Strange stuff about replacement phone - EVO 4G General

So I contacted sprint about a dead pixel a long time ago, and they told me to wait until it gets back in stock on the website to get a replacement. The thirty days pass and no stock, so I contact sprint and they say I should have gone through tech to get a replacement. I do this, and I get sent the refurb replacement.
I guess I was kinda lucky, I got a 003 epson screen (I'm coming from Novatec) that's still on 2.1, so I can still root. There's the smallest thing underneath my menu and back buttons, it's almost like a scratch in the black stuff three, and a tiny bit of light leaks through. Hard to see if thee phones not st the right angle. The phone seems a little off though, and I noticed the back battery cover and the small surround around the phone are a different color, like graphite compared to the black. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about:
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Doesn't show too well in the picture, but in person it's fairly different, it looks like a metallic paint or something compared to the flat black. It does feel a little bit less rubbery too.
The little scratch on the bottom is almost enough to make me want to seek out another replacement, comparing it to the tiny dead pixel I had it seems like I went through so much hassle to get something else that is just equally as annoying for such an expensive phone.
I'd be hard pressed to be able to get another 003 that's rootable, though root may be coming to froyo in the future I suppose.
Other differences with the refurb:
Inside the battery cover there are markings for XD-01 everywhere, on my old phone they all said XD-01 and the number 100507 followed it. The number 100507 isn't on the refurb phone anywhere.
There is a refurb sticker that says VTO 07/22/10 on it

Hard to distinguish colors in that picture, one back has light reflecting off of it, the other doesn't.
As for the scratch, it's a refurb right? Not much to comment on that one I think.
Edit: Do you still have both phones? Could you take the screen of the new phone and install it into the old phone?

I'm not so sure I'd want to do a screen transplant, I figure that's how the scratch got there in the first place...and my old screen has a dead pixel. Maybe I could just change the glass?
Yeah here's another pic, altho it's still hard to tell.

Bright spot in the lower right of screen

There's a bright spot on my screen its not discoloured just brighter then the rest of the screen about the size of a pencil eraser I brought it to the Sprint store to get a replacement but they told me its because I dropped the phone yes I have dropped it previously and you can see the scratch but the off sent cracked at all just a scratch on the case I asked the tech if he could prove that it was from droping the phone he said he can't but wont order me a replacement has this issue happens to anyone else any ideas on what I should do?

go to a different store until they replace it
my replacement was like that, i was like, eh i can live with it!!
my first one did it. it was a biotch to get it replaced. Then my new one started doing the same thing in the same spot. It really only noticeable on white screens. I have insurance from best buy so im just going to smash the mofo and get a new one when i get back from the desert. hopefully they have some new hardware revisions out by then and it will be all better but ill probably just get stuck with a refurb.
I have the same issue with mine. It just started here recently. It's not bugging me too bad, so I'll just live with it. And I haven't done anything to mine (no drops).
So it's not something under my screen protector. Good to know.
It bothers me on bright white screens, but everything else about the phone is great. I'm not sure I'd trade this in and potentially get a phone with light leakage, screen raising, etc. Maybe I will eventually get it looked at, though. Like, after hardware 0004 and 0005 come out?
We'll see.
Could anybody post a pic of this phenomenon?
@zhensley-Unless you've just bought your phone and they roll out the 004 revision pretty soon, your chances of getting one are pretty slim. If i'm not mistaken after the 30 day return period any replacement phone you would get is a refurb. I'd definitely wait a looong while until the 002/3's are less common to even think about getting a refurb.
I have this too. I have not dropped it, and taken good care of it (albeit, without a case / screen protector). And yes, it only shows on white screens - and mine is the size of a large dime. It's annoying, but I can live with it. I don't even want to attempt to deal with Sprint.
+1
I am on my 2nd EVO - the first was not like this (002) this is a novatek 003 - and i only really notice it on white screens as well.. my phone has been in the official HTC rubber case since day one
but I can live with it for sure
Yeah my phone has that bright light to at the right too I had never dropped the phone its been the since I bought the phone
you guys shouldn't just sit on this problem. some of the earlier EVO's had this issue, there was a thread about this, and they took them back for replacements. my first one was like this. now mine is perfect.
Had the same problem with my first Evo, never dropped it, even my laptop has these spots.
So, I had the issue too.
I called into sprint store in West LA, and asked if I could get a replacement for the bright spots.
According to the rep I talked to this has been happening more and more; and said come into the store and we can order you a replacement.
I went to the store 5 hours later, and I talked to the same person I talked to on the phone, and he placed the order without even looking at the phone. I was in and out in 5 minutes.
Pretty Easy. Not sure why OP had so much difficulty.

