Teach Swype... - Vibrant General

On every version of swype I've ever used you could teach swype words AND ADD THEM TO YOUR DICTIONARY. I really dislike not being able to do this now. I know they say type a word and swype learns it... This SORTA seems to work, but if I keep typing "god" and "asp" when trying to say "good" and "app", I'm going to freak out.
Anyone have some tips for this?
I desperately miss the long pressing of a word to add it to my dictionary.
PS: I manually typed in pressing (twice)... This is what swype returns for me now that it "has been taught"... 3 attempts
Putting... Pursuing... Pursuing (not pressing)
Help!
O, and I love swype, do not recommend another kb. I've tried many and that is not the intent of this thread. Thank you!

Have you tried watching the video on hopping? It's really an interesting concept, and ever since I started to use it my typing has become a lot quicker. If you visit the swype site you can find it under their tips videos.

I remember reading a way to delete words from the dictionary but I forgot how. I know occasionally I'll swype a word and it will throw in a some jibber jabber that doesn't even look like a real word, at least not one I would use.i need to see if I can find again how to delete words from swypes dictionary. Also in setting you can change the accuracy vs speed. I haver never messed with it, mine is still at factory settings but you might try it.

Just watched it, thanks. Here is my attempt at 3 problem words after watching:
app
god
pressing
Certainly better, not perfect.

You can teach swype new words its in the training video that comes with it. Shows you how to add new words.

If you want to type a word like good. You must do a loop on the o.
Like g -> o -> loop around on o -> d
To add a word, type word in, hit space.
Works perfectly for me.

I'm not ignorant to swype, and like I said regardless how many times I swype good, it turns out God.

It works fine on the 4 Vibrant's I have played with so either your screen is broke, you are having a very odd software issue, or you don't know what you're doing.

Good. Goya. God. God. Good. God. God. Good.good god god god god god
the user is not the issue okay. I've seen others with similar posts as well.
I will say it is much easier, and more accurate with my case off. It tends to block my finger from reaching the edge of the screen.

I see this as well. In addition, wevery time I try to swype the weird want, I get wasn't. Very annoying.

On my vibrant using swype. Good good good goo goo parallelogram. My trick to double letters is to wiggle up and down on the double letters for problem words. So on good I move my thumb from the bottom of the grey box near the top, then back down. Got it? God. Lol...that's the first "god" I got whole typing this. Good good good good god god good. Yeah don't circle, wiggle. Side to side works as well, just not as effectively I find.

I notice my gf doesn't swype entirely accurately because she isn't 100% accurate with her fingertip placement. So when trying to do the swirl around a double letter as in "good," problems arise.

Good good good good good good good good good good good good good good

Looks like user error to me...

You type the word you want to delete. Double tap it to select it. Hit the Swype button. You will get a prompt asking whether you want to delete the word.
If you want to just correct the word, double tap it and select from the popup of alternative words.

New text input system (beyond t9)

I would really like this one:

Really really nice
http://www.swypeinc.com/index.html << here is the product website
This is awesome. I'm looking forward to test it.
Really nice idea
This is just awesome, i can't see it working in theory, but in reality it does, it's great.
He convinced me with Mississipi
great idea. i haven't seen the video just read the text and seen the picture. it seems it is more for one handed use, because you have to hold down your finger until the word is completed. I personally use both hands/thumbs on my hardware and software keyboard (mississippi took me 6 taps to get the word with TouchPal, now unless swype can beat those taps it won't improve only degrade my productivity)...I'd still give it a try though it seems cool.
Swype uses one 'tap' for Mississippi.
Watch the video.
Looks Awesome!
This looks AWESOME! I signed up for the beta and received an e-mail telling me they will let me know when the beta is available.
one word - WOW
This looks simply AMAZING. I can't wait to give this a go, as I've yet to be too impressed with ANY other input method over the years; although there's been some great ones. If swype works as promised, I reckon this could be the 'be all, end all' input method.
good info, thanks.
Wow I canĀ“t wait to test it!
this will be intresting for both my diamond and touch screen laptop
man, this is unbelievable. considering most of the time is wasted on finding the right letters on the virtual keyboard when/when-not using a pen, this will be amazing even for touch usage.
i'm mind blown. gotta get this
Interesting to note that someone else has had a go at this already:
http://www.mobiletextinput.com/
But definitely this keyboard looks better
It surely looks nice, and with a stylus it will rock, but don;t you think the friction will be a little too much for thumb writing?
I've seen the video on this programme (I think it's an interview by CNET). You sure can swipe around the keyboard fast.... but you need the engine to come up with the list of predicted words for you to select. If that can't be improved, while you will have an easier time to just 'swipe' your finger around, you may not be able to input your text a lot faster. You may end up spending more time waiting for the list to appear and select the desired words.
this is awesome but I feel strange..I think its impossible using swap the letters can appear exactly as we want..I mean when we want to write
"allready" how can we swipe over from a to l and how bout double l? hard to use i think

firstly.. its "already" one l..
but I read on CNET that it is actually really easy:
"Little tricks make it possible to capitalize words (jerk the stylus up and down) or select double letters (wiggle the pen over a letter)."
the only disappointing thing is that in the video, the portion that is actually on a WM device, the keyboard appears sluggish and there is a delay when entering words. hopefully thatll be improved!

i'm sure we can worry about the delay think when we get to the "using the keyboard" bridge... and give feedback, just like with any other app.

