Ok, so it came first thing this morning. I've spent the last few days reading up on the forum, and was wanting to flash a new rom (for the customised screens etc)
Now, I know I'm a NOOB in the biggest sense of the word when it comes to WM but some of the abbreviations in the guides are confusing me, can someone please explain them to me, or excatley what i need to be doing (just until i work my way round a bit!)
I know that there's a noobs guide, and i have read it honest, but i don't wanna be bricking it!
Pwweeease?
Make sure you have windows mobile device center installed on your pc. Connect the hd2 via usb to your computer (with the cable included with your hd2) and wait until windows mobile device center says it is connected.
To put an official rom on your hd2, download the rom and run the .exe included in the package. Follow the steps onscreen and you're done.
To put a custom rom on your hd2, you need to flash hardspl first. Steps are explained in detail here . Basically it involves connecting your hd2 to the pc, running the hardspl .exe file on your pc, and following the onscreen steps. Then that is done, and you will have to run the .exe file included in the custom rom package, and follow the onscreen steps again. To be safe you won't have any bugs, do a hard reset of your hd2 just after flashing the custom rom. Look here how to do that, it is explained at nr. 15. Pretty easy
good luck
if you make sure your hd2 battery doesn't run out (higher than 50% is usually said), and you make sure your pc doesn't shut down or do anything weird while updating, and you don't disconnect the cable while you are flashing, chances are practically 0 you will brick it.
What abbreviations are confusing you?
Cheers for the quick reply mate, i don't wanna come across as a complete knob (although i probably am already!)
TBH, it was things like hardspl and the other one, sspl or something?
If i put a customised ROM on it, is there any way of going back or is that it then?
Also, is windows 6.5.3 worth it? It's new out of the box, so have no idea whats what yet.
What, if any roms would people suggest? Also, do push notifications for twitter and facebook work? I've found already that the stock FB app that comes with it doesn't let you see people's comments on status's etc
All very confusing so far, but I'm still not reaching for the iphone back.....Yet!

best to check what you have got on the device before you start upgrading..lol
when my phone arrived most of the updates from htc were on it already..
Forget about sspl (softspl), you don't need it. Hardspl is "better" (to keep things simple)
Flashing a new rom will delete all your settings, installed programs, etc etc. So backup what you need before flashing (you can use microsoft MyPhone -which is preinstalled on hd2's- to backup certain things).
About going back, yea you can 'go back', in case you can download the rom that is currently on your hd2. It is probably official hd2 rom version 1.48, but of course i'm not sure. But i don't think you would want to go back, there is no reason to. Unless you hate new roms, but you can always find one that is undebatably better and more up to date than the rom you are using now.
Yea windows mobile 6.5.3 is nice and in some ways a little better than 6.5, but it doesn't work 100% correctly with HTC sense. There are some graphical glitches with this on 6.5.3 roms.
I prefer Dutty's 0.3a rom (here) because it is basically the same as your stock rom, but with up to date software, up to date windows mobile 6.5, updated htc sense - and everything works flawlessly for me.
Haven't tried push notifications for facebook or twitter, so can't comment on that. 6.5.3 roms have some graphical glitches with HTC sense. Many other 6.5 roms have other customizations that I don't like.
Forget about the iPhone, the hd2 baby is miles and miles better (yes i've used the iPhone).
if you need more recommendations, shoot
Cheers for that mate. I'm gonna put sprog to bed and give it a go!
You are correct in the fact that it is a stock 1.48 rom shipped on the phone, please excuse my ignorance, this is my first wm phone! I'm an expert on the iphone now though lol!
I did read about flashing with bepe's thing, is that still needed?
Hopefully i'll find some decent FB and twitter apps that does push (I'm addicted lol!)
Umm, then to sort out google activsync again!
"bepe's thing" is hardspl, which is needed only once (ever) to unlock your phone to enable flashing custom roms. So yes, you need to do it when you want to flash a custom rom.
I don't want to be a damp rag or anything but I'd personally use the phone for a week or two before installing any custom ROMs. When I received my phone it was perfect, lasted 2 days easy on one charge (with everything set to auto update) and had no camera issues. I then installed the unofficial 1.48 and now the battery struggles to get 2 days even with most auto updates turned off and the camera developed the over exposure issue. Now I regret updating it and am slightly hesitant to do it again.
Also, most custom ROMs at the moment do not have very major upgrades to them and are usually just very slightly tweaked. I'm waiting for something more worthwhile to be released (like WM6.5.3 with a fully functional Sense) before I go and HSPL my phone. Take a look at this user for an example of what might happen.
But then again I may be acting over cautious and might not be enjoying the full power and epic-ness out of my HD2.

