While poking around in the internals of Kies I discovered a way to update your firmware without having to start Kies.
This may be valuable for those who have problems with Kies recognizing their phone, and for those who simply cannot stand the bloat.
You do need to
You do need to have Kies installed, you simply don't need to load it all just to check or update your firmware.
Follow these simple steps (note: DO NOT connect your phone yet!):
Make sure Kies isn't running and doesn't start automatically:
- If you have a Kies icon on your taskbar tray, right-click it and uncheck "Auto start Kies TrayAgent" and "Auto start Kies".
- Make sure Kies isn't running: use Task Manager or your favorite task killer. If you want to be sure Kies isn't running, simply reboot your PC.
Now, to access the firmware update module:
- Open the file manager and navigate to "C:\Program Files\Samsung\Kies" (note: on 64bit systems like mine, replace "Program Files" with "Program Files (x86)")
- Find the file "MSC.Thunder.FirmwareUpdate.exe"
- Run it by double-clicking. It will show a window with graphic indicating no device is connected.
- Finally, connect your phone.
- Voila!
You can create a shortcut to it by right-clicking the file, selecting "Copy", navigating to where you want the shortcut to be (your desktop for example), then right-clicking on an empty spot and selecting "Paste Shortcut".
---[HERE BE DRAGONS]---
For those daring enough to venture beyond this point and risk persecution and death, here is a secret key sequence I discovered in the firmware update module.
DON'T connect your phone just yet!
Test Mode:
- Run "MSC.Thunder.FirmwareUpdate.exe"
- When the window indicates no device is connected, press and hold <Left Ctrl><Left Alt>'U'-'P' (that's Control, Alt AND the letters 'U' and 'P', all at once!)
- You will see an alert box saying "Test Mode On"
- Repeat to turn Test Mode off (note: you will have to close the alert box first)
- You're on your own here, I've not tested anything beyond this point.
I have confirmation from people on different forums that Test Mode helped them upgrade phones that Kies didn't want to upgrade otherwise.
If you have problems upgrading, try it! But please remember that Test Mode is what it says, no-one is making any promises that it will do the same thing (or anything at all for that matter) in newer versions of Kies.
Sounds interesting, thanks for share that information.
Regards
Christopher

Interesting! I put the updating software in test mode, and rather than saying my device can't be upgraded it tells me that the latest version is already installed...
I guess it REALLY doesn't mean anything, but for some reason it still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
Very interesting! Maybe those of us who get "this version cannot be updated" can update the firmware with one of those modes!!!
I managed to finally update the firmware from a non-stock JF3 rooted firmware, on a German phone with UK firmware, in South Africa!!!
I tried all kinds of things and could not get KIES to update to the new firmware, no matter what firmware etc I used. Here is what finally worked for me :
- Flash with JF3 from Samsung-firmwares if you are not running this already, does not matter if rooted.
- Start KIES without connecting the phone, open firmware upgrade and hold keys ctrl+alt+u+p to get it to go into test mode
- Connect the phone and viola, you can upgrade!
Note, this does not seem to work on the newest KIES version. I tried this on both my netbook (old KIES) and my pc (newest KIES) and only the old version worked. I am ugrading as I type.
Note this may not work on branded phones. I own an unlocked SGS
Glad it helped you to upgrade
This shows why it is sometimes better to hold on to older versions of software (Kies). Newer isn't always better in every respect

Absolutely. Although it might also have something to do with 64 vs 32 bit but I highly doubt it. Curious to see if this also works for others
What Kies version worked for you? Do you still have the installer?
By newer version not working, do you mean that test mode is or isn't available? Or did it simply not help with upgrading?
If you or someone else still has a working version, it would be nice to upload it somewhere so others can use it, too.
I was on the stock JF3 firmware.. and KIES was telling me a couple days ago that this fw was the latest (which ofc isn't), since yesterday it says that the version on my device is not upgradable..
Anyway since switching to "test mode", it gives me the option to the JM1 version.
Dunno where my phone is from.. probably Germany or Uk i suppose..

Kies_1.5.0.10052_28, I don't have the installer but you should have no problem finding it online. It's the second newest one

Testing on Vista x64 + Kies 10074_2. (SGS= ROOTED PDA JM5, PHONE JM3)
By clicking on MCS.thunder...exe opens firmware update screen less than a second, closes itself, shows loading screen of kies, and finally kies its open.
Cant use MCS.Thunder...exe alone.
Anyway, tried method ctrl-alt-u-p after opening firmware updating function on kies, and always the same result: Your device cant be upgraded (more or less, my kies is in spanish)... dont know thats because there is no newer firmware available or because my phone is rooted... or whatever reason.

