Rooted my Vibrant - Vibrant General

Ok so I rooted my phone a couple days ago. Nothing more, just a root.
Question is, will I still be able to get Froyo when Samsung finally releases it or did rooting mess that up?

No one knows cause, frankly, no one has tested it out yet.
Best bet would be to unroot and update just to avoid problems.

^ no.
^^ you will still get the OTA. If you accept it, you will lose root. Just wait for those on here to get the official with root and you can update manually.

FOTA Update: 1.47.651.1 (30.15 MB)

Just got my EVO and I was prompted for this update. I've been searching and have been reading mixed reviews. Some say their phones are running smoother, Wi-fi has been improved, and aesthetics have gotten a boost. Others say it bricked their phones, killed their 4G, or made their phones slower.
Has anyone installed the 30.15 MB update? Bad results? Good?
Edit: Sorry for posting this here. Thought I was in the Q&A section. Could I have this moved please? Thanks.
If you plan on rooting, root first.
rooting issues have been solved so it doesn't matter
If you're not rooting just install the update. That update makes the phone better. It worked great on mine. I was still able to root as well.
the first OTA with the same number was pulled when it was bricking phones. then another version was put out that fixed the problem and also "fixed rooting" as well lol. i think the new version was released june 28th.
but yeah the rooting has been worked around so update away. either way if anything does happen with an ota its covered.
i applied the ota as soon as i stepped out of best buy not knowing what the ota did so i lost the root option till there was a new root procedure.
If he wants to root he can just update and then root with Simple Root.

2.2 update from rooted 2.1?

I recently aquired the Vibrant and all I have to say is OMG this is a fnatastic phone. it blows my cliq, cliq xt, and g1 out of the water.
Anywho, the one question I have now that my phone is rooted and has the clockworkmod recovery is when the 2.2 update releases around september-ish, will this effect the phone being able to update like it did for the cliq, or will i be able to flash 2.2 from root and just lose root. i would be ok with it at that point because 2.2 takes care of all the issues that i have with 2.1 update1. the only reason i know this is because i have 2.2 on the g1 and its amazing. any thlughts on the matter?
once rooted on this phone, you have to wait for one of the devs to dump a 2.2 flashable rom to get the update. This is why I am gladly waiting to get the ota before considering rooting. I love the phone as it is.

yeah but I heard that if you just root only, you will be able to get the OTA update as you are still using the stock ROM. But if you are using a modified dev ROM, then yeah it will not auto update.
Can anyone confirm this?

Yes this is the case, if all you do is root the phone, you will still get Tmobile updates. You might lose root, but as was pointed out in a similar thread, Samsung doesn't seem to care about locking things up, so you should be able to root again easily.
ok so its more in line with what the g1 used to do if you didnt go onto a modified rom. with the cliq, even if you root and are on the stock rom, you still cant load the ota update because it fails when you try to load it once downloaded. i dont mind losing root once 2.2 comes out, i just want to make sure i can get it. i was thinking of going back to stock without root, but i'm having some trouble getting the phone in download mode

Thanks for the input. Has this been the case for any other phone? Where rooting only will still get you OTA updates, or is this a theory?
Thanks~

Froyo 2.2 OTA = Lose Root?

I stumbled across a page a few days ago, and someone said that if you take the 2.2 update through Sprint, you'll lose your root (I know this part) but he also said you won't be able to root in the future.
Is this true? If so then I'd definitely prefer jumping on a 2.2 ROM and using that instead of receiving the update via Sprint.
I would like to use the Cyro ROM or whatever, but I don't like the idea of not having my FM radio or 4G etc etc.
Just use Fresh 3.0 (based on 2.2) then you can keep all the HTC/Sprint stuff you want.
Any official updates - past, present, and future - will break root. If you are rooted and don't want to lose root, be patient and wait a couple days for the dudes here to put out a rooted ROM without having to wait for a root exploit. When updating to an official ROM there is a likelihood that there will be no root exploit to discover and thus you will be S.O.L. when it comes to regaining root. Patience.
There are currently several 2.2 ROMs based off of the official leak (but it's supposedly not the final build). Look for the rooted ones by netarchy or whoever.
just give it a few more days. the official v2.2 should go out tomorrow. just don't accept the OTA update.
if you are planning on rooting your phone then do not accept any Over The Air updates (yes OTA can jak ur root). the official comes out on 8/3 so give it till the weekend and you should have updated ROMs using the latest greatest. anyone updating to the leaked version 'should' be ok but will prolly be updating again once their ROM gets the official updates. save yourself the stress and wait til the dust settles...unless ur big into the geeking on your EVO...then just make sure your nandroids are good.
Cyanogen will be nice. however, due to that teams philosophy on using opensource code you may not see 4G as fast as you will with some of our other devs (godspeed to madcoders fingers). I'm probably going to load the Fresh 3.0 ROM later this week...once the dust has settled. i miss my 4G.
If you want to keep root, DO NOT download anything from sprint, only download from XDA and the like.

