I posted this in the Nexus one forum since this is the phone i use but have not gotten any responses in over a week. This might be the more appropriate section of the forum.
My gallery pictures have been disappearing by chunks at a time. A few months back i lost maybe 100 pictures. Starting at around 700, noticed some missing and was at 600ish. Today im down to 120's. I do not believe this is my SD card crapping out because i often use it for large files and they are fine, its an 8bg San Disk C6. Also the card is maybe 1 year old.
Has anyone else had any pictures disappearing? My most recent photo in my gallery is now dated at 7/8/2010. There were photos on here from 2008 when i got my old Fuze.
I had a buddy that went through like 5 Moto Droids and 6 SD cards because they were losing pictures of his newborn daughter. He wasn't too tech savvy so he just insisted android sucked and is now using a Rumor or something
So I've heard of stuff like this happening before, but I never found out what the solution was. Sorry.
Really, interesting, thanks for the reply i appreciate it. I was about to buy a new 8gb SD card just in case. I have not lost any pictures in the last maybe 2 weeks, its very random it seems. The only thing i do that is hard on my SD card is occasionally, a few times a week load like 4+ GB of files on and off a few times. Taking my work home with me and back to work. But i didnt think this should have any impact.
No one else?
I lost 100+ pictures and 10 videos on my EVO. It happened out if no where because it wasn't long before that I was looking at them. After a reboot, I remember that I tried to access the photos but none of the pictures or videos where there. I basically lost a lot of photos with very little warning, so I keep backing them up now. I still remember the gallery app going from 197 to 14 in the camera shots. This is the same 16 gig microsd card that I had on my Touch Pro 2, and I never had that problem.
I thought the sd card wasn't mounting, but I used Astro File manager and could explore everything without any issues.
I still have no idea what the cause was... Switching kernels, ROMs, radios, and factory resetting hasn't made the issue come back again, so who knows what the cause was.
Is this an issue related to rooting your phone?
I just noticed I lost about 12+ pictures and about 5 videos from my G2 after I just recently rooted my phone.
I double-checked with some file managers, connecting the phone via USB Mass Storage and the photos and videos just disappeared!!!
Can ANYONE help diagnose what's going on here?

I recently updated my PRL (about 15 minutes ago), along with my profile under Settings -> System Updates, and immediately noticed something wrong when I tried to change my wallpaper and my phone taking forever to load them up. My Evo did load up about 20 pictures, but previously I had over 200 photos all together from various folders within the sd card. I went into Astro (as it loads my sd contents faster), but my files were still mysteriously missing. I then mounted my phone and went into my sd card, and sure enough, all my media-minus the 20 photos that were previously loaded- were erased right after the PRL. All movies, videos, and pictures have been erased (luckily, my music was untouched). What the hell happened? I've only had the phone for 5 days, and I have unrEVOked installed on the phone. Other than that, I have not hacked it (yet). Is anyone else having this problem, and is there any way to get that media back?
I hope this gets fixed because I came from a Nexus One to this phone, and the problems in this phone have been slowly mounting to the point where I've sorely regretted the trade-in
I knew something was up with a prl ending in 666....

I knew someone was gonna chime in on this one lol.
Thats odd man, I don't see how updating the PRL would even effect any part of the sd card.

Whoa, never noticed that. I checked to see if anyone else might've had this problem, and the only other guy is here: http://androidforums.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=992213
Sigh, I'm not sure what to do, I'm sure there's no way to restore the data anyways, so I'll probably fume at Sprint for a while.
My wife has a UK stock unbranded S, updated to GB via Kies. Things have generally been ok for the couple of months she's had the phone, but I think there's a pattern forming of wibbles after she's record a video.
On Froyo, shortly after recording a video the phone rebooted leaving both internal and external SD cards corrupted with stuff in lost.dir. Videos and most photos gone.
On GB, shortly after recorded videos the phone stuck with black screen (wouldn't wake up). Had to pull battery to reboot. Videos gone (but nothing in lost.dir this time).
I initially though it might be down to the external SD card, but the last occurence was using the internal for storage.
There were probobaly other similar glitches she didn't bother to 'report'. All seem to be shortly after/during taking videos. Photos seem to be ok though.
Does this sound like a hardware fault? I can't see anything similar in the forums so I'm assuming so?

This weekend I attended a school play for one of my kids. Since it was the first weekend with the phone we took lots of pictures. Once we got home though none of the pictures were retrievable. They all had a blank grey photo screen with a ! at the button. I tried to get at it with my PC but same results. Now I got a pissed off spouse and no answers to how this would of happened. Also it was not on a MicroSD. (one is on the way). All data was saved on the device's memory.
If anyone has a trick of a fix for this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried powering the phone off for a minute then power it back up in recovery and delete the cache
Have you tried opening them up with a different program like ES explorer or disk digger

Also after the reboot try the camera out again. does it's save any new photos that you tried to take?
I had the same issue. I took a bunch of family photos then had some lag, freezes and then a Corrupt Card message! I pulled the card and was able to save it on my win 10 pc with the sd adapter. It was the kingston 64 gb from the costco bundle. I bought a samsung pro +128 from bestbuy($89) and hope I never have this issue again.
I've taken a picture and had it just not save, but nothing like that corrupted grey screen you got.
Also I know you weren't using an SD card but when you get it I would highly recommend that you keep save to device on and transfer to your card later as needed. I found that the camera app stutters hard when opening or when saving a picture if it's straight to the card. I have a top class Sandisk 128gb card but still use the transfer method because I love the speed of the camera. Not quite as fast as last year's but 1.8 seconds from double click of the home to saving a picture is about on par with the 1.5 seconds of the s6/edge/edge+/note5.
Same crap
I have the same issues. But it does random photos. I have had the phone since the 2nd with tmobile. Since then I have taken aproximately 50 photos. Over the last 4 days they all have slowly changed to that grey crap thing and the pics are gone. WTF samsung........... I added a sd card today, even though its set to, it still dont put any photos on the card. And I still lose them to this crap glitch. Begining to really hate this phone beyond measure.
Corrupt file
I have a 128gb sd card, using the Verizon model. I took a pic and noticed it not saving to sd cards dcim. So I reboot and it to says my sd card is corrupted in storage. I just popped it in my laptop and deleted the last photo in dcim folder. It seems okay again and didn't have to format again. I hope this doesn't happen often.
I'm having the same problem with my new S7, it's July 1st, 2017 and last week all photos from about Monday onward started not showing up and just have this gray !
I took a photo again today and I looked at it and it looked fine and now I can't retrieve it. Is there any fix for this problem? I've tried reindexing, reboot 5 times, shutting down complete.
Same problem here
I am facing the same problem. Did you find solutions? If so please help me too
Ive actually been surprised at how I haven't needed to fuss at all with storing photos. It prompted me once to store on the sd and thats what its done with every photo.
My first thought would be the sdcard. I was lucky to find a high speed 128 gb Samsung in the clearance section ($20)
Test another sdcard. Im pretty sure its not a software issue.
This issue is not exclusive to the Note 4 and looking around the internet this is an existing yet unsolved issue on certain Samsung devices.
My mom's Note 4 has a recurring issue where pictures just flat out disappears (Pictures, videos, screenshots). No traces of it in any folders even with a different file browser. Issue happens again and again with no pattern or known cause.
2 months ago-ish (can't remember exact date) I told her to buy an SD card for it this time so if it did happen again, I have full access to the storage medium. I then set the camera to save to the SD card and let her use it as usual. Guess what, the problem happened again today. Only 8 pictures left in DCIM folder.
This time I took the SD card and popped it into my PC and ran Recuva recovery. I was able to recover a few intact pictures and videos that disappeared, some taken just hours ago.
Now I know that media can be recovered from the SD card easily I can now follow this phenomenon scientifically. I gave back the phone to my mom and told her to copy her pictures and videos to her laptop frequently.
I don't think this is a storage media issue since the same problem occurs even when using the phone's internal storage. She hasn't complained about loosing any game progress from any of her games.
I will keep posting on this thread for any updates.
Feel free to post below if you encounter the same issue, plus some other technical info.
Note 4 SM-N910C (Exynos 5 Octa)
Android 6.0.1, Unrooted
Kernel 3.10.9
Factory ROM, of course.
Sync issues?
Could the pictures be sync-ing to some cloud like Google Photos (or something else), and maybe there's a setting that deletes photos/videos after they have been sync-ed. I would start by checking settings-->accounts. Look for what is sync-ing where.
In any case, keep us posted.
Happened again. Older pictures and videos disappeared while the slightly newer ones were untouched. Still unknown cause.
So screw it. I gave the Note a factory reset.
UPDATE:
Happened AGAIN! Still unknown cause. Already did a factory reset previously.
No Google sync for photos, no Dropbox, nothing.
Hi, I've have my VS995 for a while and it's been running perfectly. I'm currently rooted, running Alpha Rom (1BA revision) and the mk2000 BTTF Beta 1 kernel. In the last month or so I've noticed anything that has to hit storage -- either internal OR SD-- is starting to get really slow to get started. For example, if I am opening the camera, it takes a while (5-10 seconds) to open because it's reading the gallery.. if I am reading through Twitter and saving some pictures, sometimes it takes so long to save it crashes my Twitter client! But then once I get a successful save, everything is fine for a while -- but if I stop using it, it goes back to sleep. I.e., once storage is being accessed, it seems fine for a while-- if I start skimming through the gallery, open the camera back to back, save a group of files-- everything is fine. But if I let it sit for a minute or so, I'm back to super slow access times. It's almost like waiting for a spinning disk hard drive to spin back up after being asleep. Because of that I'm thinking it's not likely to be a hardware fault, just a setting or something is messed up.
Can someone point me to where to even start troubleshooting this? Since it happens on internal storage too I don't think it's anything with my SD card. Is this likely something in the kernel or the ROM itself? Could it be like a setting in the kernel? I've tried all of the different IO Schedulers with very little difference...
Thanks!
SD-Card going bad?
If it is a SanDisk, that would be my bet. I have had so many problems with SanDisk Media on many different devices and computers I gave up on SanDisk...
Yeah, I've had tons of trouble with Sandisk (and avoid them entirely, they're the only brand that's ever flat out died on me-- and multiple times!) but this seems to be impacting ANY storage access, not just the SD card... I guess I could try it with the card out entirely just to see what happens... (it's a Samsung 128gb EVO-- I almost always go with their Pro cards for phones but I bought this when Pro disappeared for a few months)
