Help Required - Vertical Line Issue- Android Install - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello people,
I'm not new to the HD2 as I have had it for 10 months now, however I am new to customizing the bad boy. I love the look of android and want it installing but it always seems harder for me to put it on then any of you whizzes out there.
I followed what I though to be the correct method (i.e put on chuckyROM and used HPSL3 to do something (think the word RADIO rings a bell 2.08 or something ??). Anyway, I put on a few different version of the android build and it booted linux but the on the left hand side of the screen there where a number of vertical white lines on the black background, and there they stayed. This happened for every version of android I found.
I then fully formated the SD card (8Gig class 4) which took a good hour and placed FroyoStone on the card. Put in and booted for it to only get to the down a few lines when booting and stopped on something about opening kernal??
Can anyone give me some tips on how I can sort the issue. I have spent a fair few hours searching through the forums but there is just an information overload sometimes.
Noob out

I guess you should modify startup.txt?

Do you mean the horixontal lines of white text? If so.... are you waiting long enough for it to finish loading??? FIRST BOOT WILL TAKE APPROX 5 MINS OR MAYBE LONGER ON SOME BUILDS.
And if by 'opening kernel' you mean "Jumping to kernel".. then the guy above is probably right, you will more than likely have to edit startup.txt or delete the empty android folder, or put the install into the android folder instead of root.
Search for "jumping to kernel" WITH Quote marks.... there are LOTS of posts on the subject... good luck

Information overload, what after a few hours? Why not post in the thread of who's release you're using, or keep reading and trying different methods? A few hours IMO is no way near enough for a noob with one post to start a new topic in main thread!
This is the kind of thing that really puts ppl off and really annoys more experienced users. I bet you would ask and demand this and that and when all said and done you never once donated or said thankyou!
I aint no dev or ROM cook but I sure feel put off by the lack of initiative and makes me feel less like donating to this site or devs.
Ignorance aint bliss!

Don't think there is any need in such strong reactions, the OP has just posted in the wrong area when first using the forum.
If you want to get anywhere with android (and to an extent this community and hobby) when starting off choose a popular ROM and stick with it till you know roughly what you are doing. It is then easy to see how others have got theirs set up and what problems people are having. Try to emulate someone else's working setup from their signature, particularly if a few people seem to be using the same combo. As you hit problems raise them in the thread relevant to the area that is causing you issue.
At the moment you don't seem to know what radio you have installed which could be causing issues. I would suggest going back to the start and ensuring you take your time following everything, it gets easier as you go.

Do you have another SD card you could try with? 1 hour format sounds a bit long for 8gb. Also, you should try changing to a newer radio like 2.12.50.02. You can download it from here:
http://www.vbnfiles.com/HD2 Common/Radios/
Make sure you put the Android folder at the root of you sdcard (d:\Android)
Good luck and be careful with your HD2.

[Fix]boot freeze-up

hello folks,
I have seen some threads talking about some WM device freezing in bootup, and stick in the 1st screen when it says "stick together", I had the same problem, and I did contacted HTC for support, it seems they dont have a solution for that problem but to send the phone to them, whicj gonna take around 10 or 15 days to get back -if the warranty still in effect- and they probably gonna charge you something more than the shipping back fees, cause you flashed your device.
I was Planing to send my phone this monday, but i though lets try something and see what gonna happen, so what i did is :
1 - take you SIM card and your SD card, (don't connect your phone to your PC)
2 - While holding the VolUp press the Power button, you will see a screen with your device information
3 - Now connect your device to you PC, and use one of the Wm costume ROM, don't worry about the guide line, and about the winSync instruction, cause it do work without windows Sync
4 - follow the instruction on the costume ROM application, and just ignore the WmSync one.
your phone will reboot, and you probably gonna see your device radio and room information.
I just did the sameting to fix my device, I don't know if just got lucky
But I do have a problem now, I cant install android on my device, and when i try to lunch CLRCAD, it does not start, even when i lunch haret, the device reboot, if someone know a fix to that problem, so may help me.
dude, out of your three posts, two have been new threads that are strictly related to user-problems in a developmental sub-forum, which just isn't cool.
its like someone walking into your work meeting and asking about the lunch schedule (not the best analogy, but you get the point)
if you're really stuck in something, a hard reset always restores things nicely

i'm just trying to stay in the dark, waiting for the moment to say something useful, by the way hard reset does not work all the time
The only time a hard reset does not work is if there is something wrong with your phone or somehow you corrupted your ROM. In that case going into Bootloader and upping a new ROM does the trick. A Task29 will really fix things well.
As far as "launching" CLRCAD...it does nothing ANYWAY! You just tap it and that is it...it merely sets up the phone for Android to have sound, nothing more...no prompts, no hour glass nothing. (A SEARCH or reading the first post would have told you this.)
If you get resets in Haret then Android did not load correctly. Merely delete your data.img and start over. If that does not work then you likely corrupted your Android build....format your SD card and reload Android from scratch.
I personally have backed up my working daily build on a weekly basis so in case my Android gets hosed, I merely have to copy my entire backup (which is just a copy of my SD card on my computer) back to the SD card after a format (but have yet to really have a need for this except months ago).

