WTF!!! Crazy data connection! - Mogul, XV6800 General

I have disabled the connection before, but now i can change the password, delete anything and whatnot and the fone will still FORCE connect itself to the data connection, which is gonna cost me big $$. This only happens once I open up opera/pie/google maps though.
right now my connection is basically:
Name:blahhhh
number:#97f399gg
username:sefse
password:hhhhh
domain*:xxxxxdaaa
i have tried everything, even completly deleting all the accounts.
what seems to happen is that the password goes for 5 digits to 16 somehow.
idk if that is back to what it is supposed to be with the #777 connection.
Using 3.0.1 custom DCD Rom, with opera, n some other bs programs
Anyhelp on how to stop this is appreciated

Google Maps and other apps that require data will automatically start a data connection if you initiate them.
If you turn on WiFi this should stop it because you are using another way of connecting.
Do you use your data plan from your carrier? If not you can always go to the EPST settings and disable EVDO and just use 1X. This will kill all data and just let you use the CDMA settings.

Okkkkk
I was able to attempt to activate them before and would just get an error, expectially with PIE, but now idk.
No i do not have the data plan, and im about 2-3MB into data which sucks. Im supposed to have a data block but i guess not.
To kill the EVDO settings, what would that be under?
( making the data parameters section blank did not work)
Also if i do this will i still be able to connect to Rev-A and whatnot?
[obv not do EVDO or able to send mms, but those two i can live without]

You dont neccessaraly kill EVDO all you are doing is only letting your phone see a CDMA signal. Like for making calls and such. This will iliminate EVDO / REV A , but it is simple to go back. Plus i learned that it gave me way better coverage signal, but with no ability to use data.

Completely disable 3g data connections forever, save wifi
This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. To be safe, you may have to delete the Verizon Or "Internet" Connection on the Tasks Tab of Settings > Connections > Connections. Save and exit.
Voila! Wifi, yes; 3g, no! No more nasty billing surprises.
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.
Hope it helps.

Hi,
Can you tell me where to find the guardian.exe file. I cant locate it any where is it hidden perhaps. I need to disable wifi for this phone. The property that I have does not have wifi currently. So the Wifi feature drains the battery. Thank you very very much if you can provide the information.

I just use the slider switch on the side of the phone to enable/disable wifi. I use RyanMogul's ROM and it works like a charm.

I like nueWiFiSwitch - Hardware Switch (it's in Ryan's ROM I'm using) Disable the wifi switch and whenever I want to use it, I turn it on with Communication Manager.
(the hardware switch would turn on random times when putting in or out of my pocket, etc. Works great!

Cingular 8525 - Can we disable GPRS/EDGE and use only Wi-Fi ?

Is it possible to setup the 8525 so that it only connects to internet through Wi-Fi and not any of the other options? Based on some threads, it looked like Cingular has disabled this option, but I am not quite sure. Thanks.
The only way I was able to do it was to call Cingular Tech and have them disable the GPRS on their end, now if I go to PIE and the WiFi is off, the GPRS/EDGE Connection pop-up opens, then I get an error message saying the network could not be found and a dismiss icon....
The only way it will connect to IE is through WiFi now.

if you go to settings then connection and delete the connection settings for gprs it will not connect and you can use wifi only
however i seem to keep getting gprs not connected error if i do so?
I'm having the same problem. I'm totally green to the high tech world. Heck this is my first attempt at anything greater than using my calculator function in a phone So if someone could walk me through what I need to do to set my phone up so I can connet through wifi i would reaaaally appreciate it.
I had Cingular put me on the no data plan (not even pay per use). In case that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance for the help.
All I did was go in to the connection settings and change the User name and Password. I do not get any error messages stating the network cannot be found. I get a login screen with User/Pass and Domain. I just click cancel and it drops back to IE.
Now I do not have to worry about accidentally connecting to their service.
well,we can very much achieve it -- In the internet settings in connections, select both of them to My ISP,edit it to nowap.cingular.com
Make sure setting is set to Internet, not work!
I did it and I use only wifi all the time!!
The previous solutions are not really workable for me since I don't want to delete my cellular data connection, I just want to be able to turn it on and off as I choose. With Windows Live, I can have a Wifi connection and turn off cellular data in the comm manager screen and it will just open the cellular connection again.
A hack to turn off the "auto connect" for the cellular data would be great. Make it like the BT or WIFI, where I have to go to the comm screen and turn it on. That choice would be great.
Anyhow, I am thinking of making the Work connection as the default, then deleting all work connections. Then when I actually want a cellular data connection, I could manually select it and say connect. I'm not sure if the applications will close it and try the work connection again or not. I will try it and post again, probably tomorrow.

This works wonders:

ETA: This is what I have been using to deal with gprs autoconnect on my 8525 and it's perfect for my uses. You just start the program and toggle on or off the data connections.

It really works thanks for your research

How to force data connection off but retain data

I have a data plan and many programs that set to auto connect. But is there a way that I can force the data not connect?
I am worried about when I am roaming in other countries the roaming data fees are too high so I want to shut if off but keep the voice on.

Sure. You could simply go to Start Menu - Settings - Connections - Connections and delete your existing settings. Probably a really good idea to write them down first if you don't have them!
If your phone has WiFi you can still connect that way when you are in a hotspot and check email etc. I think the only thing that doesn't work over WiFi might be Exchange ActiveSync. If you don't use Exchange even that will not be an issue.
If your phone was provided by your cellular carrier it is possible the settings could possibly be hard to delete. In that case, try making additional dummy settings which you know cannot work (if you are not sure what to put base them on some jumbled up version of what you had before that cannot work) then make the dummy settings the default choice.
If you need more info post your carrier and the phone you have and we can try to give more specific advice.
You can use an app called Modaco NoData which gives you the options to enable or disable the different connections that you have on your phone (edge, mms, etc) I use it and it's great!

If you don't have a data block, you run the risk of of connecting to EvDo and getting charged 'pay as you go'.
But then there was a change to the data plan about a month ago and I hear it is now nearly impossible to NOT have a real data plan.

yeah thats what ive heard. It seems like if you want a ppc or smartphone that your have to get the data package to even get the phone. thanks for the quick response.
This is something I banged out for a couple of Sprint users, but it covers the basics of what you have to do for other carriers as well:
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=180141
I just switched from Qwest to Verizon and got upgraded to the 6800 from the 6700. To get around the data plan you can use the pay as you go just change the dial up number to anything but #777 and you never connect to the network and don't get charged.
I dont have a data plan either. I use the wifi all the time. the main reason I got this phone was for the wifi capability. I am curious how to use it uner flight mode because it never lets me..

simple solution
It's a lot easier to check the "use dialing rules" box. I had a HTC Touch that I used this on and when I lost that, went to a Mogul. I love the wifi on it! I worked as a ATS rep for Sprint for 5 years and half the time when a windows phone would not connect to vision, it was the checked dialing rules box or a wrong number like the customer's own number instead of the dialing string. I tried just deleting the dialing string but even a soft reset caused the phone to recreate the #777 as well as the phone as modem #777. I hated the phone connecting on it's own, bumping the wrong button in my pocket, and I know this will work every time. EVDO data transfer charges without a plan will cap at $75 now but still why take the chance? If you absolutely have to get on the web and there's no wifi around, break down, call *2 and add a $15 vision plan, do what you need to like find a location with Live search then cancel it the next day. The plan will be prorated from when you added it to when it was cancelled. The only hitch is you have to allow your device to IOTA successfully while in a Sprint service area once to get the data settings in the phone which entails the data transfer again. Ahhh, I'm liking the wifi more and more......

How to set wifi as default rather than GPRS?

Anyway?
if better , perm disable of GPRS will be good .
Try NoData to disble GPRS. Personally I'm not having much luck with it as my TD2 keep closing it down in background.
Alternative is to deliberately set an incorrect APN so it cannot connect even when it tries.
I don't know of any method of setting a default connection type.
NoData.cab works fine in my device, but HD Tweak can do the same job, so I removed it.
Would like to do the same too, and then have my weather and emails be updated via my home network thru wireless only...
any one able to do this?
Of course you can! Using 3g or any other paying data connection when WiFi is available is simply foolish

Done spose you would like to tell me how please...i am not that clued in with the HTC device just yet...and have used alot of my data already...which i have to pay for...
Thanks..
With pleasure:
Some people say they can deactivate gprs,3g etc within windows..but as I emptied my sim credit within a minute when I first started my Topaz, I decided not to worry anymore by installing Modaco's NoData.cab (it's free, google for it) and disabling all costly data connections from my operator. After a few days I realized that nodata.cab was no longer needed because I had also HD Tweak, who can do the same.If you use it go to point 6. and disable the 3 last settings. So it's up to you:NoData.cab or Hd Tweak...and I'm sure even others utilities work aswell.
Or you simply delete the settings for 3g conections and the software will decide to use WIFI it's avaible instead 3G (because it will not work without settings.)
How do you do that? In this case you would have to do the network autoconfig again if you need 3g etc..anyway this discussion is funny because it is rare to find a thread with multiple solutions recently....I was getting bored of unsolved problems . Cheers !

So it's not about "deleting" anything, you're just using another application (costs USD$19.95). May be a solution
You understand me wrong.
First solution about deleting the connection was the simplest one if you want to use only WIFI.
Second : "I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic."
I use this app ONLY to verify and to be sure were the app goes to made traffic not for directing the app.
SPB Monitor tell you if you have one or more connections how much traffic you made...
and I see what I tell you if I have 3G closed and WIFI activated the traffic was made on WIFI and 3G remain closed.
But if you have 3G connected and start after that WIFI the 3G will made the traffic.
OK I understand, may I ask you again what are the steps for your first solution?
1. if you don't want to warry about 3G connection and you don't want to use it.
-"Connection setup/menu" disable auto configuration
-"Connections/manage existing connections" and delete all the connections
- enable WIFI and all the programs will use WIFI(will be the single way)
2. If you want to use 3G and WIFI
-when you use WIFI be sure/verify the 3G connection it's closed(click on the status bar-signal strenght icon and if it's active disable it)
-afterthat enable WIFI
Otherwise if 3G it's active will be the first option for applications to acces the internet.
Try to enable Autodisconect (ADV CONFIG or HDtweak) of data connection after you use it to disconnect automatically for you.
I hope I help you.
Solution 1 doesn't work here, wasted a couple of euros ..back to my good ooold system.
i still can't disable it, i just bomb $400 for activating gprs ..
new to WM phone , so ... kinda slow .

Hi, will this solution also fix my issue? My issue being:
-No dataplan, but do not want do disable/delete 3g/gsm, because I still want to use it sporadically on the road, and recieve MMS. But only when I choose to manually.
-At the same time, I want the automatic updates of weather, push-email, stock and such, but ONLY when I'm in a known WLAN.
In simple terms, I want to deny the 3g/E/H from automatically connecting, without deleting them. At the same time, wifi should be allowed to automatically connect, and update selected services.
Is this possible?

turn off autoconnect of data connection

i just got this prepaid sim, that charges per MB that i use, and i have the APN, so i make a new connection, fill in the user name and password, and then i just connect, but when i want to stop using it, i go in communication manager, and turn off the data connection, but a bit later i realize that it turned back on... i want to prevent that.
and second thing i wanna ask is, they offered me "high speed" connection, suposedly 3G, when i want to use the internet on my phone, i just open a browser and it connects and i start browsing, will it use the 3G automatically? cause when i go to comunication manager i only see "data connection" turned "on"

Hi ibsa03,
when the wifi signal is weak, your PDA will automatically connect to 3G.
I would advise you to change your Data Connection settings as you can disable them via the NoData/Dial-up EnabledDisabler program (search forum for the links to these programs for download or check your current ROM to see if it's already cooked in) to disable 3G.
As Mastoid said use NoData to toggle off data connection when you don't want to use it
thanks! im gonna try it out now.
as to the other doubt i had.. if i start browsing without the 3G turned on, what will my maximum speed be? using a 3G network coverage that is..
You might try using MonteCristoff's HD Tweak (search forums for it)... it has option to set autodisconnect timer (and yeah, it works).
As to your last question, depends how your device is set. If it has band autoselect, it'll try to use highest speed possible... meaning, HSDPA/HUSPA if available by network (and you write it is).
Othervise, if you force GSM/disable 3G, it will use EDGE or other highest GSM speed...
excellent