What is unofficial 1.48? There is an official 1.48, and most unofficial custom roms are based on a higher rom version than 1.48. I think you're being a little over cautious, I have flashed practically millions of roms on HTC devices and never experienced a problem. The problems you are having with battery and camera are probably related to your custom rom choice and/or your settings.
But you're right that there isn't a world of difference between the stock rom and newest custom roms, the hd2 is a relatively new device. Still, I feel you can't go wrong by updating the rom to a good custom one, and it will be better than the stock rom. Dutty's holy grail 0.3a is my recommendation, but to each one his own.
Slow down mate!
Northerneil,
I know you are dying to get into your device and flash roms like there's no tomorrow. I say STOP, slow down, take your time.
I would get to know how your device works the way it is first. One good thing about this is that if there any hardware problems you can return the device as an exchange without having to undo loads of changes that are NOT warranty friendly.
Next, READ, READ and READ again. Flashing roms sounds quite simple and the process has improved tremendously. The problem isn't flashing a rom; its knowing how to recover if it all goes wrong. Its getting to know the pitfalls and how to get out of them e.g your device rebooting for no reason, which is a problem some serial flashers are having right now.
Welcome on board, hope you heed my advice although I appreciate you are a big boy and can do what you want. However a bricked device can take a long time to fix, even if you know what you are doing, and if you are lvery ucky.
WB
PS: Feel free to PM me if you want to know more about certain functions and abbreviations. You need to know as much as possible before you start tinkering with your device.