Brand new SGS2, screen defect

I just took delivery of my SGS2 yesterday, and I gotta say I absolutely love this phone. Coming from an LG eXpo with WinMo 6.5 and never having used Android, it doesn't even feel like a phone. Plus with all the easy integration with my Google accounts, I've never had a smoother transition to a new device before. All this makes it all the more difficult for me to have to send it back...
I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this problem, but it looks like my phone came pre-packaged with burn in or something in the form of a dark circle near the upper right side of my screen. I've attached some photos of what it looks like.
I noticed this abnormality in the first 10 minutes or so of using the phone while looking at some photos on my Picasa account. I almost feel like this phone could have been a refurb unit, or the screen was reused or something. In fact, there appears to be more substantial burn in than I can photograph, as there are several other places where I can see strange distortions. Most, if not all, only show up when the brightness is less than 100%. I'd thought maybe it was some widget that caused the burn in, but I haven't been able to figure out which one it could be.
Anywho, I've already arranged an RMA thru Expansys-USA, and they did so without even asking any questions after my email with photos of the problem. So far I've received amazing support from Expansys-USA and definitely recommend them. Also going to see if I can request a replacement sent before I send back this one so I won't be without a phone during the shipping time, something they mention is possible in the RMA email (though they do charge you for it, to be refunded once they get the defective unit back and inspect it).
Would be interesting to see if anyone else has this problem. If there's already another post on this subject, sorry about this new one... didn't see any when I searched tho.
I can see the same thing on mine if I put it on the lowest brightness setting and display a grey image. Nowhere near as pronounced as on yours though, have to really really look for it, so can't be arsed to do anything about it.
Interesting that it's a perfect circle though, could it be just above the CPU or something?
Nope, haven't got that circle on mine at all.
Maybe an assembly worker lost their wedding ring, lol...
You'll be fine, it's an RMA for sure!
Defo a faulty phone
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I believe that mark is from the vacuum suction cup on the assembly line from the automated machine that handles positioning the display component. It technically should disappear over time, but I don't know how long.
I don't think it's the CPU, though to be honest I'm not sure where it is under the screen. There is that odd gold-colored sensor or whatever under that area, I think.
If it's a wedding ring, maybe this phone's worth more than the sticker price! haha
Vacuum cup huh... that's pretty bad if it's damaging the screen while doing that. I don't want to wait and see if it will disappear. If I do wait and it doesn't go away I'll be out $725 on a phone with a screen that'll constantly bug me.
Kinda funny, as I was looking at the photos I attached, I saw two rings... one in the photo, and the real one. Startled me when I first saw it.
I didnt have the same problem as you but i had line banding or something on my one.. i had to replace it 4 times then noticed it overheated+smell coming from it.. so i just returned it and got my money back.
Just be aware that you might get another faulty phone.. If i was you i would wait till it comes out in the US.
That sucks, and it's not good that other people are having some issues as well. Good to hear that Expansys is honoring their agreements though
This is why I don't import anymore

Could well be spot on. I don't know if I'm imagining this, but I'm having more and more trouble seeing this ring on my display heh (had the phone for 9 days now).

Man, that's really unlucky! Knock on wood, I hope I don't get another bad one. However I'm not sure waiting will do me much good. History has shown me that branded devices tend to have a lot of crap on them and lack certain features at times, and I don't have as much time as I used to to keep up with the scene to make the phone operate better all the time. Also, I'm contract-free with unlimited data on AT&T, and I don't like being locked into contracts. This isn't my first non-US phone, though. I'm happy to pay the extra money so long as it means I don't have to sign a contract.

From the Expansys-USA thread, sounds like they'll ship the phone back to the UK to have it serviced for you if it ever goes bad. This doesn't sound uncommon, either, as I've had a friend here ship his JP Xbox 360 back to Japan to have it serviced (with a another friend's JP address), and another friend in Japan had his laptop sent back here to have it serviced. Also, there's always the chance a non-import one will be bad, too. Luck of the draw, I guess, and perhaps early-adopter woes. lol
Got my replacement on Saturday, been playing with it ever since to see if I could find any further problems. Definitely no circle this time around, and some of the vertical banding I saw on my old phone in the notification screen is gone, but now has some very slight horizontal banding. Not a deal-breaker tho, so this one's staying with me. Also, hard to tell but I think the yellow/dark left screen problem is present, but so slight I can barely detect it if it's there and not a trick of the eye.
Gotta thank Expansys-USA for their great customer service. I'll definitely order from them again.

