the networks and 3g is on and off like crazy.

U should really considering searching before u ask something like that
going to phone>menu>options>band is the same as going to settings>phone>band.

i checked the options in connection manager and advanced but never saw anything which said 3G, is it a band setting i need to change instead, if so what is the band setting to not use 3G?

WCDMA = 3G. So just set network type to "GSM" instead of "Automatic".

Can I turn off HSPA to save battery in a low signal building? (Bell Mobility)

My phone is fighting to find reception all day, and it does a number on my battery. Is there a way i can force the phone to not go on hspa and just use 3g, or 2g or whatever? Dont need internet access at work, just calls. thanks

This phone is only capable of 3g not HSPA+ however, we can go up to the threshold of 7.2. You can only turn off the 3g and will only get edge from the comment above.

The OP's thread title says that he's in Canada and using Bell Mobility not T-Mobile.

And HSPA != HSPA+ (I believe.. would make sense since theres two difference names to it)

Im pretty sure i read his post correctly he only wants to use 2g and 3g.... however with most people confusing HSPA and HSPA+ i just guessed he was referring to HSPA+

bell mobility's network does not work on edge (2g). it is a 3g network only. the bell version of the phone shows the option to use 2g, but people using a bell sim can only use 3g.
i have the phone unlocked and on the rogers network and while my phone will switch to 2g when rf is very low, i cannot manually set it to lock to 2g with the stock rom. i have flashed to the jm6 rom and this one gives me the option to switch to 2g and lock it in, but i have issues trying to manually switch back to 3g when i do this.
if you are in an office with poor rf strength, try leaving wifi on so that your data connection will not have to work as hard to maintain a connection. thats what i do when i get home and i find it eats less battery.

Leaving Wi-Fi on without actually being connected to a Wi-Fi network actually drains your battery since it scans for nearby WiFi networks especially ones that are public and alerts you.

On the Vibrant, HSPA, HSDPA or whatever are still listed as 3G and not H. The OP said HSPA not HSPA+

if the op does want to totally disable the apn then apndroid will work but i wont use that kind of stuff as i seem to have all kinds of issues after installing apps like this. i am sure it works well for some, but not for me.

To answer the op's question maybe you can use Tasker to set up a task to turn off data at a specified time during the day, but its a paid app.

and i didnt say to leave wifi on without being connected to a network, i said if you are in an office all day to leave it on. i was implying that if someone is in an office all day they would be connected to a known wifi source. i do this every single day and it does not use more battery then leaving 3g on in a low rf area.
at the end of the day the op did ask for a way to turn off data completely so the apndroid app is one way to do this.

Yah unfortunately i have a T mobile branded Vibrant so its hard to tell what has been changed between ours and the one for Bell.

How to force LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) or any other Preferred Network Type.

Hello, I have no problem receiving an LTE signal on BCE (Canada) through the Phone Info Menu. I can select any of the preferred network types including LTE, LTE/GSM, CDMA, LTE/GSM/CDMA but it won't stay. Every day I have to go back into the menu and it reverts back to the first selection "WCDMA".
Does anyone know how to force this so it stays on LTE/GSM/CDMA. So it will stay on the LTE-enabled network unless there is a loss of signal and it reverts back to HSPA? It does this automatically when "LTE/GSM/CDMA is selected, but again reverts to CDMA within a day usually.
I did some searches here, but 99% of what comes up is just people asking how to enable LTE or if their network gets it?
Any ideas? Maybe some sort of macro thing.

Alright thats all done now, works like a charm. Like that I have the option now either way. I typically stick to WCDMA/GSM when on the road or at work where LTE is spotty, but on days off for around town I would rather just be on LTE as I usually just looking up something quick when Im shopping or something.

I keep it at LTE, it does have less bars but quality is same for me, speeds are amazing. Also 4G is only data, not voice, so when u have an active call it will change to 3G.(but that's not the phone it's the network)
don't forget to do it again if you flash new ROM, also Tethering WiFi won;t work, there is a fix but it's complected for me, so I just go to W/G if I need to share connection.

So, my Nexus 4 shipped today, and it'll be in my grubby little hands by tomorrow evening. I, unfortunately, can't activate it until March, as I have to wait for my Verizon contract to end, but I keep seeing this LTE stuff, with no real explanation. I do know that the Nexus 4 has an inactive LTE radio in it, but what's the use of activating it, if T-Mobile doesn't have LTE? Is this only for the AT&T users?

There are other threads dealing with who can access LTE in the USA. I am in Canada and on Bell.

I'm in Canada, using Fido. I activate the LTE on my Nexus 4. It works fine, but I'm not able to share internet with wifi hotspot.
I have Android 4.2.1 (latest OTA from Google).
There is a bug with this version or it's only because I activate LTE manually ?

what is the fix to get hotspot internet sharing with the Nexus 4 ? Do i have to had a APn for 3G and swith that it to share my connection ?

i recently got a rom from revolt on my n4 and i switched cdma to lte gsm wcdma auto
i also went into build.prop and wrote down telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1. i went and to setting, more, mobile networks chose the correct setting. so now i got 4G. great i can make calls. GREAT. but i cannot receive calls...
need help with this. im really choked about this ROM

Even if I select "LTE/CDMA" in the Mobile network settings menu. The settings page keeps displaying "CDMA preferred".
Does this mean it didn't work? In quick settings, I see my mobile data connection as 3G Bell.
LTE only seems to work when using the *#*#4636*#*# trick in the Phone app.

Thanks, but LTE doesn't work in my country, its always stick on lte/gsm/wcdma but it doesnt detect my gsm so i have to manually set it on GSM only but wont stick here every time i restart my phone i have manually set it on GSM only otherwise it wont detect my network
Any advice ?

How can I make "WCDMA Only" the default selection?
Where I Iive there is no LTE and the coverage of the service is quite poor, so the phone keeps jumping between E and 3G/H. I have to manually go into the phone app and select "WCDMA Only" is there a build prop tweak to make the "WCDMA Only" the default option instead of "WCDMA Preferred"?

Aah Crap ! Well thanks man saved me from buying on guess i will have to stick with my rezound for now then

For everyone still searching for a solution to this problem, this worked for me. Go to phone information and turn your radio off. Then switch to LTE/GSM/CDMA then power down, DO NOT TURN YOUR RADIO BACK ON. Now remove your Sim card, put it back in, reboot and you should be good to go. DO NOT HGO BACK INTO PHONE INFORMATION OR ELSE IT WILL NOT STAY
If it still isn't connecting try fiddling around with your APN settings.