By "unofficial" I was referring to the 1.48 405 WWE that was available for download before HTC made it official on their website.
I am still running that "unofficial" 1.48 ROM with the stock settings so I doubt that these problems have anything to do with my settings.
Hey guys, I have had my HD2 for about a few months now and I love it. I have been playing around with some apps, tweaks, and mods I found around the forums and I am impressed with the improvements this phone has made. My first HTC phone is the touch diamond and the company has come a long way since.
Anyway, I don't know if other people have found a way around these problems I am having and I haven't found many solutions in the forums either.
First things first, heres my setup:
manilla version 2.5.19211619.0
ROM version 1.48.707.2 (71294) WWE ROM date 11/09/09 (??)
radio 2.05.51.05_2
i also have some programs installed like duttys manager, clean rom etc.
the two major problems i have with the phone is that my phone will freeze and hang every so often and i would have to soft reset the phone. its like sense froze over and i cant operate the phone at all. the only thing that works is the start button. i run cleanrom on a daily basis and i have lots of free memory over.
another problem is sometimes texting takes a while to load up and the screen will not respond to me when i click to type. i have to exit the screen and go back numerous times before i can finally type my sms and send it. this doenst happen to all my texts, only some.
anyway, do you guys have any tips that i may have missed on how to improve the performance and ram distribution for the phone? i would like to stay away from cooking the rom unless there is no other alternative.
bump. to the front page.
well to be honest.. there are a lot of stickies in the themes and app section that can overall help with the performance aspect of your phone... just throwing it out there before some elitist with a HUGE E-Peen comes around and screams at you for not "searching"
i said it once.. i'll say it again.. the size of your E-Peen does NOT matter in the real world kids...
cheers
Aversion to HSPL / new ROM? Lots of pleasant upgrades in 2.10 that make it worthwhile.
Sounds like you need to flash a new set of roms to me.
I'm using Smaburg's newest Touch X-Extreme and the performance/feature increase from stock is excellent.
Lockups/Freezes are definately most easily got rid of by flashing in a new or different ROM, rather than messing about waiting for hot fixes etc.
Your ROM is old
you should install 1.66.404.1 or what the latest is in your language CLICK
nothing much with new rom, really
i will try cooked roms.. and see what happened
bah looks like my only option is to do a flashed rom then. alright, i'll check them up and run an update here. thanks guys.
well i hit a snag in the cooking process. i cant install hspl and im stumped on how to get around it. i am running spl-1.42.HSPL XE but when i run the hspl program, i get an error that states "you must have SPL.1.42.0000 installed" and the program terminates.
edit: nevermind apparently my phone is already flashed and i got 2.0x radio. im installing AHEN L6d rom to see if there are any improvements.
ok this whole thing is getting frustrating. i downloaded the ROM and put it on my sd card, but nothing happens when i go into bootloader mode. i stay in the tricolor screen and nothing is being updated. what gives??
I'm in a bit of a panic and think I need help.
I bought the HTC Hero from Bestbuy roughly Nov. 2009. And like everyone else love it, but was frustrated with all the bugs and slowness, lag ext. Reading and waiting for 2.1, getting impatient weekly...blah blah blah....but horrified to try to root the phone, because im not the techiest guy in the world, so when I saw that there was a 2.1 leak that I could just click from my computer, I did it like an impatient child.
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2206511_signed_test.exe
and have had a major problem ever since. The phone will shut off if its not plugged in. I have to constantly turn it back on and wait for it to reboot.
So I followed "How-To repair your bootloader after using the 2.1 RUU" to the T! With no error messages and got it back to "stock" which still looked like 2.1 to me. I formated the SD card from the phone, did a full wipe in that black/green boot page and flashed Beezy's "option 4",
I believe I did a nanbackup right before the "option 4". But I don't think it matters, since the phone was shutting down before that anyway.
So that's where I am. If I'm messing around with the phone (on a call, web, playing with apps) it will stay on, but as soon as I set it down and the screen goes to sleep, thats it, when I pick it up and hit the menu or power button, it reboots (white screen, HTC logo). Am I F'ed? I do have insurance through sprint, but believe that is void now, since I stated messing around with it.
I swapped Batteries with my wife's phone and it still happend, so it's not a bad battery.
I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong forum. I did a search for "constant rebooting" and couldn't find anything similar to my problem.
Thanks in advance.
If all you see is the white htc screen you probably aren't actually rebooting just rosie is restarting. Probably because the ruu doesn't work too well on its own. I suggest you just take the plunge and root, wipe, and flash fresh 2.0d or damage 2.07.2 ( your choice really, both are excellent roms)
Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Well, first off it doesn't sound like you are rebooting, it sounds like sense might just be restarting.
Also, don't panic. Whatever you have done is fixable
surely someone who is not posting from their phone will be along to help soon, if not I'll be back home and on my pc in a few hours
Just to confirm
Can you go into settings > about phone > software information (1.5 maybe slightly different I can't remember any more) and tell us what Firmware version says? this way we can make sure that you are running the appropriate version to RUU back to 1.5 and reroot.
I am not sure exactly what is still on your phone.
Also have you ever flashed a radio update from flipz?
I agree, that it isn't rebooting, but its the sense crashing and restarting. I would also agree, that your best option would be to root.
Honestly, the guides are laid out as plain as they could be. It isn't that difficult, you just have to check and re-check typed commands, if done manually.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised and find it simpler than you think.
However, ALWAYS make sure to do to the following:
1. nandroid before you do anything.
2. NEVER EVER NEVER EVER touch anything that doesn't say CDMA HERO. (gsm hero radio flashes can literally fry your nice phone into a nice paperweight)
3. Don't be afraid to ask questions here. I'm pretty new to this, but there are a lot of cool helpful people.
4. nandroid again. (copy nandroids to your PC/Mac and keep a whole library of them.) I even have some extra google space that I've been uploading them to incase I'm not at my computer and I need one...lol)
5. Don't get too sucked into it.
Thank you guys for responding, as I was worried I would get flamed for being an idiot for doing what I did.
"I suggest you just take the plunge and root, wipe, and flash fresh 2.0d or damage 2.07.2 ( your choice really, both are excellent roms) "
Isn't "How-To repair your bootloader after using the 2.1 RUU" basically rooting the phone? Because after I follow those instructions, I get the the recovery menu. I just haven't tried Damage roms yes.
Also, "Well, first off it doesn't sound like you are rebooting, it sounds like sense might just be restarting."