Best swype settings that work for you?

I'm still pretty knee to swype so I'm wondering what settings work for you with accuracy, consistency, and speed. I have a hard time getting want instead of wasn't.

Swype settings? I just use Swype the way it was preloaded onto the phone. I caught up super quick. I will never go to another phone without swype.
I've been bumping up the accuracy vs. speed slider and it seems to help as bit.

Best thing that worked for me? ACTUALLY using their tutorial. Totally helped, and I've been loving Swype ever since. Amazing.
i use stock settings (except i turned off audio feedback cause it was annoying). i went through the tutorial. but the thing that helped me most getting used to swype was using it after a couple beers (not drunk, but just a little buzzed). it helped me try to go faster and see the how accurate you have to be while not trying to over think it. now swype is like second nature. once i got swype on my g1 i pretty much completely quit using the hard keyboard and haven't looked back since.
also, knowing how to use the correction feature is nice. like if it brings up the selection, and the word you want is the first choice, you can just start typing the next word and that one is automatically chosen. and after about a week or two you should have most of the words not in the swype dictionary added in which makes it quicker and easier.
I'm using stock settings also. It has just worked really well right out of the box. My iPhone buddies at work are soooo jealous.
What helped me the most was the tips and tricks short videos on the swype website. I highly recommend watching them. I learned a lot of good tricks there:

I know the thread is a bit old but I think it's still relevant.. Here are what I consider to be the best swype settings. These are of course my own opinion but they work really well.

This is an older thread I made on this topic with what I consider the ideal settings:

I'd strongly encourage using the latest beta (not the stock swype). Night and day difference. The autocorrect feature SUCKS in my opinion.

8pen Keyboard - Out now

8pen has just been released in the Market, I have just installed it and typing this with it, it is strange but I think it could be OK once I get used to it.
Its 99p in the market, I am going to try it for 24 hours and see how I get on with it!

wow, i still don't understand after watching the video.
Surely everyone uses their thumbs to type so the videos all wrong.
In south Africa. No paid apps in the market. Downloaded mymarket. Can find 8pen but when I click install nothing happens. Mymarket works perfectly for free apps. I am willing to pay for 8pen. Any advice?
Wow that looks just terrible. Typing a single letter with that takes like 10 times more time compared to a qwerty keyboard. It might be less error prone when you get used to it but it's still slow as hell.

Suggest you email dev and he may allow you to purchase via PayPal and send you the app. Problem with that is you always have to check his official app site and remind him to email you any update released. I purchased a To Do app called DueToday like that, oh, and also Tasker in a similar manner. Sucks but what can we do?
BlindType looked so promising and I was waiting for it to get released. Then Google bought the company out! So you'll definitely most likely see BlindType as default keyboard on Gingerbread (Android 3.0)...conjecture...

The same here, I think it will take a very long time to learn this. I use swype at the moment, but I will give it a try.
I will post my findings.
Thanks! They are not coping with their response so that wont happen soon.
I like the idea of an inputmethod that does not involve pressing small keys, but what about lanscape mode? i've got swype and it works great, and if i want to type even faster, i can just go to landscape mode, and i bet landscape mode isn't gonna be easy to use on the 8pen keyboard, which makes it difficult when typing long texts, i don't think this little program is going to have a promising future...
I am using it now and it is very difficult. Swype is much faster.
It is horrible, try it yourself!
I tried it and although I was excited about it at first, it's not a very pleasant experience. It takes too long to spell words and you have to learn a keyboard all over again. Layout could have been better I think. I am not fan of swype, but I think that is a much better experience. This is better than the WinMo6 small keyboards, but nothing compared to the keyboards found in any Android, WP7 and iOS device.
Tried it, wanted to like it, didn't like it.
Uninstalled and refunded.

i have sweaty palm and i live in humid and hot climate. dragging finger across the screen is just nightmare for me any type of input similar to 8pen or swype never work since sweaty finger just create enough drag to really make the finger almost stuck. Normal input work much better.
Same principal as in "letter board" for people who lost their speech like stroke patients
20:50 First forum post using 8pen.
I have always struggled with a qwerty keyboard & I can't find swype on the android market.
perhaps I can get use to this.
I will see how it goes.