[Q] Numerous Questions (NAND & SD Builds & Wakeup lag)

Hello everyone
It's been a while since I've posted here so my apologies. I've been so excited with Android on my HD2 I haven't really gotten around to posting, Obsessive Flashing Disorder .
So I have numerous questions for y'all.
1) NAND is horrible for me. I flash MAGLDR, I've also used the Clockwork Mod, but whenever a build installs, it sticks on the white screen with the "htc" logo in green smack bang in the middle of the screen. Left it for over half an hour in school while in school, all that came up was the setup quiz, which btw was extremely unresponsive and as I pressed next it would go back to the white screen, then I'd wait 5 minutes, and I'd be presented with the next step. I've flashed a NAND ROM multiple times and tried a Clockwork Mod ROM and it's the same. However, on the Clockwork ROM I Managed to complete setup and could send a text, only because my girlfriend text me and I could pull down the "Notifications" tab. It stuck on the home screen saying "loading" constantly. SD Card was partitioned properly too...
2) Gave up with a NAND ROM and tried Windows Phone 7. Loved it! Just needed to activate it. Got skype, got the number, America and Canada only. No problems, the guy gave me the number for UK and I phoned it on my landline to be told to call between 8 and 6 Mon-To-Friday. Fine, I copy my old SD build of android to my SD Card and tell MAGLDR to boot from Android SD instead. It goes fine, loads up, then restarts and I'm told "cannot find zImage", this process just repeats and repeats. Did I do something idiotic or?
Note: The SD build is from the original way of booting WinMo then Android.
3) Wake up lag. Ugh, I get such bad wake up lag. Unfortunately it can take up to 2 minutes for my phone to unlock. Next time I'll try and grab a video camera and record it. Sometimes I also have to press the unlock key numerous times for it to actually even do anything. My phone, SD Card or? There was no lag on WP7, and my SD card is a 16Gb Class 4 card.
4) Colours on the display become inverted. Yeah, inverted, but more towards the whitish end. Again I'll try and get photo evidence next time, but I have to restart and then everything is fine. Kernel problems, or is my phone starting to give up the ghost?
Many thanks guys, I aim to start helping out a lot more!

1) & 2)Stick with WP7
To boot from SD, make sure u set up magldr to boot from the correct directory by going into services, and choosing the folder. If it still doesn't work, then its likely you have to do the following mod:
This Thread
3) Got the same problem, 8GB Class 6
4) Got the same problem, happens randomly and so far only on sense builds for whatever reason.
Haha I would, if there was Angry Birds and associated games
3) Bizarre... I've read it's Kernel related so...
4) Yeah I only use Desire HD builds too. Looks like it is sense based.
Alright Moon2, thanks for your help!

[Q] Having a hard time removing WP7

hello all, first let me just say yeah im a noob and yeah i tried searching.
so like the rest of the world i hated win 6.5 more than anything. seriously. probably something like 1. hitler 2. win 6.5 3. snakes
finally i managed to install win 7, but however the battery is just way to short, some numbers wont be recognized, marketplace isnt open in my country, etc. frankly im ****ing tired of all of this. now i want to remove it and again try to install android on NAND. if not maybe just settle for win 6.5 i dont know.
EDIT
to clarify:
-basically ive searhed everywhere
-i have the offical rom and i want to install that
-i cant connect my phone to zune,
-so when i run the offical htc rom, it just says connect your phone
You need to either flash a stock ROM via sd card method or via bootloader (hold vol down key during power-on, then flash with normal exe from windows).
so, just to be clear,
you got a device with Win mobile on it which you seem to have a massive dislike for and wrongly make an assumption that everyone else doesnt like it, then in a hugely disrespectful manor you compare it to hitler, quite what you are thinking is anyones guess but it might be worth considering a change of manor is perhaps in need
Then attempted to install WP7 without fully reading everything.
Then try and install an original ROM without Fully reading everything
I think That about sums it up
So, in the intrest of sanity, go here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074233
read it all, and if you have an issue reply in that thread
Couple of pointers to help your days on XDA dev out, if there is a thead open on an issue use it, dont make a new one because it makes it harder for people who actually search for things to find what they are loooking for and its a pain for people who try an help because we are forever repeating ourselves
Secondly, when you make a tread it gave you a list of threads already out here with a similar name, if you didnt see anything relivent its because your use of title is pretty poor, Its windows phone 7 or WP7, Noob isnt a word most of us use
Thirdly, if you can not use the XDA search then use google, (i find it much more accurate) i just searched google using this string
XDA DEV LEO WP7 FLASH ORIGINAL
and the third one down took me straight to that thread above
XDA DEV is pretty obvious, LEO is the listed device name thats on this site WP7 is the OS then FLASH ORIGINAL is the subject matter im searching for
Keep it short, like bullet points, not a long story
So, head over there an folk will be happy to help you out, including myself
I hope i didnt sound rude and off hand, im simply nudging you in the right direction
Neo84 You need to either flash a stock ROM via sd card method or via bootloader (hold vol down key during power-on, then flash with normal exe from windows).
ok, thanks for you reply. sorry to ask but what is a stock ROM? is that like an official ROM from HTC?
also tried to hold down the volume key, get the coloured screen, but then cant do anything. where would one find the "normal exe"? thanks for your willingness to help out someone not as experienced as yourself
and dazza, my good man i do appreciate the nugde, but do find it a bit harsh.
you got a device with Win mobile on it which you seem to have a massive dislike for and wrongly make an assumption that everyone else doesnt like it,
-everyone i spoke to agrees, including the guy who sold it to me for almost nothing (bought for 1100 US 6 months before) because he hated it like no other
then in a hugely disrespectful manor you compare it to hitler, quite what you are thinking is anyones guess but it might be worth considering a change of manor is perhaps in need
-well irony doenst work online my bad, haha seriously noone in ther right mind would compare the 2 and/or accuse someone of doing so
Then attempted to install WP7 without fully reading everything.
-i did, it works almost perfectly, reading on these forums ive seen plenty of ppl having issues, so yeah its close to perfect, except the battery drain (which still works for a full day so i can charge at night)
ive searched google, xda and god knows what. and after trying all, my good old hd2 still wont connect maybe in the end its not worth the time and effort, just leave WP7 on there (it is in fact pretty sweet) and buy an offical android next time! however i do feel i have the right to be a bit angry. winmo 6.5 isnt worthy of selling for a high price in 2010.
anyways, thanks for your help, i will check out those links and see where it takes me just remember that not everyone is as experienced as yourself, a friendly heads up works wonders sometimes
I appologise, it was not supposed to come across rude, harsh is perhaps an accurate way of putting it, remember that some of us take a lot of time out of our lives to go over these things, infact some have even added entries in to the Wiki for just such issues (check leo wiki section) and im sure you can imagin that repeating yourself over and over can be quite frustrating!
I completely agree that a "heads up" is always needed, which is why ive nudged (perhaps with a prod or two ) you in the right direction, those few tips can save you a lot of hassle in the future, the google one especially as i know only too well that the XDA search is crap

Older NOOB

Hello Folks!
I guess my question will make me sound dumber than a box of rocks, but here goes. A bit of history before I make myself an idiot. I've only been fooling with computers and these new tech. machines for about a year and a half now and for the most part been having an enjoyable time. I'm 70 years old and I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box anymore, time has dulled my tip a bit. I've been given a Nook Tablet as a Christmas gift by 2 of my grandsons, I intend to change the Android on it to the Ice Cream version but before I do I want to practice on something else first. So I bought a used Nook Color from a lady at church for $50 and I want to try and make a SD card to run the new Android from. The reason I want to use SD card is that there are over 200 books on the Nook and I would like to eventually read a lot of them. I guess I'm just greedy.
I've spent most of the weekend reading this forum information, but unfortunately the more I read the more confused I get. There is a tremendous amount of information to try and digest here and sometimes some of it seems to contradict itself. What are the different types of modified Androids that can be used? Can the Andriod that is installed on the SD card be modified so that more applications can be stored on it? How difficult is it to install the software that allows you to speed up the Nooks processor, that is, can a raw noob do it?
I'm sorry if I've yacked too much. I'm still learning how to correctly ask the questions.
Hey, knock off the old man stuff. I am 67 and my crayon tip is still sharp (although there are some here that would disagree with that, LOL). This nook color stuff is not that hard. I would recommend putting cm7 on sd first to get your feet wet. Then if you feel like experimenting move on to cm9. You can get the rom at cyanogenmod.com (for the encore - Nook Color). I recommend 7.2 RC3. It comes already rooted and overclocked so you can speed it up. And it has plenty of room for apps if you put it on a 4Gb card or larger. If you can afford it, I recommend 16GB (and Sandisk, class 4). Follow this guide to set it up:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12240928
But look at my tips thread linked in my signature to get an updated image to use instead of the one in the thread above. Also read all of section B in my tips, as it all applies to the sd installation. If you need more help, just come back here.

And in keeping with the older guy thread concept (66), you're talking about two different devices, the Nook Tablet (NT) and the Nook Color (NC). The newer NT is much more difficult to deal with than the older NC. It's not as straightforward to install anything on the NT as it is for the NC. Also try to differentiate between the device hardware and the operating system software. The software will get the most out of a particular devices' hardware. The NC's processor is single core; the NT is dual core. The Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) Android operating system applications are pretty much the same between the two devices, but the operating system interface between the applications and the hardware (the kernel) is different, so overclocking, over/undervolting, etc. will be different, too.
Just keep reading; that's how to sharpen the tip. It's never permanently dull until everything else is.

You're right of course. I was talking about how to update his NC. I also have an NT and it is much more difficult to deal with on modding.
Actually, after playing with the rooted 1.4.2 stock NT, I see no reason to move to CM yet on it (BT is the only thing missing on stock), even though I have CM7/CM9 on dual boot SD. After CM gets more stable on the NT, maybe.

Old age
Gentlemen,
Thanks for the replies. I don't feel old most of the time, just when I have some of the youngsters whizzing past me. Computers, smart cell phones, and Nooks are fairly new to me, never touched one until after my wife passed a year and a half ago. Now I need one to keep in touch with my family (4 kids, 12 grandkids(and 3 more on the way), and 4 greatgrand kids (and 2 more coming).
Due to a accident last fall the old brain sometimes has a bit of a hard time comprehending things now and then, so I get a bit frustrated and I may ask questions that seem to be a repeat. Hope you all can forgive that.
Thanks!
The tablet my grandsons gave me is a Lenovo A1 not a Nook tablet. It is running Android 2.3 and I want to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich when I'm confident enough in my abilities.
Well done, gentlemen.
These two will have you building your own Android OS before you're done, GrampaBear.

You might want to check out these for information on the Lenovo Ideapad A1:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355319
There's very little activity for this device on xdadevelopers, and what we know is primarily for the Nook Color.
Well, I started the process of making an SD card with Android on it. I am now thoroughly convinced I am near as dumb as a box of rocks. I download the agnostic sd card image and the win32imager. I didn't realise I needed to uncompress the files ( this was a first for me, never had to do it before ). I finally figured out I needed WinZip and I downloaded the trial version and ran the program. I took a old Kingston 4 GB class4 micro sd card (I have ordered a Sandisk from newegg but didn't want to wait to try) and formatted it to fat32 with a sd formatting program. I then ran Winimage (with my fingers crossed for I was not sure of what I was doing) and I think I have the image on the sd card, at least when I look at the card it windows it says boot on the sd icon. I went to the site where the C7 images are kept, but could not get one to download ( this was around 11 pm last night ). One problem I have is that I have no idea what I'm looking for when I pick a file. Could you tell me which one I should be using? It says I should write the image to the card, put the card in the nook and boot it. OK! I'll give that a shot, but how exactly do I get the Nook to boot off the sd card and how exactly does the Nook know what to do with the program? Will this mess up the Nook and the programs on it?
I knew that this would be a project, but after 12 hours of reading and trying I've become a bit frustrated. Maybe someone would take on a project and write a forum called The Big Dummy's Guide to Installing CM7 to a SD card and do a step by step instruction that tells us dummys what we should be seeing as we do this.
Funny you should ask about the dummies guide to SD installs. Taosaur just gave me a link to his here:
http://taosaur.blogspot.com/2011/09/running-cyanogenmod-7-from-sd-nook.html
He gives links for the CM7 files. Pick the CM 7.2 RC3.
Once you get the SD set up right and the CM zip on it, just put in your nook and boot. Everything is automatic and does not harm your stock install at all.

Thanks for answering my post. Looks like I'll be starting all over with the process again later this evening. You must have been doing this work for quite a while with the knowledge you have.
Well, for now I'm taking my 6 1/2 year old great-granddaughter, a couple of fishin poles, a can of worms, and we're walking down to the pond to catch us some bluegills for dinner. Need to have a little grandpa fun and let the ole brain relax for a bit.

1. It takes a while for the initial install, and you may see a black screen without any indication of activity. Don't panic! If it lasts more than 20 minutes or so, turn the Nook off, pull the sdcard out, and start again. Don't be afraid to redo everything.
2. The first time it successfully boots into Android, you will see the introductory splash screen for what seems an inordinately long time. It's setting up files and processes so just let it run. Once again, if it takes more that 20 minutes or so, there's most likely some problem.
2. The Kingston card may be sloooow, so my comment above is even more possible. Because the Kingston card is so slow, when you finally boot into Android on it, you may think that the system is too slow or error-prone to run on an sdcard. You may get popups during boot up, when you're running programs, or when its just sitting there, saying something to the effect that so and so program has a problem or had a fault or whatever, and asking you to wait or "force close" (FC). This is probably caused by the card. Your Sandisk card will generally not have those problems (I've been running for over a year on an 8gb Sandisk card with no problems and very snappy response).
Thank you
Shumash,
Thank you for the information. I tried my first try at making a card tonight, it appears to be a no go. Left the Nook alone for an hour and 15 minutes with nothing apparently happening. I will reformat the card and try again tomorrow. I want to thank all who have written to help me along. I know what a pain in the kester having to work with absolute beginners can be.

I see you used winimage to burn. Do not use 'write disk' to burn it. Use 'Restore Virtual Disk Image to physical drive' in the same menu. That's why I recommended win32diskimager. It is simpler to use for noobs.

Shumash,
I did use win32diskimager but I apparently did something wrongin the process. I will try again tomorrow it's late and I'm a bit tired. One thing that I will be doing also is trying to learn as much about Android as I can, though it may need to be in a bit simplified format. If anyone can suggest available information this old geezer will appreciate any guides to it.
I finally did it!
It took me 6 trys and I'm not sure what I did right this time, but I finally had success. The first 5 trys all I would get on the screen were 3 lines going across the screen about 40% of the way up and nothing else. The last time it booted and took a bit of time probably 12 - 15 minutes working and then shut itself down. I was thinking it was another failure and held the power button down for a few seconds to restart and Bingo! up came the Android window. I messed around a bit and set up the wireless and pulled up the internet. I LIKE IT!!
It is a bit slow and I'm assuming the Sandisk card will fix that when it finally arrives. It didn't freeze up or anything just ran a bit slow. The Lenovo A1 that my grandsons gave me is always locking up.
The only other thing that I have a worry about is the micro sd card reader in the Nook. I did have a pretty hard time getting the card in and out of the reader slot. I've labored with my hands all of my life and I have developed rather thick and calloused fingers and a bit of arthritis doesn't help either. I can not physically fit the tip of my finger into the little open loop area for the SD card reader. I had to use a tweezer from my fly tying kit to insert and remove the card from the Nook. After I get this type of card down pat I'd like to see if there is a way to leave the card in all of the time and be able to boot from the card or the nook reader software.
THANKS AGAIN! I wouldn't have succeeded without all of you gentlemens help.
While I was finishing typing this message my 13 year old grandson has been fooling around with the Android on the Nook. He said to tell you, that you all are AWESOME!

If you're using windiskimager, getting everything straight can be a bit confusing. Make sure that you're doing the following four steps on your PC, not the Nook!
1. To the right of the box that says "Image File", there is a blue folder picture. Click on it and select the image file. It should be something like "generic-sdcard.img". It's easiest if the image file is in the same directory/folder as the win32diskimager software.
2. To the right of the blue folder looking picture is the selection box for the location where this image will be written. It says "Device" right above it. If it is the wrong drive letter, click on the arrow at the right of the box. Select the letter of the sdcard. Use a file manager or windows explorer to find out which drive letter the sdcard is. Make absolutely sure you know which drive it is!
3. After you have properly selected the image file and the correct drive letter, click "write" and wait for it to complete.
4. After the image has been written, you will have to put the CM7 (Gingerbread) or CM9 (ICS) flashable zip on the sdcard in its root directory (called "/boot" in a file manager or windows explorer). Copy the one you want onto the sdcard.
Once the above is done, remove the sdcard from the PC and put it in your Nook. Boot the Nook up, and it will do everything else automatically.

It's funny you should mention old hands and micro chips. I have always had a hard time with the chip and that darned slot. Yesterday I was changing the chip and it popped out. I was sitting in my big recliner, you know the kind all old folks have, LOL. Anyway, the chip went down the crack in the chair. I could not find it. I finally turned the chair on it's side and shook it. It came tumbling out. LOL.
So you will be glad to hear there is a way to set up your stock so that you can use the same SDcard. The only complication is your stock must be rooted first. But that is simple to do. But maybe you want wait on that till you are more confident. Once it is rooted you can look at my tips thread, item B3, and I tell you how to set up stock to use the same SD so you don't have to keep changing cards. There is another method of setting it up without rooting first, but it is more complex to do. If you want me to reference that thread, let me know.
Leapinlar,
I know what you mean about the old folks and recliner thing. I have a big old style chair with a foot stool that my wife bought me at a garage sale 38 years ago. It was well over 20 years old when she bought it. She re-upholstered it and made it into the most comfortable chair for a large man ever. I'm kinda like Archie Bunker with that chair, it's my chair and you don't sit in it unless I offer it to you.
I appreciate all the help you all have given me, this is all new to me and sometimes I get to feeling a bit flumoxed. I'm having a bit of a problem getting the Android gapps program to work at the moment. Think I may be copying it to the wrong spot, but Windows only seems to show me one spot to copy to. I'll get it figured out it'll just take time. It may be a bit before I feel brave enough to root the Nook.
Still waiting for the Sandisk card to arrive. The Kingston card seems to work but is really slow at times.
You're copying it right. As you turn the nook on with the card in the slot, hold down the n key and choose to boot into the SD recovery partition.

It's over my head... Android 4 and dualboot? HD2/Leo

Hi guys,
Hardware I understand a bit, hence me salvaging an HD2 from work (mine with broken screen + a waterdamaged one = working one after some hours work, I got to keep it when leaving the company ).
But now I want to replace WM6.5 with Android.
I just came across a link that talked about dual booting.
But I am in WAY over my head here. Half the terms in that link mean nothing to me (cLK NAND vs. Magldr NAND? what's nativeSD? what's EXT4?)
On average I read at least an hour a day on all kinds of subjects (electronics, cars/motorcycles, engines, networks, politics, construction, legal stuff, etc.), so I really DO try, but I simply cannot hack it to understand it all to a level where I get to play with the big boys... And in many cases not even with the medium boys (like in here...)
I have spend a few hours already on here reading up on Android, but don't even know for sure if I have read the most recent threads (one thing I remember is that the camera is still not working, there must be versions where this is fixed?)
So, now that I have felt sorry for myself long enough, here's some questions:
Can I indeed dual boot and keep the original operating system intact?
Will speed/free-memory/etc suffer? (One of my biggest gripes right now is the lack of free space in internal memory even though I try to put everything on the SD card which has plenty of space left)
Would this be a good dummy guide?
Any other links that explain it all for 10 year olds would be nice too... Then I can direct my 9 year old to read up on it on there instead of asking her dad...
PS: I know this might come off as a 'I don't feel like searching and want everything handed on a silver platter', but I hope I made it clear I do spend loads of time trying to figure it out myself, but sometimes that just doesn't work...
You say that you've really searched a lot and I believe you seeing as you've put so much detail in your post, but I still think the answers are readily available in simple terms.
If you want to dual boot, then it literally couldn't be simpler. If you have a TMOUS phone then just download an SD ROM from the SD Development forum, place the 'Android' folder on the root of your SD card (i.e. it should literally be /Android), run CLRCAD then HARET and you've got Android running. If it's an EU phone, check the radio version. If it's above 2.08.50 then you're good to go. If not, then find the latest official stock ROM for your phone (should be 3.14.something) and flash it (you could flash a radio separately but I guess you want a very easy way). Then just repeat the above steps about the SD ROM, CLRCAD and HARET.
If you want NAND Android (which is faster and has better battery life but you'll get rid of WinMo completely [IMO a huge positive ]) then follow this guide. It's incredibly simple, and you can try using the HD2 Toolkit (search for it) to help. Good luck
THANKS
There you do it again, using all kinds of terms that don't mean a thing to me
But I think I've gotten enough to go on, THANKS FOR YOUR ANSWER. And I haven't stopped reading in the meantime, so I am a wiser man than when posting my thread. But still bloody ignorant
I will try to post back here if succesful. Although I know full well, that once it works, I tend to forget all the troubles of getting there, hence might also forget reporting back...
As for ditching WiMo completely: yes please, but for now I am way too much of a chicken to do so. Maybe after several succesful working Android tries...
As for better speed: it has annoyed me from the beginning that the startupscreen has a stutter in it... During the writing of 'quietly brilliant" the sound stutters
My phone (just for extra info)
5.2.21869 (21869.5.0.82)
Manila 2.5.19211619.0
ROM 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD from 14th of Jan 2010
Radioversion 2.07.51.22_2
Protocol 15.322.50.07U
Wait, have you successfully booted SD Android? Because technically I don't think you should be able to. The first thing you should do before attempting anything is to read this handy guide from T-Macgnolia (don't forget to thank him) which explains everything for noobs. Once you've done that, try reading the guide I posted earlier (the same one is in my signature too).
you need atleast radio 2.08 to run android ... flash radio 2.15 you don't need full ROM flash...so nothing changes from your wm set up..
Then put any sd android build on your sd card by extracting the files.. click clrad ( nothing happens).. then click haret.. you will boot into android... try gingerbread versions first.. enjoy
Then once you are adventurous... install a native sd Rom... faster than nand builds if you have a nice sd card

You guys feel so at home with the terms being thrown around that you probably cannot imagine how hard it is for a noob to find his way. I've just spend a few hours (after not being on here for days) trying to find a good explanation about how to change the radio to 2.15 and have finally come across a working link with the latest radio-file. But I think I first have to install some boot-loading kinda program (hspl) before it will accept the 2.15 file still to be renamed to leoimg.nbh
I've quickly read through this thread with explanations, but it's like reading a paper on nuclear fusion. I see the words, but they don't mean much and therefor don't stick or make sense. As soon as you learn a little more, you have to reread it and what first was Russian to you (or Chinese for the Russians amongst us) now makes a little more sense.
Getting to see the big picture just takes reading, looking at other threads, rereading, etc.
No worries, I'll get there, but it is very time consuming. *runs off to see if he still has a 1 or 2GB uSD card since trying to sell them all off when getting a batch of 8GB for our phones and Nintendo DS's*.
I'm considering getting a 64GB class 10, but lets get it to work first, then we'll cross that bridge...
Thanks so far, as said I should be able to work it out and will, eventually :fingers-crossed:, report back.
You may need to check if 64GB cards actually work. I've read mixed things about them, some saying they work perfectly fine whilst others say it needs to be repartitioned or something. Can't remember where these are from so I can't post any links, sorry.
Thanks. So far I've only read reports that they DO work on the HD2. But having one can never hurt, there's enough other stuff we have that I can try it in (SLR camera, tablets, USB-uSD-reader (which makes it a 64GB stick), etc.)
If the difference between SDHC and SDXC is indeed basically only one extra pin with no other drawbacks than not being able to use its maximum speed, then there should hopefully be at least one working application for it

Yeah I don't see why it shouldn't work. I thought that the only difference was that SDXCs were higher capacity lol, I'm sure Google has the answers.
I understand your problem..... the hd2 has had great development and umpteen number of roms... you need to read.. the more you read the better you become...i have been tinkering with my hd2 for almost three years now.... happy flashing

dont feel bad my friend ...i was in your place just a few months ago now i am a flash addict..the first time i did it i was sure my phone would never work again . i am now runing dual boot ICS on nand and native sd JB. IMO i would think about using a ICS rom first it is pretty stable since ppl have had lots of time to refine it i use the Nexus HD2 ICS 4.0.4 Nativesd rom works great !!then after u get used to using it u could try others out !!
good luck!

So I know what to expect
Right now I am puzzled by MAGLDR.
Of course I am not listening to your good advice of starting with an old Android and want to skip to the Nexus version immediately. (Not this one as it only has a native SD version)
MAGLDR should allow me to use a different directory than the standard /ANDROID, but it also warns it will wipe out my ROM... So not running that until I read up on it some more.
BTW I tried running clrcad and haret manually from this Nexus version, but it rebooted into WM6.5, so I'm missing something... (Put it on an empty SD card in a NexusHD folder, which in turn consists of an ICS folder and a file called SD_boot. I did not do anything with the SD_BOOT file, should that have been in the root???)
As said, I'll get there... If the phone doesn't take flying lessons into the brick wall before that... (don't worry, not nearly there yet.:good
(EDIT: I tried rerunning CLRCAD and HARET, but this time it won't run it (no signed certificate or it is missing something), and it added a small file in the root called EndFilt.log.)
The correct process for running SD Android is to have the folder containing CLRCAD and HARET on the root of the SD card, i.e. when you run CLRCAD the path should be /Android/CLRCAD (if your folder is called 'Android', that is). Also, the NexusHD2 JB ROM that you linked has NativeSD, NAND and NAND/EXT versions, so I don't see why you think it's only NativeSD.
Thanks! Am trying Froyo now (MccM DS V4.0 FroyoStone Sense). Issue with certificate persists, so how can I run clrcad again? Tried the red button, but it keeps whining the certificate isn't signed or components are missing.
(Found this, will continue reading tomorrow...)

I meant only NativeSD (and whatever other non-SD options) as opposed to purely SD, which is what I was looking for.
Success!!! Froyo up and running.
I did need to do this:
Frome here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858348
Following simple steps:
1) Download following file: http://www.internet-tools.co.uk/blog...sda_unlock.zip
From archive we need only SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe
It allows Registry to be edited from PC.
Run it with working Activesync connection
2) Download Mobile Registry Editor: http://www.zipsoft.ru/catalog/mobile...tor-v1_11.html
Also run with working Activesync connection
3) and modify the following keys to the values listed.
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","0000101b" ,"1 ")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","00001005" ,"4 0") (actually filled out "40", not "4 0" as that was not accepted)
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","0000101a" ,"1 ")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","00001001" ,"1 ")
("HKLM","Security\Policies\Policies","00001017" ,"2 4") (actually filled out "24", not "2 4" as that was not accepted)
It perfectly worked with HD2, but I guess it should work with all WM devices.
4) Restart
P.S. Special THANKS to JZ SmartMort

Ran clrcad and haret and it works. Next step is to transfer my simcard to start using it again.
I will miss my 7 yr old K300i with its standby time of about 10 days... (HD2 is company phone that I got to keep when contract ended)

Why do you live in Antarctica with no power source near by to charge your phone?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk 2
My wife has misplaced my charger, so we are stuck with one charger for two phones... (HTC HD2 and Galaxy S) When using the old phone, it is suddenly a non-issue.
Especially important as I went to sleep with 70% left on the HD2 and woke up (<6hours later) with a dead phone...
I *hope* it was due to my WIFI, the antenna-coaxial cable was unplugged, so I hope my WIFI and Bluetooth will work properly again now... (edit: theory being the WIFI wasn't turned on when using WM, hence normal battery life, but on Android I did turn it on, but only had reception when less than 3ft away from my router (which is deliberately placed on the top floor of our house, 20ft, a concrete and a wooden floor above our living room))
But I do have this issue: the screen is unstable, moves around, my alarms keep getting activated (edit: while the screen is shaking/vibrating, you see the alarm box being checked, unchecked, checked, etc), etc.
Anyone else have this issue? (This version software: Nexus CM9)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjpspNaZ1Sg
(Re-viewing the above, I wonder whether this is partly due to slowness (edit: of the entire system and class4-SDcard) so if it is a response of me tapping the screen sevaral times to get the keyboard to appear, I'll see if I can get another clip of its quirky behaviour. I can't find similar issues when searching for "moving" or "vibrating screen" under Android and HD2, but there must be better search-words???)
As you can tell by my sig I'm on the same ROM and no, I've never had issues like that.
Just a quick update on using it for a couple of months:
Quite often it is very slow in responding (use the ON button 3 times before I can get 'control' over my phone).
Running stuff from it is very slow too (have a 8GB class4 card, plan to buy a 64GB class10 card to see if that fixes something).
Poweruseage is definately higher than on Windows, even when not using all the extra free games I couldn't run when still on WM6.5 The first half of the battery-symbol it seems to be very frugal, but it will easily drain the second half of the battery overnight. It will simply never last much more than a day, where WM could last 2 on rare occasions.
And I am not quite sure the high-speed charging is working, as it seems to take a lot longer to charge. But I have not found the Android equivalent of "Spooncharge" yet.
And then there's the malfunctioning of the screen sometimes. It is as if it is getting a signal as if I am touching it. It could be due to me repairing the screen, but I have used it on WM for quite a while after the repair, but it never behaved like this.
But despite of it all, I'm not going back
SIM-card trouble ICS on SD card after del an app
Android is not recognizing the SIM card (or something), but WM6.5 has no issues.
It's been so long that I forgot all steps I took to get here (here = a running version of ICS without an EXT4 partition on the SD in my HD2).
I did copy all files from my laptop ICS folder to the ICS folder on the SD card in the phone, but this did not solve anything.
Any time I restart android from the ICS folder, I get into the locked screen of Android, with the line that I can only call emergency numbers, I unlock it, feed it the SIM-password but end up (after several minutes) at the same startup-screen with the same "only emergency numbers" remark. Sometimes it will prompt me to reboot the phone (it will then go to WM, and when I start Android from the ICS folder, it all starts over).
Signs that something was going wrong: Angry Birds would hang. I was going to uninstall it and came across another app I wanted to remove. I uninstalled it through the App's tab in Android, and Android never functioned properly since.
Any clues?
