Build quality is superb, video is amazing, I feel like my evo will disintegrate within 6months.. I never had ATT but i'm sure I will hate them but I'm not much of a talker or texter.. I just like to browse the net on my phone, upload some videos on facebook/youtube,listen to my music and play a few games..
i feel my evo is consuming my life with all these new roms and such, I have very little self control, instead of focusing on school work im obsessing over the next new hack for my 002 novatec, or when I can upgrade to an 003,.. I think I need to dumb it down and get an iphone lol
Disintegrate?
Does the Evo really feel that cheap in your hands?
And, for goodness sake, glass on the BACK of the phone? Yikes.
Go get the iPhone then, no one is going to stop you but yourself. To me it sounds more like your into the most popular phone atm then anything else.

I really don't get a cheap feel with the Evo ... design / material / quality wise.
Just because the iPhone has glass (OMGhana) all these people seem to think that it's all high end. Maybe I don't want glass. Maybe I have too much glass in my life. Christ. I digress. It's all a matter of what best suits the user.

The EVO's front is amazing. But I have to say, the back could have been improved upon, no offense. I'm an HD2 owner, and I'm sure you can understand why I say what I say.

well its the screen separation (screen is sinking! barely push against it and it sinks in itself, affects accurate touch operations) and the flimsy backcover that makes a squeeky noise now when I hold it, the kickstand as well is making a noise, wheres the WD-40! sorry I didn't clarify this.
Yeah I can agree on that, not a big fan of the camera sticking out. Nothing a case can't fix though.

The monthly bill will be a lot more then what you pay now (unless you can get a good discount). Don't forget that AT&T got rid of their Unlimited plan so....I hope you can keep it under 2 gigabytes or you will have to pay a fee.
Either way...your best bet is to do your own evaluation with them and their network. To each his own, but I wouldn't go back!
Truth be told there are things about the Evo that I don't necessarily "love." The shape of the back case, which I know is what it is for a reason.
In terms of the iPhone ... I'll admit to liking the newer design in terms of it being more "Squared" and flatter. Didn't like the rounder previous iPhone's, which is something I sort of see with the Evo but since it's a bit "thicker" it works. But it's still a sharp looking device, for whatever that's worth. Not to suggest the Evo isn't.
Held the iPhone 4, and yes, it does have that "feel and look" but it didn't necessarily sit in my hands, landscape mode (as that's how I'm usually holding the phone), as comfortably as my Evo did. I like the little bit of heft and size you get with the EVO, in the end it just felt more comfortable.
The new iPhone does look cooler than last generations ... but it's still a got damn iPhone.

My neighbor let me play with her iPhone for a little bit and imo, I hated the feel of it in my hand. I was more of a fan of the rounded back. The phone was fast but nothing that made me feel amazed. Overall I didn't feel like it was a worthy upgrade over the 3gs, but again I'm not a big Apple fan. For those that like/love the iPhone/Apple I'm sure you like it though.

The things that keep me from getting an iphone again are:
No flash, I love watching flash on fail blog or assorted sites
No .wmv player. One off my favorite sites puts up their videos in that format
No widgets. Going in and out if programs for basic info gets old.
Small screen. After the evo I don't think I can go under 4 inches.
Email attachments are handled fairly ****ty on the iphone especially if the device doesn't recognize them. I can download anything through the gmail.com site.
Notifications suck on the iphone. Not a total deal breaker for me but still on the list.
No swype.
I don't get it with people. It's like they have to come in and justify why they buy or not buy a phone. Do you do the same with your car, home, clothes?
Do you tell your friends I am buying a Honda now that my Ford's build quality isn't what I like. No offense to Ford owners
The Iphone's build quality is not all that - i think you have read some of the reviews. It's slick I will give them that. But once you put a case on it how does it feel now?
There are already signs of them getting scratched up. Once you put a thicker case on it guess what? It's not a sleek and small as you once thought it was. No different from the EVO. I put on my case and I see all screen.
You put on the bumpers to the Iphone 4 and you see all screen.
I don't care what phone anyone gets. I don't get into the fanboy fight either way. I like what I like and I buy it. Android happens to be my OS of choice and the EVO my phone. Windows Phone 7 will be my next phone as well. If the Iphone came in a 4" or larger screen I would have considered it. BUT...this forum and these developers and people are the real reason so many of us are into these phones the way we are.
I am sure the HD3 will be pretty slick. I can almost guarantee you that if the design concepts comes close to the real deal that it will be amazing.
Just so you guys know Ive read quite a few posts complaining about light leaking on the iphone 4 aswell. If thats what causes your gripes on building quality you may be disappointed with the iphone as well.
On top of that the iphone shatters when dropped from little over a foot. My evo has already survived a nastier one from waste height.