You have to do what Miki says, make sure Kies is NOT running the background.
Check if you have the Kies icon in the lower right corner of your taskbar.
If it's running, right click it, uncheck "Auto start Kies TrayAgent" and "Auto start Kies" and then exit Kies completely.
Now you should be able to run it just fine.
When trying to run the "test mode" I always get this message (running W7 64bit):

Nothing in task manager regarding Kies.
No taskbar icon kies related (showing all)... BUT
I've tried again (same steps than before...) and firmware window stays.
(dunno)
By connecting phone shows the same msg: "PDA: JM5, Phone:JM3"... and something like "the version of this device cant be updated"...
ctrl-alt-u-p just toggle test mode from on to off with no more info.
Hi,
I followed your guide, and this is what happened:
I shot this video to show you guys whats happening.
Please help:
please go to youtube/watch?v=7L1gBhr7_dk
the second i connect it saying "Samsung Kies", this happens. What do i do?
Backup your internal SD card and format it. This helps sometimes.

I finally managed to upgrade SGS firmware through Kies because I found a solution on how to connect Kies to Samsung Galaxy S. The solution is quite long though, but the end result is worth it. I now can connect Kies to SGS successfully all the time.
I live in Indonesia, bought the phone from a gadgets store. The phone is unlocked/sim free/unbranded.
The original firmware code (dial *#1234#):
PDA: I9000DXJF4
Phone: Unknown <-- what the ??
CSC: I9000OLBJF4
And this is what I've done:
Downloading and installing Kies from Australia instead of Indonesia. The version number is higher 1.5.1.10083. The important 64-bit drivers already included. Installed smoothly on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, but had driver problem in Windows Vista Home 32-bit. I don't bother to try to reinstall Kies in Vista again though, so I don't know if this version is really not working in Vista 32-bit. UPDATE: This version is working in Vista 32-bit and Win7 64-bit!
Press/dial *#272*HhMm# (Hh and Mm is hour and minute in 24H format, 2 digits) then select the code from the list equal to "Sales Code" at the top, which is XSE (Indonesia), and press Install. Warning, this step will erase the internal SD card. Make backup first if you must.
After the installation from step two is completed, the phone will reboot itself. To make sure that everything is still working (no more downloaded Applications or Contacts though, everything was wiped out), I did reboot the phone once again. The phone works normally. But my phone type was still "Unknown" at this point.
Without changing any setting in the phone and Kies, I connect the USB to the phone, Kies fired up automatically, and voila! My phone was detected, and Kies also gave me a notification that a new firmware is available (I9000DXJG4). So, I downloaded and applied the firmware.
New firmware installed successfully. Works better and faster/smoother than DXJF4. GPS is much better now. Love it. Dial *#1234# gives me this now:
PDA: I9000DXJG4
Phone: I9000DXJG4 <-- yay!
CSC: I9000OLBJG4
In this firmware, Samsung also includes an application/widget called "Task Manager", which is pretty much like those "Task Killer" apps in the market.
And now, The Buts!
YouTube (APK) is not working. In JF4 it worked well.
Android Market now can't download every item I selected, but it can show the list normally. I did login successfully using my Google account.
Samsung Kies detected the phone but now giving me this warning "The SIM card is not inserted, can continue communication". The SIM card is inside the phone!
Samsung Kies really gives me a headache, literally. Old problems fixed, new problems arise. Anyone knows how to solve that three problems? Please?
Or, should I redo the *#272*HhMm# procedure once again after installing the new firmware?
Did some experiment and it was a success.
So, I did a Factory Reset. All caches and some data are gone, but all downloaded applications and contacts are still intact. YouTube (APK) is now working and I can access Android Market again. The big downside: My phone type is back to "Unknown"!
Next, I dialed *#272*HhMm# again, let the phone reboot and setting up itself. And voila! The phone type is back to normal again "I9000DXJG4".
YouTube app and Android Market is still working normally. I haven't try to connect the phone to Kies though.
I read somewhere in xda-developer forum that after upgrading (and downgrading maybe?) the phone firmware you need to do a Factory Reset first, so you need to backup your data before upgrading/downgrading.
I think that's the answer of my question above. And dialing *#272... completes the whole process in my case.
My impression of JG4? It's fast and responsive. It's a great piece of firmware.
KIES recognize Galaxy S without problem!
Well, the fix I've listed above work very, very well!
Kies now will recognize the phone correctly. And I can make backup of my contacts or upgrading the firmware through Kies.
I'm very happy with Samsung Galaxy S and Kies now!
awright. gotta try this trick )