Swype - I used to love you

Hi! Is it just me or has swype become almost unuseable since a few ROMs back when it went from popping a box up to horizontal suggestions above the keyboard.
I'm not talking about the aesthetics, it seems as though the dictionary selection, accuracy and changing of half typed and corrected words is just terrible.
Prior to the update I used to breeze through, now I'm lucky to swype in a few words without an epic correction struggle against its will to correct and change.
Swype, once a selling point and a joy to use now just plain sucks for me, and the thought of using it turns me off productive tasks.
Just me? Bad settings? I look forward to peoples input. I can't exactly remember when the change occurred, it was when it went horizontal instead of pop up.

no problem here, actually I feel Swype 3 to be better than 2, fast, accurate and reliable.
Feel the same, maybe I swipe too fast, had to correct three times inn the first eight words

I don't intend to hijack, but I couldn't have an android phone without Swiftkey X on it... only complaint is that I have to use the gmail app for my email instead of the Samsung email one because it is very buggy on the Samsung one....
Same here. Old swype was more accurate.
I did two things:
1) Remove swype that comes with the rom, install the beta from swype.com (its newer)
2) Disable autocorrect
I absolutely love the new one. Much better than before and just as accurate.
The new Swype rocks! Especially with the horizontal word choice window. I can't even consider going back to 2.7. No problems with accuracy whatsoever with the new version on my phone.
It's not just me! Latest Cognition 1.50 just released and Swype has been reverted to 2.x, Designgears said the following:
"I think the new versions suck too, it is no even usable anymore, I can type my message 3x faster with the stock samsung keyboard."

Quit the bull - if you didn't mean to hijack, why are you doing it? Is this an accidental hijack? Jerk.
On topic - never been a huge Swype fan, but been playing with it a bit this weekend - and I concur with those that say the new version is hopeless.
Still a noob with it, but my accuracy was much, much better on the old version.
Not sure I'll stay with Swype anyway - old dog, new tricks....
Make sure you check your Swype accuracy settings. I put mine closer towards the error tolerance end now. Still works fine.

I don't like it that much, have to swipe twice/thrice for a simple word like 'or'. I used T9 Trace on my S8500 before and it never had any problem, even if I swiped on some wrong letters it ultimately gave me the right word.
I am on 2.72 version, at default setting.
Regards.
Yep same here. Spent more time struggling with auto-correction than actually swyping.
I use TouchPal's keyboard now. Surprisingly accurate even when you mash the wrong buttons, high degree of customisability (you can even use the classic numpad keyboard), and they will also be implementing the swyping functionality in the next major release (hopefully more usable than the current version of Swype).
I've found, disabling auto correction helps a million.

I absolutely agree with every word you said. Please if someone can tell me a way of downgrading to an older version, i will be ever grateful. Its terrible now!!
from my perspective.. swype 3 is better than swype 2 .. well the horizontal word suggestions eats up a line, but in exchange it's easier to scroll down (or right ) for the words.. it's true that it's not perfect when selecting words.. but overall.. it's still the best keyboard...

Swype 3 beta says you can't install it on a phone that was shipped with swype pre installed. Anyway to get the new 3 beta of swype on official firmware?
Is there any way to downgrade though?

I signed up for beta testing. Apparently due to get it soon, according to an email they sent me (after two months without a peep from them!), so we'll see. The new default android keyboard also has swipe on it, but it's nothing like as good as Swype's, even though the word prediction is better. Word prediction on Swype was apparently developed by Martians who were better suited to throwing rocks at each other rather than using any known human language to communicate.

And today I got it! Early impresssions...
Word prediction OK (obviously better than Swype), but no way of backing out of a bad word guess. You have to accept the word, then delete. Kind of slows you up.
The Flow's touted "never lift your finger again" is garbage. At least in this beta implementation. Again the problem is bad word guesses. You get half a dozen words in (swipe word, swipe space, swipe word, swipe space, etc), then bad word guess. Guess what? You have to accept it! Then delete it. And continue.
Flow also has an annoying habit of occasionally offering you just one word, and sometimes it's not the word you want. Why they've done this is beyond me - Swype is rubbish at guessing sensible words, but they rarely offer you just one guess.
So, in summary. Swype is still faster, with a better swipe implementation. Flow's word prediction is occasionally brilliant, so that helps. But it needs a bit more work to crack some of the UI issues. I'd rank it above the new 4.2 native android keyboard with swipe, but still a bit below Swype. Problem is that Swype is sometimes just so rubbish with its word guesses that I hate using it, so the first opportunity I get to use something else I will.

Yes it is quite slow as well... and the method that they have as of now for getting out of bad guess is stupid.. but hey, its a beta, they are gonna take feedback... also it wont spell english words the way it should even if u swipe slowly and correctly.. in that scenario its lamer than swype.. soon they should be coming up with fixes.