I have minor screen separation that I only noticed when I saw a mention of it while floating around. Yes, I admit the screen is coming up on mine. Lower left, gives a little bit of light leakage. But no one would notice it unless I pointed it out to them. Or they're already aware of the issue and they looked to see ... I don't really see the sinking thing. I feel like the screen seems pretty solid actually. Does this have anything to do with the folks talking about different displays or whatever? I dunno ... cause I definitely don't feel like my screen "sinks" when I man handle it.
I don't get a squeaky noise ... is this a sweaty hands to surface squeak?
My kick stand doesn't make a noise ... but it does get warm when I'm maxing my phone out .... as far as a noise I cannot honestly say I've heard this.
Remember to hold the iPhone 4 correctly.
With your fingertips.
I blame my ISP.
Sorry for the double post.

I totally get what you are saying. I almost felt that holding the phone vertically felt alright ... but sitting horizontally I wasn't entirely feeling it.
Although I should admit that there are some other phones out there that are entirely MORE uncomfortable. It's a matter of preference, I know, and even with that a lot of folks throw cases and what not on. I do not, so that's something I would be forced to get used to. Not cool.
Especially if forced to rock a bumper ... I would cry.
Well ... here ya go - no squeaky kickstand issues;
And to think everyone was laughing at the kickstands .... it just makes sense.
Who laughs now!!1! Who laughs now!
Just wanted to know if this phone is an upgrade from the Captivate (prefer a former or current owner of both phones to chime in...)
I know the screen is not as pretty, and there are issues with the bootloader unlocking time will solve that I am sure =).
next month my contract is up so I am looking for a cappy replacement.
-D
I had it but there were just too many issues (you can search these threads as there have already been plenty of them pointed out) so I returned it. I am waiting for the summer phones to come out. If you don't care to have a custom kernel / full fledged ROM then it may be a good upgrade for you. I however would like a bit more control over my device
I jumped from the captivate to the atrix. I personally love it. Its gps among other things work out of the box.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I came from a captivate to the atrix and I like it. I flashed a new rom on my cally like every third day hoping to fix its issues. The atrix doesn't have any real roms yet but every thing already works great on the atrix so I'm content. I'd be happy if I got it to OC and enabled hsupa.

had cappy now atrix.
everything about teh atrix works better and faster.......even with atrix being stock VS my cap with custom rom/kernel and overclocked.
im annoyed that the bootloader is locked, but when it comes down to it, theres not a better phone on at&t at the moment.
My wife loves her Atrix, but she is new to android. I am going to keep my Atrix so long as I don't have any problems with this one. My first one would shut down on its own with 60% battery still.
Someone above mentioned returning theirs because of problems, but seriously I think its a select few with different problems. I dont see many people popping up with the same problem. Obviously do some research before buying it. If you enjoyed flashing roms on your captivate because you liked to tinker with it, then dont get this phone. If you only flashed roms because your phone didnt do what you wanted to, then I'd say give this phone a shot. I love the webtop and the car dock for this thing. The comment that made me want to keep mine was someone in a similar thread saying "2 cores and 1 gig of ram vs 1 core and 512 meg of ram..." eventually the software will be able to bring this thing beyond the captivate, and in the mean time it is running at least as good, if not better, than the captivate.
oh and for all the qHD complaints, I just took my screen protector off and the screen looks better and responds better now. I already have a parts teardown guide for this so hopefully if I need to replace the screen it wont be too difficult.
just my 3 or 4 cents
Yeah I am not too concerned about how locked down it is, as long as I can root it and install what I want I am happy with that (bootloader will be hacked in due time or openly unlocked by the MAN), my main concern was the screen quality, and if there were more or less functions than the cappy, Note: not that the captivate really fully functions as all of us gps users know.
However the cappy has such a nice screen and coming from a 3GS to the captivate even with its flaws was an upgrade.
I just want to make sure that going from the captivate if I sacrifice the higher contrast nicer color/responding touch screen to the Atrix's higher resolution but less fancy screen that its not going to be a deal breaker. In the end it comes down to function.
Thank you guys also for getting back to me your input is valuable.