were u able to use 3 button combo after that?
My fix
Whenever my SGS is no longer seen by Kies (Win7 x64):
Close Kies and the tray icon
Stop Kies mode on the phone
Disconnect phone
Connect phone
Put phone in Kies mode
Wait for Win7 to settle
Go into Windows Device Manager
Delete the phone from "Mobile Devices" (you may even see it with an "!" icon which is what put me onto this method)
Stop Kies mode on the phone
Disconnect phone
Run Kies
Connect phone
Put phone in Kies mode
Windows then re-detects the phone and after a short while so does Kies.
Hasn't failed yet.

Lucky for me, the 3 button combo problem is not an issue for my hardware. Before I finally "found" those steps above, I once used a 3 button combo step to fix KIES problem as said in this forum or other forum, I forgot.
The 3 button combo problem is related to defective hardware rather than firmware I guess.

From my experience, whenever KIES can't detect my SGS, it also means that the IMEI number in my SGS is gone and listed as Unknown. KIES needs IMEI number to be present.
The source of my IMEI problem is quite surprising: the One Click Lag Fix. Whenever OCLF is activated, IMEI number is listed as Unknown, and KIES can't find the phone, and vice versa.
However, I'm quite sure that my problem with OCLF and the missing IMEI number is not a common problem, because there were no reports about this in XDA forums.

This is driving me nuts. This has to have been happening for at least a year, if not longer. Occasionally, my phone will say there has been an update downloaded, and I click to install.
The phone will reboot, say its installing the MK2 Android System Update, then when the progress bar gets to what I would guess is around 20-25%, the Android icon turns to the little guy laying down and says "Error!"
The phone automatically reboots. There is no message displayed, and the system update download notice and option to install is no longer there. Some random amount of time later, I will get the system update downloaded message again.
I have tried the following:
Downloaded Samsung Kies to manually install update- only to find out its not supported, and I need SmartSwitch instead
Downloaded SmartSwitch - Under software update my phone isnt listed under 'Target devices for Software pre-download'
Downloaded Odin3 v3.10 - I literally have no idea how to use this
Now what? Should I explore the Odin option or is there some other options I should try first? If odin is the route I need to go, where can I download the latest update? Right now my phone is running 4.3, do I have to update incrementally, or can I just download and install the latest update?

Get rid of Kies (uninstall it). Go to sammobile.com and download the firmware of your choice (OH1 is the latest, yes you can just install this). Press on the AP button in Odin and select the tar file you downloaded. Put you're phone in Download Mode (Power Off then hold Volume Down+Power) and connect to PC. Run Odin. Done.

sammobile.com doesn't have firmware for my phone? When I typed in my model number (SPH-L720), and selected the sprint option, I am redirected to a page that says 'device model not found'
EDIT: Got it, I selected the non-sprint option from the list, and then on the base SPH-L720 page I was able to find the sprint version

Hey guys,
Have been running a 4.4 ROM for a while (900i) and I finally bit the bullet and installed Phoenix Rom (900F).
It worked fantastically (aside from the NFC). I did notice the GPS failed to hookup. This was a problem so I restored my kitkat backup. However....
The GPS now no longer works!!? I download an original Kitkat Rom for my provider (optus) off Sammobile. Flashed with it with Odin and still it fails to connect.
Googling has led me to no immediate resolutions. I flashed 4.4 stock again with Odin and did a 5.0 Lollipop update OTA in hope that it would fix things.
It hasn't worked thus far. Was hopefing someone would know what was going on or could provide me with some guidance.
Cheers.

Yep. Still no dice.
Only other thing I can think of is to grab the correct PIT file for your model S5, flash that and a stock ROM at the same time using ODIN
If it still doesn't work after that, it sounds like a hardware issue
You say your phone is the G900I? And you flashed a G900F ROM to it?
Other than that, make sure other devices can get a GPS lock, make sure it's not just the weather stopping it working

Not exactly sure where to get the correct PIT file to flash.
I'll try disabling all weather settings though, didn't think of that one. Cheers

Scroll down and choose your model S5 PIT, Extract to .pit, add to PIT section, and flash with the stock ROM in AP or PDA section as normal
And I meant the weather outside stopping the phone seeing the satellites, heavily cloudy days can cause problems sometimes, but check settings, connections, location, is set to high accuracy

Hi there , i've had the same problem when installing a custom rom like PopWiz Telstra or other rom don't no why but this fix works for me every time :
Install latest rooted TW (original Samsung Touch wiz rom) like (Alexandr ROM )
Install from play store Shortcut Master or Phone Info
Open ‘Secret Code Explorer’ menu, scroll down to 27663368378 and launch it (select ‘Launch 0’, root is required).
Then select the latest menu option Hardware sensors
Then the latest option restore (rebuild) NVRAM (or something like that. I’m writing this from my memory )
Reboot the phone
Try GPS – it should work
I have just copy paste it from a site in works like a charm on g900f
Alright. I'm unhappy with the Optus Lollipop 5.0 stock. I can't install xposed because its odexed so I'm going back to the Phoenix 900F!
This time I'm going to install it with TWRP.
Will then go through the troubleshooting attempts in an attempt to have a GREAT rom with a fully functional GPS!~
Okay, so here's my predicament:
Updating my S4 to 5.0.1 failed, so I flashed it with the proper one, but I accidentally clicked Nand Reset All, and now, this get's funny, I can't write or flash any official updates or anything, it get's to this:
Nand Reat/Write failed.
BUT HOLD THE HORSES, THERE'S MORE:
My phone says: There as a problem with the firmware, please use recovery in Kies and try again.
And it says a bunch of stuff on the top left.
If you need screenies, I am happy to provide a full video.
EDIT:
So, I got this little error now:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

}
I never tried repartitioning, but I'm going to do some more research on this error, and see if I can't find a solution

For Re-Partition you require a PIT file. The PIT file has to be specific to the internal storage of your phone.
So the first flash (the one with nand erase all) was successful and any subsequent flash failed?

Really? Damn, well, I guess I could grab it, but I now don't see the firmware issue and now see the S4 Bottscreen, but now I can't boot anymore, I'm thinking of reinstalling adb toget rid of this pesky libsub error.
I'll update soon.
I don't know wht I did, but it works, and it's updating now to the newest firmware. I'll update when I wake up on how I fixed it.
This is what I used to restore it to it's normal capacities:
Guys, Kies 3 has a way of re-flashing your device to the latest official firmware for a certain model with a certain Samsung serial number, i.e. even if your device is bricked and Kies 3 cannot detect it, you enter it's model and Samsung serial number and Kies 3 will download and flash the firmware for you, all you need to do is open Kies 3, power up your device and connect it to your PC, you will then open Tools menu and select Firmware Upgrade and Initialization, if Kies 3 can detect your phone it will show you the version of the firmware that will be downloaded and flashed then you will proceed as instructed (very simple procedures), if not you will be asked to enter just your model (for example GT-N8000) and your Samsung Serial Number (usually starts with R can be found on the sticker under the battery) then it will show you the latest official firmware for your device and if you proceed it will download and flash it for you, but be careful (this will be noted by Kies 3 too) you should get a full backup of your phone as it may wipe out everything on the internal storage in the process if it's required (i.e. a bricked phone to the extent of wrong partitioning that lead to loss of imei), needless to say this process depends on your internet connection (it downloads prerequisite files and firmware files which are relatively large), from little experience I have, it's best that you use the conventional official method for any product rather than unconventional ways at the beginning to solve any problem related to any product, if it doesn't help then try your best with any other method that might help you (by the way I tried this with more than one model of Samsung smart phones, tablets and notes and it always ends up solving the problem, in some cases with my friends devices reviving the device again after being totally bricked), hope this helps .
Note: all devices I used this method with were original devices straight from Samsung (International Versions, Unbranded & Unlocked), so the firmware comes straight from Samsung (no modifications done by operators / carriers) so I'm not sure if it will work for other devices (Fake Cloned, Locked or Branded devices with carriers specific settings)

Cant post yet.
It's good to know this.
Unfortunately there are a lot of Frankenstein S4s out there. What this means is that the phone has been repaired with mismatched parts from other S4 models, and this may lead to apps reporting a wrong phone model and other errors.

Yeah, but mine's bought from my phone company and never broke internally, no hardware damage or anything like that, but it now bricked itself again, so I ran into another problem, it doen't show up in emergency recovery in Kies, I don't see the phone. Hmm, 'll keep trying and update the thread when I've figured this out.

Why are you trying to flash a 4.4.2 rom? You said you were on 5.0.1 (or at least your tried to flash that) so you probably can't flash a 4.4.2. rom.
Download a Lollipop rom and try flashing it again.

For some reason I was about to update my H870DS TWN, and the download stopped midway and now says I'm on latest version (Nougat), doesn't find Oreo anymore. Does anybody know if the oreo update was halted for some reason, maybe they found it has issues or users reported problems?
My Singapore H870DS told me about the update on Friday, I went to download it today and suddenly its gone

Thanks for reporting, sure LG found major issues with the Oreo update for the G6 and halted it.

If you have bugs you may need to downgrade, so maybe it's better to stay on 7.0. Maybe I'm lucky I didn't upgrade.

FANTASTIC idea. Let's spam them like morons so they have to dedicate time to cleaning up the spam rather than distributing the update. Let's go a step further and call their support hotlines and scream at the underpaid students working there.

You are right.
After this nasty experience, I won't buy LG phones again.
We just need to wait
I've send an email, in english, to LG support in Taiwan, regarding android 8.0 update for the LG G6 H870DS. Let's see if they answer it.
I am using Oreo on Indian device no issue

Thank you very much! Finally could update it, here's how to do it:
HOW TO UPDATE LG G6 H870DS TWN FROM ANDROID 7 TO ANDROID 8.0 OREO
1) Download the KDZ file:
https://lg-firmwares.com/downloads-file/15229/H870DS20a_00_OPEN_TW_DS_OP_0518.kdz
2) Download LGUP software for Windows:
Download LGUP_Install_Ver_1_14_3.msi file.
3) Download and extract LGUP_common.zip
Extract the two files inside, specially LGUP_common.dll to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common (create it if doesn't exist).
4) Power off the LG G6.
5) Then press UP volume, and while keeping it pressed connect the G6 to the computer over USB. The LG G6 should enter in Download (Flash) mode and display "Firmware Update" with an USB logo inside two arrows, plus display the COM port (in my case COM 8).
If the device is not recognize properly you may need to install LG drivers as well, they are available on previous links.
6) Open LGUP and choose UPGRADE and select the KDZ file on the 3 dots. Then hit start and don't disconnect the phone and make sure your computer does not shutdown.

}
7) Now the phone will restart and start the upgrade process of all the apps. Everything you had on your phone will be kept, installed apps, pictures, desktop configuration with folders and shortcuts, and almost all apps. Maybe some app may need re-authenticating (like FolderSync) or some widget to be re-configured (like Google Keep or calendar widgets) but for the rest of it it will be kept exactly the same, you will only notice that you have upgraded because of the newer rounded icons and the newer notification style.

For the few hours which I've been testing it so great so good.
I've lost patience now, too and flashed TWN FW manually (the clean way with factory reset before and after oreo upgrade) with the guide above.
First bug found so far: 5Ghz WLAN appeared in the initial setup but soon after didn't get discovered anymore. Now I hope that resetting the network settings will fix the issue.
Apart from that, the first impression is flawless and smooth. I've been used to oreo on my Xperia XZ (for months already!), though.

I did not perform a factory reset, but same issue here. 5GHz networks don't appear after the Oreo update. I guess the update was withdrawn for a reason, and now I can see a glimpse of it. Wish I never had updated, I can't see anymore 5GHz networks.
I can't demand an update from LG because I'm outside asia so no warranty, but please if anyone is, demand them to upgrade to Oreo 8.1 please.

Good news: Network Settings Reset didn't do the trick but I've found a fix (long-term functionality not yet approved):
1) Go to phone and dial *#546368#*870# to enter the hidden menu
2) Go to field test > wifi test > OTA
In my case it was disabled and enabling solved the problem! (actually I don't even have a clue what this setting is exactly for, found out through trial and error)
3) Then went one step back, entered FTM test, set 5GHz, started and boom, "start successful"! (before it had failed) :good:
4) Finally I went back to regular WiFi-Menu, was switched off so had to turn it back on, no networks, off an on again, 5Ghz was back and still is after several reboots + resetting network settings once again to double check.
Hope that works for others as well! :fingers-crossed:
