disabling data on sgs - Galaxy S I9000 General

ive found some where on this forum on how to turn off the data connection
here our to steps
Try this:
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"/ or just disable data
6. Reboot
Now data should be disabled (you won't see E/3G icons in the notification bar) and you can use WiFi whenever you want.
Credit doesn't go to me some one eles on the forum just wanted to repost as i cant find and some people might find this useful

i do it that way to, but it only works until you do Reboot
it doesn't save the changes
after the phone reboots, you have to go back into the menu to manually turn data off.

So much work. Use APNdroid and a widget on your homescreen to endable/disable. And yes, it does save even after reboots.

Still worthwhile
Here's a good reason why an automated way of using this service menu option would be a good idea:
APNDroid (and similar programs) 'disable' data connection by adding additional characters to the APN information of your phone. They, therefore, don't disable data connection, they merely invalidate the APN information.
What happens though is that the phone still tries to connect to the GPRS/3G network, using the invalidated information. On my network, Vodafone UK, enabling the APN later again (i.e., putting the valid information back) does not lead to switching the GPRS/3G connection back!! Only switching on/off the airplane mode switches back on the cellular data connection!
My guess why: invalidating the APN information (and the phone using this information to attempt connecting) leads to a sequence of GPRS attachment requests being sent to the (cellular) network. Some operators might react to these requests by disabling any future attempt of attaching to the network - a denial-of-service prevention, if you will. When you switch APNdroid (or similar) back on, the cellular attachment has been disabled on the operator side (since you've been sending invalid attachment requests). Switching airplane mode on/off re-attaches you from scratch to the cellular network - GPRS/3G will work again!
I observe this behaviour on my and my wife's phone consistently IF the cellular connectivity has been disabled for more than 60 minutes (possibly a timeout set by Vodafone UK). We tried several APN switching programmes.
When using the service menu switch, you can use your connectivity at any time - no airplane mode switching required. Problem though is that the menu selection is far more complicated than the airplane mode switching ;-)
So what's required is a programmer's work to create an automated (widget-based) switch, using this menu!!!!
BTW: my friend's Hero has an HTC-provided widget, doing exactly that. He's never observed any issues with it, as described above.

Has anyone tried DCswitch+ it supposedly doest exactly that - disabling the dta connection via service menu.

Yes, tested it work like advertised.
thanks man.

That's very handy. Thanks for the tip.

Hi,
I don't know if it uses the service menu but Smoda widget doesn't change the apn string and does switch off the data connection, saving me great amount of battery time. I'll have a look at DCswitch+ and try to compare.

there is an even easier method just install the app APN on-off Widget

But this also only renames the apn, right? It is mentioned in the comments... If so, it will not help to save battery, like the method of the first post.

you can use SP if the goal is to save battery

Is there a way to force WiFi only?

I have free unlimited data for a few months, but when it is over I would like my phone to never connect to the internet through the carrier unless I specifically tell it to (Prefer to use the WiFi feature). Is there a setting, registry hack or other way that I can do this. I appologize if this is not a mogul specific question, I just figured it would be hardware specific.
yeah, there are a few free programs i've found on on xda that allow you to disable the gprs, etc... then all you have to do flick on your wifi switch and you're good to go.
I've attached a copy of the program that i personally use. I found it on this site but i don't have a clue what thread it was....
what i've done is after installing the program i set the "voice dail" button on my phone to activate the NoData program instead. Then i can easily toggle off the services i wish to use.... keeping them turned off also increases your battery life tremendously
Thanks for the reply. I tried that app, the connection that came up was CDMA1X so I disbled it, and then went to internet explorer it still browsed the web without a wifi connection, so I assume this didn't work.
Do you have sprint? If so, I'm not sure why you're phone would have a different setup than mine. When using that program i have two listings come up: 1. Phone as Modem, 2. Sprint PCS.
If i disable both i get only wifi.
thanks

ok i just played around with my phone a little more and have one other idea.
begin by tapping: start>settings>connections tab>connections>manage existing connections
select one of the options in the list and then tap the "proxy settings" tab.
uncheck the box "This network connects to the internet".
Repeat for each connection.
Hopefully this will solve your problem
I tried that too, unfortunately when I close the connections settings and go back in the check mark is back.
Hi, I'm not sure if you have solved this problem already but, somehow I did. I went to manage existing connections and assign a username and password . So now whenever, it tries to connect on the dial up (cdma1x), it prompts for a password, just press "cancel". I also have some programs for different home screens and contacts manager if you're interested.
YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! This program has allowed me to kill all apps from using the data connection which lets USB Modem actually WORK on my Mogul! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

WTF!!! Crazy data connection!

I have disabled the connection before, but now i can change the password, delete anything and whatnot and the fone will still FORCE connect itself to the data connection, which is gonna cost me big $$. This only happens once I open up opera/pie/google maps though.
right now my connection is basically:
Name:blahhhh
number:#97f399gg
username:sefse
password:hhhhh
domain*:xxxxxdaaa
i have tried everything, even completly deleting all the accounts.
what seems to happen is that the password goes for 5 digits to 16 somehow.
idk if that is back to what it is supposed to be with the #777 connection.
Using 3.0.1 custom DCD Rom, with opera, n some other bs programs
Anyhelp on how to stop this is appreciated

Google Maps and other apps that require data will automatically start a data connection if you initiate them.
If you turn on WiFi this should stop it because you are using another way of connecting.
Do you use your data plan from your carrier? If not you can always go to the EPST settings and disable EVDO and just use 1X. This will kill all data and just let you use the CDMA settings.
Okkkkk
I was able to attempt to activate them before and would just get an error, expectially with PIE, but now idk.
No i do not have the data plan, and im about 2-3MB into data which sucks. Im supposed to have a data block but i guess not.
To kill the EVDO settings, what would that be under?
( making the data parameters section blank did not work)
Also if i do this will i still be able to connect to Rev-A and whatnot?
[obv not do EVDO or able to send mms, but those two i can live without]

You dont neccessaraly kill EVDO all you are doing is only letting your phone see a CDMA signal. Like for making calls and such. This will iliminate EVDO / REV A , but it is simple to go back. Plus i learned that it gave me way better coverage signal, but with no ability to use data.
Completely disable 3g data connections forever, save wifi
This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. To be safe, you may have to delete the Verizon Or "Internet" Connection on the Tasks Tab of Settings > Connections > Connections. Save and exit.
Voila! Wifi, yes; 3g, no! No more nasty billing surprises.
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.
Hope it helps.
Hi,
Can you tell me where to find the guardian.exe file. I cant locate it any where is it hidden perhaps. I need to disable wifi for this phone. The property that I have does not have wifi currently. So the Wifi feature drains the battery. Thank you very very much if you can provide the information.

I just use the slider switch on the side of the phone to enable/disable wifi. I use RyanMogul's ROM and it works like a charm.
I like nueWiFiSwitch - Hardware Switch (it's in Ryan's ROM I'm using) Disable the wifi switch and whenever I want to use it, I turn it on with Communication Manager.
(the hardware switch would turn on random times when putting in or out of my pocket, etc. Works great!

How to set wifi as default rather than GPRS?

Anyway?
if better , perm disable of GPRS will be good .
Try NoData to disble GPRS. Personally I'm not having much luck with it as my TD2 keep closing it down in background.
Alternative is to deliberately set an incorrect APN so it cannot connect even when it tries.
I don't know of any method of setting a default connection type.
NoData.cab works fine in my device, but HD Tweak can do the same job, so I removed it.
Would like to do the same too, and then have my weather and emails be updated via my home network thru wireless only...
any one able to do this?
Of course you can! Using 3g or any other paying data connection when WiFi is available is simply foolish

Done spose you would like to tell me how please...i am not that clued in with the HTC device just yet...and have used alot of my data already...which i have to pay for...
Thanks..
With pleasure:
Some people say they can deactivate gprs,3g etc within windows..but as I emptied my sim credit within a minute when I first started my Topaz, I decided not to worry anymore by installing Modaco's NoData.cab (it's free, google for it) and disabling all costly data connections from my operator. After a few days I realized that nodata.cab was no longer needed because I had also HD Tweak, who can do the same.If you use it go to point 6. and disable the 3 last settings. So it's up to you:NoData.cab or Hd Tweak...and I'm sure even others utilities work aswell.
Or you simply delete the settings for 3g conections and the software will decide to use WIFI it's avaible instead 3G (because it will not work without settings.)
How do you do that? In this case you would have to do the network autoconfig again if you need 3g etc..anyway this discussion is funny because it is rare to find a thread with multiple solutions recently....I was getting bored of unsolved problems . Cheers !

I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic.

So it's not about "deleting" anything, you're just using another application (costs USD$19.95). May be a solution
You understand me wrong.
First solution about deleting the connection was the simplest one if you want to use only WIFI.
Second : "I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic."
I use this app ONLY to verify and to be sure were the app goes to made traffic not for directing the app.
SPB Monitor tell you if you have one or more connections how much traffic you made...
and I see what I tell you if I have 3G closed and WIFI activated the traffic was made on WIFI and 3G remain closed.
But if you have 3G connected and start after that WIFI the 3G will made the traffic.
OK I understand, may I ask you again what are the steps for your first solution?
1. if you don't want to warry about 3G connection and you don't want to use it.
-"Connection setup/menu" disable auto configuration
-"Connections/manage existing connections" and delete all the connections
- enable WIFI and all the programs will use WIFI(will be the single way)
2. If you want to use 3G and WIFI
-when you use WIFI be sure/verify the 3G connection it's closed(click on the status bar-signal strenght icon and if it's active disable it)
-afterthat enable WIFI
Otherwise if 3G it's active will be the first option for applications to acces the internet.
Try to enable Autodisconect (ADV CONFIG or HDtweak) of data connection after you use it to disconnect automatically for you.
I hope I help you.
Solution 1 doesn't work here, wasted a couple of euros ..back to my good ooold system.
i still can't disable it, i just bomb $400 for activating gprs ..
new to WM phone , so ... kinda slow .

Hi, will this solution also fix my issue? My issue being:
-No dataplan, but do not want do disable/delete 3g/gsm, because I still want to use it sporadically on the road, and recieve MMS. But only when I choose to manually.
-At the same time, I want the automatic updates of weather, push-email, stock and such, but ONLY when I'm in a known WLAN.
In simple terms, I want to deny the 3g/E/H from automatically connecting, without deleting them. At the same time, wifi should be allowed to automatically connect, and update selected services.
Is this possible?

application to control different phone profile

Hi,
are there any application to control different phone profile.
i would like to have at least three profile
a) in my home phone should ring, wireless connection should be via desired wifi connection (blue tooth and data connection via tmobile should be disable)
b) when i am in the car I need blue tooth enable, wifi disable
c) when i am at work, bluetooth disable, wifi disable, and data connectin via tmobile disable.
etc...
please advice me whether there is a application to do this.
thanks

Toggle Settings from the market seems to do most of this, although not sure about turning off the data connection. You can set it to 2G though.
I think Locale would do some too - it can be set to behave in a certain way when at a certain location - I've NEVER used it though, just read about other users using it for this kind of function so check it out
hi,
thanks for your quick responses.
yes local will do some of it, but i mainly needed to change profile as an when i needed, i.e. not based on geographical location.
if you come across any other application please let me know. i am sure this sort of application will be really useful for lot of other people.

You can also try "Ear" it does almost everything except the data connection part
the 5 widgets you can get (hold finger on empty space -> htc widget -> settings) will do this... sure, you don't get the benefit of pre-sets (there _will_ be an app that will do this, somewhere) but it's totally flexible
you can certainly do the "wifi on / bluetooth & data off" and vice versa for leaving the house via locale... might be able to get by with manual toggles after that (or also have a location for work)
location works great!
try it!

My HD2 is harassing me with UMTS

Hello,
I just bought a Leo. My provider is Vodafone IT.
From the very first moment, while WiFi is present in my house, the phone tried to connect to Internet via UMTS. It does so often when Wifi is temporarily unavailable.
After my old Glofiish M800, one year ago, made me spend 3€ for two consecutive connections for the duration of a half second each (1.50€ on connection then) I requested Vodafone to completely disable Internet access for my SIM card. All I did then was to connect the PDA to USB cable and SPB Weather immediately tried to update weather without even waiting for Net via ActiveSync to become available in a few seconds.
With Leo, I also deleted all network access points from configuration, set all profiles to Office Network and unchecked (my ROM is Italian) "This connection has Internet access" "Questa connessione dispone di accesso a Internet".
What occurs now is that often, but really OFTEN, even during the night, especially when I'm on the road and I'm not interested in Facebook, YouTube or weather, the phone turns on and two popup appear:
One as a notification "Called: " (before deleting AP "Called: web.omnitel.it" "Chiamata effettuata: web.omnitel.it"). The other as error message about problems with GPRS.
I also have to pay great attention to the second popup. Once, but fortunately not today, it went over the lock screen and I was unable to unlock it as the slider was below the popup. I was also unable to close the popup as the screen was locked so I had to soft-reset.
I only installed TomTom and Core Player for now.
I DON'T WANT TO PAY VODAFONE LOTS OF MONEY FOR UMTS ACCESS WITHOUT MY CONSENT, NOR SIGN UP FOR FLAT PLANS AS I HAVE WIRELESS ACCESS IN EVERY PLACE I USUALLY GO!!!
Can somebody help me tell Leo to NEVER TRY to use UMTS? I had to agree with Vodafone that I would have been unable to even send MMSs and perform videocalls until I restore UMTS, but I can't spend this huge money for the sake of weather and for greedy (it's the right word) software that just want to connect to the Internet whenever THEY want (ie. Windows Vista/7 does Windows Update only when Internet is detected, it never tries to connect until you do manually).
Thank you. Please anser me ASAP. If I don't find a solution, I will return the PDA to the seller (it's a great PDA, I wouldn't like to)

Hi, I followed what you suggested and, in order to test faster, I tried to manually update weather from HTC Sense.
First of all, even if I uncheck the Internet access checbox from Office Network ("My work network" you mentioned), I always see it comes back again. I found that "ISP settings" only shows two tabs, and no Internet/proxy checkbox, so I also tested selecting this connection.
I also entered "*" as list of intranet addresses.
Every time I try to update weather, for all of these tests, I see the 3G arrows on top of notification bar flashing for a couple of seconds and the same exact alerts
Does your phone always connect to 3G?
[EDIT] I also tested http://www.htc.com/au/faqs.aspx?p_id=297&cat=264&id=118112, no result. But actually the help page says it clearly: it's normal that the phone will notice errors.
Is there any registry tweak or what?
Hello,
To solve your problem, go to the redfrogfish website, google to find the link. Download and install the Data Controller cab. This enables you to turn on/off the data connection function of the HD2
(I wanted to give you the link, but I am a new user and not allowed to do so)

I think you are going further into the settings than i need to.
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connections - switch to advanced tab - click 'select networks'
See my image 1 - setting the top dropdown to 'my work network' (or 'the internet', it gets called slightly diff thing depending on your setup, ,)) means it will look for whatever active connection is available and use that.
I also have a commmanager that has seperate on/off toggles for 3g and data.(see pic 2) So, if i turn off data connection, but leave 3g on, even though i have 3g (well, H) showing available on the top bar, if i go to update the weather it comes up with 'connection error'. If i start opera, it fails, etc etc.
Back into comm manager., turn back on the data toggle, everything works again.
If i turn off 3g, and leave data off, I get the same results.
