[Q] Is it Possible - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hey guys noob at this so dont hate i wanted to know if it is possible to swap antennae hardware from a captivate to a I9000 i got the i9000 and i am on at&t stupid thing doesnt give me 3G like my beautiful nexus wanted to know if it was possible or not.
Thanks

others more knowledgeable will step in, but don't believe it's antenna related as it is freq band related
if the radio chip in the i9000 isn't there for the AT&T bands (believe they're 850 & 1900 but i could be off there)
search this and the captivate forum for similiar topics - there was a thread about someone activating the AT&T freqs on a Tmobile Vibrant - but don't think they were able to activate them on an i9000 phone
there's a code you punch into the dial pad and it brings up the appropriate menu
there's some info re 3G freq bands at about the middle of the page at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735461&highlight=unlock&page=3
here's the one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735461&highlight=unlock&page=9
and in particular, the below info copied from the above thread
"Well lookie here.
On the phone's management screen, you can actually enable the 850mhz band also. This also confirms what UMTSbands are included on the device.
850
1700
1900
2100
That's in addition to the normal quadband GSM that's already available.
First pic is before I enabled 850, second pic is after that.
Based on this thread in the I9000/GalaxyS forum.
How to do it:
1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] Network Selection
6. Select [4] Combi Bands []
7. Select [8] WCDMA 850 (FDD V)[]
8. Press Menu Button; Select "Back" to take you to band selection screen.
9. Select [2] WCDMA band []
there is another thread, where someone tried a i9000 and couldn't get 3G on AT&T, if i recall correctly - but search the captivate forum for that one
that wasn't the thread i was referring to - if i see it, i'll post it as well"

I know i have been going crazy looking for it cause i would just rather return the device and try to see if someone would help me get one from Bell wireless and have it unlocked i really want the front facing camera and what sucks is i work for att lol

ya i dont understand some the things samsung did no video calling :S the verizion sgs im pretty sure has flash as well, hope u find out what ur looking for

Man if the galaxy s which is sold on bell wireless canbe bought i will trade the one that i have for that it sucks cause i bought mine unlocked and everything just for it not to work on the predominant 3g band on att

sell the UK i9000 and get the Bell i9000M
i posted a message a few days back asking if anyone wanted to get Bell i9000M shipped to USA

Oh u are are u looking to trade or just looking to sell it?

not selling & not trading either
just a friendly service for our neighbours down south
i'm actually trying to get rid of my i9000 Euro version as well
i got it before i found out Bell was releasing the i9000M

oh sweet dude if you could help me out i would soo soo soo appreciate it now i just have to sell my euro version now lol but how ?

you can always go via ebay, kijiji, your local newspapers, forums, etc.
at least that's my plan

You don't understand them bending to a carrier's will in order to get on the top 6 carriers in the U.S.? This was a Verizon decision/negotiated compromise, not something Samsung did to save a few bucks.

Any 850/1900 3G Galaxy S with front camera?

AT&T, with their infinite wisdom, decided to remove the front facing camera from the Captivate as to keep video calling "exclusive" to the iPhone 4. Bastards!
Anyway, is there any version of the Galaxy S out there that supports 850/1900 3G AND comes with the front camera? I know Rogers is getting their version some time in September, but no word as to whether the front camera will be included, nor do I want to wait that long
buy the internation verison "i9000" that one has front facing camera, and it can go video calling with skype/fringe or phone to phone on any Europe/Asia phone network.
just north america have the feature DISABLED, because they want to make people belive it is for "iphone" only

It doesn't have support for 850mhz 3G, or does it? New York city is primarily 850, which is why I'm looking for an 850/1900 compatible model
Bell Vibrant Galaxy S

looks pretty much like the Euro version. except Bell runs on the HSPA 850MHz, so it has the bands that you require
2G probably isn't tested though, since Bell doesn't run on a GSM network

If that's the case, I highly doubt it will work on AT&T.

the thing is, if you are willing to change from GSM to CDMA
DATA will not work, if you are not joined to either GSM or CDMA

Is it DISABLED or is has the camera been removed. I can't tell since there are indications of some kind of sensors on the front above and to the left of the AT&T logo. If it has been disabled there is the possibility of enabling it with firmware or other software. If it has been removed, no software in the world is going to make a front-facing camera work. Do you have actual information or is this speculation?