I would have it exchanged for another if you can. I had mine exchanged, but since I went with the cheap option the whole ordeal took almost a month (slow shipping). My replacement doesn't have a defect, but it's possible I have the yellow tint problem others have been reporting. I don't see it tho, and if it's there it doesn't bother me.

E Ink Spot after rooting... - Any fix? :(

Hello,
I just rooted my NST successfully with Touchnooter. After I used it a few minutes (about 5 mins), I found a black spot in the middle of my screen which won't go away.
It's everytime there, no matter what I do, even if it's off I can see the spot.
Powering the nook off and on again doesn't help.
Since I imported it, I can't replace it. That's what makes me really, really sad. Is there any way to fix this stucked spot?
Send the picture. It may help understand what is happening.
I'll do a picture if I'm at home.
After I used ADW Launcher and opened the App Drawer (where I slided from left, to right, etc. to look for the app i was searching), I got a stuck pixel (the e ink display doesn't have pixels? that's why i called it ink spot or stuck spot).
It looks like a dead pixel which is black all the time, even if my nook is off.
There have been a few reports of dead pixels.
I heard that somebody got an exchange because of it.
I doubt that anything you did with rooting caused this.
There are multiple "pearls" or blobs per pixels. See this microphotograph:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pamoroso/5407255967/in/photostream/lightbox/
I don't think that you are seeing a single pearl getting stuck.
It seems to me that the problem must be electrical.
If it were me, I might try just for the heck of it to see if it could get "unstuck".
I'd try some full-page black white transitions, but I wouldn't hope too much.
I'd go for the unrooting path. If it comes back to original state, re-root again and check if the problem shows up again.
Forcing a black screen and coming back should work (sort of a screen reset), maybe a screen check program would do the trick (look for it in the market).
I already did use my backup, but that didn't help, sadly. It seems to me, that this pixel is burned in the screen now.
I also used a whole dark screen because I also hoped to reset this pixel, this was also not working.
Aww, it's driving me nuts. Is there really an app in the market that could help me? Because dead pixel at an e ink device aren't that normal. Oh well, so sad. And I paid 200€ for it + 1 cover + 1 light because of the import, now that. T_T
Thanks for your replies, apeine.

Yow! They were selling refurbished ones on eBay for $65.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Barnes-Noble-Nook-Simple-Touch-2GB-Wi-Fi-6in-Black-/300688948315?afsrc=1
Hmm, well they seem to be $79 now.
So, nobody knows a fix? T_T
like already said thi is a hardware issue..
it happens if you root or even if you root not..
its like you said a dead pixel.(on a TFT its not that bad because there are more pixel)
use the support(remove the root before)
thats the problem with a importet divice
its not cheap incase of an supportcase
As much as I like the Nook Simple Touch's general design, I have to say gross light diffuse!!! One day of use, extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely extremely careful on the screen. Now I have a white spot (when Glowlight is on) and black spot (noticeable on white background). Come on B&N! I really liked Nook (still do), but going with new Nook Glowlight (2013) is not an option for me at all. Up to now, no eReader can come close to the lovely Kindle Keyboard. It's like Windows XP of Microsoft products!
P.S. I guess the black spot occurred because of rooting, if not just because of bad design of NSTwG.
The black spot was definitely unrelated to rooting. The fragility of the light diffuser film is a very well known issue since day one. When the glowlight first came out bloggers posted pictures of their damaged bright spots. Though of course B&N never admits anyvsuch thing on their web site, so people just keep unwittingly damaging them. Get a replacement and use a case that protects the screen at least when not reading. I use a Speck case that has a formed shell that snaps onto the back and a hard book cover front. The whole thing is covered in fake leather. The inside of the screen cover is velvet-ish. I damaged mine too when I first got it. I was extremely careful too. Since then I use the case religiously and I know not to let anything touch that screen at all not even casually. Just my fingers. Since then no problems. I agree it is a bad design to be so delicate and bad policy and bad customer treatment not to warn you about it.

Thanks! yes I was aware of these issues right off the bat, but bought one as my 2nd eReader. Believe it or not, after this happening, I'm just more in love of my K3. It's just such a sturdy beast! Best of all readers, for me it even defeats Paperwhite or what not. It gets beaten around in my backbag etc. and I've had it for several years now. No wear. Handsome as first day.
My plan was to make this my main eReader, but now I can't fully trust it, so it'd still be my night time reader. Now my plan: get a case, be even more careful... and cherish K3.
Edit: Well, I have to say that the black spot is extremely small, like 1 pixel. You have to really look close to notice it. The white spot is even smaller and just noticeable in Glowlight and from one direction! From 3 other directions, it's not noticeable at all. With this, I realized: 1. The device had been like this since I got it in mail. 2. Rooting has nothing to do with these issues.
I still love my NSTwG though.

[Q] little screen issues

my problem is that when i received my device i found a small bend (like if a small ball hit the screen )on the down button of the screen , it wasn't noticeable even if you move you`re finger across it , then several days a go I was working hard on the device and it got really hot and suddenly i noticed a yellow thing on the screen same place as the bends locate ,
the yellow thing will go after the screen cools down
any idea what is that yellow thing
if any one have any idea how to fix it I would appreciate that
Thank you allot

Do you want to risk waiting? Get Google to replace it asap. You paid hundreds for the device, it should be *perfect*.

Dude I have the exact thing wrong with mine. When its hot I get a really ugly yellow ring there too. Rest of the screen is fine but hasn't dissipated in two weeks.
The bad news is that either you play the play store lottery and end up with a worse device or you do the same with lg. I was going to get mine repaired, or rather have the screen replaced by lg rather than get yet another exchange but another person said that lg charged the repair cost and shipped a new phone. I don't know if the replacement is a refurb but it would make sense. The whole point for me with lg doing the warranty repair is to not get a different phone. Everything about my phone is awesome. I think we might have no choice unless you just want to keep it. I was going to but the ring drives me nuts. It is very visible in a sea of white.

it is hard to ignore the problem , the device is fantastic
but what is that yellow spot
is it glue ?
how does glue reached the middle of the screen :silly:
Well the whole screen is glued to the touchscreen. The glue is thicker in that area because of the deformation in the glass. The person or robot pushed too hard when the panel was installed or glued and thus it dried unevenly. I got an order in for yet another RMA but the situation really pisses me off. My last is faster binned, perfect speaker and battery and everything else. Hardly any rattle, etc. When the RMA replacement ships I'm still going to call the lg warranty number and see if there's an option to replace my actual screen rather than getting a replacement. I seriously doubt they will scrutinize a device, even one they have repaired through refurbishment, as much as an anal retentive owner like myself will. I'll let you know if I find anything out. Knowing my abysmal record with the play store, my next will be worse than this one.

Dirt under notification light.

There is dust/dirt directly on top of my notification light. The dirt is under the screen but on top of the light and it creates a visable spec of dirt in the center whenever the light illuminates. This is my second Verizon LG G2 as my first was defective and plagued with screen touch issues.
Am I being too OCD that I want to exchange the phone because of the dirt? I am still within my return policy.

is it quite noticeable from an average person's view of the phone? like place it on the table and sit back, if the light goes on can you see it? if not, its not worth the drive just for a little dust on the LED, and im sure you wont be staring at it the whole time. However since you made the statement that you ARE OCD, then whatever floats your boat, you could end up with another defective unit since this is your 2nd G2 and the first one is a defective one, so it is a gamble imo.

My friend, you'll be glad I posted. I too have OCD, I too noticed this. I will harzard a guess that every single LG G2 has this issue, it's just that you and I are hyper sensitive and we noticed and decided to spend the energy to post about it.
I would not return your phone unless you have another defect with the phone. The issue with the dust is the design of the phone, so it will re-occur if you're like me and put the phone in your jeans pocket often. The dust is getting under the lens from the top speaker grill area, you'd have to seal this area to make a difference and then you'd be losing sound for phone calls.
How did I cope with my OCD over this? I accepted by studying the design that this is a flaw that will affect all phones. After accepting this, I weighed the pros and cons of this phone against the REALITY that no single phone is without at least 1 issue. The LG G2 destroys all other phones in nearly every single category. This, to me, is enough to let the dust issue slide. Afterall, what is the purpose of the LED? To shine light. And the dust is not affecting this performance.
You will eventually forget about the dust when you truely accept that no phone is perfect. If every phone has a flaw, this is the best one to have, in my opinion.
So, getting another G2 will only delay acceptance, and you'll be pissed off when it happens again. I am going to try using compressed air to blow the dust out from under the LED cover, that may work, I'd try if I were you.
Cheers!
Its noticeable but not bad its not worth taking apart for that small speck of dust

Or you could just "jump to the unknown" and open up your phone and fix it in 20 minutes.

I am still within my return policy.

i strongly recommend you to go for service center . coz of its loose fittings lately your light sensors will get effect and you will not b able to disconnect phones once you have dialed a call to someone or want to give a misscall to some one, due to dirt on the light sensor.. .
hope u understand

I exchanged the phone
I exchanged out the phone and the issue has been resolved. The replacement does not have the dirt/dust on top if the notification light. Thanks for not making me feel completely ridiculous for posting thread. Your responses really helped and I am much happier now.