OTA has been known to cause:
Anal Seepage.
Watch.
Right after someone takes it, they are gonna come here wanting root...
If you do OTA, either wait for Root, or SHUT UP!
Don't whine, don't b!tch, and don't say you didn't know!
I am not in hurry to upgrade to 2.2, I don't mind waiting. I've had my phone two weeks and I've barely rooted it and it's still not even setup the way I want it yet because I know I'll be flashing soon anyways.
Looks like Fresh 3.0 will be the way to go, I'll just wait until a bit after the 3rd so I have the final build.
I downloaded the update just so I could have the file I don't want to actually install it. Anyone know where the file is downloaded too so I can pull it off my phone?

[Q] If I root my vibrant, will I still get OTAs?

Hey, guys (and gals):
I posted this in the thread about the z4Root application, but didn't get an answer. It's kind of a general question anyway.
I'm totally interested in Rooting my Vibrant (using z4Root or some other one-click application based method), installing lag fix, and wifi tethering. That's it. I'm just worried that when 2.2 is pushed out to us, I won't be able to get the OTA. Does anyone know if the system is left intact enough by these methods to allow me to receive an OTA? Otherwise I might just suffer with what I have and wait a while. Also, anyone know if I can easily unroot using these methods if that is what is needed to receive an official OTA?
I'm not a total noob to rooting. I had an original MT3G, and rooted that one, flashed roms, etc, and even restored to stock before selling on eBay.
Thanks.
I'm pretty sure if you are rooted with stock rom you will receive OTA updates. If you flash a rom though you will not receive updates.
And yes, you can one click unroot with Z4Root if need be.
Pretty sure is good, but I was hoping for something definite. I don't plan on flashing ROMs, just rooting, applying lag fix, and then maybe wifi tethering/minor overclocking.
This is directly from the sticky post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458
IF I ROOT, WILL I GET OTA UPDATES?
Yes. Rooting will not prevent this, unless you flash a custom ROM that will block receiving the OTA update. Typically, accepting an OTA will make you lose root. Some upgrading to JI6 state they didn't lose root, I did (using ODIN), but gaining root back is so easy.
So basically yep you'll get OTA's and then you can root again.
Awesome. It seems like there's always a sticky or previous post that answers my question. I appreciate your patience in not just douche-ily linking to it and telling me to search better. I'm thinking I'm going to root today.
Any idea on which lag fix is the easiest/best, if you've already done it?

Stick with RyanZA's one click lag fix from the market. It's pretty hard to mess up your phone with his fix.
Thanks. I plan to use his root and lagfix, then.
But you must get rid of the lag fix prior to update.. root is fine but not the lag fix though afaik..
go here and do this

Even if you don't get OTA (which you should), you can always use Kies/Kies Mini to update. I use Kies/Kies Mini anyway because I hate waiting until the OTA is pushed to my particular handset.

This is true... Ryanz lag fix is an EXT2 type and the OTA's seem to look for the stock rfs system. So undo the lag fix, but you don't have to unroot.
RyanZa's OCLF is the way to go as already mentioned.
Yeah, I try not to be "douchey", it's not so fresh when you do that... lol!

[Q] Should I root and install a custom ROM or wait for 2.2?

I'm tempted to root my phone, and install a ROM, BUT is it really worth it? Should I have more patience and wait for 2.2 ROMS? Im worried if I root it now, then 2.2 comes out Ill have to restore it back to stock. I also heard if you have a rooted phone and a major update (like froyo) comes out your pretty much bricked. Advice needed?

Wrong section.
Root it. You can always unroot your phone and go back to stock. Ive done it plenty of time. Read through the forums....there are plenty of instructions on how to

Agreed on rooting. The stock phone software is really crappy. I'm not sure how you live with it?

You can always flash back to stock if you don't like what you did to it. I end up flashing to stock, then flashing to a rom every other week or so to clean any messes with my phone. You'll learn how to do it right and how to fix. But start by reading the stickies, and asking the guys on irc if you have questions.
I'ld be more concerned that if you get the OTA before you root, that the update will close the exploit and make it impossible to root afterwards. If you root now, you may have to wait a day or two longer for Froyo. But if you plan to root after (or if you unroot for an OTA), you may have to wait a lot longer for a new root method.
Root and ROM. no question about it. We haven't even heard a release date or even a time frame for when the Fascinate will get it. I know everyone bashes me for this but the bottom line is no one has ever came out and said that the fascinate will get it on this date. Maybe the galaxy S is. But not the VERIZON FASCINATE