I get the impression at ATT is trying to lessen the load on their data network. That's why they remove the front camera. They don't remove it from iPhone because they have already forced apple to also disable facetime over 3G in iPhone 4.
Bell's old 2G network was CDMA (and EVDO for 3G), but their HSPA Network is Sim Card based. This includes 3.5G Data as well as normal Voice/Text. So yes, the Bell Samsung Vibrant will work on AT&T as it as the same HSPA bands (850/1900) and it has a front facing camera.
Any unlocked phone that supports HSPA 850 OR 1900 will work on Bell. Their towers broadcast both frequencies, but you'll lose reception in rural areas (and basements) with phones that only support 1900 (like the Euro Galaxy S). I have a Telstra HTC Desire that has only the 850 band, works perfectly in all areas.
I hope the bell version doesn't have a front camera or else I will be very sad with my version. But oh well. By the time bell releases their version, perhaps the 4g epic will be out. Hardware Keyboard + Flash > 15 extra GB
well even so, i still prefer the Euro SGS with only the 1900 band & 2100 band working for both voice and data.
if all else fails, i can always revert back to my old HTC Athena for 850 bands in dire emergencies
DO get the Canadian Bell Version its the same as the i9000 to a T
Yes it will work, and yes it's GSM based with SIM. If you do a quick check of just the BELL website, they Sell APPLE products guys.. which as we know are DEFINITELY GSM... not only that but they sell sim cards on the front page.
I'm getting one first day, and I don't even live in Canada! It's a QUAD-band phone for one thing, world phone dudes... secondly.. it does support 850 HSDPA AT&T bands (they use the iphone4's for christ sakes of course they aren't CDMA!)
on Wiki (it's cited but no clue on validity) for Bell you will see it's basically Canada's AT&T correct? Ma Bell owns a whopping 39% of Bell it appears.
The euro version is not on 850 for us AT&T users so do NOT get that one, get the Canadian 'Vibrant' as they're calling it. I'm sure Rogers will shoot one out soon as well.
Anyways I checked out AT&T on facebook and it appears they are 'testing' LTE late this year and implementing next. I think that's a crock of sheet myself, they do everything last and give their users sheeeeet! Verizon and Sprint and even MetroPCS are rolling it out ASAP it appears beginning next year Goodluck out there kids!
@ap27 sorry dude missed your post there
Yeah I had a desire for 2 months loved it, wanted to move to the Galaxy, the screen is at least 5x better no sh*t do a side by side, I had both for over a month until I sold my Desire for over $150 what I paid for it on ebay hah.
forgot release date is 2 days August 6th and it has the SAME hardware buttons as the i9000 not like the 'Tmobile USA Vibrant', so this pup will flash up stock i9000 rocks asap!
Also guys Bell charges a whopping $75 to unlock their phones, I asked their reps 2 weeks ago with all the info. BUT you can easily go here ( http://www.unlock2go.com/ ) I spoke to their rep a week ago (they're based in Florida, USA) and they'll be doing unlocking for it, $29 one time of course.... not bad.
As for the front facing camera (FFC) I think we all know that once sprint launches the epic and such we will see TONS of free apps on the market for video chat, even more so on your data service not just wifi. Gravy! Live nude chats with the lady for free hah
anyone know if we can unlock the bell version using the same method to unlock the other SGS models?

