[Q] Android for Titan takes long to format - Mogul, XV6800 General

Hi
I am trying to install Myn’s Warm Donut on my Titan, i got to the installer and clicked yes to both msgs.
It says "formatting..." and being going over an hour, to the point when my battery dies.
the 1st time i did it, i had my 512mb Micro SD card split into 2 partitions. (1 fat32 and 2nd ext2) both same size.
tried couple times, same thing
then i reformatted same card to a whole fat32 (w/out any partition) and still same thing.
3 days I've being searching XDA forum and Google for the answer, and found nothing
does it take THAT long to install ?
how long should the formatting last ?
Please help
Thanks

that i dont know. i just use a card reader and format then depending on what build im using i wipe and start fresh
same thing happened to me last week on one of the dudes builds. My sd card was ruined. I tried to reformat it and then repartition it but it wouldnt let me repartition even though i deleted the old one. I messed with it for hours, before some one told me that it was ruined. all the transfering of info back and forth fried it i guess. I ended up buying a new one, this time class 6 (old one was class 2) I got it for 20 bucks (8gb) not to shabby of a price! sorry for your misfortune. Good luck

The same thing happened to me about 4 days ago, however Im running cyangones 3.4 Rom not the dudes, tell me ....were you running any themes at the time like the hero theme or any other? Are you using apps to sd as in do you have your sd card partitioned ? Im trying to figure out why this happened to me also, as of right now it has happened twice in 4 days then, I wiped my phone, reformatted / repartitioned my sd card and am not using any custome theme with cyanogens 3.4 rom and it seems to be ok. I only have a few apps right now because I want to make sure it doesnt happen again before I load up my sd card again with apps.
i had no themes and i was using app2sd. but i wasnt using any apps at the time.. just thought i would ad my 2 cents

ok
I reformatted then put files back on G1(including the dudes cupcake 1.3r2(cant give up on the perfect mod lol)) then wiped and Alt-s....only diffrence this time is that i am gonna use appmanager and not put everything on class 2 8 gig so it will not burn out...and hopefully it want destroy my sd card.Thankx to everyone you guys were a big help.
very interesting topic....
same here:
I tried with 3 other sdcards, 2 of them are 100% ok, NO GO, doesnt work anymore. First I thought that my G1 reader has a problem, some time it works, some time not. Im on dudes 12b with apps2sd. The fact that no card works tells me:
- Phone error
or
- Software problem (really strange if this is the problem)
I wipe right now and will tell you if the card works again....
i had similar problem last week when switching from cyan 3.4 to dudes 1.3 i first tried just doing an alt - w and that gave me a lot of errors and force closes so i started over and reformatted/repartitioned my sd. Now my sd card doesnt read when i plug into pc but still works in phone. everytime i want to change/edit sd i have to pull sd out and use an adapter..it sucks cuz the lil sd latch is such a pain to open and close on the g1..
ok wipe didnt anything... really strange thing I can do nothing anymore, card is not readable (in pc it is readable, but not in my g1)....
Config:
Dudes 1.2b
No themes, no extras
APPS2SD, 500 MB EXT Partition
8 GB Class 6 Card
If anyone has a hint for me, any help is welcome.
could this have something to do with apps2sd... this is happening to me as well, and it only started when i switched from jac 1.4 to the dudes 1.3rc1 it works good for about 24 hours sans the bluetooth issue. then the next time i check the phone its all whacked out and says to reformat the card.
Found this, hope that helps, unfortunately I dont have an external reader here:
source: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f7/unable-to-retain-formatting-on-sd-card-17338/index2.html
Turns out this is no more than an annoyance affecting the 1.5 JF builds. (not sure it's exclusive to those).
Anyway, long story short. The phone will always complain about the partitioning on the sd card and offer to "fix" the problem by re-formatting.
The key to the problem is to reboot the phone after the card has been re-partitioned. This will make the annoying pop-up dissapear and keep the partitioning table as defined.
Blank
Rerun apps to SD, uninstall reinstall all listed apps.
I had had this happen also. But I think most of it was my doing. I have a bad habit of not removing device safely after I copy files, I just use the eject button lol.. my p.c. even told me that I had removed usb device before the files were finshed bing prossed.. well whatever happend it didn't fry my card I just had to reformat it and. Run martins great skrip over agin and it was good to go.. I even went to buy a new usb cable just in case lol .. on hero/rosie running smooth ; )

SD Card issues

So I originally asked this in Amon_RA's recovery thread, but was kindly asked to move it here. So here's my issue.
My G1 is not recognizing or creating any ext partitions using either the manual parted method or the automatic script include in Amons recovery. Using the manual method to make ext2 I get the following error:
Error: Input/output error during write on /dev/block/mmcblk0
Retry/Ignore/Cancel
Fat32 gets created fine.
I used fdisk on my laptop to create the partitions and it seems to take, but once I put the sd card back into my phone it disappears. Taking the card out of my phone and back in my laptop, the ext and swap partitions are gone. Anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be, or is my card just pretty much bricked?

I've been pulling my hair out for the last day trying to figure out why it would act like it partitioned fine, but then when I did a 'print' in parted it would only show one FAT32 partition. I had the EXACT problem the OP was having.
Half my day spent looking for some other resolution and then realized I had another SD card with me (just half the size) and tried it in the Recovery with that one with complete success. No errors or anything. I'm trying Paragon Partition Manager for my larger card, but not finding an option for the ext2 (or other UNIX) formats. It's the free 2010 version so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
Bad SD Card - Paragon Killing USB Drivers?

So, version 9.0 has the options for the needed Linux partitions. With that, it would appear I have a bum 8GB card. As stated, the 4GB works just fine - both Transcend Class 6 cards. On one PC it was having a difficult time in the formatting process after creating the partition and I had to kill the application via task manager in Windows. Then it got to where my USB port drivers couldn't start so I couldn't read via SD card adapter or USB cable to the phone with the card mounted. I'm in IT so I've dealt with drivers failing before, but I'm finding myself having to ask my friend Google now as even after uninstalling the drivers I have the same result. I'm afraid it might be due to the Paragon application. More on that below.
I installed Paragon on another laptop at home and it went through the process successfully (at least appeared to) with the 8GB card. Joy had returned to my frustrated being and I proceeded to use the restore image to upgrade from ext2 to ext3 - success! - Then it was wipe and flash. All seemed well in the world until I went into the settings after getting into the OS for the first time (again) to look at my secondary SD Card space and found it at "unknown." Looking at the card via Paragon Partition Manager once again it was showing as only two partitions instead of three with the ext3(2) being "unformatted." Just to be sure, I put in the 4GB card to verify in Paragon it's showing as expected (three partitions in correct formats).
Being the stubborn sod I am, I came to work determined to get the 8GB card working and installed Paragon on a test machine (I run a large testing lab) and redid the partitions. Removing and re-adding the partitions on the 8GB with "success" then simply unmounting and mounting the card to the PC revealed the card is definitely the major flaw all along. After mounting it came up as just the two partitions again - FAT32 and unformatted for the 2nd, even though it was only 10 seconds ago it showed successful creation of the three and formatting. Because I'm one to verify a verification I repeated my steps to see the same result. However, not only did I see this same result I now DIDN'T see the SDCard via Explorer, but could via Paragon. Inspection of Device Manager showed the exact same thing as on my home laptop that stopped being able to read the Android phone with card or adapter with card.
So, my last couple days of fighting and frustration were all because of the SD card of which I've never had a problem with it storing data for the last year with many times reformatting and re-applying data. Odd, to say the least. I am back up and running, but now I have USB drivers failing to start problem on two PC's! This is not a concern with the one at work since I'll just restage it, but I'm afraid it might take restaging my laptop for this to be fixed which as we all know is just not very convenient.
Anyhow, the lengthy explanation was more for those like me that were Googling/searching for a long time for a similar situation.
Cheers.
I have a similar problem. One of my SD cards of 1 GB has ext 2 and 3. But the main one of 2 GB can be partitioned only with ext 2. I am using Amon Recovery 1.5.2. When I press create ext 3 I get an error and not even from console it doesn't work, I get upgrade_fs not found.

I would say it IS the same problem and that your card is not being partitioned properly. The reason it can't upgrade from ext2 to ext3 is because there isn't ext2 to begin with even though the partition process gave a "success" result in the Recovery. I'm using the same Amon 1.5.2 as well. It somehow will not format as the space will be there unformatted if you open the card in a partition application with GUI.
Going to the SD Card settings from within the OS you'll see the SD Card secondary use grayed out and showing "unknown."
So what is the solution? What if I buy a new card Class 6 that can't be partitioned?

I would say keep your receipt and return it for another. I've had issues with SD cards before where they kept going corrupt within a day of use and just returned them for another (same brand, same model) that would work fine.
It's not a hardware problem, I managed to partition it after some tries. I think that Amon RA recovery does not recognize the sd card sometimes. It worked after I hit the reboot button in recovery and pull out the battery. After that I went back to recovery and I could partition it.

bug a friend with a linux///mac machine and partition it with that. i've seen lots of problems with usb/partitioning on windows ,and never had the same problem on mac/linux. 3 microsd cards were 'unusable' according to vista, reeformated just fine with osx.
give it a shot.

You verified it worked with looking in the SD card and Phone storage settings?
I've also discovered that the 4GB card that I was able to partition without a problem was one I should've thrown out as I couldn't remember where it came from until after dealing a couple days of constant lockups on the phone (now that things are running off the SD). It was thrown in a drawer due to going corrupt every few days where the data on it was lost/gone/unreadable. Going out to get a new SD card today.
To the statement about bugging someone with a mac/linux, that doesn't appear to be the issue here since it won't work with using Gparted either (at least in my case).
Just an FYI update, that after buying a new (not the lowest end) SDHC class 6 8GB card, it partitioned just fine in the recovery image along with being able to upgrade the ext2 to ext3 then ext4. Now I'm finally seeing the speedy benefits running Cyanogen's latest ROM. No issues since replacing with a good card.

[Q] After reboot I need to format SD card to run Android - why?

I have 16 GB SD card (scan disk) and after I formatted (with card reader on windows XP) the card to FAT32, I run android successfully.
After reboot I started WM (Energy ROM) and when I try to run android again it stuck on boot screen (white screen with HTC in green).
I need to reformat the card again, copy the android folder again and then to run android again.
Is there a possibility to switch between Android & WM without formatting the card every time?
baby jesus doesn't love you anymore
At first, you posted in the wrong topic. This thread should be in Android General Section.
Second, try to format your card two or three times with this tool:
World Formatter
And read this:
Manual
Cheers
i'm joking i have no idea why that's happenning
I'm not sure why your having that problem, maybe cards can get worn after formatting so many times? Not sure, but I haven't formatted my card in over a month and have had WAY less problems than when I use to format it a few times a week.
I have 8gb card, but i never need format, just im copy Android folder to sd, and run Android.
i suggestion, you try another sd card, may be your card have a little problem.
but whatever is your problem is I love the "Baby Jesus" part .. LoL

And as said, I was also a "format-junkie" but I think it's better to just leave the card as it is. Mine works fine now, I haven't formatted since a month.
i had massive problems on my 16gb card but it all cleared up when i formatted using the format tool under windows mobile on the cell phone. i dont think it matters but im using miri's rom. if you want to know the exact verison of what rom im using let me know.

[Q] Storage Full message

Just flashed [EU/TMOUS][CWR] imilka's HD Sense Series v2.0 1.84[D2EXT][K:rafpigna 1.7 OC] on my hd2 which is an EU one. Had partitioned my 16GB sd card using MiniTool Partition Wizard, making 2 partitions i.e. about 11GB FAT32 and almost 4GB EXT2, both primary. Just copied the zip file of the ROM on my sd card and ran it through AD Recovery (400mb setup one, which is recommended with this ROM). Everything went smooth but after the installation, even if i run the browser i get the message: Storage Full..you dont have enough free space remaining in your phone's storage, whereas in Settings, SD&phone storage my Internal phone storage shows 3.52GB available. I also cannot install any new apps due to this problem.
Any help would be much appreciated.
its suggested not to use larger than 2gb ext partition
Had a same problem with my favorite Hyperdroid. After flashing i could not even receive any sms becaus they were rejected because of no space. And i did not have anything weired installed... I solved it by completly formatting again and tnen the whole prodcedure again.. Sorry but that was the only way that helped me;-) But actually i could not solve the prob itselve...
Thanks for your reply. Yes, mine is the same problem, can't even receive emails or browse the internet, the message keeps showing up. I'm ready to repeat the whole process by formmatting my sd card, but I have some simple questions (might sound a little naive as i'm new to flashing android):
1- Do I need to make only 2 partitions? Fat32 and an ext partitions?
2- Do I need to keep any other files on any of these partitions except the ROM before I start flashing through Recovery?
3- Do you also suggest, like Richy99 does, to keep the ext up to 2GB only?
just discovered answers to the above questions. Repeated the whole precess, repartitioned my sd card (this time 2gb ext), and finally got rid of that storage full message. There's a lag though...seems to be slow on my hd2. Moreover, I cant uninstall the apps that came with this. The uninstall button remains grey.

a) Use 1GB ext, NOT 2GB.
b) Lag is beacuse its a DHD rom, you need to wait for all the apps to sync or wait for OS to settle down. Let everything sync and then do a few reboots and wait some hours. Once everything has settled lag should be gone.
c) If you want to remove stuff use "System App Remover" from market.
d) Read your roms instructions properly.

[Q] Fault in sdcard reader? WP7 works though

I have been having trouble lately booting any sd build or nativeSD rom from sd card.
I have tried formatting cards in windows (including sdformatter) and linux (gparted), re-installing hspl, wm6.5 then magldr, but to no avail.
I get a message in 4ext sd recovery saying that the sdcard has only 1 partition of size "null", it doesn't recognize sdext or swap partitions.
When i try to run an sd build, it reboots (attached dmesg).
All this is despite the fact that wp7 is installed in nand and runs without any problems, this i think means the sdcard reader is not at fault.
I first reported this in here (and up to post #727).
Any ideas?
I have realized that WP7 works even without an SD-card inserted, so a working WP7 is not a proof that a card is functioning well. I don't have anything more, sorry
magldr's clear sd. have you tried that?
also, try using minitool partition wizard bootable disc to erase and wipe everything on the card, and recreate partitions and try again
I have copied the posts in that thread and posted them here, if the problem is resolved, I will delete those posts, to keep that dev thread tidy, as has gilbert32 (I might do it anyway)

Hi securecrt, it booted first time and after upgrading apps (not fresh install) it rebooted to bootanimation then went to lockscreen. I was able to play around with it for a bit and even managed to record a video (it doesn't play back on pc btw) but then gallery FCed and i got a reboot to magldr. Since then it doesn't want to boot past htc screen (attached dmesg).
I will try a fresh formatted sdcard and fresh install. Have to backup stuff first.
WP7 not affected though

Since trying securecrt's kernel on nativeSD, i have been unable to boot any nativeSD rom or any sd build on any of my sdcards.
However wp7 does boot ok, so it can't be my sdcard slot, which i thought might be the problem.
I am at a loss to explain it.
My 4ext sd recovery says that it can't mount the sdcard and does not show any partitions apart from fat32 of null size and B under free.
Please can anyone confirm this, and pretty please do not try to boot this until someone can explain what has happened

Trying that while i type this. Last night i managed to boot a couple of nativeSD roms but after rebooting they refused to boot again. Also one of the cards showed normal partitions in recovery, then later i looked again and all 3 were only showing fat32 of null size.
Really confusing.
After leaving battery out for 5 mins, i looked in recovery and saw all 3 partitions. But couldn't boot sd build, nor nativeSD.
Another odd thing is the led on my card reader doesn't seem to want to stay steady, it keeps flashing intermittantly as if being accessed, i have to wait for it to settle before removing. After swapping out initrd.gz and zimage for another nsd rom to test, i look at recovery and get fat32 null again. Perhaps the problem is in pc, idk. New nsd rom doesn't boot either.
Edit; have attached dmesg of last nsd attempt, tytung's ics

I'd say it's time to go back to stock wm rom and try booting an sd or nativesd rom. if it fails, maybe try formatting a card with wm's format utility (which unlocks wp7's sd card) and try again. i'd say the kernel + initrd.gz have affected magldr and the card's mbr somehow

I think you are right gilbert32, something is wrong.
I just booted into ubuntu on pc and swapped out initrd.gz and zimage for another nsd rom, not booting. No flashing led this time. I had the phone battery out whilst changing OS on pc, recovery shows null still.
WM6.5, here i come again
Edit; I installed wm6.5 (had to do it twice, first time had an error box appear, not seen that before)
2 out of 3 cards were not seen by wm6.5, 3rd card was seen and i managed to boot a nativeSD rom, but after reboot recovery showed fat32 null and couldn't boot after.
I installed magldr and used fourth card i used for wp7. After formatting with sdformatter, deleting mbr, creating partitions with minitool installing sd 4ext recovery, recovery shows fat32 null again.
Tried to install twrp2.2.1.4 but it doesn't boot.
I think i am going to have to re-install hspl.

Thanks gilbert32, I flashed hspl, now i cant flash wm6.5, or reflash magldr, or run any nativeSD build (if i get one to boot it just hangs), so you could say it is serious
I have put my sim in an old(er) phone for now since waiting on calls.
I had formatted the card fat32 32kb clusters.
Gonna give it a break for now, i have been at it on and off all day. need to get things done.
It is odd that 4ext sd always boots regardless of whether anything else does.
Anyway, i am conscious of the fact that it is probably my hardware that is at fault. Until someone else posts in this thread with similar problems I will refrain from further posts here.
Thanks again.

Not sure about a bootable disk, I used minitool on windows 7 (I dual boot pc win7/ubuntu)

I have realized that WP7 works even without an SD-card inserted, so a working WP7 is not a proof that a card is functioning well. I don't have anything more, sorry

But it is fully functional, i can even view contents of sdcard fat16 partition which has an android sdbuild on it (which also doesn't boot)

well i'd try minitool bootable disc. only 40mb. and i always use it when coming from wp7. sd would usually not get recognized on wm without using it so try it.
just delete all volumes on the sd (DO NOT DELETE THE HARD DISC's VOLUMES, ONLY SD )and create one fta32 partition and try 4ext recovery

with my experience, android needs fat32 partition not wp's 200mb fat16 partition

I tried minitool bootable disk and formatted the whole card with FAT32 (32Kb clusters, aligned to cylinder (also tried aligned to Mb) with same result, null in 4ext recovery, and an sd build doesn't boot.

I know, but it (usually) works on that partition. I posted a thread on it here, it was a proof of concept (no formatting/repartitioning needed) and also charges extended batteries in wp7.
it seems more and more about hardware problem.....
can you post a few more dmesg's ?

Robbie, you're located in London right? I'm in Portugal, i can send you a hd2 motherboard for you to test, this motherboard is fully functional, the problem is that it overheats if you stress it too much, but at least you can check if the problem is your motherboard or not.
Cheers

I've seen a video of disassembling and reassembling of hd2 and it makes my palms sweat thinking about it
I have a cracked screen on my phone and was thinking of replacing the digitiser anyway. So I might take you up on your kind offer. I will see if anyone else has any ideas first:fingers-crossed:
Thanks mate.:good:
Robbie P, can you try installing a nand rom like cm7 only on nand?
and nativeSD roms hang on splash screen right? if so, maybe you can use adb. try mounting system manually and data too, then type stop and start
maybe sd isn't mounting well.
also use cd to /dev/block . is mmcblk0pX present there?
It seems that on first android boot after coming from wp7, i am more likely to be able to boot into nativeSD android. Subsequent boots don't work. But it only works sometimes. And the time i managed to boot into tytung's ics, i got a bsod after a call (attached dmesg, seems i lost sdcard).
It looks more to me like a hardware issue with my sdcard port.
I haven't tried nandroid yet. And when it isn't working, i can't connect to phone with QTadb.

you are right i think. sd card slot is probably somehow loose and sd is getting disconnected. maybe after booting tytung's ics, after the call, holding the phone and moving it in hand made the sd card get lost again. try booting multiple times, each time removing and reinserting the sd. ig it works more often, then that's your problem
I've sussed it
I found somewhere that says you can clean the sdcard slot with a piece of card wetted with alcohol (remove battery first). I tried it dry first and found dirt corresponding to the outside contacts of the card. It started booting, but gave a few errors and not all my SDcards showed correct partitions. So i tried wetting a new piece of paper card with GF's nail polish remover and inserting it in and out of slot (paper card should be same width as contact end of sdcard (if it is smaller, it could move from side to side and snag one of the phones contacts)).
It all seems good now.
Thanks gilbert32, yugoport & marvelz for your contributions. Much appreciated.
Looking at the dirt on the dry paper card, most dirt was on pin 8, some on pin 1 (see wikipaedia, tech details, transfer mode), so they only get used in 4-bit bus mode. Perhaps this is the reason why android wouldn't work, but wp7 does.
Lastly, i noticed that my wp7 card (16gb "old" card) has the sides worn down and metal is showing. The plastic from this could have covered the phone pins 1 & 8, or it could have been fluff
Back on android again:highfive:

It seems i posted too soon earlier, and it is back to showing null in recovery
Looking at the sd port, there seems to be a piece of metal sticking up around the area of pin 1 (rhs), so i think it has broken (possibly not helped by me prodding it with bits of card). Wp7 still works though. I took the case off and the port is soldered to the motherboard, so no chance of fixing it, for me at least.
Anyway, I have bought a second hand hd2 from one very careful lady owner (wm6.5 user), never been flashed, no scratches, looks brand new, no bad blocks and cheap. I showed my hd2 with cracked screen to the seller with wp7.8 on it and booted an sd android on the new one to check for connections etc. they were impressed but sold it nonetheless (they said "how did you do that?", I said that it was extremely complicated)
I now have a hd2 with wp7.8 and a hd2 with slim jb on nand dataonext, and I am a happy bunny again

that's good
a friend gave me an hd2 without screen/digitizer. it was supposedly fully working but misses those 2 components.
took it to a local store that is an EXPERT in fixing htc phones (called htc solutions ). they said they had to check if the motherboard was working. it was supposed to be okay. sadly, nope.
they sad it was damaged, so i'm taking it back for the battery