I had the captivate before the atrix as well, and at first i was nervous because i read these forums sayin the screen quality was pretty bad on the atrix. However, maybe i'm blind or have different tastes but i find the screen to be much more natural. When i place the cappy next to the atrix, the cappy looks like it's trying to induce a seizure with all the poppin colors.
The only thing i don't like (probably easily fixable), is the stock keyboard. It seems the harder you press the less responsive the keyboard is. Instead of downloading a new keyboard (i will in due time) i just turned off the vibration and it seemed to help a bit.
I will not be giving up my cappy though, but it will not be my main phone. I will use it to flash the bajesus out of it, cause lets face it, that's a great hobby
The only thing I would add is that you will want a new launcher. The screen resolution makes the icons small. I bought ADW launcher EX as it allows for resizing icons. I do not miss my captivate - no lag and better email and calendar on Attic.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I will say if you sit the Atrix next to an iPhone 4 it makes the screen on the Atrix look 10 years old. Say what you want to defend that but it's the truth. The qHD screen doesn't even belong in the same league and I am by no means an Apple fanboy.
The phone was about 80% plastic, although it was very light to carry.
Now that is just my opinion and I would suggest you go look at one for yourself before making your decision.
Edit: Also there were a lot of small things that I didn't like, design wise. The ear piece speaker looked like it was just stuck on there quickly, wasn't aligned. Same with the camera hole, it was not aligned with the hole on the case, etc. You would never find these "flaws" or whatever you want to call them with a well designed piece of hardware. Overall it felt like a cheap built phone.

The AT&T store had a custom fitting screen protector that made the screen look like an old crt monitor. When I replaced my phone I didnt buy another screen protector and the display is pretty nice without it. I cant be sure that its more responsive without the screen protector as i have not put one on this specific phone, but its more responsive than the one I replaced.

Overcome owned a captivate and now own an Atrix. I loved my captivate and would probably still have it if it weren't for the battery life. It couldn't go longer than like 6 hours for me, the Atrix om the other hand has gone as long as 14h for me. I miss my captivates screen but ill trade that for battery life. And motoblur has been a non factor for me. But If you have a captivate and like it, I probably wousldnt get the Atrix.

See thats the thing, there are so many things wrong with the captivate including GPS and Battery and to be honest the reception is not all that great, and neither is the speaker, or speakerphone so I guess I have one of two choices get the Atrix or wait for the S2(and there is no guarantee Samsung will get their act together with that model either..)

i couldn't find a screen protector for mine
I'll chime in again. I said this on the forums for the cappy.
I would rather have a phone that works out of the box and is great than a phone that could have been great out of the box but was broken and required custom roms in order to make it just good.
The atrix has its issues, but compared to a captivate, it is solid and useable. I've given up my iphone 4 and my captivate for this phone and while it took some adjusting to daily routines, I am happy with the choice.

Coming from an XDAndroid (WinMo phone), to a Dream (G1), then to a Cappy, and finally to the Atrix- I must say I actually really like this device.
The email and calendar is actually really nice. It literally blows the captivate away. I am a business user, so exchange was a big one to me. The craptivate had really bad email and calendar support. The emails were plain text, non formatted, and replies were somewhat lame looking. The Atrix is legit in this field- it has HTML and RichText support. It parses HTML too so the emails come in properly. Very good plus. Also, the Blur sucked in my exchange info the first time and did it properly, which the captivate never did (always had to manually do it).
I went ahead and rooted and deodex'd, sideloading enabled, tether and webtop enabled. The webtop, I must say, is completely OVER RATED! I got it on there and was like, "wow glad I didnt drop $500 for that!". Even with as little support this phone has in the way of Dev (ATM), I must say I am really satisfied. I still have the cap to flash with if I want and I think the G/F is getting an inspire so that should hold off the itch...
The overall performance of the phone is very nice. It's snappy and I havent really found all that many bugs. The one thing I have noticed is occasionally the home screen will look like its in 16bit mode, but a touch of the home button it comes back to normal.

FWIW - One of the Atrix Reviews said the glass on the Atrix is Gorilla glass. If so, then no screen protector would be needed. Check the Corning website on gorilla glass - its is so tough that you can't scratch it with a coin or pen point.
Went from iPhone 4 -> Captivate -> Focus -> Nexus S -> Atrix. Atrix is my favorite so far. Just dont let all the nay sayers on the General Atrix section discourage you, 80% are trolls.

Although I admit the iPhone 4 screen is much nicer, the added size of the Atrix screen makes up for it in my opinion. I would rather have a SAMOLED over both of them, but I enjoy the Atrix more than my Nexus S and Captivate. I wouldnt call it 10 years old.

Im not sure about this either. my camera lines up perfectly as well as the speaker. While its not the iPhone 4 as far as beauty in build, i would put money on the Atrix being more durable. Its not two slates of glass, and with the gorilla glass its an added plus. On top of that the Digitizer isnt fused to the screen like the iPhone 4, so if you did crack it you dont have to spend $150ish for a new entire front assembly.

Just IMHO..
A guy I work with was showing me his new AT&T Galaxy 2. And it is a nice phone, a bit bigger then maybe I would go for, but still a nice phone.
So I pulled out my lowly Epic 4G running AKOP to show him an email App.
His jaw dropped, he went on and on about how nice it looks, and he couldn't get over the custom apps on the lock screen, or the smooth cube transition from homepage to homepage. It truly is something to behold what has been done to this phone. I have no desire to look for another. I think I made a convert that day
Other then TV-out this phone has everything.

"Thin" is SO overrated. Much like small size became 6-7 years ago. Thin phones are more likely to break in half in your pocket. Wait until you can get a flexible phone.

So the epic being the same weight as the evo 4g and a few motorola slates means what? I could buy your argument if you were trying to compare a ppc slider of old, but the epic is the lightest most functional slider out there and a replacement could be made with the same footprint and thinner with a larger screen, larger battery and the guts of a gs3. So why would I want a slate if I can get the added functionality a great keyboard provides?

your missing the point and you will not get the same weight nor the same depth as the GS3 with a keyboard not anywhere close to it.
Uber thanks for the laugh I had a rough day and you cheered me up.....
But I must agree with the OP.... My little epic is a beautiful little piece of hardware backed up by an awesome group of devs. I think this will be my phone upgrade or not until they come out with a true predecessor
And there is a 69 in my pic to but it was not intentional

You miss the point. Law of diminishing returns. How thin is thin enough? How thin is too thin to not feel good in the hand? I'll take something a little thicker with nice curves that cradles in my hand better than something that is ultra thin just because it can be. How light is light enough? A slider will always be a little thicker and a little heavier than a similar slate. The question is, at what size/weight is the trade off worth it to have the extra functionality/productivity of the keyboard. At the time, the evo was a squared off brick, the epic came in with a smaller footprint and lighter plus it had a keybosrd. But it was a little thicker. That was two generations ago. The droid 4 is pretty damn thin, and with some well used samsung plastic would be even lighter than it is. That's is an easy trade off for me over a gs3 or oneX.
Everyone in here has some love for a hard keyboard or why would they be in here? Then they seem to care more about what slab they'll get next. I prefer to hold off and keep lodging complaints/requests with sprint for a new slider. Then again, I held on to my i500 longer than most until I couldn't take not knowing who was texting me any longer. I just don't see how faster processors and bigger screens make me more productive than the keyboard, because so far they haven't outside having an extra icon row to play with on my photon which was easily negated because i needed the toggle widgets without the toggle inthe drop down menu.

Predecessor means what came before like the moment, successor is something that comes later, like the epic two. Not trying to be grammar police, but thought it may help. I definitely agree though.

Thank you for correction. I have four kids and worked 12 hour shift. I hope it was understood what I meant. Oh yeah and my day started with a special guest visiting my work to notify us that the new parent company that bought us in November and promised us that we will be open for years to come is shutting our doors in October. Been kinda rough day for me. So point is this is a rockass phone.

It would be nice if there was a successor like that. GS III with an unlocked bootloader, large 4.5" super AMOLED plus, quad-core Exynos and a 2K+ Mah battery with a 5-row QWERTY with an overall profile as thin or thinner than Droid 4 (salivating). Unfortunately, Samsung (or HTC or Moto) don't seem to think that KB is where it's at these days, and it is likely their market research supports their decision NOT to manufacture such a phone for the minority that would want it.
So I'm considering to buy the Note but there's one thing holding me back. I tried 3 show models and all had a little problem with the S-Pen. I noticed that they had little spots (every device had at least one and all in a different place, the diameter was around half a cm) which weren't accurate at all. The whole touchscreen was really accurate, but when I went over the spot, the line would just move randomly within the spot.
Is this a common issue? Or maybe in older devices or something?
Anyone any word on this?

Me either. Haven't seen it in the forum either.

I'm fairly certain that wasn't the problem when I tried it. I think I had my palm on the device but the device should ignore your palm in S-Note right? Also the spot was consistent as far as I'm concerned. But maybe it's a fault with the first batch or something. I plan on using it for drawing so a problem like this would be pretty major to me.

Don't buy the Note 10.1. It's disappointing in many levels. The S-Pen a total disappointment.
Oh yeah, I'm gonna return it tomorrow.
Best tablet I have ever had.
S pen is fantastic.
I was not sure when first looked in the shop. For me s note looked a bit toy town.
Then I installed lecturenotes and never looked back.
All my meeting notes are on the note 10.1 now.
Really happy.

The Note is fantastic and so is the Spen. I don't like Snote and prefer Lecture Notes used with Spen and/or 7 Notes with mazec.

I'm also considering getting a Note 10.1, but I don't want to make a new thread. Any college students have one? I've got a Galaxy Note right now, so I'm familiar with the S Pen and I know it's improved in the 10.1. My question is what does everyone use it for? And will it be useful in the classroom?

I use it for college, particularly taking notes in class, working out math problems, and making lists of things.. its also helped me improve my drawing aa bit.
My brother hhas also been working with autocad recently and he sends me designs in 3d which i can then open up and look at on my tabby..
I use it to do all my surfing nowadays, i watch my netflix on it, i play chess with friends on it, nova 3 (with ps3 controller soon ), n64 emulator, i used it to film a concert, the gps is mindblowingly good and has saved me a couple of times, i use the remote control function of it... i could go on and on.
Im very satisfied, except slightly with the sensitivity issue near the edges mentioned on another thread and with the lack of ports and accessories.
If those are deal breakers for you, move on
Edit: oh and to elaborate on the sensitivity thing, everything works fine except one of the sides has a line about one centimeter off the bezel, maybe 2 millimeters wide where the dot on the screen seems to go slightly faster tthan the pen itself.. this makes things distorts slightly when im working near that edge.. nothing terribly noticable, its like working near the center of a thick book, where its kinda hard to write neatly.

fenjen (the OP) is right. At least a batch of note 10.1 have that issue, mine included. :crying: And it's also rather pronounced. It shows up drawing lines slowly and applying low pressure. With higher pressure and drawing faster, it virtually disappears. You can clearly see it in the twoscreenshots I have attached.
It is a bit annoying, and I am considering returning my note to samsung for a replacement, but in the end I probably won't, because I prefer living with the issue rather than having to deal with the painful samsung aftermarket assistance.
I just left the Verizon store in Sugar Land, they have Hands-On units to play with if you guys are interested.
What's your hands-on review?
I thought about going in to check one out. Then I decided not to torture myself like that. I gave up masochism years ago.
I played with one today for about 2 minutes in a store by my house and I liked it. It was noticeably snappier than my 6p and felt great in my hand. Didn't have time to mess with camera but I'm now even more excited to get my 2 xl in 2 weeks (or less)

I must say, the speakers are very nice. The stupid tether that Verizon, and everyone else uses kills the true hands on experience. The phone is barely bigger than my v30, Sleek and sexy. I am sure you'll enjoy it.

As I walked into Verizon they were about to mount the pixel 2 xl so they let me play with it before they mounted and it felt really great in the hand, alot lighter than I anticipated, and the texture on the metal felt suprising premium, I thought it was going to feel like a cheap phone case

I'm an Android purist. I go through phones like nobody's business. Ive always kept a Nexus or Pixel, as phones get released, I pick one up. This year I've had the Pixel XL, all year, along with it I had iPhone 7+, G6, S8 plus, Note 8, V30, in that order, as they are released. Before that, rinse and repeat.
I say this to express that the V30 is by far the hardest to leave behind, I may not. It's sleek, fast and checks ALL of the boxes, except Pure Android, and dual speakers.
The pixel misses, the wireless charging, and expandable storage.
The killer feature I was going to pass on the Pixel for is the 71 band for TMobile, but sadly it a year and a half from being deployed in my area.
You will not go won't with the V30. It is awesome! Best phone I've used to date... And that's AALLLL of them worth checking out.
But the speakers man, the speakers. The pure Android experience... Ridiculously pleasant to use for me.
Got my hands on one today as well

If anyone has a chance if they go look at one, enable development options, if possible on a demo version, and see if OEM unlock is there and if it is greyed out. I am also going to try to get over to Verizon tomorrow and check this out and will post a pic if I happen to make it over there.

I played with it yesterday, phone is nice but doesn't feel like a premium hardware specially when compared to Note 8 or V30.
Minus the pure Android and Camera - it's like many chinese branded $400 - $500 phone.
I didn't get that at all

I went to the store today and tried to enable developer options, the Verizon store sample did not allow me to do it. I went to about phone and clicked on everything 8+ times and nothing happened. I have used a stock phone in a while, so unless it was move I couldn't do it.
I spent a little more time with both phones. The 2xl feels very good in the hand imo. I also like the regular pixel 2. To me that felt more comfortable in the hand because it was smaller.
The screen on the 2xl is good. I liked the feel better than my S8+. Because the 2xl is a little wider and has a more solid feel on the sides it felt better than my Samsung. I have good size hands, I can palm a basketball, and on the 2xl my inner thumb or palm doesn't touch the curved screen. On my S8+ my inner hand meat can touch the screen when I reach across with my thumb.
Here are some photos of the 2xl and side by side with a screen burned Pixel XL
I also made sure the brightness was a 50% for both phones. You can see the POLED screen looks brighter.
XL2 Screen looks great, and those bezels look so much better!

I went back today and enabled developers options. And the bootloader is definitely locked. So glad I ordered mine from Google and completely unlocked. I spent more time with it today and it's a terrific phone. Snappy and the screen looked great. Brightness was all the way up and I didn't try to make any adjustments. Phone feels good and looks good. I understand why some people prefer the LG v30 and it's a great alternative but I think the 2 xl will make plenty of people happy.

I tested it out today as well and didn't get a "plastic-feeling" phone. The metal had a grainy texture to it and felt quite nice. I tested the XL since that's what I ordered. Didn't bother with the regular one. People said there was a "coating" on the metal, but I didn't seem to notice one like on the G5. That one felt like it had a clear rubber case on the metal.
Thanks for those pics @Bxrider117
Had to go the upsstore today and the verizon next door on Tyvola Rd on my side of Charlotte did not have them in. Told the nicer of the two guys I was interested in seeing the poled screen, explained how I'd heard on xda of the banding and not good quality in the other thread. One guy swooped in on me telling me how I could know or even say that for a phone that hasn't been released yet! I told him that the good verizon stores had demos. What a dummy, HIS store is supposed to have them but they said the google rep could not get any for them.

Your pics do give me some assurance that I won't have to send my blk64g 2xl back when it gets here!