How to get your Galaxy s working on 850MHz WCDMA

Im running an unlocked i9000 in Australia using Telstra's network which is 850MHz. After flashing some roms it was only using 2100 and even using the settings at the start of this forum wouldn't fix it (below)
1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] and selection
6. Select [2] WCDMA band []
7. Select [6] WCDMA 850
This seems to point to this being a software not hardware issue.
After lots of messing around i flashed a Samsung i897 Captivate ROM from AT&T which of course didnt boot then flashed another i9000 ROM minus the modem and now its all good. I set the phone to 850 only and had a look at basic info to confirm.
Here are the steps:
Flash your phone with Odin1.3 and I897UCJF7 found at samfirmware(.)com
boot phone (will show AT&T logo but wont boot)
Flash desired ROM WITHOUT modem part (also left out the csc part) im running CSC-I9000OXEJG1 although I dont think it makes any difference.
1. on the key pad, type *#*#197328640#*#*
2. Select [1] Debug Screen
3. Select [8] Phone control
4. Select [7] Network control
5. Select [2] band selection
6. Select [4] combi bands
7. Select [8] WCDMA 850
8. Hit the menu key and select back
9. Repeat step 8
6. Select [2] WCDMA band []
7. Select [6] WCDMA 850
8. Hit home key
on the debug menu you can select basic info and it will tell you if it has worked. Although 850 is the best band here and my phone defaults to it if your in a 2100/850 area you may need to test it in a 850 only area.
Just out of curiosity, which Galaxy S variant are you using? AFAIK the one sold by Optus doesn’t support 850Mhz ?? And Telstra has not yet released their Galaxy S
I am interested too, same situation, you sure it is connecting at 850Mhz 3g ?
*snip*
Nevermind.
Anyone else tried this?
I'm on stock ROM and although I've rooted I've never flashed anything yet so not confident without a step by step.
This was a Telstra one so with the default firmware it worked on Telstra but as soon as i flashed anything else it stopped working and presented exactly the same symptoms as a Europe version (which is what our rep said we had). I have tried every other combination of firmware and settings suggested and this is the only one that works. I'm technically minded so if somebody wants to post a how to on dumping a Telstra ROM I work for them and can get you guys the firmware.

So your i9000 from Telstra already has 850mhz support?
When I first read your post, I thought you had an international i9000 and somehow magically made it work on 850mhz 3g.
I'm totally confused.. are you folks saying that the Galaxy S has CDMA capability as well as 3g and HSPA??
One would think that would a huge feature which would have for sure been exploited by now.

Exactly my thoughts, but I have an open mind.
Would be nice if it worked, so I will certainly follow this thread.
I have been thinking of flashing the Bell modem to my Galaxy S to see
if I can improve my AT&T signal at my home, as it is bad.
Other areas, it is fine and so probably I have little chance of improving it,
but think I will try.
With the HD2, I was able to improve my AT&T signal by changing the Radio.
I don't get 3G, but don't care about that, since WiFi is readily available.

WCDMA is what UMTS/HSPA/HSDPA is called. It is not your run of the mill CDMA.
hang on im confused... you have a phone that isnt released yet, so you must work for telstra or know someone from telstra that was stupid enough to break the NDAs between samsung and telstra and give you their unreleased phone... yet you dont have access to the telstra rom and youre offering to reverse engineer the telstra rom on this forum?
youre treading on dangerous ground my friend. corporate security always finds out be warned.
The Phone has been out on Telstra as of today...and could be bought outside of a plan through telstra stores since friday.
really?
telstra didnt advertise that one very well... oh well their loss
im gonna have to go get me one of those. the hardware is different though. international i9000s dont have a 850 radio whereas Telstras one does. so its getting other peoples hopes up saying that 850 can be enabled when it cant be.
I was going to get one until i found out the price Telstra is selling it for.
But yeah this thread certainly got my hopes up
yeah youre better off buying a vibrant from the USA or Canada and flashing it with a telstra rom. save yourself $300.
Yes I work for Telstra had the phone for a week now, gotta have some perks yeh? The price of the phone outright it $879 as far as I know. My point is when I flash with a Europe ROM and try to enable 850 it seems enabled but doesn't work which is what people have been getting so far. When I flash the radio of a phone designed to work on an 850 phone it does work. Someone test it and find out take you 10 min to test it. If it doesn't work then that blows but if it does I know lots of people here would want to do this. PM me if the instructions are not clear.