I should mention that I have been testing things like, Turning off "Screen Timeout" completely, 10 mins, 1 min, 30 seconds...ext. And it still shuts down after a few minutes when the screen is off......HOWEVER, it is random as far as how long it has been sitting.....Sometimes the screen will be black for a minute and when I hit the menu or power it will reboot....sometimes it will sit for 10 mins and will turn on.....very random, but it WILL reboot eventually.
Thanks again, guys

Do you see the first black HTC screen? I know I've done the HTC quietly brilliant screen, but then it goes right to lock screen and loading apps.
I still don't think it is a full reboot, but I'm not THAT up to speed with most of this stuff.
Also, RUU'ing back to stock, then rooting and installing a 2.1 rom by Damagless or Flips should be your best bet.
RUUing back to stock has some problems in and of itself, but it should go ok.

Sounds like you are using a 2.1 rom not the stock 1.5
I would try using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=608434 to correct your issues it will take you back to stock 1.56.651.2 that come with the phone
Oh and if you get any errors this will help too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654119
Guys, since he used the 2.1 RUU, isn't he only able to use the 2.1 RUU now? Not the 1.5?
I too am experiencing this.
Factory reset my phone and then flashed from 1.6 to 2.1. I have tried two different 2.1 roms (the sprint leak one and Freshrom) and both of them are causing spontaneous reboots of my phone. I never experienced reboots when on 1.6.
Software information:
2.1 fresh
baseband 1.04.01.09.21
Kernel is 2.6.29-d30020a8
build is fresh rom 2.0d
Software number is 2.20.651.1
PRI is flipz_01
PRL is 60660
any suggestions from anyone?

I believe you are correct, although I have yet to use any RUU
OP, you really should just root the thing flash a rom and succumb to the new obsession you don't even know you have yet
Personally, I'm a fan of RegawMODv2.1, it's lean and stable.
I think that even though you have run 2.1 RUU we can take you back to a bone stock 2.1
When I get home tonight I will try to link to all of the appropriate guides to get you there.
Once we have you back at a stock 1.5 I think we can all say "ROOT IT!" but I would feel more comfortable knowing that you came from the begining in the right order of things.
And get you on a solid stable Rom. I have recently started having issues with my damage rom and all of the aps2sd stuff that has been going on. Not sure what I am going to move to next. But that's besides the point, and none of it is Damageless's fault.
Ok, Kcarpenter, I'll be waiting LOL. I have been f'ing with this thing for a few days now, reading different forums and searching and searching. I finally broke down and posted here, because I'm at a loss. So I REALLY appreciate you guys taking the time to help me. Plugging the phone into my work truck laptop and running to the house to plug it in is wearing me down...
You just need to get over the fear of f*ing up your phone and root it. I'm not sure where the treads are on everything you need, but it's pretty straight forward.
If you had rooted while still running 1.5 you probably would not be in this mess. And Flipz has Fresh Kitchen which makes it even easier to Root and put a recovery console on.
"If you had rooted while still running 1.5 you probably would not be in this mess." You are absolutely correct, &RoidRage. I got excited when I saw the word "Official" 2.1, and jumped the gun.

If you get it to work then you can flash a custom rom. But make sure you download it and put it on the sdcard before doing anything else.
I know it says it is for the 110 error, but people have used it to get back to 1.5 from 2.1
Thanks, man. I'll give it a shot......I have nothing to loose at this point, so I'm over my fear of F'ing up the phone.

Since flashing Duttys WM6.5 Leo Holy Grail ROM to my HD I have been very impressed with it's performance, 99% of the time it is responsive and stable and seems happy even though several programs are running. It has made my HD a really nice phone.
But every now and again something weird will happen, usually activesync reports a problem, or all of my contacts vanish, sometimes files on the device (not SD) cannot be accessed. So I soft reset and it doesn't boot, it will get stuck on the orange splash screen.
In total it has happened about 4 times since I flashed the ROM on Dec 29. It happened last night and eventually the device loaded the background picture, then popped up an error dialogue saying something about being unable to open a file, there was no mention of the file name. I did a soft reset and it then automatically performed a hard reset.
The other times the phone just hangs on the orange splash screen every time, causing me to perform a hard reset manually. Sometimes it will work fine for a good few days, or sometimes fail after only 1 day.
Its really annoying. I cant seem to get a HTC that works at the moment. My TP2 is rubbish, I've tried several ROM's and it is consistently unstable, so I go back to my HD which was always reliable... And now this happens.
please Help or I'll be forced to turn to the darkside and get an iphone and I really don't want to do that!
Why not just return to the "reliable" firmware version used previously?
I'm not a fan of custom roms or 6.5, especially on this underpowered model, it's definitely the most reliable handheld I own or have owned with oem roms though, especially without it's resource gobbling pretty face on.
Not really the most helpful answer, but i suppose i cannot argue the reasoning behind it.
In defence of this ROM it is BRILLIANT when it is working, i'd actually argue that the device feels smoother with this ROM than it did with the stock Orange UK ROM.

Have you tried asking your question in one of Duttys threads. You may get a better response. Also, try flashing a different rom
Thanks.
Since posting the message the problem has not come back.
I have been thinking that there is a possibility that my server was hacked, i noticed a few things had changed on the server, i also had notices when i logged in to facebook and paypal, informing me that someone from New York had accessed my account. the server and facebook used to have the same password.
Is it possible that the problem i had was caused by a hacker on my exchange server issuing a command to reset the device? i know it can do something like this to protect data in the event of a phone going missing.
what does the device do if exchange server performs this routine?
Please help me find this problem... i dont want to buy an Iphone!
Ok I tried a different Rom, this time i used one of KWBR's:
http://media.celogeek.com/roms/kwbr/..._5.7_Sense.rar
a month down the line and its just started to go wrong again.
this time, i find that the device slows down a little bit, prompting me to soft reset, when it boots i find that my contacts are missing, active sync will not load properly, it briefly flashes on screen but lower 1/3rd of active sync window is missing (appears transparent or black) only way to get contacts back and active sync working again is hard reset!
Anyone got any ideas what might be going on?
its been doing this now on both ROM's but i have no idea what may be causing it, as far as additional software i only install a few apps: Slimcontrol 1.5, Core player & GcZ2 (geocaching tool) which all have been running fine before.
Hello,
I've got a problem with my HTC HD2.
I have it for over a year. Since then I have formated it 3 times, 2 times I have updated HTC rom (from their website). The problem is, that every 1 month after format my phone is going wild. It responds very slow to my touch, it hangs, freezes, sometimes touchscreen doesnt work at all, sometimes I can't answer phones, everything turns on very slowly. What can be the problem? I found out that the problem gets bigger after installing CHT and themes. With clean soft it doesnt seem to go wild (however I haver never used clean phone for more than 2 weeks...)
Have you considered trying an Android ROM?
Posted from my NexusHD2... Word!
No I haven't beacuase I heard that it's very battery consuming. Also I like WM6.5 and stuff I can download on it (CHT, Themes, Apps). Not everyone has problems with very slow device after installing CHT and stuff? Is there any other fix not so dramatic as changing from WM to Android?
At the very least I would consider
Backing up all important data
Running a task 29
Flashing the Rom of your choice
I actually went back to winmo from a nand android rom to see how the battery compared and its just about the same I'd say. Going back to winmo almost forced me to run my hd2 over with my car. Try a nand rom its real easy to switch back if you don't like it.