Okay, copy that. Makes more sense, but now what is all this about then? Me being on the Bell using the Bell I9000m am I missing a feature, is there something I can enable to make my network strength better. Those of us on Bell or Telus can attest that not having 2g sucks. The folks on Rogers get much better penetration of signal into buildings and such. Sure would be nice to fix that if possible but I have a feeling that I'm barking up the wrong tree...

I'm at work, so I can't test it right now.
While it would be cool if it does work (so I can switch back to NextG from Vodafone), I don't hold much hope at all of it working.
Bare in mind that a Telstra SIM does work in the Galaxy S, just not on 850mhz. I had to use my Telstra sim for the first few days before switching to Voda to make use of the 3G network. The Telstra sim only connects at old-school GSM speeds.
If nobody else tests it in the meantime, I'll try to give it a crack during the week. But I work 12 hour shifts, so may not have time.

^^ this. The bell i9000m is really an i9000 (international version). front facing camera and all.
I flashed an international rom (jm5) onto my Bell Vibrant - and was able to enable the 850mhz radio. With a little fiddling (a.k.a the steps in first post, just enable it in combi band first, then in wcdma menu), and making sure the 'wcdma only' setting was on.

HSPA?

Ok who's got the trick to make the phone report what radio frequencies it can do? I have a bunch of Android codes that make phones do certain things, but none of them work on the streak.
I am trying to find out what my device is capable of since there are too many threads out there that say it can and it can't... i.e. hspa....

Ok that code worked, and in phone info section, I am currently set to GSM auto (PRL). You're on ATT... the question is about whether or not the device will do HSPA on Tmobile's network. Currently I only get EDGE.

Hey Lord60,
Are you in US? If Yes, I would be also interested in getting Streak to work on TMo-US's HSPA network (offcourse if hardware supports it). I think (not 100% sure) EMlist has a option to see all UMTS supported by phone. May be way to even select/set them.
If you find any info, please share it and I will do the same.
I've been asking Dell, if their new unlocked version will work on TMo-US's 3G network. And no one seems to know it.
I already have Streak but like in your case, only works on EDGE.
Thanks!
Im pretty sure it supports the Tmobile 3G band,
I think there may be a thread somewhere, I will check later and report anything I find.

The Streak is quad band gsm. That's 2G speeds. TMo 3G speeds work on AWS 1700 band. There were only a handful of beta phones with those specs. If you're looking to flash a whole new Rom including the radio frequencies then I guess it's possible. There are some really talented people here. Dell already has FCC clearance for the AWS version but hasn't released it to the public yet, if ever.

Hey chrisrotolo, I bought Streak back in September w/o AT&T contract and got it unlocked by calling AT&T.
When I put my TMo sim card, it only works on EDGE/2G. It never worked on 3G.
I've seen a screen shot of EMList which shows you and may be lets you select UMTS bands, but in Mr. Steve's 1.5.1, EMList is not included i believe.
When Dell recently announced Unlocked Streak (back in November), there were rumors that it might work on TMo-US 3G network. So far no one seems to know for sure.
So guess we are out of luck, as of yet!
Thank you for the reply though!

Hey Streakr, I always thought that radio frequencies has to do with the hardware and not with ROM.
Now that you mentioned its controlled on the ROM side, I wonder how easy/difficult it is to support this on Mr. Steve's ROM.
May be Mr. Steve could answer it for us.
Thanks for the info though.
Yeah I am unable to get EMList on dJ_steve's 1.5.1, you could ask him to bake it in Im sure, but I can get some cell info stuff when selecting >shortcut>bettercut>all applications....
I would love to find a list of AT&T's (or T-Mobile's in your case) full list of USSD codes or MMI Codes ( eg.*1234# dialer codes), for network, service and diagnostic stuff. I am sure it would be very easy to screw something up with those codes as well.
maybe even some fastboot codes...
I found this link on gsmhosting, anyone know any more of these codes, you can enter from keypad on fastboot screen?

I dont know if you can access any of the mobile networs through settings and manually configure it through APN or manual network operator.
cheers!

I would love to find a list of AT&T's (or T-Mobile's in your case) full list of USSD codes or MMI Codes ( eg.*1234# dialer codes), for network, service and diagnostic stuff. I am sure it would be very easy to screw something up with those codes as well.

Thanks Chris. I sure will ask in community if any one knows abt EMlist. I am sure Mr. Steve has his hands full with more imp stuff to do.
Thanks again.

From what I have been told the radio frequencies are set by the manufacturers. The hardware is capable of doing any of the operators frequencies but how each is set I'm not sure of. I have heard of people who have claimed to have changed a EU version phone to a US version phone including the carrier settings. This is way behold me.
any new updates on this?

diffrence between this and the i9000 galaxy S?

hey guys
just wondering what the diffrence is between the galaxy S fascinate and the galaxy S i9000 is?
i cant find any direct comparisons.
can anyone please help me?
The i9000 is a GSM phone. Fascinate is a CDMA phone.
The i9000 also has an FM radio, we don't

i dont care for radios so no big deal there
i9000 has a Front-Facing camera I believe.
From a bit of research (i.e. Googling ) it would appear that Australia's CDMA network was shut down in 2008, and the GSM network became the only option. A CDMA-only phone won't work on a GSM network, and vice-versa. There are a few phones that support both CDMA and GSM (such as the Droid 2 Global), but most only support one or the other. It would appear that the Fascinate would be pretty much useless in Australia, although the i9000 should work fine if it uses the same set of frequencies as they use there.

The Fascinate is a CDMA phone. In the US, it's sold on Verizon Wireless. It has 384 MB of RAM in exchange for larger internal storage and camera flash. The Epic is a CDMA phone. It's arguably the best out of all of the US variants. It has a slide-out keyboard and six-axis accelerometer and Front-Facing camera and 5MP camera with single-LED flash. It's sold on Sprint. The Vibrant is closes to the original i9000. It's basically the same except that it has no front-facing camera (although the space to add one is still there) and it has 4 capacitive buttons on the front instead of the original 2. It's GSM. The Captivate is the same as the Vibrant except it's sold on AT&T and, by default, can't sideload applications because of AT&T's stupid restrictions.
The only differences are as many before me have said : Its a CDMA phone, It lacks a front facing camera, and It doesn't have the same amount of internal storage as the i9000 (we do still have 512 megs of RAM, the system only makes 3 something available to android like with all of the S variants). In your situation though it sounds like you'd be better off with an i909. Its basically the 9000 with both CDMA and GSM support but its only for the Chinese market so it may be a bit hard to come across (Ive been hunting for one for the longest myslf to no avail)
What about the Samsung Captivate?
If i got one of them would i be going from good to worse if i sell my Galaxy S i9000?
Really want a NextG and can get a Captivate for $599 ( NextG version )
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Samsung had a gsm model on the market. Isn't that what TelUs in Canada uses?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
CDMA only works in the US. GSM is global. So don't worry about the features. make sure the device works on your network FIRST
If it's being sold in Aus it's probably the Telus Fascinate. OP, is the model # T959D (Telus) or i500 (Verizon)?
Both the Telus Fascinate and the AT&T/Rogers Captivate are GSM phones with the 850 band used for 3g down under. Only the Telus has HSUPA, though, so it may be slightly faster.

Not true. CDMA is in the US, Canada, and several countries around the world including Japan and even Australia, up until 2008.
However, with CDMA, there is no SIM card to switch and it's a ***** to switch networks and take your phone with you unless the new network doesn't care if you bring outside phones.
ok just called them up and its the TelUS version, so its the GSM version, and NextG will work
fascinate a good pick then after i sell my i9000?
also, they are trying to tell me this phone now

is that good after selling my i9000?
Uh, no. The Bell Vibrant (i9000m) would be ok, but that's the T mo one which has different and incompatible bands.

No it doesn't: look at the fine print at the link.
Just get the Telus.
The tmobile vibrant does in-fact support the 850 band when its unlocked (just search for tmobile vibrant on AT&T because I cant link it) so either model works
Edit: Or not i suffered from foot in mouth syndrome it only supports the 1900 band

You can unlock it yourself. There are apps on and off the market that will do it for you. Also, the T-Mobile version supports both T-Mobile's and AT&T's 3G frequencies.

[Q] Buying an Atrix 4G, difference?

Hi all,
Im thinking of buying this phone but from what i have read there isnt much difference between the Atrix and the Atrix 4g.
How will I be able to tell which is which? specs are almost the same.
Should add that I am buying used. Also, I am in the UK.
Look forward to your replies!
They are the same phone!
I'm also in the UK, really like my atrix, but coming from a modded android to a locked phone is a bit difficult...

your sure? i read somewhere that the first atrix has 5mp cam which has been upped to 8mp in the new version.
Maybe im mistaken.
Yes ive heard about Moto not playing nice with rooting!
It is the Atrix 4g and the Atrix 2. And the Atrix 4g has a 5 MP camera and the Atrix 2 has a 8 MP camera. The most noticeable thing I saw in the looks of the 2 phones was the Atrix 4g has the speaker on the back at the bottom and the Atrix 2 has the speaker on the front at the top.

yeah that's right... looking at the specs on motorola website, seems that's the only difference!
cool, now i know what to look out for!!!
atrix(4g) is not a locked phone, is it? If you follow the guide, you can unlock the bootloader and flash different ROMs on it.
Another difference between atrix(4g) and atrix 2 is the fingerprint scanner. atrix 2 doesn't have it.
Since you are in the UK you will probably want the "Motorola Atrix" since it has the 900MHz UMTS band needed for some UK carriers like Vodafone and O2.
The "Motorola Atrix 4G" is the title used for the Atrix line that is used in North America for carriers like AT&T and Bell.
Look at these two links and you will see that the main difference is the bands used for their 3G networks. AT&T and Bell use 850/1900 and Vodafone and O2 use 900/2100.
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix-3709.php
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix_4g-3708.php
I could be wrong but this is what I can gather from your question. Also, you might be able to use the "4G" branded one because it still uses the 2100MHz band (if unlocked) but you might experience reduced coverage (slower speeds).
The difference in cameras is between the Atrix(4G) and Atrix 2.
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix_2-4199.php
Which also does not use the 900MHz band.
EDIT: I would also like to point out that they do all use the same "Quad-band GSM" but that is for the 2G(EDGE) network, and not 3G(UMTS/HSPA)

Some suggested the only difference between atrix and atrix 4g is the firmware. But I don't know how true it is.
I have a Bell (canadian) atrix 4G, and I am currently in UK on O2. Is there any way to tell if I can use UMTS900 or not?
If there is a way to tell, and I manage to connect to UMTS900, then I will say there is no difference between atrix and atrix4G.
Right, an unlocked Bell/AT&T Atrix will work on almost all of the UK networks but it will be restricted to the 2100MHz band for 3G(HSPA) or quad-band GSM for 2G(EDGE).
You don't need to try "to tell" if your Bell Atrix is using the 900MHz band for 3G(UMTS/HSPA) because it cannot. It's in the specs, it just doesn't have the capability.
http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Products/Motorola_Atrix_4G/Specifications.tab
Just to clarify, I'm not saying you can't use an unlocked AT&T/Bell Atrix in the UK, all I'm saying is it will not be able to use the 900MHz band for 3G. It will, however, be able to use it on EDGE/2G. I'm fairly certain it's a hardware thing.

People seems to be either pretty certain it is only a firmware difference, or pretty certain it is a hardware difference. But no one can confirm which one is correct...
I do agree, based on the spec from motorola, US/CA atrix doesn't support UMTS900.

Same result I've had. I've posted a question thread on the modems here.

Its annoying me because if its just a software limitation, what is there to stop us from giving it 900mhz umts support? The "workaround" just needs discovering by a developer (I've been mooching around, but i'm not dev!)
O2 UK has UMTS on 900MHz now, and one local to me so I want to use it without replacing it for a UK atrix lol.
What we need is an international/uk user to be brave and strip their phone down and find out for us!
My gut feeling is its something in the kernel/drivers/boot loader provided for the AT&T Atrix. On samsungs there is a secret menu for turning bands on and off.. but none of those codes will work on the Atrix of course (even the generic test ones built into android don't work!)
If you know anywhere close to London where o2 has UMTS900 coverage, but no UMTS2100 coverage, then I will try it out.
If I can get 3G at that location, then my Bell Atrix with UK baseband works with UMTS900. If not, then it is more than likely to be hardware.

If you can come down to Solent Business Park/Whiteley you'll have it there on 900mhz. They were digging up the road a few weeks ago right by the mast (which is pretty much line of sight with my office), and I took my Nokia N900 (on GiffGaff as its a spare!) which supports UMTS 900 and it had full 3G signal (atrix had full 2g), which it could never get before. The nearest 2100mhz mast is like 2 miles away. The atrix will pick the 2100 mast up rarely down there, and when it does, it has 1 bar if that.
I tried a few different base bands while at work, none seem to provide positive results on my AT&T Atrix.
When it comes to the differences of the Atrix and the Atrix 4G, it is the 900MHz UMTS band. The Intl version has it but the AT&T/Bell version does not.
While the OP (@jman316) was looking for the differences between these two versions, you seem to be trying to figure out how to access that band on the AT&T version, which is not possible.
GSM and UMTS are not compatible. UMTS is an evolution of GSM but they are not the same. So, going back to your dilemma, you have stated in your other thread that you currently have an AT&T version. Based on that, you cannot use the 900MHz band on 3G/UMTS/HSPA. Only 2G/GSM/EDGE.

http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-gsm-and-umts/
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_umts_and_gsm
To reiterate, quad-band GSM is not the same thing as UMTS/HSPA The AT&T Atrix can only use the 900MHz band on EDGE/2G, not 3G/UMTS/HSPA.
I apologize if I seem derisive on the matter, I just feel that the facts are right there.

I'm very aware of the differences in the technology. I don't know where your comparison of GSM/UMTS and the links relevant here. Its a quad band gsm and quad band UTMS/WCDMA/3G phone with one band disabled be it through a hardware modification to the chip or by software.
What we are trying to drill down to is this:
1. Is it the same cellular modem chip used in both AT&T/Bell and the international versions?
If yes then,
2. Why is it not possible to enable the disabled band?
Has anyone really done any research into either of these? No. If had a spare pool of money I'd buy a UK phone, and strip it down, and prove once and for all what difference there is, and we could then say, oh so the chips are different models so that explains that or go, oh its the same chip/part number, lets hack the software a bit.
Also Atrix 2 uses normal tft lcd instead of pentile as in original atrix.

We are not on about the Atrix 2, we are on about Atrix 4G (US) vs Atrix (UK/EU/World)
What I have quoted above about 3G on 900mhz should be possible, here is a little pointer (evidence perhaps?) as to why it should work...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334674
http://www.option.com/en/products/p...ons/lgamodulegtm601-609/specifications/#start

http://www.att.com/media/en_US/docs/edo/ATT_Approved_Modules.xls
http://www.scribd.com/doc/54154049/...odem-Device-Specification-Advance-Information
I have done a lot of research into the matter and from what I have gathered the chips/modules responsible for the compatible frequencies can be tailored to specs according to the customer's (AT&T) requests. Which, from my understanding, would be a hardware issue. So, even if they have the same chip, it wouldn't matter, since AT&T can have it custom made to just use the frequencies they approve. Which actually sounds a lot like something AT&T would do, given their track record.
I also found this thread where others are pretty certain it is not possible:
